A Dissertation on the Numbers of Mankind, in Ancient and Modern Times

Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Co., 1809. Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Co., 1809. Second edition, revised and corrected. Hardcover. Near fine. ii, 338 p. 24 cm. 2 tables within text. Rebound in beige cloth and grey paper boards. Ink signature on title page. Robert Wallace (1697-1771) was a minister of the Church of Scotland as well as an economist. In this work, first published in 1753, Wallace criticizes the chapter called "Populousness of Ancient Nations" in David Hume's "Political Discourses." Wallace argued that the population of the ancient world was greater than in modern times, a theory which Hume refuted. Nevertheless, this work, as well as Wallace's "Characteristics of the Present State of Great Britain" (1761) influenced the population growth theories of Robert Malthus. The fact that this dissertation was reprinted 56 years after its original publication indicates the revival of interest in population studies once Malthus published.

Bishop Burnet's History of His Own Time

London - Re. H. Evnas; J. Mackinlay, et al, 1809. London - Re. H. Evnas; J. Mackinlay, et al, 1809 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A complete edition of Burnet's popular historical work in need of a sympathetic binding and priced accordingly. Bound in leather with gilt lettering. Complete in Four Volumes. From the Restoration of King Charles II to the Conclusion of the Treaty of Peace at Utrecht, in the Reign of Queen Anne. To which are prefixed, a summary recapitulation of affairs in church and state, from King James I to the Restoration in 1660. Together with the Author's Life, and some Explanatory Notes by the Editor, his son. The Whole Revised and Corrected by Him. Ever since the appearance of Bishop Burnet's History of his Own Time it has been the subject of great controversy. It engendered much excitement and clearly sold well in England, each volume going through a number of editions -ODNB. Burnet's critics often accuse him of overstating, in his History and elsewhere, his own importance in the events of his time. While it is true that Burnet was an egomaniac, and he undoubtedly expected future historians to study him, there is much truth to his assertions. His career can be evaluated by dividing it into two, sometimes overlapping, spheres: his engagement in public affairs and his vocation as an author -ODNB. Condition: The textblock binding is tight and firm. The front board of volume one is missing. There are several boards missing, and the remaining boards are held by the cords only. There is significant wear to the extremities, including significant rubbing and edge wear, with loss to the spine. There is significant loss to the spine of volume one. Internally the pages are generally bright withintermittent spots, prominent to the first and last few pages. There are occasional ink marks. Overall the condition is fair with a very good interior..

Innsbruck, 15. VIII. 1809.. ¾ S. Folio.

(Vergl. ADB XXII,501ff.). - "Dieses wichtigste Werk der 'polit.
