        Nangaku Bumpo^ TEKURABE GAFU

1811. Good. [EHON] Kawamura BUMPO & Watanabe NANGAKU. Nangaku Bumpo TEKURABE GAFU. Naniwa [Osaka]: Kawachiya Kihei & Teito [Kyoto]: Fukui Genjiro, Bunka 8 [1811]. 26.0 x 17.8 cm. Yellow covers, string-bound, fukuro-toji, printed paper title label. See Mitchell 324-5 for more on this bibliographically complex book. Resembles his "B" example in one volume with alternative title of the KAIDO KYOKA AWASE, with which it is pictorially identical, save that this variant issue is printed with the key blocks only, black and white. Hard to establish a chronology of the various issues as they all have the same colophon, but one would think this to be a later issue. There is a subsidiary colophon glued to the inner back cover, listing not only Fukui Genjiro of Kyoto but also Fukui Konosuke and the Fukui publishing house in Doshin, Ise. Fair to good impressions. A wonderful collaboration from these two great artists, alternating their designs in succession. Quite an unusual book. The b+w prnting and change of printer/publishers points up the enormous complexity of Japanese bibliography. Overall good original condition.

British Ornithology: Being the History with a coloured representation of every known Species of British Birds. Assisted by several eminent ornithologists.

London: Printed for the Author by Stephen Couchman, 1811–13 - 2 volumes in 1, octavo (230 x 146 mm). Near-contemporary tan calf, titles to green sheep label to spine, fully gilt in compartments, single gilt rule to covers, double gilt rule to turn-ins. A little rubbing to extremities, slight bumps to tips, head of front board lightly faded, couple of small scratches to boards, colour slightly smudged to 3 plates, small tear to plate 17, colour to plates extremely clear and bright; an excellent copy. Frontispiece and 95 engraved plates handcoloured by Graves. First edition of the first two volumes of Graves's Birds, the third volume of which was published first in 1821 by W. & S. Graves as part of the second edition. The plates for this book were originally intended to be used by William Curtis, the renowned botanist and entomologist, the fourth and fifth volumes of whose Flora Londinensis Graves edited. Unfortunately Curtis died in 1799 before this work could come to fruition, presumably prompting Graves to publish this work himself. This copy with hand numbered pages and a hand written index bound in at rear dated "4/7/49", with occasional helpful marginalia directing the reader to relevant plates. A richly illustrated and beautifully coloured book. Mullens and Swann, pp. 245-247. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Art of Preserving All Kinds of Animal and Vegetable Substances for Several Years. A Work Published by Order of the French Minister of the Interior. Translated from the French

London for Black, Parry, and Kingsbury, booksellers to the Hon. East-India Company 1811 - Duodecimo (176 × 103 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, double line rules to boards gilt, blue speckled edges. Folding plate. Contemporary armorial bookplate of William Middleton Esq. Some wear to extremities, only minor toning and offsetting to contents. An excellent, unsophisticated copy. First English language edition of the first book on canning as a food preservation technique. Louis Appert (1749-1841) "learned the art of cooking from his father, who was an hotelier. He worked at first in the service of the Duke of Deux-Ponts and was officier de bouche to the Princess of Forbach. In 1780 he established himself in business as a confectioner in the Rue des Lombards in Paris. The Directory government offered a prize of 12,000 francs for the discovery of a process to preserve the food destined for the army. Appert perfected a sterilization method which was named after him - appertisation. In 1804 he built a factory at Massy (on land where peas and beans had been cultivated) and started up the production of bottled preserved foods. In 1810 the government officially recognized his discovery and awarded him the prize. In the same year, Appert published L'Art de conserver pendant, which generously made his process available to all. Moreover, his work was republished in 1811 and 1813 under the title Livre de tous les menages. The fall of the Empire ruined him but in 1822, by which time others had become rich on his discovery, the state recognized his achievement in conceiving the process by granting him a small income. In the premises which were then allowed him, he pursued his experiments on the clarification of wines, the purification of bone gelatin, preservation in cans, etc, but he subsequently died in poverty" (The Concise Larousse Gastronomique, p. 34).

- 8vo. (2), 214 pp. Modern marbled boards with printed spine label. Edges sprinkled. First edition. - A scholarly account, and partial German translation, of Ali Vasi Celebi's "Humayunnama" - a Turkish translation of the Persian "Anvar-i suhayli" (Light of Canopus), completed before 1543, which is in itself an adaptation of "Kalila wa Dimna", or the "Fables of Bidpai", a collection of animal fables with didactic overtones designed to illustrate wise conduct. - The oriental scholar H. F. Diez (1751-1817) had trained as a jurist but, bored by his administrative occupation, soon left the Prussian civil service and in 1784 went to Constantinople as Frederick the Great's chargé d'affaires at the Sublime Porte. He was ennobled after only two years of successful diplomatic service. Recalled in 1790 on the eve of the Russo-Turkish War, the self-confessed Turkophile soon retired to a life of an independent scholar and book collector in Berlin. His orientalist publications captured the attention of the learned world, and he moved in the circles of Goethe, Gleim, and Alexander von Humboldt, though largely outside the contemporary tradition of academic oriental studies. "Between his years in Constantinople and his death, Diez pursued his Orientalist studies with extraordinary energy. A string of books authored by Diez and mostly self-published appeared in 1811 [.] Even if many aspects of his scholarly life are almost forgotten, his merits, especially for the development of Turkish studies, are noteworthy [.] His works, almost completely printed at his own expense, reflect his interest in the origins of Asian cultures, literatures, and politics, as well as everyday issues and ethics" (J. Gonnella et al. [ed.], The Diez Albums [Leiden, 2017], p. 58, 76). - A fine copy, well-preserved throughout. Chauvin II, p. 49, no. 70. Ruppert 756. Goedeke VII, 589, 61, 1. A printed notebook in which to record daily Perte, Gain, Recette, & Dépense followed by a section for "Souvenir." Bound in boards lacquered with a black ground painted in gold, red, & green. On the upper cover a Japanese fisherman hauls in his catch; on the lower, he leaves with fish basket slung over his shoulder. Each cover displays a different building and different floral border. Velvet spine (worn) , red silk endpapers and loops to hold the pencil (present here), ribbon place marker. Very tiny label of Clarice W. Hamill on pastedown. With the rare Brevet d'Invention (patent) label on pastedown. Some crackling under the varnish & a tiny chip from lower cover, but a very good copy. "In 1811, Théodore Pierre Bertin obtained a five year patent for lacquered bindings ('reliures vernissées'). His workshop produced most of the c30 known examples, the last of which has a 1818 printed text." (British Library database of bindings) In this expensive and delicate technique, the binding was repeatedly--dozens of times-- varnished & rubbed down to achieve a lustrous finish. These rare bindings are frequently, and erroneously, termed "Vernis Martin" after the four Martin brothers who invented a lacquer finish for furniture. Albert Ehrman published a census (The Book Collector, Winter 1965) of "Vernis Martin" bindings in the libraries of Abbey, Broxburne, Esmerian, Morgan, Walters Art Gallery, Wittock, et al. There is nothing similar to this binding in his census. A two-volume work in Vernis bindings (Erhman's no. 4, described as "of the greatest rarity") but with no patent label brought $45,000 in the Cornelius Hauck sale.

Uncle Tom's Cabin Or, Negro Life in the Slave Staves of America. Embellished with Eight Engranings.

13,5 cm x 20 cm. Frontispiece, VI, 351 pages. Original Hardcover / Original full leather with gilt ornaments on spine and boards. Spine label faded, otherwise in good condition with some stronger signs of external wear. Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (June 14, 1811 July 1, 1896) was an American abolitionist and author. She came from the Beecher family, a famous religious family, and is best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). It depicts the harsh life for African Americans under slavery. It reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and Great Britain. It energized anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. She wrote 30 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters. She was influential for both her writings and her public stands on social issues of the day. Harriet Elisabeth Beecher was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, on June 14, 1811. She was the seventh of 13 children born to outspoken Calvinist preacher Lyman Beecher and Roxana (Foote), a deeply religious woman who died when Stowe was only five years old. Roxana's maternal grandfather was General Andrew Ward of the Revolutionary War. Her notable siblings included a sister, Catharine Beecher, who became an educator and author, as well as brothers who became ministers: including Henry Ward Beecher, who became a famous preacher and abolitionist, Charles Beecher, and Edward Beecher. Harriet enrolled in the Hartford Female Seminary run by her older sister Catharine, where she received a traditional academic education usually reserved for males at the time with a focus in the classics, including studies of languages and mathematics. Among her classmates was Sarah P. Willis, who later wrote under the pseudonym Fanny Fern. In 1832, at the age of 21, Harriet Beecher moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to join her father, who had become the president of Lane Theological Seminary. There, she also joined the Semi-Colon Club, a literary salon and social club whose members included the Beecher sisters, Caroline Lee Hentz, Salmon P. Chase (future governor of the state and Secretary of Treasury under President Lincoln), Emily Blackwell and others. Cincinnati's trade and shipping business on the Ohio River was booming, drawing numerous migrants from different parts of the country, including many free blacks, as well as Irish immigrants who worked on the state's canals and railroads. Areas of the city had been wrecked in the Cincinnati riots of 1829, when ethnic Irish attacked blacks, trying to push competitors out of the city. Beecher met a number of African Americans who had suffered in those attacks, and their experience contributed to her later writing about slavery. Riots took place again in 1836 and 1841, driven also by native-born anti-abolitionists. It was in the literary club that she met Calvin Ellis Stowe, a widower who was a professor at the seminary. The two married on January 6, 1836. He was an ardent critic of slavery, and the Stowes supported the Underground Railroad, temporarily housing several fugitive slaves in their home. Most slaves continued north to secure freedom in Canada. The Stowes had seven children together, including twin daughters. (Wikipedia)

Recherches, expériences et observations physiologiques sur l'homme dans l'état de somnambulisme naturel et dans le somnambulisme provoqué par l'acte magnétique.

Paris, Dentu, 1811, in 8°, de 5ff. XII-430pp. 1f. d'errata, cart. papier marbré bleu moderne genre ancien, bon exemplaire à toutes marges. ¶ Caillet n°2276 - Crabtree n° 237 "A significant study of natural and magnetic somnambulism by the discoverer of the latter." - Wellcome II.331 - Hirsch IV.691 - Eimas Heirs of Hippocrates n° 1097.
