Vienna SV Degen and Paris Hocquet 1820 1804 - de celle d'Emulation de Liege, et de celle pour l'Encouragement des Sciences et Arts de Hambourg. SECOND EDITION, revue et corrigee, 1820. French text, 8vo, approximately 190 x 125 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, woodcut title vignette, 4 woodcut illustrations printed on 3 pages, 1 large folding plate of the Minerve, plus at the end 1 EXTRA folding plate (probably a facsimile) of a fantasy flying machine which seems to come from an Italian work, pages: 36, (4), bound in modern half calf over cloth sides, raised bands and gilt decoration to spine, contrasting gilt lettered labels, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Corners and hinges very slightly rubbed, small blemish to upper hinge, front inner paper hinge cracked, 2 very small repairs to edge of front endpaper, slightly foxed throughout, mostly light, the folding plate is faintly foxed at the edges, there is a small light stain at the top outer corner, a tiny piece missing from the lower corner and a very short closed edge tear at the inner edge (repaired on reverse), the unnumbered illustrated pages at the end are very faintly foxed at the edges, otherwise a very good copy. Étienne-Gaspard Robert (1763-1837) was a famous Belgian stage magician pioneering projection techniques for phantasmagoria shows, at the same time pursuing an academic career as professor of physics at Liege, specialising in optics. He also had vast experience with balloons - he was Commandant des Aerostiers during the war, serving under General Jourdain in Belgium and Holland in 1803/4, providing valuable observations on the enemy troops and movements from tethered and untethered balloon observing stations; he is also regarded by some as the inventor of the parachute. There was nothing about the balloon described in this pamphlet that would have worked, and Robertson knew it, intending his work to be more of caricature of existing attempts in flight than as a science fiction creation. The balloon was to have been one of the biggest ever designed with a 150 foot diameter for a load of 161,000 lbs including 60 scientists, plus some ladies who have their own quarters, and it was to be fitted out with a library, church, exercise area, chemistry laboratory, music room, food and wine storage, kitchen, the only place where a fire is allowed, etc. It is also provided with a small ship underneath for sea landings. The first edition which is extremely scarce was first published in Vienne, France in 1804. This is mentioned on the title page and see Tissandier, Bibliographie Aeronautique page 33. It was an influential book on galvanism, that presented for the first time a series of experiments in which the principles of Volta and Galvani were used together. The fine series of plates illustrated the experiments which involved bodies and heads of animals and humans. For the first time a description appears here of the magnetization of steel needles through connection to a voltaic circuit..." (Zitat) - Giovanni Aldini was a nephew of Luigi Galvani, whose treatise on muscular electricity he edited with notes in 1791.         Small archive of original watercolours drawn during the Krusenstern voyage to Japan

Nagasaki,: 1804-, 1805.. Nagasaki,: 1804-, 1805.. A small archive of 12 original watercolours, many signed by Langsdorff, differing sizes and paper-stocks, all showing some degree of wear but with lovely fresh colour (detailed descriptions in note). A rare and important group of original watercolours depicting Japanese people and scenes, drawn on the Pacific voyage of Krusenstern by the physician and naturalist Langsdorff. These fresh and poignant sketches are remarkable survivors, until the present day having been kept in northern Germany by direct descendants of Langsdorff himself, and now revealed as one of the more interesting collections of early Pacific voyage art to remain in private hands. The dream of opening trade between Russia and Japan was one of the main objectives of the Krusenstern expedition, and these personal sketches are a moving record of the time the Russians spent in Nagasaki in 1804 and early 1805, a time when all but the Dutch traders were still being quietly but firmly rejected by the Imperial government. Given the coolness of Japanese relations with Europeans at this time, such glorious eyewitness depictions are most uncommon. Indeed, Langsdorff was one of only seven Russian officers who were allowed to live on shore while they were anchored in Nagasaki, the crucial detail which explains why he was able to make so many sketches of everyday life and the Japanese people. In the event, Langsdorff and the other Russian officers spent over six months politely imprisoned in Nagasaki, at the end of which period their gifts were returned, and they were told to leave and not return. Despite this difficult reception, Langsdorff was fascinated by Japan, as these accomplished watercolour sketches confirm, and in his published narrative gave a minute account of life there, details of which help provide a key to understanding many of the sketches in this group.Formal trade relations between Japan and Europe had been opened in 1609, but after the Shimabara uprising of Japanese Christians in 1637 only the Dutch retained their rights to trade, all other nations being expelled. Over the next two centuries the trade had been jealously protected by the Dutch, but the Langsdorff visit took place at a time of political tensions, not least because of an increasing power vacuum: the Dutch VOC had collapsed into bankruptcy in 1800, and Dutch ships were also suffering because of the Napoleonic War, which meant that their trade lines were being cut by the British Navy. Dutch traders had even been forced to make some tentative arrangements with American vessels, and the arrival of the Russians, while not unexpected, was not enthusiastically greeted.Georg Heinrich von Langsdorff (1771-1852) studied medicine at G?ttingen and like many of his generation became very interested in natural history. He entered Russian service and sailed with Krusenstern in 1803, the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe, around Cape Horn to Kamschatka, making stops at the Marquesas and Hawaii. Langsdorff returned to Russia in 1807, publishing his major account of the voyage in 1812. In his account Langsdorff stated that, though they were politely refused, their Japanese visit was "the most interesting part of our expedition", and devoted nearly 100 pages to their stay at Nagasaki. In their spare time they constructed a Montgolfier-type balloon and made the first aerial ascent in Japan. The published account included a suite of plates, several of which are based on the original sketches in the present group. No doubt the most striking is the harbour scene depicting Japanese officers sent by the Prince Omura on an embassy to the Russian official Rezanov. The large vessel at left is the Nadezhda, while Langsdorff has drawn himself at far right in the act of sketching the scene. It is interesting to see the wide variety of paper used by Langsdorff for his sketches, no doubt testament to the exigencies of life on board long sea-going voyages. Three watermarks are quite distinct, one for the famous Whatman paper (dated 1794), three marked "CR VII", and three "Orholm". At least eight of the sketches are distinctly the originals for the later engravings, while the other four are otherwise unique. Even where a later engraving is known, the difference in quality and detail between the watercolour and the finished plate is extraordinary.A fully illustrated listing with extensive notes is available on request.Eight watercolours copied by the engraver for the official account1. River boat transporting a group of women, fine detail of faces and hairstyles, with two boatmen in loincloths standing.Wove paper sheet watermarked 'J. Whatman 1794', 220 x 280 mm.This boat was later used as part of a larger scene of a Japanese fortress (plate I:16). Langsdorff describes how their ship was towed to the other side of Papen Mountain, and had its first glimpse of Nagasaki proper. While they came to anchor a great many smaller boats came out, as Langsdorff commented, "full of company of both sexes, but particularly of the fair sex... to satisfy their curiosity with a sight of the great Russian ship."2. "Schekita der Strohschuhe verkauft". Portrait of Japanese vendor in blue robes with two baskets of sandals.Pale blue tinted laid paper sheet, 160 x 220 mm.A very similar (but not identical) figure was included at the far left of plate I:17, a scene showing the house inhabited by Ambassador Rezanov in Nagasaki. If the sketch is indeed the original, it has lost something in the translation to the finished engraving, because the details of being a sandal seller - and of course the name - are not on the plate.3. Harbour scene, with much fine detail of a procession of 14 Japanese soldiers and officials in the foreground and a saddled horse, roof and partial side view of a traditional house, and the Nadezhda and a Chinese junk at anchor in the cove, signed Langsdorff.Laid paper sheet watermarked 'CR VII', 335 x 205 mm, old paper repair to one corner (image unaffected). This marvellous scene is the original for the engraved plate which shows Japanese officers sent by the Prince Omura on an embassy to Rezanov (I:18). The accommodation for Rezanov had been a rather contested issue, but after weeks of diplomacy he was finally allowed to take over a small house ashore, in which he lived with a few of the other senior officials and Langsdorff. The large vessel at left is the Nadezhda, while the junk is almost certainly the vessel that had originally been lent by the Japanese as proposed accomodation for the Russian officials (the proposal had been rejected rather forthrightly by Krusenstern). In the text Langsdorff explained this scene in great detail, including a key to all of the figures depicted. For example, the man in trousers (third from the left) is the officer sent as Omura's emissary, and even the hills in the background are "true to nature". Despite this accuracy, the comparison of the lively and detailed original with the finished engraving, shows how much has gone missing in the process of publishing.4. "Rokubo". Front and rear portrait of a monk (?) in white ceremonial dress and hat, with some detail of accoutrements.Laid paper sheet, 205 x 165 mm.This man was later included in the first plate showing the Japanese in "various costumes" in Langsdroff's account (I:22).5. Fine portrait of two men in blue robes, with good detail of costume, faces and sandals. In lieu of hands both men have unusual geometric contraptions, the exact interpretation of which is not clear.Laid paper sheet watermarked 'Orholm', 210 x 335 mm.Certainly the figure of a man in his "raincoat" (Regenkleid) on the left of the image was later included on plate I:23 in the Langsdorff account. In the engraving, the man may be holding a fan? It is not obvious what the second man's hand holds.6. "Ein Japaner im Ceremonien Kleid". Front and rear portrait of samurai in formal dress with two swords, partially coloured.Laid paper sheet watermarked 'Orholm', 205 x 335 mm.This wonderful portrait of a man in his blue robes with swords was later adapted to become the figure on the far right of plate I:22. A good deal has been lost in the translation from original to engraving.7. Portrait of a Japanese woman with ornate hairstyling, patterned kimono and a fan, signed Langsdorff.Laid paper sheet watermarked 'Orholm', 335 x 210 mm.This beautiful portrait was adapted to become the figure in the centre of I:26. This is the most extreme example of the flattening of detail that has taken place in the engraving process, as the original sketch is a vibrant and evocative portrait, unlike the fairly mundane finished engraving.8. "Eines vornehmen Japaners". Portrait of a man holding a child on his shoulder, the child in a parti-coloured robe figured in great detail.Laid paper sheet, 205 x 125 mm.This figure was used as the original for a man holding a child on plate I:26. What the sketches show is the fabulous colour and detail of the child's robe. In the caption to the finished plate Langsdorff comments that the man is a servant of the woman, holding her child on his shoulder. As he noted, children often wear red clothing covered with floral designs.Four watercolours not otherwise recorded:9. "Ein soldat des Prinzen von Omura". Portrait of samurai in blue kimono with detail of insignia, hilts of two swords visible.Laid paper sheet watermarked 'CR VII', 205 x 80 mm.A fine and interesting portrait of a warrior attached to the Prince of Omura. Details of his visage and dress are quite similar to a figure included on plate I:18 (but, if so, quite altered in the processed).10. "Japaneser im Zimmer sitzend". Portrait of three seated men, with detail of kimonos and sword hilts, partially coloured and signed Langsdorff.Laid paper sheet watermarked 'CR VII', 325 x 200 mm.A most interesting depiction of three men in the traditional seated pose. Although sketched in with some rapidity, Langsdorff's eye for detail is shown to advantage in his use of highlight colour.11. "Bonser?" Japanese nobleman in red kimono with blue sash and fabrics, detailed study.Laid paper sheet, 205 x 140 mm.A fine portrait of a man in a voluminous red robe with blue brocading.12. "Minno". Front and rear portrait of male figure in traditional straw? cloak with blue cloth detail, bead necklaces etcetera.Pale blue tinted laid paper sheet, 225 x 345 mm.A double portrait, front and back, of a man in his elaborate fur coat, with various accoutrements at his belt.

London : Rivington and Co, 1804 A collection of the plates from Edward Donovan's beautiful work on British Shells. 178 of 180 plates are present with no text. They have been bound into an inelegant but serviceable binding with buckram spine (with gilt titles) and plain boards. The binding has some wear and is a little grubby. Around 30% are in good to very good clean condition. A further 19% are clean but with some noticeable rippling to the paper. The remainder have some damp staining. This is principally at the margins and generally does not affect the shells themselves. Around 41% have light staining at the margins. The remainder (around 9%) have obtrusive staining. If the plate margins were trimmed, the majority of the staining would be removed.

To the King?s Most Excellent Majesty, this Map of the Island of Jamaica, constructed from actual surveys, under the authority of the Hon. House of Assembly, by whom it hath been examined, and unanimously approved

The father of modern Jamaican cartography, a fantastic wall-map. 1804. London. S.J. Neele. Engraved map on 24 sheets, sectioned and mounted on modern archival paper, original colour (outline and wash) on eastern part of island; several vertical creases with some separation from backing and very minor losses, a few minor surface losses; overall age-toning; moderate spotting at lower centre.First edition. This is probably one of the most striking and sought after maps of the Caribbean Island. Its size is impressive and the aesthetical feature makes it a cornerstone for Jamaican cartography. A very large-scale map, showing physical features such as mountains, streams, and bodies of water, locations of towns and settlements, roads, mills, plantations, harbours, and offshore islands. One of Robertson?s important contributions was that he delineated the new county and parish boundaries that had been established a few years earlier. It is among the early topographic maps to show an entire country (the earliest being the Carte géométrique de la France). James Robertson of Shetland (ca. 1756-1841) was Jamaica?s first real surveyor in the sense that he worked as a cartographer rather than a land surveyor. He came to Jamaica around 1778 and persuaded the Council to give him a commission to survey the entire island for the sum of £5,000 whereupon he commenced surveys of the three counties and the entire island. In 1802 he returned to England to have his map published and subsequently returned to Jamaica. He soon left, however, to return to England where he died. All in all, the Jamaican Council paid him over £10,000 for his work. He is considered the father of modern Jamaican cartography. This grandiose map has been praised since its publication. See B.W. Higman, Jamaica Surveyed: Plantations Maps and Plans of the Eighteenth- and Nineteenth Centuries (Kingston: Institute of Jamaica, 1988) and D. Webster, "The Ubiquitous Scot" in The Map Collector, 56 (Autumn 1991), pp. 32-33Very rare; copies located by OCLC: British Library, Clements (Michigan), National Library of Scotland.

        Slender-Billed Curlew. Numenius tenuirostris; Sav

This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph, "Slender-Billed Curlew. Numenius tenuirostris; Sav", from John Gould?s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds of Europe" (1832-1837) is in very good condition with light foxing throughout. Measuring 14.75" x 21.5", this lithograph magnificently displays the author?s scientific skill and attention to detail. This critically endangered wading bird is expertly hand-colored and detailed with a shades of brown feathers on top and a white and brown speckled underside. Precise lines define and detail each feather and give great dimension to the Curlew, from its head and face to tail-feathers and blue legs. Its long, slender beak used for catching food in the marshy waters, is also finely detailed.John Gould was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country?s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, ?A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.? For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand-color them. One of the most accomplished and engaging natural history works of the 19th century, ?The Birds of Europe? was also the first of Gould's works to feature plates by Edward Lear. A total of sixty-eight images bear Lear's name, and they are among the most remarkable bird drawings ever made. Lear endowed his illustrations with some measure of his own whimsy and intelligence, and his style is at once fluidly spontaneous and realistically precise. In this way, the images of ?The Birds of Europe? are amazingly distinctive, while also highly realistic. Gould undertook this work partly in an effort to redress the imbalance between the study of local and foreign ornithology. Gould portrayed birds native to Europe in a manner that had only been thought appropriate for the colorful species of distant places. In this way he managed to draw much popular interest back to native birds, which were suddenly considered equally beautiful to exotic species.

LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, Commander in Chief of the American Forces...Compiled Under the Inspection of the Hon. Bushrod Washington, From Original Papers Bequeathed to Him by His Deceased Relative. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Washington in Vol. 1, folding view plates in Vols. 2 and 3, a finely engraved vignette tailpiece at the end of Vol. 3, 12 large folding maps of the American colonies in Vols. 1 and 5. A fine and handsome set in the original English calf binding. Some light age evidence to the calf but surprisingly well preserved. Internal hinges are in good order, text blocks sound and tight. An unusually well preserved item. RARE FIRST EDITION IN CONTEMPORARY CALF of one of the great early works on George Washington. The books contain maps of important Revolutionary battles in Virginia, the Carolinas, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Jersey. There is also a fine portrait of Washington and finely engraved view plates. “John Marshall (September 24, 1755 – July 6, 1835) was the Chief Justice of the United States (1801–1835) whose court opinions helped lay the basis for American constitutional law and made the Supreme Court of the United States a coequal branch of government along with the legislative and executive branches. Previously, Marshall had been a leader of the Federalist Party in Virginia and served in the United States House of Representatives from 1799 to 1800. He was Secretary of State under President John Adams from 1800 to 1801. The longest-serving Chief Justice of the United States, Marshall dominated the Court for over three decades and played a significant role in the development of the American legal system. Most notably, he reinforced the principle that federal courts are obligated to exercise judicial review, by disregarding purported laws if they violate the Constitution. Thus, Marshall cemented the position of the American judiciary as an independent and influential branch of government. Furthermore, the Marshall Court made several important decisions relating to federalism, affecting the balance of power between the federal government and the states during the early years of the republic. In particular, he repeatedly confirmed the supremacy of federal law over state law, and supported an expansive reading of the enumerated powers.” ‘Justice Marshall greatly admired George Washington, and between 1804 and 1807 published his influential five-volume biography. The author’s Life of Washington was based on records and papers provided to him by the late president's family. The first volume was reissued in 1824 separately as A History of the American Colonies, and the work reflected Marshall's Federalist principles. His revised and condensed two-volume Life of Washington was published in 1832. Historians have often praised its accuracy and well-reasoned judgments, while noting his frequent paraphrases of published sources such as William Gordon's 1801 history of the Revolution and the British Annual Register. After completing the revision to his biography of Washington, Marshall prepared an abridgment. In 1833 he wrote, "I have at length completed an abridgment of the Life of Washington for the use of schools. I have endeavored to compress it as much as possible. ... After striking out every thing which in my judgment could be properly excluded the volume will contain at least 400 pages." The Abridgment was not published until 1838, three years after Marshall died.’ This biography, here offered in its original five volume, first edition presentation, is still regarded as one of the most important ever penned, and perhaps the only one of real substance written by an extraordinary contemporary utterly active in the birthing of the new nation to which Washington had given the very highest and most noble service during is long life.

In this way, the images of ?The Birds of Europe? are amazingly distinctive, while also highly realistic.Gould undertook this work partly in an effort to redress the imbalance between the study of local and foreign ornithology. Gould portrayed birds native to Europe in a manner that had only been thought appropriate for the colorful species of distant places. In this way he managed to draw much popular interest back to native birds, which were suddenly considered equally beautiful to exotic species.
