        An Essay on the Principle of Population;

London: for J. Johnson, by T. Bensley,, 1803. or, a view of its past and present effects on human happiness; with an inquiry into our prospects respecting the future removal or mitigation of the evils which it occasions. A new edition, very much enlarged. Large quarto (265 × 200 mm). Contemporary russia, neatly rebacked to style, boards with thick-and-thin gilt rule enclosing decorative blind roll, marbled endpapers and edges. Bookplate of Maitland of Aucblane; gilt supralibros of William Douglas surmounted with initials A.E.P. to front cover. One corner lightly bumped, inner hinges skilfully restored, light scattered foxing to outer leaves and occasionally elsewhere, a few early pencilled marginalia, a very good, tall copy, preserving a few uncut lower deckle edges. The Great Quarto edition, notionally the second edition of the Essay on Population published in 1798, but so substantially enlarged, rewritten and re-titled as to be a new book. The most significant change in Malthus's writing was the softening of his harsh conclusion in the first Essay that all checks to population must involve either misery or vice. The Great Quarto Essay proposes that prudential restraint should, if humanly possible, be "moral restraint" – that is, delayed marriage accompanied by strictly moral pre-marital behaviour (although Malthus admitted that moral restraint would not be easy and that there would be occasional failures). Bound at the end of this copy is the Reply to the chief objections which have been urged against the Essay on the Principle of Population. Published in an appendix to the third edition. London: for J. Johnson, by T. Bensley, 1806.

MEMOIRE SUR LA COLONIE DE TOBAGO. EN 1803. AN XI [manuscript title]

[Np, but probably Tobago]. 1803.. [68]pp. plus two folding manuscript plans. Approximately 14,500 words. Folio. Folded sheets, stitched together; stitching loose, some sheets loosely laid in. Spine chipped. Titlepage lightly soiled, some small chips and tears around the edges. Some light soiling and dampstaining to outer leaves, else clean and bright. Written on the right half of each page, with some additional notes or corrections on the left. Near fine. An important document, in French, detailing the functions of the island of Tobago, written by Louis-Maurice Le Rat De Magnitot (1757-1823), colonial prefect of Tobago and Saint-Domingue. Tobago changed hands many times during the 18th century, and the island was briefly in French possession again in 1802-3 before being captured by the British in June of 1803. In this document Magnitot summarizes the situation of the newly reclaimed island. The first four sections of his MEMOIRE deal with military matters. In the first section, "Troupes," he lists seventy-seven men garrisoned on Tobago, noting that the garrison is a varied blend of men. He includes details on discipline, causes of sickness and mortality among the men, and uniforms. The second section, "Artillerie," provides details of the number of guns and munitions at Tobago. The third section, "Fortifications," includes two plans of Man of War Bay, complete with soundings, observations, and important locations marked. This is followed by a section entitled "Marine," in which he details the condition of the ports and harbors. In the next four sections Magnitot gives details about the civil operations of the island: Laws, Police, Agriculture, and Commerce. The section on the law is very detailed, giving the organization of the courts, civil and criminal. The section on police is perhaps the most interesting, in which he gives not only information on keeping the public peace, but also on the public itself. Magnitot delineates, in several separate points, policing among the black populace, the conduct of masters toward slaves, and the condition of roads and the means of their maintenance. In the last of these points, he gives numbers on both the European and colored populace. The "population blanche" numbers no more than 600, while the "population noire" at the time of the assessment numbers 17,485. Breakdowns within each group are also given, dividing rural from urban and free from slave. In the seventh section, "Agriculture," Magnitot declares Tobago's agriculture to be flourishing. He lays out the reasons for that success before going into specific crop information detailing production of coffee, cotton, rum, and sugar. The final section, "Commerce," is the most extensive. It lays out details of Tobago's trade with France, reasons for variation on the flow of commerce, as well as discussing the cost of national trade versus trade with other nations. Clearly, the French administrators hoped Tobago would become a productive colony, but Napoleon's entire American strategy collapsed in 1803, with the loss of Saint-Domingue to the freed slaves, the sale of Louisiana, and the choking off of Caribbean commerce by the Royal Navy. First colonized by the Dutch in the early 17th century, over the next two hundred years Tobago changed hands thirty-three times among the Spanish, Dutch, English, and French, all of them rival colonists. In 1763, Tobago was ceded to Britain, captured by the French in 1781, and then recaptured by the British in 1793. In 1802, Trinidad was ceded to the British through the Treaty of Amiens, and Tobago returned to the French. Britain re- captured it in 1803 when the peace broke and the Napoleonic Wars resumed. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, in 1814, Britain gained formal possession of Tobago with the Treaty of Paris. A fascinating and detailed document illuminating this last brief period of French rule on the island of Tobago, a small part of Napoleon's strategy to build a French empire in America.

A Chronological History of the Discoveries

London,, 1803.. Five volumes, quarto, with 28 engraved maps (18 of them folding), 13 plates and six text woodcuts; several ink notes including six signed "PPK", a long series of pencil notes and annotations (full listing available); some slight spotting and staining but in generally good internal condition, in old dark quarter calf with marbled boards; a good sound set. First edition of 'the most important general history of early South Sea discoveries containing practically everything of importance on the subject' (Hill); Burney's great compilation 'must always form the basis of historical research for early voyages and discoveries throughout the Pacific' (Hocken). The collection covers more than 250 years of Pacific exploration prior to that of Cook, including Spanish, Dutch, French and English voyages, with a general 'History of the Buccaneers of America', and concludes with Bougainville's voyage to Tahiti.Burney, who sailed with Cook as lieutenant during the last two voyages, received encouragement from Sir Joseph Banks (to whom the work is dedicated) and enjoyed free access both to Banks's magnificent library of books and manuscripts, and to Dalrymple's collection of scarcer Spanish books. Whenever possible, he relied on manuscript accounts, generally comparing them with printed narratives for purposes of style. The collection contains much that is nowhere else accessible, and will always remain one of the chief authorities for the history of the geographical exploration and discovery of the Pacific.Burney himself explains (in volume 5) that 'the termination of this present work is adapted to the commencement of voyages in another collection [i.e. that of Hawkesworth], which with the addition of M. de Bougainville's voyage round the world, follow as an immediate sequel, without any chasm being left, to the Discoveries here related...'. This is therefore the essential precursor to the series of voyage publications, starting with Wallis, Carteret, and Cook, that began the new age of discovery.Remarkably, this was Phillip Parker King's own copy of this great voyage compendium, and has occasional but substantial pencil and ink notes throughout. Certainly the ink notes are by Phillip Parker King himself, as six are signed by him "PPK", including one which begins "we caught in the Adventure upwards of 1800lb weight of smelt...". Another of the signed notes discusses an officer on the Beagle, "Lieut. R.H. Shall", who died and was buried there during the visit to the Straits of Magellan. Indeed, the Straits of Magellan are the lodestone for the great bulk of the annotations, unsurprising given King's seminal surveys in the region. The series of pencil notes are more extensive, chiefly small corrections to the text based on experience. They include a few additions to three separate charts, notably some adjustments made to the chart of "Tierra del Fuego." The one lengthy note in pencil (see vol. V, pp. 41-2; illustrated), is signed "PS".King is known to have had a substantial and important voyage library, and Burney's compendium would have been a natural inclusion.Hill, 221; Hocken, pp. 30-34; O'Reilly-Reitman, 104.

This very rare map belongs to a never finished project for the atlas of the so called Società Calcografia, a simple commercial trade realized by the two main Venetian publishers of the XVIII century, Antonio Zatta and Giuseppe Antonio Remondini. The term Società Calcografica has been deduced from the map of the world, which is part of the collection and bears in the lower cartouche the French writing ?à Venise Chez la Societè Chalcographique 1799?. As already stated, the project was never finished for no atlas containing these maps has ever been listed in any bibliography. Very likely, then, the maps have been sold individually, or maybe as part of smaller, custom collections. The maps of the collection derive from Paolo and Francesco Santini?s plates, used by Remondini in his 1782/4 ?Atlas Universelle?, and from the plates of Antonio Zatta?s ?Nuovo Atlante?, published in 1796. Santini?s maps have been beautifully enriched, using the system of small, masked plates which can be perceived through the platemarks on the paper, with great cartouches according to the classical style of Zatta and have been probably engraved by the members of his staff, Pasquali, Zuliani and Pitteri. The cartouches bear very often historical descriptions and maybe the maps have been realized to depict the great geographic changes of the peninsula during the Napoleonic period. The modern bibliography Terre di Langobardia describes some of the maps depicting the Repubblica Cisalpina, presenting them as part of Remondini?s ?Atlas très Nouveau?, which was printed starting from 1800. In our opinion, the two publishers worked together to the realization of the project until Antonio Zatta died (1804), and the complete atlas was never finished because Giuseppe Antonio Remondini also died in 1811. I personally know 61 maps which were part of the project. Copper engraving, fine hand color, in excellent condition. Venezia Venice 515 690

        Das Erbtheil des Vaters

Iffland, August Wilhelm. Das Erbtheil des Vaters. Zur bie t.f. hoftheater. Wien Aus Kosten. Wein, 1803. Produced Vienna Burgtheater Oct. 29, 1802. Richel p.73. 8vo. Contemporary decorated wrappers. 142pp. plus frontispiece. Minor dampstaining. Drama in 4 acts in prose. Earlier performed Berlin 1800; Leipzig1802; Weimar 1802. First published Leipzig, 1802; Two editions of 144 pps exist: this & Frank at Augusburg. Das Erbtheil des Vaters [the father's share of the inheritance], the 52nd play of Iffland's, is an example of Familienstucke, the genre of of "meticulous if sentimental depictions of middle-class home life" for which he became popular (Carlson). In Weimar, Goethe produced 31 of Iffland's plays, as they, according to Carlson, offered relief in politically turbulent times "by their careful exclusion of any possibly disturbing reference to politics, social problems, or history." The author, August Wilhelm Iffland, (1759-1814) was a German actor, director, dramatist (B. Hannover). He entered the Court Theatre of Gotha in 1777. By 1796 he was director of the Nationaltheater in Berlin, a position he held until his death. He is thought to have influenced Goethe's views on acting. He wrote 60 plays or so and wielded an enormous influence on German drama of the time with plays filled with bourgeois emotions and realism. According to Goethe, his best play is Die Hagestolzen (The Bachelor) 1791 which was performed, in its own time, 146 times in Berlin and 115 times in Vienna. Iffland's collected Dramatische Werke in 16 vols was published Leipzig 1798-1802 and Theatralische Werke 10 vls, Leipzig 1858-60.

- Original edition. By appointment of King Carlos III, the revised legislation for the administrative organisation of the overseas colonies of South America and the Philippines was published under Carlos IV. Last desperate efforts to counter independence attempts with a moderate reform of the administration. After centuries of central rule, local representatives of the Crown received more authority to act. These efforts came too late. In 1809, the first declaration of independence from Spanish rule was signed in Quito, thus allowing the foundation of Ecuador. In 1824 from the huge Spanish colonial empire, only Cuba and Puerto Rico were still under Spanish rule. The first ten pages with water stains. Edge with small stain, otherwise a clean and wide margined copy.

ALs to "Citoyen Margerie." Paris, 5 germinal, an XI [March 26", 1803]

Paris, 1803. Chappe, Abraham (1773-post 1840). A.L.s. to "citoyen Margerie." Paris, 5 germinal, an XI [March 26, 1803]. 3pp. Engraved vignette on the first page depicting Mercury, messenger of the gods, flying through the clouds holding a Chappe telegraph semaphore. 240 x 183 mm. The optical telegraph system created by the four Chappe brothers-Claude, Abraham, Ignace, and Pierre-debuted in the 1790s and remained in use until superseded by the electric telegraph in the 1850s; it represents one of the first organized data networks. It came into being during a period of considerable unrest in France-the French Revolution was in full swing and France was at war with several neighboring countries. The times favored the development of an organized, nationwide system of communication that would enable France's central government to receive and transmit intelligence in the shortest possible time. The chief architect of the Chappe telegraph was Claude Chappe (1763-1805), who began working on designs for the telegraph in 1789. After experimenting successfully with visual signaling devices that used pendulums and modified clock faces, Claude and his brothers devised a semaphore telegraph consisting of a large beam (the regulator) with smaller wings (indicators) mounted at each end. These could be manipulated in various ways to signal alphabetic, numeric, and other coded symbols between stations, at a rate of one symbol every ten to thirty seconds. The first optical telegraph line, consisting of nineteen stations built between Paris and Lille, a distance of 190 km. or about 120 miles, was opened in July 1794. In August 1794 the telegraph was used to report two major French military victories; this happy news established Claude Chappe's reputation as a benefactor of his country, and insured the French government's continued support of the telegraph. By 1805 there were four main branches extending from Paris into the north, east, west, and south of France. Similar networks soon sprang up throughout Europe, particularly in Sweden, where Abraham Nicolas Edelcrantz's shutter-based optical telegraph was in use until 1888. Chappe's visual telegraph system remained operational in France until 1852, when it was superseded by an electric telegraph; at the time of its replacement, the Chappe telegraph network covered more than three thousand miles and included 556 separate stations (Singer et al. 1958, 4: 644-47; Holzmann and Pehrson 1995, 47-96). Abraham Chappe, the youngest of the Chappe brothers, was appointed an administrator of the Paris-Lille line in September 1793, and was sent to Lille by Claude to supervise the line's construction. His letter, to a newly hired line inspector, has to do with the Lille-Brussels branch of the telegraph, begun and completed in 1803. 2v. Arms of French King on upper covers. Very fine

Firmin Didot Paris: Firmin Didot, 1803.From a Royal Library Berthollet, Claude Louis (1748-1822). Essai de statique chimique. 2 vols., 8vo. viii, 543 [1]; viii, 555 [1, errata]pp. Paris: Firmin Didot, 1803. 197 x 125 mm. Tree sheep, gilt spines, French royal arms in gilt on front covers. Occasional scattered foxing, but fine otherwise. First edition. Berthollet attempted to provide chemistry with an adequate theoretical foundation so that its experimental results could be analyzed on the basis of theoretical first principles. He gave a thorough critique of the contemporary oversimplified concept of the law of chemical affinity, which had not yet been properly examined; Berthollet's main contribution to the development of this concept was his proof that chemical affinity was relative, varying with the physical conditions-quantity, temperature, solubility, pressure, physical state-accompanying a chemical experiment. He introduced the highly important concept of "chemical mass"-relative affinity combined with the mass of reactants in a chemical combination-to give the total force with which a given quantity of a substance reacted with another. He was probably the first chemist to perform an exhaustive investigation of how physical conditions affect chemical reactions, creating a molecular model of matter to explain the effects of temperature and density on chemical reactions.

Erste Ausgabe. - Garrison/Morton 4923; Heirs of Hippocrates 1163 (Ausg. 1818): 'One of the earliest systematic works on psychotherapy. In it Reil sets forth principles and different techniques of therapy. Although he did not formulate a comprehensive theory of personality, he recognized the necessity of understanding the healthy personality before the pathological personality could be understood. He believed that mental illness is a psychological phenomenon which requires psychological methods of treatment and was convinced of the close relationship between mind and body. Even though he espoused many enlightened views, his therapeutic procedures included throwing patients into water and firing cannons in order to return them to rationality. Considered crude by today's standards, his psychotherapeutic methods were nevertheless the result of his deep knowledge of medicine and clinical psychiatry and his work is considered by some to represent the beginnings of modern psychotherapy.' IV, 756). - Durchgehend leicht stockfleckig.

An essay on the principle of population. 2nd ed

      J. Johnson London: J. Johnson, 1803. The "Struggle for Existence" Malthus, Thomas (1766-1834). An essay on the principle of population; or a view of its past and present effects on human happiness . . . 4to. viii, [4], 610pp. London: T. Bensley for J. Johnson, 1803. 285 x 225 mm. (uncut). Original boards, rebacked, endpapers renewed, one corner restored. Tape repair to last leaf, minor foxing, but a very good copy, preserved in a cloth case.Second edition, extensively revised and four times larger than the original edition of 1798. The 1803 edition was the first to have Malthus's name on the title, and the first to contain numerical data supporting his claim that populations increase by geometrical proportion but food supplies only increase arithmetically. "Malthus was one of the founders of modern economics. His Essay was originally the product of a discussion on the perfectibility of society with his father . . . Thus the first edition (published anonymously) was essentially a fighting tract, but later editions were considerably altered and grew bulkier as Malthus defended his views against a host of critics . . . The Essay was highly influential in the progress of though in early nineteenth century Europe [and] his influence on social policy was considerable . . . Both Darwin and Wallace clearly acknowledged Malthus as a source of the idea of the 'struggle for existence'" (Printing and the Mind of Man 251). Garrison-Morton 1693. Kress B4701.

Frostell). Elfte bandet, häfte 1-3 häftad, oskuren med tryckt blått omslag. 10 volymer och ett häfte. Krok 98 ff. Lindberg, Swedish books, 55. Nissen 2223. Stafleu TL2 7247. Första delen i andra upplagan. Palmstruchs planscher är, enligt Lindroth. sannolikt de bästa växtbilder som presterats i Sverige, "...and make this one of the most beautiful of Swedish books"

        Poems on Various Subjects

London: Sold by Longman and Rees and J. Hatchard 1803 First edition. Contemporary blue boards, uncut and partially unopened, rebacked to style, with new printed paper label. . Octavo. Long subscriber's list at rear (according to Jackson, the subscribers totaled 3,000). Edges of boards rubbed, old ownership signature, dated 1859. A very good copy. This is the first book of Anne MacVicar Grant (1755-1838), the Glasgow-born poet and author. Grant and her mother followed her father, a military man, to New York in 1758, and they remained there for ten years. She discusses her experiences in Memoirs of an American Lady (1808). In 1779, she married a clergyman named Grant, who was garrison-chaplain at Fort Augustus and minsiter of the parish of Laggan in Inverness-shire. Her husband's death in 1801 left her penniless and in need of providing for her children, so she began a writing career. Her works include Letters from the Mountains; being the real correspondence of a lady between the years 1773 and 1807 (1807), Essays on the Superstitions of the Highlanders (1811), and translations of Ossian. Her literary friends included Scott, Lockhart, and DeQuincey.

Sketches on the Intrinsic Strength, Military and Naval Force of Russia and France

unknown possibly London Hague: unknown, possibly London, 1803. First edition. Quarto. Half calf, vellum corners, marbled paper covered boards. Part I [all that was published]. 182pp, 6pp. postcript; "The Second Part of these Sketches, 12pp. Tall copy with wide margins, exceedingly scarce and precocious treatise on threat of Napolean and the intracies and strategies of war and how to avoid it, with special respect to Russia and also Great Britain. The author has remained unknown to this day, but from "The Edinburgh Review" of 1804 we have some inkling to his identity: "This is altogether a very singular work. The language is that of a foreigner pretty well acquainted with English, or of an Englishman who, by long residence abroad, has lost the free use of his native tongue." A most intriguing and exceedingly scarce volume on Napoleanic France, only one other copy located on the market. A superb copy with only light wear and discoloration to binding, near fine.

        Elémens de Statique.Paris: Calixte-Volland, 1803.

A fine copy of the rare first edition of this classic of which no less than twelve editions appeared between 1803 and 1877. "It was in mechanics that Poinsot most effectively displayed his gift for geometry. Although 'Éléments de Statique' (1803) was merely a manual designed for candidates to the École Polytechnique, the work possessed the great merit of applying geometric methods to the study of elementary problems of mechanics and of introducing the concept of the couple." (DSB, XI, p.62). "Poinsot began in normal style: statics was based on equilibrium, forces could be composed and decomposed, and so on. But then he broke new ground with a discussion of the 'composition and decomposition of couples' (ch.1, sect. 2). The couple had long been known in mechanics, but regarded only as a particular system of forces ... Poinsot raised its status in mechanics with this discussion." (Grattan-Guiness). Poinsot devoted his long Chapter 2 to an account of equilibrium, and Chapter 3 to the centre of gravity. (Grattan-Guiness, Convolutions in French Mathematics 1800-1840, Vol. I, pp. 358-360). Scarce.. 8vo: 204 x 132 mm. Contemporary calf, spine gilt (top of spine chipped, corners a little worn). Internally fine. (8), 267, (1:blank) pp. and 4 folding engraved plates
