        6 partly autogr. letters signed.

Eden and Constantinople , 1850s/60s.. (Large) 4to. Altogether 7¾ pp. on 4 bifolia. 2 letters in Arabic language (one of which with French transcription).. Six Italian, French, and Arabic letters to the Prelate in Austro-Hungary, Monseigneur Mislin (1807-1878), signed in French or Arabic. Apparently, the Prelate took a lively interest in the fate of the Christians (the Maronites). [ ]" (23. IV. 1854).

Jh. mit goldgepräg. RTitel und reicher RVergoldung sowie farb. marmor. Schnitt.. Great Flower Books, S. 93 ("jewel-like prints", mit Abb.). - Dunthorne Nr. 101, S. 141f ("One of the finest and rarest books on fruit", mit Abb.). - Nissen BBI 551. - Brunet, II 871. - Ohne Titelblatt gebunden, es fehlten 2 Farbstiche (Nr. 52: "Epine-Vinette a fruit Blanc" u. 115: "Bon-Chretien panache"). Vier Plattennummern doppelt vergeben (27, 88, 92 u. 109, ergibt zus. 8 Farbstiche). Die Farbstiche zeigen in brillantestem Kolorit u.a. "Pierre Turpin's watercolor was etched in stripple by Bouquet, and printed in five colors a la poupee at the press of Langlois" [and] "retouched by hand" (siehe Great Flower Books). Adreß-Buch 1879). - Sehr gut erhaltene, breitrandige Folge mit den ersten 126 Farbkupfern, die im "Great Flower Books" als "jewel-like prints" bezeichnet werden, eingebunden im prächtigen Halbledereinband des 19. Jh. - ENGLISH TRANSLATION: Great Flower Books., p. 93 ("jewel-like prints" with a reprint). - Dunthorne Nr. 101, p. 141f ("one of the finest and rarest books on fruit", with a reprint). - Nissen BB1 551. - Brunet, II 871. - It has the instalments of Vol. 1 and the majority of the instalments of Vol. 2 (from 6 vols.) with the preface, the description and the coloured copperplate engravings, all on the plate numbering 1 to 124; the complete work encompasses 422 plates. - Bound without the title page, two copper prints are missing (No. 52: "Epine-Vinette a fruit Blanc" and No. 115: "Bon-Chretien panache"). Four plate numbers have twice been allocated (27, 88, 92 and 109, together eight colour plates). - This is one of the most magnificent works as well as one of the most splendid and rarest books on the different kinds of fruit. The "Traite" is not just a new edition by Duhamel du Monceau's work during the year 1768; on the contrary, it was to be published as a completely independent work from 1807 onwards in 72 instalments until 1835. This book followed the style of the great botanical French works of the late eighteenth century and is perhaps the greatest book ever written about fruit. The colour-printed copper prints reveal in the most brilliant colour design inter alia apples, pears, almonds, nectarines, peaches, cherries, plums, grapes, raspberries and strawberries, produced by the famous colour printer, Langlois, based on water colours by Antoine Poiteau and Pierre-Jean-Francois Turpin. Poiteau and Turpin were outstanding artists whose work followed the style of Pierre-Joseph Redoute, and Poiteau was a student of Redoute. "Pierre Turpin's water colour was etched in stripple by Bouquet, printed in five colours a la poupee at the press owned by Langlois" and then "retouched by hand" (consult Great Flower Books). - Our plate No. 104 "Apricot-Pechet" displays the hand-painting of the fruit in greater detail when compared to the same colour plate now available und reprinted in "Great Flower Books". - In 1846, the plates were printed again, this time in the "Pomologie francaise", where they were arranged differently and the name Turpin on the plates which he had designed removed (consult Nissen), with only Poiteau's name as the author appearing. - The beautiful gold-embossed half-leather single volume is the work of the bookbinder, "Louis [Paul August] Meincke in Lübeck" (there is an embossed hallmark on the rear endpaper), whose workshop was 712, Weber Street during the second half of the nineteenth century (according to the Lübeck Address Book of 1879). - This is a very well preserved edition with wide margins: the first 126 colour-printed copper prints are described as "jewel-like prints" in the "Great Flower Books" and the book is beautifully bound in the splendid half-leather of the nineteenth century. - We accept all main credit cards. - Wir akzeptieren Kreditkarten. - *** 82 Jahre Antiquariat Arno Adler (1932-2014) ***

- First edition. - Francois Peron (1775-1810) and Louis Freycinet (1779-1842) acted as scientific assistants on the perennial discovery voyage organised by Nicolas Baudin. Originally planned by the very aged Louis Antoine de Bougainville for the Musee d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, the voyage was undertaken 5 years later under the direction of Baudin. At the beginning, Alexander von Humboldt and Aime Bonpland wanted to participate in this expedition but disclaimed to do so for financial reasons. Besides cartographic and scientific research, the French government was interested in discovering unknown regions of this new continent and to claim it for itself. The ships reached Timor through Mauritius and followed the south-west coast of Australia in direction of Tasmania. They reached Sidney in November 1802 and arrived in Timor in June 1803 after having circumnavigated Australia. The present scientific report, which was written by Peron after the death of the zoologist Rene Mauge in 1802 in Tasmania, depicts only a small part of the more than 100000 documented species of the Australian fauna . The work also describes, as one of the oldest sources, the life of the Australian Aborigines. Peron died of tuberculosis in 1810 while working on the second volume of this scientific text, which was then was completed by Louis Freycinet, who was responsible of the French Hydrographic office. Peron nor Freycinet mention the name of the leader of the expedition Nicolas Baudin. The map drawn by Freycinet is considered as one of the first exact ones of the Australian continent. The plates with views of Timor, Sidney (2) and Tasmania belong, together with the ethnological, zoological and botanical plates, to the most important iconographic descriptions of Australia. With the beautiful frontispiece portrait of Peron, made shortly before his death. Both large folded maps are consolidated with paper, but with 2 crease fold marks. Paper sporadically lightly foxed and browned. Binding of volume 2 with dent on the front cover. - Nice copy with wide margins.

Paris: Deterville, 1807. First edition, and the prettiest set I have seen, of the earliest treatise on chemical technology based on the new principles of chemistry. Partington describes this work as "one of the best treatises on technical chemistry of its time, and the preface contains some economic and political considerations which are still true" (Vol. III, 557). There are important sections on dyeing, pottery, glass making, tanning, soap making, gunpowder, and distillation. The plates depict chemical apparatus and processes. A very pretty set, seemingly printed on thick paper. Zezzio was binder to Marie-Adélaïde de Bourbon. ❧ Cole 252. D.S.B., III, pp. 198-203. Duveen, p. 130. Neville, I, p. 260-"containing a detailed account of contemporary commercial developments.         Plan du Port de Veracruz

1807 - This map is an early nautical rendering of the harbor of Veracruz, Mexico, oriented with north to the upper left. It focuses on shoreline geography and depths, particularly around the various islands and sand bars off the coast. In the upper left corner of the map is a profile view of the region's mountains. Below is a French description of the harbor attributed to Humboldt. Below the map is the title and a note addressing the map to Bernardo de Orta, a captain in the Spanish Navy. The map is in very good condition with deluxe margins. Some foxing and discoloration, particularly in the lower margin. Small tear to lower margin not affecting the image. Baron Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a Prussian geographer and explorer who traveled extensively in Latin America. His maps of New Spain corroborated existing maps, documents, and reports with astronomical observations and today, exemplify state-of-the-art cartographic knowledge in the early 19th century. This map is a fine example of his work. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 10 x 11". Sheet measures 15.5 x 18.75".

Overall, this is a very. good, sound set in a very attractive binding. A scarce novel that. last appeared at public auction in 1979. (#40188). First edition. The author's first book. "From his beginnings as a Gothic novelist, Maturin was addicted to ultra-complicated plots whose dramatic commotion rivals the tangled tragedies of blood of the Elizabethan playwrights, and Jacobean melodramatists - Marlowe, Tourneur, Webster, and Chapman. The infinitely elaborate trappings of the Elizabethan revenge play seem to serve Maturin as a model for Montorio... To supplement the revenge plot, there is also plenty of monastic and inquisitional atrocity and a shrill style of poetic horror that will later become central in Melmoth the Wanderer." - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 1-242.         Antiquities of Westminster; The Old Palace; St Stephen's Chapel, (Now the House Of Commons) &c. &c.

London 1807 - "containing two hundred and forty-six engravings of topographical objects, of which one hundred and twenty-two no longer remain. This work contains copies of manuscripts which throw new and unexpected lights on the ancient history of the arts in England." This copy has tipped in to the front free end paper a note from (presumably) the original owner noting that the unumbered copies of this first edition, which were to be sold at six guineas, had been completely destroyed in a fire which happened at the premises of Mr Bradley in Fleet Street- "the coloured plates all lost, the six years hard labour of Mr and Mrs Smith. The copper plates were saved. But it must be some years before another edition can be published.". A pencil note in the top margin of the 'stone plate' says "this is an engraving on stone by Mr Smith, which he showed me about six months ago in Newman Street." The copper plate version of this follows the lithograph. Binding quarter leather, marbled paper over boards. The plates present match the list of plates at the end. Fourteen of the plates have been coloured (two in monochrome). Condition: Boards rubbed, worn but sound. Some age discolouration here and there inside and grubbiness especially to verso of the plates, but overall a tight, sound, clean copy. Contents: half title, title, dedication, advertisement (two pages, comprising a rehearsal by John Smith of his argument with Mr Hawkins, who had been the intended author of the accompanying text), Preface [i-xv], then 1-272 the text and plates, then list of plates, then list of subscribers (pages 273 227).         Buffon's Natural History. Containing a Theory of the Earth, a General History of the Earth, a General History of Man, of the Brute Creation and of Vegetables, Minerals, &c. &c

London: H. D. Symonds, 1807. Hardcover. Very good. Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views and work influenced the next two generations of naturalists during a critical period in the development of human knowledge and conception of the natural world. Charles Darwin, in a forward to his Origin of Species, stated that "the first author who in modern times has treated it in a scientific spirit was Buffon." It should be remarked that, like many sages before and after him, Buffon was not universally prescient. He argued that the Americas were lacking in large and powerful creatures, and that even the people were less virile than their European counterparts. An affronted Thomas Jefferson arranged to have the carcass of a bull moose sent to Paris for Buffon as proof of the virility of New World quadrupeds (and bipeds as well). Here is a 10 volume matched set of Buffon's ambitiously comprehensive discourse on natural science, with varying publication dates (4 vols published in 1807, 2 published in 1810, 2 published in 1811, and 2 published in 1812). All are bound in the original half leather over marbled boards with leather corners. The set is in very good condition overall considering the age and original bindings. The bindings all show shelf wear, but all of the boards remain firmly attached with square and tight bindings. All of the contents are clean, tight, and complete, including the many hand-colored plates.

Most significant scientific renderings of this British polymath presented in lectures, delivered at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, on mechanics, hydrodynamics, physics, mathematical elements of natural philosophy, and an extensive catalog of works relating to natural philosophy and the mechanical arts. This important publication includes his noted undulatory theory of light and the description of the experimental demonstration of interference. It is illustrated with 58 extraordinary copperplates of drawings, two of them superbly hand-colored, in-text diagrams and drawings as well as two maps. The bibliography in volume two was omitted from the second edition and never reprinted. Binding with moderate wear along edges with corners heavily rubbed.         Travels in Scotland, by an unusual route; with a trip to the Orkneys and Hebrides. Containing hints for improvements in agriculture and commerce. With characters and anecdotes. Embellished with views of striking objects, and a map including the Caledonian Canal

London, St Paul's Church Yard: J Johnson, 1807 Complete copy of this extremely scarce work with 29 engravings and a folding map of Scotland. 2 volumes bound in one in contemporary half leather binding with raised bands, gilt compartments, title label, marbled boards, marbled endpapers, and marbled page edges. Original bookmark present. With title page and frontispiece to Vol I - 323pp; and separate title page and frontispiece to Vol II - pp 324 -622 (although page numbers 619-622 have been repeated in error - so in reality the book should show 626 as the final page), plus index, errata table and directions for the plates. The binding is in very good condition - with bright gilt on the spine and little wear to joints. There is some rubbing to corners and a little scuffing. Internally there is some browning to pages and some plates (which are not tissue guarded) but the copy is generally very clean and sound. There is an interesting note added in ink (hopefully by the book owner) at the page edge of p507 - reflecting that the harsh winter of 1814 had forced rabbits and hares to dig into the snow and eat the bark of trees in his garden at Edmonton and remove soil from around the roots. He feared that his trees would die. The signature is hard to make out but looks like Rob King.
