        Tablettes de Soirées.

Paris, Chez l'Editeur, Rue de Sorbonne, nd. 2 1/2 x 3 5/8. 31 leaves, with 13 vignettes. A printed notebook in which to record daily Perte, Gain, Recette, & Dépense followed by a section for "Souvenir." Bound in boards lacquered with a black ground painted in gold, red, & green. On the upper cover a Japanese fisherman hauls in his catch; on the lower, he leaves with fish basket slung over his shoulder. Each cover displays a different building and different floral border. Velvet spine (worn) , red silk endpapers and loops to hold the pencil (present here), ribbon place marker. Very tiny label of Clarice W. Hamill on pastedown. With the rare Brevet d'Invention (patent) label on pastedown. Some crackling under the varnish & a tiny chip from lower cover, but a very good copy. "In 1811, Théodore Pierre Bertin obtained a five year patent for lacquered bindings ('reliures vernissées'). His workshop produced most of the c30 known examples, the last of which has a 1818 printed text." (British Library database of bindings) In this expensive and delicate technique, the binding was repeatedly--dozens of times-- varnished & rubbed down to achieve a lustrous finish. These rare bindings are frequently, and erroneously, termed "Vernis Martin" after the four Martin brothers who invented a lacquer finish for furniture. Albert Ehrman published a census (The Book Collector, Winter 1965) of "Vernis Martin" bindings in the libraries of Abbey, Broxburne, Esmerian, Morgan, Walters Art Gallery, Wittock, et al. There is nothing similar to this binding in his census. A two-volume work in Vernis bindings (Erhman's no. 4, described as "of the greatest rarity") but with no patent label brought $45,000 in the Cornelius Hauck sale.

Uncle Tom's Cabin Or, Negro Life in the Slave Staves of America. Embellished with Eight Engranings.

13,5 cm x 20 cm. Frontispiece, VI, 351 pages. Original Hardcover / Original full leather with gilt ornaments on spine and boards. Spine label faded, otherwise in good condition with some stronger signs of external wear. Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (June 14, 1811 July 1, 1896) was an American abolitionist and author. She came from the Beecher family, a famous religious family, and is best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). It depicts the harsh life for African Americans under slavery. It reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and Great Britain. It energized anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. She wrote 30 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters. She was influential for both her writings and her public stands on social issues of the day. Harriet Elisabeth Beecher was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, on June 14, 1811. She was the seventh of 13 children born to outspoken Calvinist preacher Lyman Beecher and Roxana (Foote), a deeply religious woman who died when Stowe was only five years old. Roxana's maternal grandfather was General Andrew Ward of the Revolutionary War. Her notable siblings included a sister, Catharine Beecher, who became an educator and author, as well as brothers who became ministers: including Henry Ward Beecher, who became a famous preacher and abolitionist, Charles Beecher, and Edward Beecher. Harriet enrolled in the Hartford Female Seminary run by her older sister Catharine, where she received a traditional academic education usually reserved for males at the time with a focus in the classics, including studies of languages and mathematics. Among her classmates was Sarah P. Willis, who later wrote under the pseudonym Fanny Fern. In 1832, at the age of 21, Harriet Beecher moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to join her father, who had become the president of Lane Theological Seminary. There, she also joined the Semi-Colon Club, a literary salon and social club whose members included the Beecher sisters, Caroline Lee Hentz, Salmon P. Chase (future governor of the state and Secretary of Treasury under President Lincoln), Emily Blackwell and others. Cincinnati's trade and shipping business on the Ohio River was booming, drawing numerous migrants from different parts of the country, including many free blacks, as well as Irish immigrants who worked on the state's canals and railroads. Areas of the city had been wrecked in the Cincinnati riots of 1829, when ethnic Irish attacked blacks, trying to push competitors out of the city. Beecher met a number of African Americans who had suffered in those attacks, and their experience contributed to her later writing about slavery. Riots took place again in 1836 and 1841, driven also by native-born anti-abolitionists. It was in the literary club that she met Calvin Ellis Stowe, a widower who was a professor at the seminary. The two married on January 6, 1836. He was an ardent critic of slavery, and the Stowes supported the Underground Railroad, temporarily housing several fugitive slaves in their home. Most slaves continued north to secure freedom in Canada. The Stowes had seven children together, including twin daughters. (Wikipedia)

Beschriftung: unten rechts signiert, datiert und bezeichnet: "JAKlein del: 1811 Nürnberg", verso bezeichnet: "Der Vetter Schauer aus Nbg", Sammlungsstempel Henirich Lempertz, Köln (Lugt Nr. 1337). Provenienz: Sammlung Heinrich Lempertz, Köln. Grösse: 15,5 x 10,2 cm (Darstellung). Zustand: Insgesamt guter Zustand, minimal fleckig. Nr. G 648 [A.I. 774]; „Der Freund Georg Christoph Wilder", 1810, Bleistift auf Papier, 11,5 x 12,5 cm, Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig, Inv. Nr. NJ 805). Zustand: Insgesamt guter Zustand, minimal fleckig.         An Accurate System of Surveying; in which is contained, I. Decimal Fractions, in a plain, concise, and easy Manner. II. The Extraction of the Square-Root. III. Plane Trigonometry, rectangular and oblique. IV. An exact Method to cast up the Contents of Lands. V. Field Surveying. The Whole being performed without the Use of Scale and Compasses, or a Table of Logarithms. In which is given, some Account of the Variation of the Needle, and the Causes of its Attraction.

x, [6], 131 [i.e., 132], [4] pp. 4to. The first American work to be published on surveying, providing an account of the mathematical principles associated with various tasks important to the surveyor. Moore was an experienced surveyor by the time he published this work, and part of the aim of this work is to provide methods superior to those in common use at the time, which Moore believed to be crude. He states in his preface that "[the] original surveys of this Country, so far as my Knowledge (from Acquaintance and Information) extends, are very confused and incorrect... the Cheapness of Lands superseding the Necessity of Precision... This, joined to the Consideration of the large Tracts of appropriated Lands belonging to the United States, renders the Art I am treating of, at this Time peculiarly important." The Treaty of Paris was less than 15 years in the past at the time of publication, and during these years a great deal of land changed ownership. Little did Moore know that less than ten years later the size of the nation would double due to the Louisiana Purchase, making this work even more timely than he had originally surmised.KEYWORDS: MATHEMATICS MATH LAND SURVEY First edition. Collated and complete, with page 64 repeated as called for (Evans 30810). This copy belonged to Cyrus Avery (his name and date [Jany 2nd 1811] on first preface page), a surveyor himself. Avery's grandson, also named Cyrus, was the highway commissioner responsible for the construction of the famous Route 66. Boards rubbed, endpapers moderately foxed, lightly foxed throughout. Litchfield: T. Collier, 1796. First Edition. Collectible; Good/No Jacket.

4to. Finely and handsomely bound in half tan Regency calf over marbled boards, the spine with 5 raised bands exquisitely and extravagantly decorated in gilt in compartments with a repeating scroll-tool design, lettered direct in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, housed within a custom-made beige cloth-covered fall-down-back box with green cloth label lettered in gilt; pp. [58]; with fine stipple-engraved, and hand-coloured, allegorical frontispiece of the Muse of Drawing by Louis Portman after Jacques Kuyper, together with 20 other fine, and exquisite, engraved plates with detailed and expert hand-colouring throughout; a wonderfully pleasing copy; externally fine; recently expertly, and invisibly, rejointed at upper board by Charles Gledhill, internally also preserved in exceptionally crisp state with occasional very light, and inoffensive, browning and spotting (almost exclusively confined to text pages) and some of the unavoidable offsetting from plates to blank guards, with a neat contemporary inscription, dated 1817, to front blank. Early, revised, edition, complete with an additional 4 plates, with extensive explanatory text in both Dutch and French. This work originally appeared in 5 instalments from 1803 to 1807, with a total of 16 plates. All images carry the imprint of Evert Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co., apart from plate 1, which only mentions the Dutch printer. It is a historically, ethnologically, and culturally, important volume of prints of costumes of the various Batavian provinces, designed to underline their antique origin, and their "absolute Dutchness". The venture was also, in part, a propaganda exercise, designed to reinforce Dutch national identity following a period of political unrest. Similar works had appeared in France, England, Germany and Switzerland in response to the growing intellectual interest in the study of popular culture. This also stimulated artistic, and commercial, competition between nations. The beautiful and animated backgrounds which were drawn from nature, the beautifully observed and documented details of costume (which were drawn from life), and the extensive anecdotal text, provide a social, cultural, and historical context for the dress (Eveline Koolhaas-Grosfeld.

Frankfurt am Main, J. Ch. C. Diez, 1806-1809. 3 parts in 3 volumes. 8vo. With 5 figures on 2 engraved plates. In contemporary wrappers, parts 1-2 of uniform green paper, part 3 of brown paste paper.

      - Jenaische Allg. Literatur-Zeit. VIII.II (no. 110, 15 May 1811); KVK (5, 3 & 1 copies); WorldCat (4, 1 & 1 copies). First and only edition, including the two rare supplements, of a work on quadrature that the author calls a "new very simple theory for squaring curved surfaces based on the summation of infinite series," intended to make differential and integral calculus unnecessary. His goal is to demonstrate the usefulness of sums of infinite series in place of differential and integral calculus. The 1811 review found little new in Fresenius's "theory" and noted its similarity to the methods of John Wallis's 1656 Arithmeticam Infinitorum. Little is known about the author, who signed only the dedications, but parts 1 and 2 are dedicated to teachers, suggesting he was still young. Fresenius is therefore probably the identically named author of a half dozen works on religion, history and education published in Frankfurt in the years 1836 to 1853, including Zur Geschichte der Erfindung des Buchdrucks. In very good condition, with part 3 slightly browned and its edges tattered. An immature mathematical work by a curious author, with the rare supplements containing clues to his early life.

This great agricultural show was started by Frances Russell (1763-1802) who established a model farm at Woburn with 'every convenience that could be desired for the breeding of cattle and experiments in farming'. This included valuable experiments upon the respective merits of the various breeds of sheep. The sheep shearing exhibitions lasted for days and the whole English agricultural world was invited to this splendid event and the week concluded with banquets for the Duke's numerous guests staying at Woburn Abbey. The scene shows an enormous crowd of noblemen, gentlemen, farmers, and agricultural labourers inspecting the numerous sheep and cattle whilst a sheep shearing contest is taking place in a pen on the right. This contest is being judged by an eminent circle including (as noted in the key): Arthur Young, Secretary to the Board of Agriculture, Sir John Sinclair, President of the Board of Agriculture, Sir Joseph Banks, Thomas Coke M.P., and others including Sir Humphry Davy.Sir Joseph Banks wearing a sash is shown in the middle of the judging panel in the lower left of the image, seated and holding a cane. The caption describes this scene "... two men shearing for a Prize in the foreground in the presence of the leading Members of the Board of Agriculture". Sir Joseph was the key figure in breeding merino sheep and in the introduction of this species into Australia. Not only was he the leading advocate for the establishment of the merino breed of sheep in England, he was in charge of the Royal flock of 500 sheep given to King George 111 by the Spanish Court. It is recorded that he sold off his own sheep on the Oaklands Estate, Lincolnshire to devote himself to the care and breeding of the merino and declared "merino sheep will in time be procured with carcasses perfectly fashionable and wool as perfectly fine..."The Australian sheep industry began when John Macarthur imported three rams and five ewes in 1797 on the advice of Sir Joseph. The artist of this fine image was George Garrard ARA (1760-1826), a pupil of the Cumbrian sporting artist Sawrey Gilpin. He specialised in depicting the improved breeds of farm animals of the Agricultural Revolution and was instrumental in the passing of a bill to secure copyright on sculptured and cast works of art. The caption states that this fine and large image is " stipple and outline etched by M.N. Bate, figures and landscape by J.C. Stadler, the whole touched and arranged by the original painter" In very good condition overall.

Dramatic Works of Ben Jonson, and Beaumont and Fletcher.

London: Stockdale, 1811. Four volumes, small quarto, with an engraved frontispiece of each playwright by Audinet;, full diced Russia, gilt spines with raised bands. Beautifully bound set of the works of master playwright Ben Johnson, for many years the equal to Shakespeare on the English stage. This set also prints the works of Jonson's luminous contemporaries Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher.Jonson's career was extraordinary even by the standards of his time. Born into humble circumstances he was a brilliant student but worked as a bricklayer before establishing a role in the theatre (John Aubrey depicts him reciting Homer with a trowel in hand). Jonson also served as a soldier in the British force sent to expel the Spanish from Holland in 1591, and narrowly escaped the gallows for murdering a fellow actor in a duel. Never a brilliant actor, Jonson was manifestly a poet and playwright who regularly upset the status quo; he suffered incarceration in the Tower under Queen Elizabeth although later enjoyed the patronage of her successor James I. An appealing set in an unusual binding.
