Zoho kafu benran [trans. Textile Designs of India].

27 full-page woodcuts (the first heightened in color). 24 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers (unimportant worming, mostly in gutter), orig. block printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. N.p.: 1808. Second edition, an abridgement of the author's earlier work which appeared in 1781 (an impossibly rare book). In the 17th and 18th centuries, there was an active trade between India and Japan, importing Indian "sarasa" chintz -- a highly glazed printed calico -- from the Coromandel coast to the island nation. Manuals were produced in Japan with color directives to encourage Japanese textile printers to copy the Indian designs. In this manual, the author describes the complicated technique in which colors are fixed on the surface of cotton with woodblock mordant stamping. Endless varieties of vegetable, animal, and mineral pigments were employed. The very attractive frontispiece depicts the textile designer planning a forthcoming design. He sits at a desk with pens, inks, and a blank sheet of fabric. Fine copy. .

        The Microcosm of London.

London R. Ackermann -1810 1808 - Three volumes, 4to., 3 engraved title pages, 3 engraved dedication leaves, 104 finely hand-coloured aquatint plates after Rowlandson and Pugin, contemporary russia, covers with broad gilt borders, neatly rebacked to style, all edges gilt, a handsome set. The Microcosm was the first major colour plate book published by the celebrated nineteenth century publisher, Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834). It originally appeared in monthly parts, usually by subscription, between 1808 and 1810. Each issue cost seven shillings and included four coloured plates. It later appeared in its final bound folio format of three volumes, each containing over thirty full-page hand-coloured aquatints depicting London's principal buildings in the nineteenth century. The Microcosm was a new undertaking in that it treated Regency London pictorially, and ranged over new and ancient buildings and meeting places, capturing the mood of London at the time. Life in London during the Regency era was distinctive for its architecture, literature, fashions, and politics. Socially, it was a combination of two extremes, with extravagance and opulence for the aristocracy with their affluent buildings to the overcrowded slums and poverty endured by the poor. It was an era of economic uncertainty caused by the Napoleonic Wars, and social unrest due to the Industrial Revolution and its introduction of machine-based labour over manual labour. The three volumes are laid out in the form of a dictionary, with the buildings listed alphabetically for ease of reference. From the introduction, Ackermann puts forward his intentions in producing such a work. It is aimed at those inhabitants of London who are either too busy to appreciate the architecture surrounding them, or those who are largely familiar with it, but not in great detail. It would also appeal to visitors to the city for the first time as a source of reference. Two-thirds of the buildings included no longer exist, which adds to its appeal today. These include The Pillory, The Old Bailey, King's Bench Prison, Royal Cockpit in Birdcage Walk, Brooks' Subscription House, India House of Charles Lamb, and King's Mews (now the National Gallery). (University of Reading). Pugin supplied the architectural drawings which have an accuracy and serene beauty which provide the perfect contrast to Rowlandson's figures of the population of London engaged in their everyday life. "The most magnificent [book] in artistic scope, admirable from its encyclopaedic readiness to guide us through all aspects of life concealing little was the Microcosm of London. A good copy of the Microcosm is a fine work indeed, first among Ackermann's major books, a notion of all London open to view, the world of poor or rich, wretched or mighty. The London book was a true Microcosm: charities, churches, prisons, fairs, courts, markets, theatres, hospitals. The alphabetic order of appearance was more effective than more obvious divisions. for we have them mixed, the book like life." (Franklin). Abbey Scenery 212; Tooley 7; Prideaux pp121-4.         De Jordaan - P.J. Lutgers, 1857.

Prijs: € 3.150,-.

        David, Jules - Fashion.

ELEGANTE DAMES IN HET BOIS DE BOULOGNEMode tekening met pen en waterverf op karton door Jules David (1808 - Parijs - 1892). Gesigneerd links onder. Verso gedateerd/beschreven: "1877 / 3ème No d"Avril / No 16"'. Prijs: € 985,- (incl. 21% BTW).

The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Covenant, commonly called the Old and New Testament: Translated from the Greek. By Charles Thomson.

Philadelphia: Pr. by Jane Aitken 8vo (22 cm; 8.5"). 4 vols. I: [252] ff. II: [245] ff. III: [222] ff. IV: [240] ff.. 1808 The first-ever translation into English of the Septuagint, the first English translation of the New Testament by an American, and the first Bible printed by an American woman — Jane Aitken. It was also the first translation of the Greek New Testament into English by a native of Ireland, and of course it is the work of a key figure of the American Revolution. Charles Thomson was born in County Derry, Ireland, 29 November 1729 and arrived with his brothers in the American colonies as an orphan in 1740, his mother having died before embarkation and his father having died at sea during the crossing. He studied ancient languages and theology; through the influence of Benjamin Franklin received the mastership of the Latin school in Philadelphia (now the William Penn Charter School); kept records of proceedings at the Treaty of Easton (1757) on behalf of the Indian tribes, and was adopted into the Delaware Indian nation; served as the secretary of every congress from 1774 until 1789; and designed the Great Seal of the United States. An abolitionist and ardent supporter of the Revolutionary cause, he was characterized by a fellow Revolutionary (John Adams) as “the Sam Adams of Philadelphia, the life of the cause of liberty,” and by a conservative (Joseph Galloway) as “one of the most violent of the Sons of Liberty in America.” It was he who informed George Washington of his election to the presidency. => On 4 July 1776 only two signatures were affixed to the unanimously adopted Declaration of Independence — those of John Hancock, president of the Congress, and Charles Thomson, secretary, in order to authenticate the document that had been voted on and approved. Yet by a curious twist of fate (read rather, surely, of a political enemy's knife), when the calligraphic copy that is so well known to every school child was ready shortly after 19 July, authenticator Thomson was not invited to sign it! When he had retired from public life in 1789, Thomson was to turn his interest in the Bible and Greek to the 20-year task of producing this monumentally important work. Its printer was the daughter of Robert Aitken, who had printed the first Bible in English in America. A major edition of the English Bible, this is essential for any Bible collection, not just for collections of American Bibles — though as an American Bible and simple Americanum it has a revered place. Provenance: 19th-century signatures of D. Shields and of John K. Wilson in ink and pencil on title-pages, one of Wilson's signatures dated 1871. Recent quarter brown calf with stone-pattern marbled paper sides; a lightly tanned set with occasional light spotting only. => A solid and very good set.

Palma[, Mallorca]: En la imprenta de Brusi, 1812. 4to. 48 pp. Two significant Mallorcan imprints of the Napoleonic wars by Pedro Cevallos (1764–1840). The Exposicion details the perfidy of Napoleon in Spain, in particular his luring of Ferdinand VII away from Madrid and the placing of Joseph Bonaparte on the throne. This piece proved an effective piece of anti-French propaganda, was widely published, and was translated into Portuguese, English, German, and French. In the Politica peculiar Cevallos reveals Napoleon's attitude toward the Church, and his desire, if he could not absolutely destroy Catholicism, at least to bring it under thorough state subjection. Both of these editions were issued in Mallorca and they are rare: Via NUC Pre-1956 and WorldCat, we trace only one copy of the Exposicion and three of Politica in the U.S. Contemporary acid-stained calf simply gilt with brown leather label on each spine; scattered wormholes and some loss of leather over corners and at base of spine. Endpapers stencilled red and green. Some interior worming, most noticeable in endpapers and first title-page, resulting in loss of parts of letters without loss of sense. Scattered light foxing and a few leaves shallowly dog-eared. Inked ownership inscription on title-pages. All edges speckled red.

        Gazeta de México.

Mexico 1808 The Gazetas de México began on 14 January 1784 as a semiweekly newspaper and when it ceased publishing (30 December 1809) it extended to 16 volumes — having along the way switched to being a biweekly. The present volume (XIV) covers 2 January 1808 through 16 April 1808, in other words till just before news arrived of Napoleon's treachery in Spain, with coverage of the war in Europe; British military actions in the Caribbean, Uruguay, and Argentina; ship arrivals; cargoes unloaded; notices from the provinces; Miranda's revolt in Venezuela; and even a comet seen in Europe. Provenance: Ex-John Carter Brown library, properly deaccessioned. Sewn, removed from and now loosely laid into its original Mexican mottled sheep binding, this with a modestly gilt spine bearing a green leather gilt title-label and with an old paper label on its front cover. Some issues lightly soiled or with a bit of spotting/staining, else generally clean and very good.

Marbled page ends. Shelf wear to boards. Signature of Frederick York Powell, 1898. Powell was a noted English historian and scholar. Additional signature of L. Kennedy 1905. Fourier written in blue ink on title page. Pencil notes to end blanks in Kennedy's handwriting. Refs: En Francais dans le texte, 218; Arthur Bestor, Backwoods Utopias, p. 13; Barbier IV, 704; Del Bo, Fourier, p. 5; Gimon 82; Goldsmiths'-Kress 19750; Weller II, 264; OCLC: Stanford, Cornell, St. Gallen and Edinburgh; see R. Schaer, G. Claeys, and L.T.Sargent, Utopia, The Search for the Ideal Society in the Western World, 2000, pp. 208 ff. Fourier was a radical thinker who created a plan for an ideal society. He respected the industry and intelligence of children, acknowledged the validity of same sex relationships and androgyny, and coined the term feminism. Theorie des quatres mouvements (Theory of four movements), first edited in 1808 and reworked up to its final draft of 1841, is the first, fundamental work in which Fourier declares his objectives for a world government and economy administered by Passionate Attraction ("a theory of universal Harmony that springs from the ruins of uncertain sciences"), the only possibility, in his terms, of transforming society ("remediating everything from the most scandalous social disorders to poverty"). Going against morals and ideologies that preach poverty and mediocrity, Fourier defends opulence, luxury, gluttony and sensuality for all. He argued that a natural social order exists corresponding to Newton?s ordering of the physical universe and that both evolved in eight ascending periods. In harmony, the highest stage, man?s emotions would be freely expressed. That stage could be created, he contended, by dividing society into phalanges. The phalange, in Fourier?s conception, was to be a cooperative agricultural community bearing responsibility for the social welfare of the individual, characterized by continual shifting of roles among its members. He felt that phalanges would distribute wealth more equitably than under capitalism and that they could be introduced into any political system, including a monarchy. The individual member of a phalange was to be rewarded on the basis of the total productivity of the phalange. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Letter to the Livery of London, relative to the views of the writer in executing the Office of Sheriff. Second edition

London: T. Gillett, 1808. Octavo, fine uncut copy in original publisher's boards (rubbed), with old manuscript label to spine; spine worn and joints neatly repaired. A compassionate and carefully reasoned appeal for clemency, with specific criticism of transportation: 'Phillips points out the cruelty and injustice of transporting female offenders, often for very trifling crimes, to Botany Bay, nominally for a limited period, but in reality for life, no provision being made for their return' (Ferguson).Writing in his capacity as a Sheriff of London and Middlesex, Phillips was gravely concerned with the state of prisoners and describes problems of nutrition, heating, and other abuses of detainees in some detail. Conditions in British prisons and the arbitrary role of gaolers came under increasing scrutiny during the early years of the nineteenth-century, as a direct continuation of the work of the great reformer John Howard. This book prints a range of letters from Phillips to gaolers, magistrates and other officials, so describing the individual misfortunes of those who have earned his pity, including women sentenced to transportation to New South Wales. As a curious footnote to the social history of the era, the author details his expenses, lists members of the Sheriff's fund and itemises disbursements for the year 1808 to the close of March (we learn, for example, that Phillips allowed some £7/15s for 'oatmeal, onions, and leeks, for a daily supply of oatmeal porridge for the female convicts').

The name of Gillray's publisher and print seller, Miss Hannah Humphrey is inextricably associated with that of the caricaturist. Gillray lived with Miss (often called Mrs) Humphrey during the entire period of his fame. It is believed that he several times thought of marrying her, and that on one occasion the pair were on their way to the church, when Gillray said: "This is a foolish affair, methinks, Miss Humphrey. We live very comfortably together; we had better let well alone." Gillray has been called the father of the political cartoon, with his satirical works calling the king, prime ministers and generals to account. Regarded as being one of the two most influential cartoonists, the other being William Hogarth, Gillray's wit and humour, knowledge of life, fertility of resource, keen sense of the ludicrous, and beauty of execution, at once gave him the first place among caricaturists. One of Gillray's prints, "Twopenny Whist," is a depiction of four individuals playing cards, and the character shown second from the left, an ageing lady with eyeglasses and a bonnet, is widely believed to be an accurate depiction of Miss Humphrey.Gillray's prints were exposed in Humphrey's shop window, where eager crowds examined them. One of his later prints, "Very Slippy-Weather", shows Miss Humphrey's shop in St. James's Street in the background. In the shop window a number of Gillray's previously published prints, such as Tiddy-Doll the Great French Gingerbread Maker, Drawing Out a New Batch of Kings; His Man, Talley Mixing up the Dough, a satire on Napoleon's king-making proclivities, are shown in the shop window. While many of Gillray?'s prints evolved from his own designs, still others were based on the suggestions of amateurs (prints commissioned after others?' designs were an important source of income for Gillray). This print was one of a series of seven on the weather initiated by Gillray?'s friend, the Reverend John Sneyd. Sneyd often provided ideas and sketches for the artist?'s elaboration, and was, as well, an intermediary between Gillray and George Canning from the time Canning entered Parliament, in service to the Tory cause. Gillray distinguishes his role by inscribing ?"etch?'d by Js. Gillray,?" rather than crediting himself as ?"inventor.?"While many of Gillray?'s prints evolved from his own designs, still others were based on the suggestions of amateurs (prints commissioned after others?' designs were an important source of income for Gillray). Prijs: € 985,- (incl. 21% BTW).

Carte Générale de la Terre Napoléon

Paris: Gravé par Tardieu, 1808. Engraved chart measuring 580 x 850 mm. (sheet size), blank margins slightly rubbed with a few a few closed tears (now expertly repaired, engraving unaffected); otherwise fine overall. Impressive early chart of the South Australian coastline revealing French colonial ambitions for Australia, a result of the survey undertaken during the Baudin expedition in Australian waters during 1802.As the title "Terre Napoleon" strongly implies, the map is tangible proof of French colonial ambitions for Australia. At the time of the Baudin voyage a Napoleonic order existed to conquer the continent, a plan ultimately frustrated by defeat in Europe. The place names engraved on this chart maps are almost entirely in French; interestingly, when the second edition of Baudin's voyage was published in 1824 most of these names were discretely changed into English.Although the map bears the engraved date of 1808 it was included in the atlas volume of the official voyage account published in 1812. A milestone in mapping the continent, this was the first Australian atlas ever published. Although Matthew Flinders charted this coastline at the same time as Baudin, and the two expeditions famously met in Encounter Bay, Flinders' publication was delayed by several years due to his imprisonment at the hands of the French on Mauritius. The matter of precedence remained a bone of contention between the English and the French for some time as here there is no acknowledgement of Flinders' prior discoveries. This map is beautifully enhanced by vignettes of Australian flora and fauna based on drawings by Charles Alexandre Lesueur (featuring kangaroos and sea lions reclining composed beneath an idealised neoclassical figure). Most examples are removed from the atlas and are subsequently folded, however this example is a single unfolded sheet and remains in excellent condition.

A Collection of Designs for Rural Retreats, as Villas. Principally in the Gothic and Castle styles of Architecture

London: printed by V. Griffiths, published by J. & T. Carpenter and others, 1808. Quarto. (13 x 10 5/8 inches). Aquatint additional title, 24 aquatint plates and plans, each printed in a single colour: black, dark brown, bistre or blue. Contemporary tree calf gilt, covers with border of single gilt roll, the flat spine divided into six compartments by horizontal fillets, black morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with decorative repeat tooling in gilt with pointillé work (joints rubbed) A beautifully illustrated work, mostly in the neo-Gothic style, from one of the great architectural draughtsmen of the late-18th century. This valuable work begins with an essay by Malton 'Reflections on the necessity and advantage of temporary retirement' - 'The wise, the virtuously independent, who prefer the pure and tranquil retirement of the country, to the foetid joys of the tumultuous city, are they who take the most likely means to enjoy that blessing of life, happiness' (p.ii). This is followed by an introduction in which he recommends the smaller house or 'villa' as against a single very large mansion. 'Many families have been either ruined, or greatly hurt by a madness for building magnificent houses, in town or country, which have too often proved the tombs of the most substantial riches, and have soon passed into the hands of strangers' (p.9). The final section gives explanations of the fine plates, beginning with a definition of the 'rural retreat' or villa: 'A Villa, may be defined, the country retreat of a nobleman or gentleman. Its character is elegance, and its situation should be retired. A Villa should not be of great extent ... It should be capable of accommodating a few chosen friends with ease and comfort; wherefore it should possess every requisite convenience for domestic felicity. Its contour should be uniform, and distinguished by unadorned beauty of form, or by just distribution of chaste ornament' (p.15). James Malton, was the son of Thomas Malton (1726-1801) and the younger brother of Thomas Malton Jr. (1748-1804). The whole family worked as architectural draughtsmen, but also specialised in different but related areas: Malton senior was noted for his work on the theory of perspective and pure geometry, Thomas Malton Jr. became well-known as a teacher (J.M.W. Turner wrote 'My real master was Tom Malton) and for his highly accurate drawings of London, whilst James was evidently keen to secure work as a practising architect: 'Mr. Malton would furnish an estimate of the cost that would be incurred in Building not only any design of this collection, but any other design of his he might make; and would enter into contract for the just execution thereof ' ('advertisement' page following the title) Abbey Life 35; Archer 196:1; Prideaux p.343; RIBA, III, 2015.

The proceedings of a General Court Martial, held at Chelsea Hospital, on Thursday, January 28, 1808, and continued, by adjournment, till Tuesday, March 15, for the trial of Lieut. Gen. Whitelocke, late Commander-in-Chief of the forces in South America. Taken in Short-hand by Mr. Gurney. With the defence, copied from the original, by permission of General Whitelocke; also all the documents produced on the trial. Vol.I. [ - Vol.II].

London: printed for J.C. Mottley, Portsmouth; published by Longman (&c.). 1808. Two vols., 8vo., two folding engraved maps, (8) + 438 + xxxix + (1) and (8) + 439-830pp., contemporary half calf over marbled boards, skilfully rebacked and labelled. A very good copy. First edition. General Whitelocke's court-martial was the inevitable consequence of his enormous and disastrous ill-judged, and ill-directed, campaign against Spanish forces in Buenos Aires and the Plate region of South America in May - July 1807. 'Whitelocke returned to England on 7 November 1807, and in January 1808 he was court-martialled at Chelsea. ..... The court martial took seven weeks, and Whitelocke faced four charges covering poor diplomacy, military incompetence, and negotiation of a shameful surrender, each barely relevant to what had happened. He was found guilty and was cashiered. His fault lay in taking on a task beyond his capacity, for which those who appointed him should have shared the blame'. [John D. Grainger in ODNB].

März 1744 in Gröst in Thüringen geb.
