The Quarterly Review. February & May 1810. Vol. III [Nos. V-VI]

London Printed. New York: Reprinted for Ezra Sargeant, 1810 - This early, interesting volume of the celebrated Quarterly Review is notable for the essay on Nelson by Robert Southey at pp. 218-262, reviewing four biographies. Southey wrote to Charles Danvers, 14 December 1809: "Yesterday I received a letter from Gifford requesting me to review the great life of Nelson, and offering me 20 guineas a sheet to do it . The Life of Nelson is by Stainer Clark, whose - laying unhallowed hands upon such a subject, I am desired not to spare." Editor William Gifford was "driven by circumstances to some omissions" as he wrote to Southey, but Murray subsequently reprinted the essay in its entirety as a separate book (1813). It is now recognized as one of the gems of English prose. Also in this volume are Southey's review of Vason's "Authentic Narrative of Four Years' Residence at Tongataboo, one of the Friendly Islands, in the South Sea", a contemporary notice of Ricardo's first separate publication, "The High Price of Bullion -", and several contributions on travel and exploration by John Barrow. Discussing Dentrecasteaux's "Voyage à la Recherche de la Pérouse", Barrow doubts the existence of cannibals (p. 38), a conviction subsequently repeated in other articles. Barrow's review of Staunton's "Ta Tsing Leu Lee; being the Fundamental Laws, and a Selection from the Supplementary Statutes of the Penal Code of China" begins "This is an extraordniary book in every point of view - the first book which has ever been translated immediately from the Chinese character into the English language." Elsewhere, rather disingenuosly, Barrow reviews a French translation of his "Voyage to Cochinchina". WITH several reviews by Sir Walter SCOTT: "Fatal Revenge: or the Family of Montorio: a Romance", Evans' "Old Ballads", Aikin's "Essays on Song Writing", and Evans' "Vocal Poetry" (Todd & Bowden 49A for the London edition). The reviews of Holford's "Wallace: or, the Flight of Falkirk. A Metrical Romance", pp. 63-69, and "Pursuits of Agriculture, a Satirical Poem, in Three Cantos" are also attributed to Scott. "The Lady of the Lake" is reviewed by George Ellis at pp. 492-517 (NELSON, LORD) First American Edition. 8vo. [vi], 438 pp. Contemporary acid calf. Joints rubbed, label chipped

Physionomies Nationales des Peuples , ou Les traits de leur Visage Comparés à leur Moeurs et Caractères

Paris: Delaunay, circa, 1810. Duodecimo, 25 engraved plates (all but one handcoloured); an excellent copy in contemporary marbled boards, extremities slightly chipped. Peoples of the world, and their physiognomies. First edition of this delightful French physiognomical study of the peoples of the world, which compares the facial structures and features of various European races with those of Asians, Africans, and the native inhabitants of many newly-discovered regions including Nootka Sound, Kamchatka, the Sandwich Islands, New Zealand and Australia. The detailed text is illustrated with fine handcoloured engraved plates mainly derived from voyage accounts; for example, the portraits of natives of the Hawaiian Islands, Tanna and Nootka Sound are all based on images that appeared in the publications of Cook's voyages, while the image of an Australian Aborigine is based on the engraving after Nicolas Petit published in Péron's account of the Baudin expedition. This is a rare work, known to Ferguson only from his own copy, noted in the Addenda, and not recorded by Forbes in the Hawaiian National Bibliography.

Eigenhändig geschriebenes Gedicht. 2 Seiten gefaltet.

(um 1810).. 23,2x18,5 cm. (sehr gut erhalten). Auflage:0. Christian Friedrich Raßmann (* 3. Mai 1772 in Wernigerode; + 9.

        Edinburgh

F.J.Sarjent, London 1810 - Aquatint, printed in colours with hand-colouring, by Sarjent. (Two small expertly repaired tears to blank margins). A beautiful and rare large format view of Edinburgh. Francis Sarjent drew, engraved and published this rare view of Scotland's capital city. This panoramic image is balanced and enlivened by the figures in the foreground of an old sailor (telescope under one arm), who stands talking to two young boys whilst the sailor's greyhound looks on. Various landmark buildings are identified beneath the image: The Bank, The New Prison, Prince Street, The Register Office and the Monument to the memory of Lord Nelson. Sarjent is also credited with having painted the images for a number of the plates in W.Richards & J.Sillett's 'The History of King's Lynn' (London & King's Lynn: 1812). A 19th-century gazetteer notes that 'Edinburgh presents, from almost every point of view whence it can be viewed such scenic and architectural groupings as are perhaps unrivalled in any existing city in the world. It possesses attractions peculiarly its own, and fixes the gaze and challenges the admiration of a spectator by displays of general excellence, unaided by the sumptuousness of any one object, and undergraded by the deteriorations from its prevailing style of magnificence.' (Fullarton [publishers] A Gazetteer of the World 1856, III, p.140).

The Life and Dreadful Sufferings of Captain James Wilson ... In the Missionary Ship Duff

Portsea: G.A. Stephens, 1810. Octavo, a little dusted, but a very good copy; period-style full sheep, spine banded and gilt, morocco label. First edition of this important and rare title, the first biography of Wilson. Wilson, a veteran ship's captain, took the first English missionaries, including George Vason, to the islands of the south Pacific. Inspired by the zeal of Joseph Hardcastle, Wilson sailed in 1796 together with some thirty missionaries on the famous Duff. This account gives valuable information regarding the voyage, as well as including a vigorous account of Wilson's life, and a detailed account of the tribulations of the missionaries during their first decade in the Pacific. 'Although there are several accounts of James Wilson's life, sufferings, and missionary voyage, this was the earliest biography of him to appear. Written anonymously, this lively telling follows Wilson's life from his birth in 1769 and early employment with the East India Company… He took notice of the London Missionary Society and offered his services to captain its ship, the Duff, on a voyage to deliver missionaries to South Pacific Islands. Four short chapters at the end of this volume deal with the progress of the various missions on Tahiti, Tongatabu, Port Jackson, and the Marquesas.' (Hill) There were several other accounts of Wilson and the Duff, including works by John Griffin, George Vason, Albert Étienne de Montemont, and William Smith. This title, with its unusual Portsea imprint, is probably the scarcest of all the published accounts, with only one auction sale recorded in the last thirty years. Ferguson knew it from copies in the Mitchell Library and the National Library of Australia.

[Text begins:] CANCION PATRIOTICA DE CARACAS

Caracas: Gallagher y Lamb, 1810.. Broadside, 12 1/4 inches. Worming in foremargin repaired. A very good copy. In the days immediately following the coup that deposed the Captain General and began the long process of independence, Andrés Bello, Venezuela's great poet, collaborated with Cayetano Carreño, "Maestro de Capilla" of the main church of Caracas cathedral, in the composing of several "patriotic songs." One of those early efforts became the national anthem of Venezuela. This is one that did not. It begins: "Caraqueños, otra época empieza: / De la gloria la senda se abrio." It was sung for the first time by Cayetano Carreño and six other voices on the night of April 23, 1810, three days after the coup, with the accompaniment of the military orchestra of the "Batallon Veterano." The performance took place below the balcony on which were assembled the members of the Supreme Junta. In addition to the historic collaboration of Bello and Carreño, this fabulous document has the distinction of having been printed by Venezuela's first press, that of Gallagher and Lamb, which arrived in Caracas in October 1808, and was almost certainly printed on April 24, the day after the hymn was first sung. This broadside seems to be completely unrecorded. It was unknown to imprint bibliographers Medina and Pedro Grases. Searches of NUC and OCLC fail to find any copy at all, as is the case when searching the OPACs of the national libraries of Venezuela, Colombia, Spain, France, and England. A stirring Revolutionary moment, by Venezuela's first great poet.

[Text begins:] LA SUPREMA JUNTA GUBERNATIVA DE ESTA CAPITAL, HA RECIBIDO CON LA MAYOR SATISFACCION EL VOTO SINCERO Y GENEROSO DE MUCHOS INDIVIDUOS ESPAÑOLES ENROPEOS [sic] DE COMERCIO DE ESTA CIUDAD

Caracas: Gallagher y Lamb, April 20, 1810.. Broadside, 12 1/4 inches tall. Slight worming in foremargin, touching but not costing three letters; repaired. A very good copy. On the day after the coup d'état that deposed the Captain General, the leaders of the governing junta in Caracas announce that many of the city's Spanish and European merchants have given their support to the new government. Whether they did so willingly or because of pressure is not known, but this is clearly a statement that is directed at both the hold-out merchants and at those hotheads who might seek to extract compliance extra- governmentally. Llamosas and Tovar Ponte were among the leading figures of the early Independence movement in Venezuela. The junta paid lip service to continued loyalty to the Spanish monarch imprisoned by the French; both served as president of Junta of Defense of the Rule of Fernando VII (later, The Revolutionary Junta), Llamosas from April 19 to August 1810, and Tovar August 1810 to March 2, 1811. Additionally, Tovar Ponte, the favorite son of an elite family, was a member of the 1811 Congress and a signer of the Venezuelan Act of Independence on July 5 of that year. This proclamation was printed by Venezuela's first press, that of Gallagher and Lamb, which only arrived in Caracas in October 1808. It is the fourteenth item in Pedro Grases' chronological list of things printed in Venezuela. Evidently the third known copy: Grases located only the copies in the Public Record Office in London and the Archivo de Indias in Seville. Searches of NUC and OCLC fail to find any copy at all. Further, no copies were found when searching the OPACs of the national libraries of Venezuela, Colombia, Spain, France, and England. A highly important document of the Venezuelan Revolution, issued the day of the overthrow of the old government. GRASES, HISTORIA DE LA IMPRENTA EN VENEZUELA 14.

[Text begins:] PROCLAMA QUE HIZO DON FRANCISCO RIVAS Y GALINDO, JOVEN DE EDAD DE QUINCE AÑOS, HIJO DE DON VALENTIN RIVAS UNO DE LOS SS. VOCALES DE LA SUPREMA JUNTA GUBERNATIVA DE CARACAS, À LOS HABITANTES DE VENEZUELA

Caracas: Gallagher & Lamb, April 20, 1810.. Broadside, 12 1/4 inches. Minor worming in foremargin, repaired. A very good copy. A broadside of the greatest importance, announcing the overthrow of the viceregal government in northern South America and the establishment of a new junta. Young Rivas, son of one of the leaders of the first independent government in Venezuela, calls on all Venezuelans to unite behind the new authority, saying "the inhabitants of this city" have overthrown an illegitimate government, have established a "supreme authority," and are now breathing "the air of Independence." He points out the remaining provinces are the body of the new nation and that without them Caracas is merely a bodyless head. "Unite or die" is his plea, and by doing so, "[w]e will form a nation that will know how to maintain the honor of the Spanish people and that will make all others respect us." The revolt of April 1810 was one of a series which rippled across Latin America that spring and summer. The catalyst was the proclamation of the Spanish Cortes, sitting in exile in Cadiz while the Peninsular War dragged on, to establish a Regency in the name of Ferdinand VII, still a French captive while Napoleon's brother Joseph ruled Spain. While outwardly a liberal step, this was in fact a reassertion of Spanish authority in the New World, and alarming to those dreaming of independence. The commissioners arrived in Caracas on April 19, 1810 and delivered their news. The next day - the day this broadside was issued - the new junta disposed of the captain-general of Venezuela, Emparan, and sent him into exile. The Revolution had begun, although lip service was still paid of loyalty to Ferdinand VII. This broadside was printed on the first regularly established press in Venezuela, and is only the sixteenth item in Pedro Grases' chronological list of things printed in Venezuela. The accepted date for "the beginning" of printing in Venezuela is October 1808, with the arrival of the press of Gallagher and Lamb and the first publication of Andrés Bello's GAZETA DE CARACAS. Grases locates only the copies in the Public Record Office (London) and the Archivo de Indias (Seville). Searches of NUC and OCLC fail to find any copy at all. Further, no copies were found when searching the OPACs of the national libraries of Spain, Venezuela, Colombia, France, and England, nor was it known to Medina. A key document in the history of Latin American independence. GRASES, HISTORIA DE LA IMPRENTA EN VENEZUELA 16. VILLASANA VI:108. CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICA III, p.102.

Huge Archive of Historically Important Documents

Monmouth, 1810. unbound. Outstanding and historically important archive of approximately 30 items outlining the Monmouth Militia, from its inception in 1810 as part of the First Brigade, 8th Division of the Massachusetts Militia, with which it served until the separation of Maine in 1820 and thereafter, when assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the Maine Militia. The archive consists of rare autographed manuscript documents, a broadside, war-date muster roll and ordinance reports, company orders, regimental orders and more. Some highlights of this offering include: a rare autographed manuscript "Brigade Order" signed by John Chandler as Brigadier General outlining the style and colors of the uniforms to be worn by the newly organized Company of Artillery in the First Brigade - 8th Division, under command of Capt. Samuel Ranlett. 4to, 1 page. Monmouth, August 4, 1810. In part: "...they will be a blue coat with red buff colored pantaloons and waistcoat, and...colored hat. The fashion of the coat to be such as the commissioned officers of the Company agree on..." On November 17, 1810, Capt. Ranlett issued what was possibly the first "Company Orders" of the newly formed Brigade, 8vo. 1p. Monmouth, agreeing to the above described Brigade Order of Aug. 4th and finalizing the choice of uniform style and colors as chosen by the commissioned officers. In part: "...The uniform of the company will be long coats of black broadcloth, faced with red broadcloth; buff colored pantaloons and waistcoat trimmed with red cord; chappabraw hats, with black plumes and red tops....the musicians will have red coats faced with black broadcloth..." Ranlett has docketed this Company Order "first to copper" which might explain why the State Maine Archives possesses a small broadside (said to be unique) while lacking a manuscript version of this document. There is a unusual war-date autographed document signed "Samuel Ranlett." 8vo, 1 page. Institution docket: Wiscasset, November 14, 1814. In part: "...To every non-commissioned officer and private that are absent in the Company under my command at roll calling. After the beating of the revalie...shall be drilled on parade by the corporal of the day previous to such offense...not less than one nor more than four hours: And are herein forbidden answering to their names in their tents nor unless they are asked." Important broadside, measuring 11" x 14", Division Orders, Eighth Division, Augusta, March 27, 1815. By order of Major-General Henry Sewell, the posting of the court martial proceedings of Capt. Thomas Eastman. Eastman was accused on two instances of defrauding the Mass. Board of War by filing fraudulent payrolls - charging the state for the wages, rations and clothing of one: Thomas Eastman Jr., a servant to himself, when in fact the younger Eastman was not employed as a servant. Also (in a separate charge) he received $1,500 in bills from the paymaster from the Worcester bank and then proceeded to exchange them for specie -- then purchased bills from certain Eastern banks (which were uncurrent and of depreciated value) at a discount of 10%, thereby depriving his company of the full value and benefit of the money received. Eastman was acquitted however; Major-General Sewell, while disposed to approve the opinion of the court, chose to admonish the captain, practically calling him a liar, in small part: "The evidence adduced by the defendant...is weak and uncertain and it is difficult how the court could acquit. Captain Eastman did receive currency, exchanged it for specie (as proved by his own witness) and purchased depreciated notes which were uncurrent. Whenever a bank has refused to redeem its own bills, those bills are publicly dishonored. The allegations in this specification therefore appear to be proved..." Also included is an original folio bound book, 13.5 x 8 inches, containing 15 autograph manuscript documents of the complete rolls of the Company of Artillery, 1st Brigade - 2nd Division of the Maine Militia, May 1821 to September 1824 -- some of the earliest signed documents of the transition period.

THE HISTORY OF LIVERPOOL, From the Earliest Authenticated Period Down to the Present Time; Illustrated with Views of the Principal Buildings in the Town and Vicinity ; A map of the Town , and one of the Adjacent Country

Printed and sold by William Robinson, Liverpool, 1810. First thus. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Size: Quarto (approx A4). viii,vi,389 pp + plates. 3/4 calf binding over marbled boards with gilt title on leather label on spine. Rebacked with new end papers. Boards a little scuffed but very securely bound. Usually called Troughton's History of Liverpool and ascribed to Thomas Troughton, who was the first publisher. Compiled by John Corry and George Perry and originally published serially by Troughton who had to stop publication because it did not pay. He never printed a t.p. or list of plates. When Robinson bought the copyright, he printed a t.p. and list of contents with his own name as publisher on the t.p., and bound into volumes the unsold parts which he took over from Troughton. Robinson also added a few plates to his issue. A map of the town accompanied Robinson's issue, but it was large, and intended for framing, and therefore not convenient for binding in the volume. Consequently few copies exist with it in although this volume contains a smaller version but lacks the map of the adjacent country mentioned on t.p.Illustrated plates not included in pagination. Contents lightly tanned with some sporadic light foxing. Page 85 lacking top corner, not affecting text. Evidence of bookworm (no longer present) but this does not detract from the attractiveness of the book as a whole. Overall this is a very clean, sound, collectable copy of this book.         A Sale of English-Beauties in the East Indies

London: circa, 1810. Etching with original handcolouring, 332 x 225 mm. (image size); in fine condition, with title intact, framed. Satire on the marriage market. Superb caricature satirising the shortage of marriageable women in the East Indies. The eighteenth century saw a massive expansion of British trading operations in India with numerous trading posts established along the coasts and large expatriate communities developing in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. With the escalation in English colonial activity, and the resultant vast increase in the size of the English community, the lack of wives for the traders became an acute problem. Stories abound of widows receiving marriage proposals at their husbands' funerals. The scene here shows the intense interest on the docks following the arrival of a boatload of marriageable women from London. Corpulent colonials and turbaned locals alike tweak and prod the ladies, like so much livestock, whilst a punctilious auctioneer asks for bids. In the background a singularly obese woman is sitting on a set of scales, slightly outweighing a barrel inscribed 'Lack of Rupees'. At the far right some sorrowful women are filing into a warehouse 'for unsaliable (sic) goods from Europe'. This scarce image was executed circa 1810, and is closely based on an earlier James Gillray aquatint cartoon of 1786 which is of even greater rarity. Rowlandson was a close friend of Gillray, and his revival of the image showed that the joke was still current, even if the fashions on display had been updated. The image is a neat counterpoint to Cruikshank's later cartoon on an opposite theme, the shortage of women in Britain now that so many have emigrated (see catalogue number XXX).

        Bourke's Parrot

London: circa, 1810. Original watercolour measuring 150 x 110mm., signed 'Howitt', fine condition, framed. Detailed original watercolour painting of an Australian Bourke's Parrot by Samuel Howitt (1756-1822). Howitt was a celebrated illustrator of animals, sporting scenes and other natural history subjects. Born into comfortable circumstances, Howitt was a keen rider, huntsman and angler who enjoyed the good life on his Essex property until overtaken by financial hardship. Although self-taught, he turned his hand to professional painting and illustration, specialising in sporting scenes. Significantly, Howitt contributed to the flourishing English trade in fine illustrated books - for example, some 38 aquatints after his sketches are included in Edward Orme's Foreign Field Sports (1814). In 1779 he married Elizabeth, sister of the caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson, and the two men became long-term friends. At a time when natural history illustration was becoming an increasingly specialised and scientific occupation, Howitt was a self-professed popular illustrator. In A New Work of Animals (1818) Howitt describes his role somewhat intermediately : 'The artist, studious to attain correctness, hopes he may deserve the approbation of the natural historian, and assist the pencil of the designer who has not had an opportunity to pay the same attention to this branch of the art'. Nonetheless, Howitt was widely regarded as an artist of considerable skill, with regular inclusions at Royal Academy shows and prestigious commissions for his hunting scenes. His services were sought by serious natural history collectors including Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall and William Bullock. Fawkes was an indefatigable natural history collector, while Bullock sold exotic specimens and owned the famous London museum bearing his name. Both collectors took some pride in their Australian ornithological specimens, and Howitt contributed to Bullock's museum catalogues and Fawkes' Synopsis of Natural History (1823). Howitt enjoyed Bullock's patronage for some time, as evidenced by his entry for the 1814 Royal Academy exhibition catalogue lists his place of residence as "Bullock's Museum, Piccadilly". This original watercolour is a pleasing example of Howitt's ability as a natural history illustrator, with fine detailing of the featherwork. Provenance: the Howitt family, by descent, until dispersal of the collection in very recent times.
