Paris: J.J.Fuchs [volumes I-III], Delachaussee [volumes 4-6], 1799-1808. - 6 volumes. 4to., (12 6/8 x 9 6/8 inches). Half-titles (some minor foxing, volume V with light water-stain to inner lower corner throughout). 300 fine engraved plates, printed in colour and finished by hand, including 4 double-page (a few with imprints/captions trimmed, one slightly creased, a few short tears). Bound from the original 51 parts which were published from 1796 until Levaillant's death in 1824 with the manuscript and accompanying 52 original drawings by Reinold for the seventh volume and 115 further original drawings for subsequent volumes unpublished. "It gives a comprehensive account of the birds of South Africa , based on Levaillant's personal experiences and the collections he made during his journeys in that region. The style of the text is lively, and it gives descriptions not only of the names of the birds, but also of their habits and habitats" (Anker). "Levaillant was until exceeded by Gould (and until now only by him) the producer of the most comprehensive series of works on exotic birds." (Fine bird books p. 118). The son of the French consul in Dutch Guiana , Levaillant was born in Paramarimbo and seems to have inherited his father's love of travel. He became one of the first of a new breed of naturalists who attained prominence towards the end of the 18th century, studying and recording their subjects in their natural habitat. Anker 297.

      - Firenze, 1808.

Autograph letter signed "H. Berlioz," in all likelihood to the French composer and music theorist Antoine Elwart

"[Berlioz] stands as the leading musician of his age in a country—France—whose principal artistic endeavour was then literary, and in an art—music—whose principal pioneers were then German. In many senses the Romantic movement found its fullest embodiment in him, yet he had deep Classical roots and stood apart from many manifestations of that movement. His life presents the archetypal tragic struggle of new ideas for acceptance, to which he gave his full exertions as composer, critic and conductor. And though there were many who perceived greatness in his music from the beginning, his genius only came to full recognition in the 20th century." Hugh Macdonald in Grove Music Online. Elwart's (1808-1877) "compositions include operas, masses and many other sacred works, oratorios, songs and instrumental music, but he is better known for his writings. His numerous theoretical treatises were widely used and, though lacking originality, reveal careful thought." M.C. Carr in Grove Music Online.. 1 page. Octavo (ca. 186 x 125 mm). Dated "Wednesday evening." In black ink on dark ivory paper. In French (with translation). With original autograph envelope, ca. 106 x 135 mm., with Elwart's Paris address in black ink. Berlioz asks "My Dear Elwart" to send him "the membership list of our quoits club [société du disque], together with the address of each member" as soon as possible. He will send Elwart tickets for his "next important concert." Somewhat browned; creased at folds; remnants of former mount to upper margin of blank verso; envelope worn, soiled, and creased.

Three addresses,

8vo., (3) - 45 (3)pp., with 5 woodcut illustrations in the text, wanting the half-title but with the final blank (F4), light marginal dampstain in several leaves at end, title-page a little dust-soiled, recent marbled boards lettered on spine, entirely uncut. A good, large, copy. An off-the-wall paper on a proposal to supply steam-operated washing machines to the Royal Navy for laundering clothes at sea, on a similar wash-house scheme on land and for brewing beer, baking bread and making dumplings at sea. Dalrymple's first Address describes in considerable detail - and with a woodcut illustration - his proposed naval washing-machine. The machine, the author suggests, would have three enormous advantages: viz. no damage to clothes due to no friction or rubbing; health promotion due to the "powerful and penetrating nature" of steam which will "destroy all verming, their eggs, and seeds, and also .... any infectious disease"; and, thirdly, the use of "much less soap" than in the "common way". The author's second Address pursues the same theme but extends the washing-machine's usefulness to land-based wash-houses. He cites several advantages, not least to London. "The benefit will be great to London, and other great cities, where washing costs nearly double of what it does in any other part of the kingdom; where the washing is performed in garrets, often by careless unknown people, without drying places; and where there are no washing-greens to spread clothes upon. But the meanest householder woman might, by means of steam, wash for her family at almost no expence except that of soap .....". A second advantage was the "durability of goods washed", the author noting that the usual rubbings, twisting, beating, squeezing, and so forth, would be avoided. And, thirdly, Londoners were disadvantages by lack of space for "washing-greens on which the goods washed may be exposed to the sun and air". The steam wash system together with an overnight soaking of the clothes in a "bleaching liquor" or "liquid oxygenated muriatic acid" would resolve the problem. The clothes would be so white that "the finest lady in London can get the finest pieces of her dress washed as transparent in London, by means of steam, as can be done in the country". Dalrymple's third Address describes in detail a system of brewing beer, making bread and yeast dumplings on board ship. He includes a note about "making beer from sugar or molasses, for supplying the inhabitants of the East and West Indies. Sir John Dalrymple (1726-1810), lawyer and historian, was a prot?g? of the Duke of Argyll and of Lord North. He was "an active, well-liked if sometimes irritating member of the Edinburgh literati, and a prominent member of important societies such as the Select Society, the Poker Club, and the Glasgow Literary Society. He was an early prot?g? of Lord Kames and a member of a circle which included David Hume and Adam Smith". [Nicholas Phillipson in ODNB]. None of Dalrymple's projects and chemical inventions was patented.

        Insecta Svecica descripta. I:1-3.

1808 - Skara, F. J. Leverentz, 1808-13. 8:o. VIII,(4),572 + XIX,(1),660 + (4),730,(2) pp.Three volumes uncut and unopened in near contemporary half calf with sparingly gilt spines. Spines faded and somewhat dry. Occasional damp- and soilstains in outer margins. Tear in lower margin on p. 499 in part I and old repair on p. 529 in volume I:3, also in lower margin. Bookplate. From Ericsberg Castle in Sweden.A fourth part (tomus I, pars 4) was printed in Leipzig in 1827. The work was rewarded with a gold medal by the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Leonard Gyllenhaal (1752-1840) studied briefly at Uppsala University where he seems to have received tuition by Linnaeus, among others. However, family tradition steered him towards the safety of a military career which ended with his retirement as a major in 1799. He was now able to concentrate on his life as a gentleman farmer on the family estate Höberg in Västergötland and his great entomological work on Swedish beetles. The printing of "Insecta Svecica", in which a total of 2190 different beetles are described, was payed for by Gyllenhaal himself and consumed a large part of his fortune. The result became a pioneer work in its field, with a level of details in the decriptions which were unsurpassed at the time. Gyllenhaal also introduced new methods for determining insect species and new foundations for the classification of beetles. And yes, he is also the forefather of two not entirely unknown Hollywood actors. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Postscript to the Concise Account of the Origin and Progress of the Rocket System

15 pp. 4to, attractive antique diced half-russia & marbled boards, spine gilt. London: J. Whiting, 1808. First edition. Congreve (1772-1828), is best known for creating the first rocket weapons system and initiating the modern processes of research and development in rocketry. His greatest interest was in "improving and perfecting the rocket as a military weapon. England subsequently adopted 'Congreve rockets,' which were used with great success against the French at Boulogne, Copenhagen, Leipzig, and elsewhere. They were copied by most European armies by 1830."-D.S.B., III, p. 388. "As some objections have been urged to the use of the rocket on the score of impolicy, it appears necessary to add a few works on this subject; and I must say, that if it be fairly considered, the advantages will be found to be all on our own side of the question."-p. 3. Congreve proceeds to explain the ability of rockets to penetrate fortifications from a great distance. Fine copy and rare. .

The subject of 'rhabdomancy' or 'subterranean electrometry', here called 'animal electrometry' pre-occupied several scientists of the period including the Milan based Amoretti who wrote several tracts on the subject from 1798 onwards, summarizing his extensive researches in the present volume, especially in relation to galvanism. The subject had, of course, a great bearing upon the theory of the divining rod and other esoteric beliefs at the time, especially as espoused by the German scientific community - Ritter would shortly after translate this work into German.         A most pleasant, fruitful, and witty Work, of the best State of a Public Weal, and of the new Isle called Utopia

London: William Bulmer, at the Shakespeare Press, for William Miller,, 1808. Translated into English by Raphe Robinson, A. D. 1551. A new edition; with copious notes, and a biographical and literary introduction by the Rev. T. F. Dibdin. 2 volumes, small octavo (180 × 120 mm). Contemporary polished calf, flat bands ruled in gilt to spine forming compartments, twin morocco letterpieces to second and third, remaining compartments with floral cornerpieces and quatrefoil centrepieces gilt, single fillet rules gilt to covers, board-edges mitred gilt, all edges speckled red, Engraved portrait frontispiece and 11 woodcuts (5 headpieces and 6 to the text). Joints and tips slightly rubbed, frontispiece, light browning, still a very good copy. First Dibdin edition, trade issue, attractively bound. Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776-1846) trained as a lawyer but is best remembered as a bibliographer. His career "blossomed in 1802 with An Introduction to the Knowledge of Rare and Valuable Editions of the Greek and Latin Classics Â… Despite an extravagant and inflated style, Dibdin popularized the word 'bibliomania', a term evocative of that era's antiquarian interests" (ODNB). There was also a large paper issue, with 150 copies printed according to Dibdin, and 250 according to Lowndes. As the title states, Utopia tells of the best order of society, the ideal commonwealth, which is to be found on the island of Utopia. Its protagonist is the Portuguese traveller Raphael Hythlodaye, who relates that he accompanied Amerigo Vespucci on three of his four journeys to the New World, including one on which he remained behind in order to explore further. Hythlodaye (whose name means "one who is cunning in nonsense") then relates his experiences of the distant island (Utopia means "nowhere land"; More and Erasmus also referred to it merely as Nusquam, or "nowhere"), where all property is held in common ownership, where six hours a day are devoted to work and the rest to recreation, where gold and silver are used not as currency but as the material for making shackles and chamber pots, and slaves (criminals and prisoners of war) are treated fairly. The island bears a remarkable resemblance to England, providing a source of satire on contemporary life and government.
