A short account of the Imperial Family of BONAPARTE.

1805 - Manuscript essay in ink neatly written on 2½ pages; signed at end ‘Aug[us]t 15th 1805, sent in the form of a letter to Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), British naturalist, President of the Royal Society; folding marks, stamp and remains of seal; tears in right margin not affecting text. A biased summary of Napoleon’s family history and of his career. His descent is attributed to a butcher, called Buona, allegedly ennobled by King Theodore of Corsica for lending him a sum of money, who later changed his name to Buonaparte to be accepted as a relative by the ancient Florentine family of that name. Napoleon’s paternity is attributed to Count de Marboeuf, his mother’s lover, who paid for his education. Among other malicious rumours, Napoleon is accused of inventing the 1804 conspiracies against his life to justify the executions of the Duc d’Enghien and Pichegru. A contemporary note (by the recipient ?) identifies the author as ‘Abbé Man’, observing that Napoleon’s sisters Marie Pauline and Elisa were ‘exercising the professions of courtesans during this time. Marie exposed her body naked to Canova the Italian sculptor to make a statue on marble from her person preserved in the Borghese Palace’. Sir Joseph Banks is known to have sent roses to the Empress Josephine for her garden. (Offered with: )Baciocchi, Felice Pasquale (1762-1841), titular Prince of Piombino & Lucca, Corsican husband of Elisa Maria Bonaparte (1777-1820), Napoleon’s artistic younger sister; created Imperial Prince in 1805. Autograph letter in French to his brother-in-law A Ramolino (1) in Ajaccio, signed ‘Votre affectionné beaufrère et ami, F Baciocchi’. 1½ pages, Bologna, 9th April 1826; remains of seal; folding marks with some tears; one margin strengthened. Affectionate letter thanking for letter and news with apologies for lapse in correspondence due to an accident, and pained to hear about his sister’s illness. On Napoleon’s fall, Elisa and Felice Baciocchi left Lucca for Trieste; Felice Baciocchi spent his final years in Bologna after the sudden death of his wife. (1) Napoleon’s mother, Letizia, was a member of the Corsican noble Ramolino family.

Seven fine folding engraved plates. xiv, [2], 115, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. marbled half-sheep & marbled boards (minor foxing), flat spine gilt. Munich: J. Lindauer, 1805.First edition and quite rare. Baader (1763-1835), a famous civil engineer, mining expert, and Chief of the Bavarian Mining Council, resided in England and Scotland from 1786 to 1794, where he studied the most recent technological developments, both in mining and metallurgy. While in Edinburgh, he designed an improved hydraulic powered blowing engine for blast furnaces that allowed higher temperatures, based on the fan originally developed by John Wilkinson (1728-1808). This became known as the Baadersches Geblaese. His greatest contribution to science was, however, his devotion, through propaganda and the power of his position, to the building of railways in Bavaria. The present work is concerned with Baader's final work on the fan and the improvements he has made to it.Fine copy with a small ownership inscription on title inoffensively blacked-out.

Paris: L. E. Herhan for Delachaussie et Garnery, 1805. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Folio (506 x 332 mm). Half-title. Title with stipple-engraved vignette, 65 stipple-engraved plates by Bouquet, Jacques Chailly, Mlle. Delelo and others, after Redouté, printed in colors by Langlois. Contemporary marbled calf gilt, spine with red and tan morocco lettering-pieces gilt. Some light wear at extremities; some mostly marginal and pale spotting. Provenance: Starrenstein (bookplate); purchased from Biblion, 1969. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, FIRST STATE, before the plates were titled and with plate 54 misnumbered 62. The plates are of flowers, fruits, bulbs, leaves, etc. of flowering plants and trees, some showing whole plants and others showing details, sometimes cut to reveal anatomical details. The book was issued in 1805 in both folio and quarto format. It is not surprising that this folio edition best reflects Redouté's superb botanical art. John Ruskin was one of many admirers of the work, and in 1878 wrote to his bookseller, F. S. Ellis: "Please at once set your Paris agents to look out for all copies that come up, at any sale, of Rousseau's Botanique with coloured plates, 1805 - and buy all they can get." Rousseau's letters on botany were written from 1771 to 1773, but were not published in his lifetime. They first appeared in his Oeuvres in 1782. Exiled amongst the natural beauties of Switzerland in 1763 or 1764, Rousseau developed his interest in botany, and made various collections of plant specimens or herbaria. See Lawrence Redouteana 15.         THOMAS PAINE TO THE CITIZENS OF PENNSYLVANIA, ON THE PROPOSAL FOR CALLING A CONVENTION

Philadelphia: Wm. Duane, 1805. 30pp. 12mo. Half calf amd marbled boards, leather label. Dampstaining along lower margin, not affecting text. Very good, Thomas Paine's last published work, his thoughts on the proposed convention to form a new state constitution in Pennsylvania. The first state constitution, of 1776, was among the most democratic of state constitutions. It was replaced in 1790 by a conservative constitution drawn up by the ascendant Federalists. The 1805 movement was a Jeffersonian reaction. In this pamphlet Paine makes an argument attempting to prove the unconstitutionality of the power assumed by the New York legislature to grant charters. Paine was by this time a resident of New Rochelle, New York, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Paine writes: "As I resided in the capital of your state (Philadelphia) in the 'time that tried men's souls,' and all my political writings, during the revolutionary war, were written in that city, it seems natural for me to look back on the place of my political and literary birth, and feel an interest for its happiness." In March, 1804, the Louisiana Purchase was divided into the Territories of Orleans (south of the present border of Arkansas and Missouri) and Louisiana (everything to the north and west, governed until 1807 by Indiana Territory). The influence of French and Spanish laws in North America is evident in these early territorial laws, as it took Congress more than two decades to determine their intent with regard to existing Spanish and French law.

A dictionary of the English language: in which the words are deduced from their originals ... abstracted from the folio edition by the author ... to which are prefixed a grammar of the English language, and the preface to the folio edition

Philadelphia: Jacob Johnson & Co, 1805. First American edition of Johnson's dictionary, here printed in abridged form, and based on the London octavos; thick 8vo, pp. xl, [2], unpaginated lexicon in double column; full contemporary calf, red morocco label on spine; spine vertically creased causing looseness to one or two internal leaves, otherwise very good and sound. Contains the first appearance in the western hemisphere of Johnson's famous Preface and Grammar. The entries have been abbreviated, but bear considerable resemblance to the originals, and there are also brief etymologies; sources are cited, but citations are not. The first complete American edition did not appear until the 2 volume quarto edition of Philadelphia, 1818. Miniature editions appeared in Boston and Philadelphia in 1804 under Johnson's name, but the definitions bear no resemblance whatsoever to the originals. See Alston V, p. 37-9: "These [miniature editions] though having Johnson's name on the title page, really have nothing whatever to do with the full text … but they have been entered here since they are generally catalogued under Johnson's name."

Paris: L. E. Herhan for Delachaussie et Garnery, 1805. Leipzig: Breitkopf und Härtel [without PN], 1805. First Edition. Eitner VII, p. 279. Grove Music Online. OCLC no. 21813652. I fuorusciti di Firenze, an opera semiseria to a libretto by Angelo Anelli, was first performed at the Hoftheater in Dresden on November 27, 1802. "[Paer's] opere semiserie... are essentially serious operas with happy endings. For example, Camilla, I fuorusciti and Leonora are 'rescue operas' after the model of Cherubini, set in the lonely, ominous settings of Gothic romances - ruined castles, threatening forests and dank underground vaults... Yet the tension of these situations is relieved regularly by the intrusion of cowardly servants and pairs of rustic lovers, who provide comic relief and express nostalgic or folklike sentiments... [Paer] was one of the central figures in the development of opera semiseria during the first decade of the 19th century." Scott L. Balthazar and Julian Budden in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. First edition, inscribed by the author. This is the first substantial monograph on Ohio, with Rufus Putnam's large map of the young state. Putnam, to whom this book is dedicated, was Surveyor General, a founding father of the state of Ohio and probably responsible for another map, showing the land suitable for military service, including the Indian Moravian towns of Shoenbrun, Gnadenhutten and Salem. The birds-eye-view depicts the structures erected by the Native North Americans on the river Muskingum. The author Thaddeus Mason Harris (1768-1842) was the son of a Massachusetts revolutionary, who died during the War of Independence. After an impoverished childhood he managed to study theology and became a Unitarian clergyman and Harvard librarian.       Offered is a wonderful example of a stampless letter carried by private ship into Marblehead, Massachusetts. The letter was placed in the mail, and received a manuscript MHead postmark, and was rated Sh 19, for the 17ct rate to East Haddam Ct, plus the 2ct ship fee for the captain. The captain writes to merchants at East Haddam Ct regarding his time at sea.Halifax November 17, 1805 has been crossed out and At Sea written in it's place. He writes that " I was boarded by the Cambrian Frigate and ordered on board with my papers. After they were examined the captain told me he should detain me and send me to Halifax. My mate and all my men, except the cook was taken out. A prize master mate and seven men put on board and made sail for this place" This letter is an example of events which lead up to the Embargo of 1807, and the War of 1812HMS Cambrian was a Royal Navy 40 gun fifth rate frigate. She served in the English channel, and off North America.

Seven fine folding engraved plates. xiv, [2], 115, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. marbled half-sheep & marbled boards (minor foxing), flat spine gilt. Munich: J. Lindauer, 1805. First edition and quite rare. The present work is concerned with Baader's final work on the fan and the improvements he has made to it. Fine copy with a small ownership inscription on title inoffensively blacked-out. WorldCat locates no copy in North America. ❧ A.D.B., I, pp. 725-26. Poggendorff, I, 80-81.
