A journal of remarks and observations as kept by E. G. M. . ..[mostly on board the barque Sarah of London], April 1831-14 March 1833 (with additions to 1835). with an engraved view as frontispiece, 15 full-page, 1 nearly full-page and 1 smaller manuscript maps and coastal profiles, plus a small engraved view ("Tomb of Napoleon") mounted on 1 page. Including: MORSE, Edward George. Lecture Book [notes on anatomical lectures by Joseph Constantine Carpue].[London], November-December 1828. with a matching pair of engravings of a scull on and facing the title-page, and 27 pencil and/or ink anatomical drawings (including 2 full-page), some also with red. 4to (19.5×16.5 cm). Contemporary sheepskin parchment.

A manuscript ship's journal kept by Edward George Morse (Bromyard 1805?-Deal post 1850?), who no doubt served, among other functions, as the ship's surgeon. Morse made his earliest dated entries in April 1831 at the island Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and others at Madagascar and its surrounding islands from May to August 1831. Morse provides extensive notes on the natural history, topography and people of the Seychelles, Madagascar and the neighbouring islands, and provides detailed maps of many of the islands and coastal areas, along with a few coastal profiles. The two manuscripts are written in a single album of laid paper. Morse used it 1828 to take notes when he attended the London lectures on anatomy and blood circulation by the innovative surgeon Joseph Constantine Carpue, who had pioneered facial reconstructive surgery by introducing ancient Indian techniques. He was famous for illustrating his lectures with chalk drawings, which no doubt served as the models for the anatomical illustrations in Morse's notes. A few clippings and hand-written notes have been inserted.

Travels to the Westward of the Allegany Mountains, in the States of the Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and Return to Charlestown, through the Upper Carolinas.

London: For J. Mawman, 1805. - 8vo., (8 ¼ x 5 ½ inches). Fine folding engraved map of the United States (unevenly browned, offsetting to title page). Contemporary dark green calf, both covers gilt-ruled, the smooth spine in six gilt-ruled compartments, red morocco gilt lettering piece in one, gilt florets in the rest (rebacked, preserving much of the original spine). Provenance: Bookplate of Henry Shaw (1800-1889) to front pastedown. First edition in English, first published in Paris the previous year. Michaux's classic narrative of travels west of the Allegheny Mountains. Michaux is most famous as a botanist and author of the comprehensive "North American Sylva." The 1800-mile journey chronicled in this book began when his father Andrew Michaux embarked on the Baudin voyage to Australia in 1800. "Michaux began to seek an opportunity to continue his father's work in North America. With the support of Jean Chaptal, minister of the interior, he sailed for America and arrived at Charleston, South Carolina, on 9 October 1801. He had been instructed to close down the nursery [founded by his father] at Charleston for economic reasons, and he sent back to France those seedlings he thought worthy of cultivation. In the spring of 1802 Michaux toured the forests of New Jersey with David Hosack and also visited Hosack's newly established Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. From there he made an extended visit to Philadelphia, where he met William Bartram and saw William Hamilton's fine collection of trees at Woodlands. He then made a journey through Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Tennessee before returning to Carolina, and he met on the way many of his father's old acquaintances. He returned to France at the end of 1803 to organize the shipments of plants and seeds that he had sent back and to make a series of reports on his work. Clearly by then he had formed the idea of producing a major work on the trees of North America" (Ian MacPhail for ANB). Thomson, 822. Howes M-579. Clark II, 106. Sabin 48704. Graff 2780. The three plates that D'Hastrel lithographed himself are signed and numbered in the stone, 41-43. This series of lithographs is of great ethnological interest. In very good condition, with most plates slightly and 1 seriously foxed, some marginal water stains and 1 plate with a marginal abrasion, not affecting the images.

L'Homme des Champs, ou Les Georgiques Francoises Nouvelle Edition Augmentee, Avec Figures

Chez Levrault, Schoell et Cie. (L'Imprimerie de P. Didot L'Aine), Paris 1805 - 8vo. 225 pp. With four plates and eight vignette illustrations, two each at the beginning of each of the four "chants", all hand-colored sensitively. These are by Catel and engraved by Buchorn, Guttenberg, Halderwang et Mayer. Cohen-de Ricci 279. An updated adaptation of Virgil's masterpiece. The contemporary hand-coloring sets this copy apart from others of this work. The soft coloring -- in the spirit of Fragonard or Boucher -- perfectly suits the bucolic subject matter. Red morocco boards are particularly thick, rendering a box-like solidity to the book as an object, which is further enhanced with gilt work along edges. Light foxing throughout but generally not affecting significantly the plate and illustration pages, thus suggesting that it is very much a function of the acidity of the paper used for the text proper.

It also contains his masterly sketch of the History of Printing" & Bigmore & Wyman say: "Six copies printed on large paper, in quarto. The first volume is entirely occupied with an exhaustive examination of the evidence procurable at the time as to the invention of Printing, with a review of the books written upon the subject. There is also a chronological table of the art of typography as exercised in the fifteenth century, with the date of the earliest works from the presses of several cities, as well as the names of the printers."

Account of a Series of Experiments, shewing the Effects of Compression in modifying the Action of Heat. Read in the Royal Society of Edinburgh, June 3. 1805

Five engraved plates & tables in the text. 1 p.l., iii, 115 pp. Large 4to, modern calf-backed marbled boards (minor foxing, faintest dampstaining to outer margins in second half of book). [Edinburgh: 1805]. First separate printing, later published in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. "This important memoir, which made the author the founder of experimental geology, contains his classic experiments undertaken in support of the Huttonian Theory."-Sotheran, Vol. II, 8816. "Hall followed experimental methods; he selected different varieties of ancient basalt and lavas from Vesuvius and Etna, reduced them to a molten state, and allowed them to cool. At first he arrived only at negative results, as vitreous masses were produced; but he then retarded the process of cooling, and actually succeeded in obtaining solid, crystalline rock-material. By regulating the temperature and the time allowed for the cooling and consolidation, Hall could produce rocks varying from finely to coarsely crystalline structure. And he therefore proved that under certain conditions crystalline rock could, as Hutton had said, be produced by the cooling of molten rock-magma...These results were afterwards confirmed by other experimentalists. Thus Werner's theory that crystalline rock represented in all cases a precipitate from water was shown to be inadequate, and it was incontestably proved that crystalline rock might originate from molten rock when slowly cooled under pressure."-Zittel, pp. 73-74. Very good copy. ❧ Adams, The Birth and Development of the Geological Sciences, p. 239. D.S.B., VI, pp. 53-56. Geikie, The Founders of Geology, pp. 317-25. .

A Short Account of the Cause of the Disease in Corn , called by the Farmers the Blight, the Mildew, and the Rust [in] Practical Observations on the British Grasses

London: Printed for H.D. Symonds and Curtis, 1805. Octavo, six engraved plates in the first work, and one folding engraved plate by Bauer in the second work; some spotting and embrowning, but a good copy in contemporary half calf (restored). Banks on disease in corn. One of remarkably few works by Joseph Banks to have appeared in print. Despite his general pre-eminence in scientific and enlightenment London, and despite having been one of the most prolific correspondents known, Banks was remarkably shy of print and hardly anything was published over his name. He had a particular interest in agricultural crops. He became alerted to the increasing problem of blight in wheat and corn in 1804 and, in the face of a devastating drop in the harvest that year, worked with Franz Bauer (Ferdinand Bauer's elder brother) in examining and recording specimens in an attempt to discover the means by which the disease was transmitted. "Blight" or "rust" in wheat and corn was a problem for farmers both in England and abroad, including Australia: 'The climate of the British Isles is not the only one that is liable to the Blight in Corn… Specimens received from the Colony of New South Wales shew that considerable mischief was done to the wheat crop there in the year 1803 by a parasitic plant, very similar to the English one' (p. 19). Banks' treatise, which was 'intended to 'awake the energies of reason' among farmers and agriculturalists willing and able to study the day-to-day progress of their crops' (Carter, Sir Joseph Banks, p. 405), was issued in various forms, both separately and, as here, as a supplement to other works. Issued here with a separate title-page, it forms an adjunct to Curtis' Practical Observations on the British Grasses. This is the third edition of Curtis' work, but the first to include Banks' treatise. The folding plate comprises eight figures after original drawings by Bauer, which were among the first he had achieved with the aid of a microscope.

A Short Account of the Cause of the Disease in Corn

London: printed for J. Harding, 1805. Octavo, 32 pp. including the half-title, with a folding plate; some waterstaining in lower part of most pages, mostly marginal, otherwise a good copy with the half-title in "Mackaness" morocco, with the Mackaness bookplate. Sir Joseph Banks in print. One of remarkably few works published by Banks, but an apt demonstration of his wide range of scientific interest. The problems of blight in wheat and corn were a considerable problem for farmers both in England and abroad, including Australia: 'The climate of the British Isles is not the only one that is liable to the Blight in Corn… Specimens received from the Colony of New South Wales shew that considerable mischief was done to the wheat crop there in the year 1803 by a parasitic plant, very similar to the English one' (p.19). Banks wrote this as a supplement for the fourth edition of Curtis's Practical Observations on the British Grasses, 1805, where it appeared with a separate title-page; however that printing, which has a different imprint, ran to only 14 pp. Carter (Sir Joseph Banks… guide to biographical and bibliographical sources, p. 172) identifies a separate printing like ours, but it has a different publisher (Bulmer). Ferguson notes the Curtis edition (399a) but does not record any separate publication. The folding plate comprises eight figures, all based on original drawings by Francis Bauer, Ferdinand Bauer's elder brother.

        London [Westminster Bridge and Abbey]

William Daniell, London 1805 - A wonderful and very rare image 'splendidly drawn, quiet and restrained in.colouring, [which] stand[s] at the high-water mark of aquatint in England' (Hardie & Clayton) This view is taken looking over the terrace at the Adelphi on the north bank of the river, across the river to the south west to Westminster Bridge, the Abbey and the old Houses of Parliament. 'After the publication of the Oriental Scenery William Daniell had clearly made up his mind that he would not be associated solely with India, and that his prowess as a draughtsman and as engraver in aquatint could well be employed for plates dealing with home scenery. in 1804-5, he made a start with a magnificent set of six views of London which show him at his very best as artist and engraver. These large views splendidly drawn, quiet and restrained in their colouring, stand at the high-water mark of aquatint in England' (Hardie & Clayton) Cf. M.Hardie & M.Clayton 'Thomas Daniell. William Daniell' in Walker's Quarterly Nos.35-36 , 1932, p.30; cf. T.Sutton The Daniells (1954) p.113. Hand-coloured aquatint, drawn and engraved Daniell.         Niklaus von Flüe.
