Two Portraits: Boy with Hoop and Young Girl in a Landscape

London, ca. 1810] - "Buck, Adam, 1758-1833, portrait painter, elder son of Jonathan Buck, a silversmith of Castle Street, Cork, was born there in 1759. With a younger brother, Frederick, he studied art from an early age, and acquired some repute in youth in his native city as a painter of miniature portraits in water-colour. Coming to London in 1795, he settled at 174 Piccadilly, and soon gained popularity. He not only continued to paint miniature portraits in water-colour, but produced many portraits in oil and crayon of larger size. Between 1795 and 1833, the year of his death, he exhibited at the academy as many as 171 pictures. He also exhibited ten other works at the British Institution and at the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street. But the pictures that he exhibited represent a small proportion of his labours. Numerous pictures by him were reproduced in coloured engravings, mostly in stipple, and had a wide circulation. Of extant coloured engravings after his pictures the originals of as many as forty or fifty are not known to have been exhibited. Among his sitters were the Earl of Cavan, the Duke of York, Sir Francis Burdett, Major Cartwright, John Cam Hobhouse, and John Burke, author of the Peerage,' and his family. His portraits were carefully finished, although they were stiff in treatment and design. Buck was at the same time busily employed as a teacher of portrait painting, and in 1811 he brought out a volume entitled Paintings on Greek Vases,' which contained a hundred designs, not only drawn, but also engraved by himself. This work, which was planned to continue a similar compilation by Sir William Hamilton, is now extremely scarce. In 1807 he moved from Piccadilly to Frith Street, Soho, and after several changes of residence died at 15 Upper Seymour Street West in 1833. Buck was married and left two sons, Alfred and Sidney; the latter followed his father's profession. A miniature portrait of Buck by himself dated 1804, is in the Sheepshanks gallery of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. " - DNB 10 x 7-1/2 inches (images. Meadow below the Flower Garden

Published by White and Co, London 1810 - A picturesque, tranquil view of the meadow adjacent to Hafod House from "Tour to Hafod," a fine collection of plates depicting the mansion and its surrounding landscape engraved by Stadler after drawings by Smith. Comprised of 15 views, Tour to Hafod also included comprehensive descriptive text by the scientist and collector James Edward Smith. The work was most likely intended as a tribute to the social benefactor and literary man Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), who devoted much of his life to his home region of Cardiganshire, where he served as a lord-lieutenant, a colonel in the militia, and an MP for the borough of Cardigan. Located in Cardiganshire, Western Wales, Hafodychtryd or Hafod for short, was Johnes's country estate. Hafod House, his principal residence, was erected in 1785 in the "gothic" style of Thomas Baldwin of Bath. Upon settling there, Johnes set about ameliorating the conditions of the local poor by providing them with comfortable housing and employing them in a planting project that would beautify the neighboring areas. In addition to his concern for social welfare, he was extremely interested in improving parts of Cardiganshire and actively involved himself in the building of roads and bridges. Born in Irthington in 1749, John "Warwick" Smith was an accomplished topographical draughtsman and watercolourist, who enjoyed the generous patronage of the Earl of Warwick. In addition to his fine engravings of Italy, he contributed numerous illustrations to topographical publications such as Select Views in Great Britain (1812), Views of the Lakes of Cumberland (1791-5), Tour through Wales (1794), and A Tour to Hafod (1810). In 1805, Smith became a member of the Watercolour Society, where he frequently exhibited his works. Cf. Abbey, Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland, 533; cf. Dictionary of National Biography. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light foxing, mild rippling, and a small water stain in the bottom margin.

From the Library of New York Signer William Floyd

New York 1810 - Signed Book. Hannah More, Coelebs in Search of a Wife: Comprehending Observations on Domestic Habits and Manners, Religion and Morals. New York, I. Riley, 1810. 5th American ed. Vol. 1 (of 2), 214 pp. Signed in ink on corner of flyleaf, "Wm. Floyd 1813." This is the 5th American edition of a popular moralistic novel by Englishwoman Hannah More, first published in 1809 and frequently reprinted on both sides of the Atlantic. Historical BackgroundWilliam Floyd (1734-1821) was a gentleman farmer from Brookhaven, Long Island, New York. He was a member of the Suffolk County Militia during the American Revolution, rising to major general. He represented New York in the First and Second Continental Congress (1774-1776), and signed the Declaration of Independence, after New York's legislature permitted its delegates to switch its vote to affirm the irrevocable step on July 9, 1776. Floyd was elected to the First Congress as an anti-Federalist, and served from 1789 to 1791. He later served in the state senate.Hannah More (1745-1833), educator, writer, and social reformer, was born in Stapleton, near Bristol, England. She became a teacher at her older sister's boarding school in Bristol, and wrote pastoral plays such as The Search after Happiness. More moved to London, into an elite literary and political circle which included Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke, and William Wilberforce. She continued to write books, poems, and moralistic tracts such as Character of a Young Princess (1805), Christian Morals (1813), and Coelebs in Search of a Wife (1809). Her Village Politics, by Will Chip (1792) was designed to counter the radical political and religious views of Thomas Paine and the French Revolution. More also helped establish schools for the poor.ConditionContemporary half calf and paper boards (rubbed). TORPEDO WAR, AND SUBMARINE EXPLOSIONS.

New York: Printed by William Elliot, . 1810 - 57,[3]pp. plus five plates. Oblong quarto. Original printed wrappers, bound by a pebbled cloth backstrip. Wrappers torn and stained, foredge of front wrapper mended. Most leaves with some edge wear, final ten leaves with a small semi-circular tear in lower edge, not affecting text. Old vertical crease, light tanning, occasional offsetting. Overall, still a very good copy, in original condition. In a cloth chemise and slipcase, spine gilt. The rare first edition of Fulton's famous treatise on torpedo warfare, probably the most important early work devoted to this novel naval technology. Herein Fulton describes his system of submarine explosives which he had demonstrated to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other leaders from the House and Senate, at the home of his friend, Joel Barlow. The plates depict the brig, Dorothea, "as she was blown up on the 15th of Oct. 1805," a submerged torpedo mine, and other illustrations showing how the torpedo is carried aboard a vessel, how a harpoon is used in torpedo explosives, etc. One of the chapters is about "the Imaginary Inhumanity of Torpedo War." Fulton was a skilled artist, inventor, and civil engineer. A native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he spent twenty years abroad in England developing his talents and inventions. His chief work was in the design of canal systems, so important to commercial activity in 19th-century America, and in the development of steamboats. An important work of American military technology. RINK 2195. HOWES F417, "b." SABIN 26199. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 20177. DAB VII, pp.68-71.

In fine condition. 2 volumes in 1. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of what can be called the first attempt at a hydrological survey of Portugal. Over a half-century later, it was still the only such work of any significance, according to Rodrigues de Gusmão (as quoted by Innocêncio). The greater part of the first volume consists of an inventory of all known sources for mineral water within continental Portugal, as well as the Island of São Miguel in the Azores. Each source is carefully classified and located geographically. The book begins with a general consideration of the medicinal properties of water. It then discusses the properties of different waters, such as those which contain gas, are naturally warm, saline, or contain sulfur. Toward the end of the first volume is further discussion of waters with differing properties, how to examine and analyze them, more on the healthful qualities of water, and how to choose the most effective. There is a section of purification.Tavares concludes that by far the best waters were those of Caldas da Rainha, which were already famous, with a number of books written about them in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The second volume is devoted entirely to the medicinal properties of the thermal waters of Caldas, what time of year to go there, diverse methods of application, and special dietary measures to be followed when at the spa.The author, born in Coimbra after 1750, died in Lisbon, 1812. He was a physician on the Medical Faculty of the Universidade de Coimbra, Primeiro Medico da Real Camara, @Physico?mór do Reino, and a member of the Academia Real das Sciencias de Lisboa and the Academia de Medicina de Barcelona. An English creamware commemorative jug.

circa 1810 - With loop handle, printed in black with a half-length portrait of Nelson, titled above, England Expects every Man to do his Duty and ADMIRAL LORD NELSON/Born Sept 29th. 1758 - Died Oct 21st 1805./Aged 47, below, the reverse with a map and text documenting the Battle of Trafalgar. 5¾ in. high(14.6 cm.) The present jug commemorates the life and achievements of Lord Nelson and his naval victory over the Napoleonic allied troops at Trafalgar in 1805. Often hailed as the most influential naval figure in British history, Lord Horatio Nelson was famed for his charismatic leadership in battle and for his skilled understanding of military strategy at sea. During the Battle of Trafalgar, in which Lord Nelson lost his life, the British marine forces, outnumbered by the enemy, was nevertheless able to defeat the Franco-Spanish fleet in what is still remembered as the most crucial naval victory of the British against Napoleon.

Nueva real cédula de la compañia de Filipinas de 12 de Julio de 1803

1810 - Maximum Spanish edict for government in the Philippines. 1803. Madrid. Imprenta de la viuda de Ibarra. In folio (330 mm x 225 mm). 2 ff. + 44 + 2 ff. Later half vellum over boards, slightly soiled. A fine and fresh copy, with all margins intact. A fine copy, printed on thick paper. The Cedula follows two previous ones made by Charles III in 1778 and 1785 (Real cedula de ereccion de la Compañia de Filipinas de 10 de marzo de 1785), amending and updating them. Under Carlos III a far-reaching change in Spanish colonial commercial policy was introduced, by which the government gradually removed the restrictions on trade between Spain and the colonies. The Compania de Caracas had lost its monopoly in 1781, although it had not been abolished. It had suffered financially during the American War of Independence, and in 1785 it stockholders accepted a proposal to dissolve the Company and to invest their capital in a new Company with a monopoly of trade with the Philippine Islands. The new organization, the Compania de Filipinas, succeeded in increasing trade between Spain and a hitherto dormant possession. Engraved royal arms of Charles V (1788 ¿ 1808) as frontispiece. SKETCHES OF A TOUR TO THE WESTERN COUNTRY, THROUGH THE STATES OF OHIO AND KENTUCKY; A VOYAGE DOWN THE OHIO AND MISSISSIPPI RIVERS, AND A TRIP THROUGH THE MISSISSIPPI TERRITORY, AND PART OF WEST FLORIDA.

Pittsburgh. 1810. - 504pp. 12mo. Contemporary calf, brown gilt morocco label, spine gilt. Rubbed, spine a bit worn with expert repairs along hinges. Small dampstain and contemporary ownership signature on titlepage, scattered foxing throughout. Overall very good. Thomson calls this one of the most interesting works relating to the West. It is likely that this account was edited by Zadok Cramer, from whose press it was issued, and who included over one hundred pages of other information on the West gathered by himself, which follows the Cuming narrative. These include contributions by Loskiel, Forsyth, Hildreth, Badger, and Heckewelder, among others. Cuming himself undertook his tour in 1807 and 1808. An excellent account, one of the most notable early trips down the Mississippi to New Orleans and environs. BUCK 71. CLARK II:13. HOWES C947. JONES 739. SABIN 17890. GRAFF 944. STREETER SALE 1325. It may be that the libretto was wholly original to Mozart and the poet, for the subject is sometimes claimed to have been suggested to Mozart and Da Ponte by Joseph II himself, allegedly on the basis of a recent real-life incident...""Così fan tutte is widely reckoned to be the most carefully and symmetrically constructed of the Da Ponte operas."
