        Carta dell'Istria ristampata nel 1805

Incisione in rame, colore d'epoca, mm 650x460. Lago-Rossit, Descriptio Histriae, pag, 253.

Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked preserving the original spines, spines lettered and decorated with floriate motifs in gilt and black, raised bands ruled in gilt, boards double-ruled in gilt with broad floriate black roll-tool borders, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled black. Half-titles to volumes 2 and 3. Bookplates removed from front pastedowns, later bookplate of John Turnbull to front pastedown of volume 3, "cancelled" stamps to volume 1 verso of title page and final pages of each volume. Extremities lightly rubbed, tips a little bruised, boards marked with silver (wax?) brush marks, hinges cracked but firm, front endpapers scuffed and stripped presumably from removal of bookplates, contents lightly spotted, more noticeably in volume 3, with a few ink marks; overall a very good set. First Playfair edition of "the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). William Playfair (1759–1823), a writer on political economy best known as the inventor of three fundamental forms of statistical graph (the time-series line graph and the bar and pie charts), paired his edition with sharp criticism of Smith's ideas together with supplementary material to bring the work up to date. The Wealth of Nations was first published in 1776.

Twelve views of places in the kingdom of Mysore, the country of Tippoo Sultan. From drawings taken on the spot. To which are annexed, concise descriptions of the places drawn, with a brief detail of part of the operations of the army under the Marquis of Cornwallis during the late war, and a few other particulars.

London Edward Orme 1805 - Landscape folio (49 x 65.5 cm), title, dedication and 6 sheets of letterpress text, 12 original hand-coloured aquatint plates by J.W. Edy after Colebrooke, within grey wash frames, original wrappers with paper label to upper cover, the whole bound into later half calf, well preserved in modern cloth box, light soiling to title, an excellent copy with fine colour. Fine early views of Mysore. Colebrook (1762-1808), served as a surveyor with the Bengal Infantry from 1778 until his death. While surveying the routes taken during the marches of the army under Lord Cornwallis in 1791 and 1792, he made drawings of Seringapatam, Bangalore, and the local countryside including the hill forts of Mysore. The original publication of the views was announced in 1792 in the Calcutta Gazette. They were published in London in 1794, having been engraved in aquatint by John William Edy, a Dane working in London, under the superintendence of Paul Sandby. Beside views of Seringapatem and Bangalore, the set is notable for the plate of the mausoleum of Haidar Ali (who died in1782). This set of views, amongst the earliest to show places directly associated with Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan, became very popular and were republished several times. Abbey Travel 419; Archer p30.         La Perruche à nuque et joues rouges. Plate 72. T.2.

Paris 1805 - Original stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, with strong colour, trimmed to just outside plate-mark, small tear to left side, otherwise a fine copy with clean, strong colours. Dimensions: 347 by 260mm (13.5 by 10 inches). From Levaillant's "Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets", which is considered the most comprehensive and complete catalogue on the subject. This magnificent work includes some of the most lively and colorful bird illustrations ever created. They capture not only the defining characteristics of the species, but also the charming personality of the individual bird. This exquisite monograph was written by Francois Levaillant, an adventurer and natural historian, who was one of the first to record sightings of Australian parrots. Barrband's skill was greatly esteemed and his name lent cachet to the sumptious work authored by Levaillant. Barraband's brilliantly colored engravings of exotic birds coupled with Levaillant's precise descriptions represent the height of realistic bird art. Jacques Barraband achieved great artistic notoriety for his work at the Gobelin tapestry works, the Sevres porcelain factory, and the palace of St. Cloud before coming to work for the French naturalist Francois Levaillant in the early years of the nineteenth century. Barraband collaborated with Louis Bouquet and Langlois to create the engravings for this work. The plates were carefully inked "a la poupee" with brilliant colors and pulled from the press. Nuances were then added by hand. In his work, Barraband often shows his subject in profile perched on a short tree branch. No other artist equalled his mastery in the rendering of feathers, in evoking their fragility, stiffness or incredible lightness. He displays a preference for harmonies of blues and greens, and reds and yellows. The evocative power of these realistic and precise bird renderings, that feature all the colors of the rainbow, is striking.

Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits: a Set of Floral Designs.

Paris 1805 - Original stipple engravings by Charles-Louis Ruotte, Charles Louis) printed in colour and finished by hand. Framed and glazed, overall size: 63.3 by 47.2cm. Prevost came from a long line of French artists spanning 400 years. Jean-Louis himself first exhibited at the Salon when only fourteen years of age, showing paintings of bouquets, a vase of flowers and other small botanical studies. Immediately he was commissioned by Monsieur Roussel to paint the flowers in the wealthy landowner's garden. The result was a 12-volume work of gouache studies, entitled "Hortus Cellensis", and was at once acquired by the Paris Natural History Library. Soon after he began work on his great printed work, the "Collection des Fleurs et Fruits", a series of 48 stipple engraved plates depicting bouquets and baskets of fruit. The work was engraved by the brilliant and versatile artist Charles Louis Ruotte, who had learned the new practice of coloured engraving under Bartolozzi in London. The work is known as one of the most magnificent and beautiful publications in the world of botanical art, and was used as a manual for designers of chintzes and toiles. Above all, he was a master of composition who could unerringly blend the finest hot-house specimen with the simplest bloom of field or hedgerow to produce beautiful images.

        Suvorov's March across the Alps.

John Vendramini London Jan 1 1805 - Aquatint (59.5 x 79 cm) by John Vendramini after a painting by Robert Kerr Porter, with contemporary hand colouring; some marginal restoration, browning. In lower margin captioned in English & French: "To His Most Excellent Majesty the Emperor of all the Russians / These plates representing the passage of the Alps by Russian troops led / by General Suwarrow on the 28 of Oct. 1799, are most humbly dedicated by his / Imperial Majesty's most dutiful Servant John Vendramini". Fine large aquatint depicting heroic crossing of the Alps by the Russian troops in the War of the Second Coalition. This is the first in a pair of coloured aquatints by Giovanni Vendramini (1769-1839) after Robert Porter (1777-1842), and depicts the standing figure of Suvorov, sword aloft, in the foreground attended by a kneeling priest and group of officers, with the Russian infantry engaging French soldiers on a bridge and mountain pass in the background; the engraved dedication & description below the image contains a vignette head & shoulders portrait of Alexander I in uniform. In 1799 Paul I granted Suvorov command of the Austro-Russian army and sent him to drive Napoleon's forces out of Italy. Suvorov erased practically all of Bonaparte's gains of 1796 and 1797, defeating his top generals Moreau (at Cassano d'Adda), MacDonald (at Trebbia) and Joubert (at Novi). After the victorious Italian theatre Suvorov planned to march on Paris, but instead was ordered to Switzerland to join up with the Russian forces already there and drive the French out. The Russian army under General Korsakov was defeated by Masséna at Zürich before Suvorov could reach and unite with them. Surrounded by Masséna's 80,000 French troops, Suvorov with a force of 18,000 Russian regulars and 5,000 Cossacks, exhausted and short of provisions, decided that to evade the French forces awaiting him he would march into the 9,000 foot high mountains of the Panikh range towards Ilants. After a difficult march, the Russian army reached Ilants on October 8, finally beyond the reach of the French. Suvorov's successful escape still cost him as much as one third of his army and all of his guns, but gained him the grudging admiration of Europe, the nickname "the Russian Hannibal" and the title of the fourth Generalissimo of Russia.         A short account of the Imperial Family of BONAPARTE.

1805 - Manuscript essay in ink neatly written on 2½ pages; signed at end ‘Aug[us]t 15th 1805, sent in the form of a letter to Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), British naturalist, President of the Royal Society; folding marks, stamp and remains of seal; tears in right margin not affecting text. A biased summary of Napoleon’s family history and of his career. His descent is attributed to a butcher, called Buona, allegedly ennobled by King Theodore of Corsica for lending him a sum of money, who later changed his name to Buonaparte to be accepted as a relative by the ancient Florentine family of that name. Napoleon’s paternity is attributed to Count de Marboeuf, his mother’s lover, who paid for his education. Among other malicious rumours, Napoleon is accused of inventing the 1804 conspiracies against his life to justify the executions of the Duc d’Enghien and Pichegru. A contemporary note (by the recipient ?) identifies the author as ‘Abbé Man’, observing that Napoleon’s sisters Marie Pauline and Elisa were ‘exercising the professions of courtesans during this time. Marie exposed her body naked to Canova the Italian sculptor to make a statue on marble from her person preserved in the Borghese Palace’. Sir Joseph Banks is known to have sent roses to the Empress Josephine for her garden. (Offered with: )Baciocchi, Felice Pasquale (1762-1841), titular Prince of Piombino & Lucca, Corsican husband of Elisa Maria Bonaparte (1777-1820), Napoleon’s artistic younger sister; created Imperial Prince in 1805. Autograph letter in French to his brother-in-law A Ramolino (1) in Ajaccio, signed ‘Votre affectionné beaufrère et ami, F Baciocchi’. 1½ pages, Bologna, 9th April 1826; remains of seal; folding marks with some tears; one margin strengthened. Affectionate letter thanking for letter and news with apologies for lapse in correspondence due to an accident, and pained to hear about his sister’s illness. On Napoleon’s fall, Elisa and Felice Baciocchi left Lucca for Trieste; Felice Baciocchi spent his final years in Bologna after the sudden death of his wife. (1) Napoleon’s mother, Letizia, was a member of the Corsican noble Ramolino family.

      - Seven fine folding engraved plates. xiv, [2], 115, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. marbled half-sheep & marbled boards (minor foxing), flat spine gilt. Munich: J. Lindauer, 1805. First edition and quite rare. Baader (1763-1835), a famous civil engineer, mining expert, and Chief of the Bavarian Mining Council, resided in England and Scotland from 1786 to 1794, where he studied the most recent technological developments, both in mining and metallurgy. While in Edinburgh, he designed an improved hydraulic powered blowing engine for blast furnaces that allowed higher temperatures, based on the fan originally developed by John Wilkinson (1728-1808). This became known as the Baadersches Geblaese. His greatest contribution to science was, however, his devotion, through propaganda and the power of his position, to the building of railways in Bavaria. The present work is concerned with Baader's final work on the fan and the improvements he has made to it. Fine copy with a small ownership inscription on title inoffensively blacked-out. WorldCat locates no copy in North America. ? A.D.B., I, pp. 725-26. Poggendorff, I, 80-81. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Botanique ... ornée de soixante-cinq planches, imprimées en couleurs d'après les peintures de P. J. Redouté

Paris: L. E. Herhan for Delachaussie et Garnery, 1805. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Folio (506 x 332 mm). Half-title. Title with stipple-engraved vignette, 65 stipple-engraved plates by Bouquet, Jacques Chailly, Mlle. Delelo and others, after Redouté, printed in colors by Langlois. Contemporary marbled calf gilt, spine with red and tan morocco lettering-pieces gilt. Some light wear at extremities; some mostly marginal and pale spotting. Provenance: Starrenstein (bookplate); purchased from Biblion, 1969. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, FIRST STATE, before the plates were titled and with plate 54 misnumbered 62. The plates are of flowers, fruits, bulbs, leaves, etc. of flowering plants and trees, some showing whole plants and others showing details, sometimes cut to reveal anatomical details. The book was issued in 1805 in both folio and quarto format. It is not surprising that this folio edition best reflects Redouté's superb botanical art. John Ruskin was one of many admirers of the work, and in 1878 wrote to his bookseller, F. S. Ellis: "Please at once set your Paris agents to look out for all copies that come up, at any sale, of Rousseau's Botanique with coloured plates, 1805 - and buy all they can get." Rousseau's letters on botany were written from 1771 to 1773, but were not published in his lifetime. They first appeared in his Oeuvres in 1782. Exiled amongst the natural beauties of Switzerland in 1763 or 1764, Rousseau developed his interest in botany, and made various collections of plant specimens or herbaria. See Lawrence Redouteana 15. Clinton served three terms as Mayor (this was published during his first term, 1803-1807), as well as serving as the sixth Governor of the state (where he was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal), as U.S. Senator, and as a candidate for President in the closely contested election of 1812, when he nearly defeated James Madison.         THOMAS PAINE TO THE CITIZENS OF PENNSYLVANIA, ON THE PROPOSAL FOR CALLING A CONVENTION

Philadelphia: Wm. Duane, 1805. 30pp. 12mo. Half calf amd marbled boards, leather label. Dampstaining along lower margin, not affecting text. Very good, Thomas Paine's last published work, his thoughts on the proposed convention to form a new state constitution in Pennsylvania. The first state constitution, of 1776, was among the most democratic of state constitutions. It was replaced in 1790 by a conservative constitution drawn up by the ascendant Federalists. The 1805 movement was a Jeffersonian reaction. In this pamphlet Paine makes an argument attempting to prove the unconstitutionality of the power assumed by the New York legislature to grant charters. Paine was by this time a resident of New Rochelle, New York, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Paine writes: "As I resided in the capital of your state (Philadelphia) in the 'time that tried men's souls,' and all my political writings, during the revolutionary war, were written in that city, it seems natural for me to look back on the place of my political and literary birth, and feel an interest for its happiness." Rare, with only six copies reported in OCLC. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 9089. SABIN 58240. OCLC 19939222.

Acts Passed at the First Session of the Legislative Council of the Territory of Orleans, Begun and Held at the Principal, in the City of New-Orleans

Printed by James M. Bradford, New Orleans 1805 - (6 7/8 x 4 1/2 inches). xxxiv,461pp. Text in English and French on facing pages. Contemporary sheep, expertly rebacked to style retaining the original lettering pieces The first American laws in the west. A rare and important work, the first American laws printed west of the Mississippi. The first session laws for the Louisiana territory under American rule, with the text printed in English and French on facing pages. In March, 1804, the Louisiana Purchase was divided into the Territories of Orleans (south of the present border of Arkansas and Missouri) and Louisiana (everything to the north and west, governed until 1807 by Indiana Territory). The influence of French and Spanish laws in North America is evident in these early territorial laws, as it took Congress more than two decades to determine their intent with regard to existing Spanish and French law.

A dictionary of the English language: in which the words are deduced from their originals ... abstracted from the folio edition by the author ... to which are prefixed a grammar of the English language, and the preface to the folio edition

Philadelphia: Jacob Johnson & Co, 1805. First American edition of Johnson's dictionary, here printed in abridged form, and based on the London octavos; thick 8vo, pp. xl, [2], unpaginated lexicon in double column; full contemporary calf, red morocco label on spine; spine vertically creased causing looseness to one or two internal leaves, otherwise very good and sound. Contains the first appearance in the western hemisphere of Johnson's famous Preface and Grammar. The entries have been abbreviated, but bear considerable resemblance to the originals, and there are also brief etymologies; sources are cited, but citations are not. The first complete American edition did not appear until the 2 volume quarto edition of Philadelphia, 1818. Miniature editions appeared in Boston and Philadelphia in 1804 under Johnson's name, but the definitions bear no resemblance whatsoever to the originals. See Alston V, p. 37-9: "These [miniature editions] though having Johnson's name on the title page, really have nothing whatever to do with the full text … but they have been entered here since they are generally catalogued under Johnson's name."
