Nella Stamperia del Giornale Italico, Milano 1803 - Signed by both authors opposite the index. Language: Italian. There is a prior owner's name written on the top left corner of the front endpaper, as well as an attached bookplate; there is also a small stamp on the title page; no other owners' marks. The pages are considerably rippled, and there are water-stains and foxing in the margins of several pages, though there is no adhesion or associated odor; p. 345 bears a large tear at the bottom free corner, with some text loss. Binding is relaxed at the hinges, with some stitching exposed, but is otherwise secure. The gilt titles at the spine remain clear and legible, but there is noticeable flaking and rubbing to the leather spine, with a small chip at the spine heel and heavy wear at the corners; the marbled design on the paper hard cover is almost entirely rubbed away, and there is significant wear at the cover edges, otherwise sound. 357 pp. + Index and 10 foldout illustrations. This is the 1803 first edition of the historic treatise on fencing written by Giuseppe Rosaroll Scorza and Pietro Grisetti in defense of the "Scuola Napoletana." It has been signed by both authors. Parthenäis oder die Alpenreise. Ein idyllisches Epos in neun Gesängen.

Orig. udgave. Hamburg u. Mainz: Gottfried Vollmer [1803]. 364 s. Potel Fme. Calodeaux... Troisieme Edition Revue et Corigée

Paris: Chez Decombe. [ca. 1803]. Folio. Newly bound in marbled boards with printed paper title label to spine. 1f. (illustrated title designed and engraved by F. Debrot), i-iv (preface), 335, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved thoughout, with four folding plates of musical examples. & & Slightly worn, soiled and browned; some foxing, primarily to margins, heavier to several leaves; lower outer corners of last ca. 50ff. slightly dampstained; previous owner's signature ("Arthur Gaimant") to title. . The third edition (expanded from the first of 1798) of this renowned treatise on playing the violin, Cartier's major work. RISM BVI p. 209 (the two earlier editions). & & The illustrated title, designed and engraved by F. Debret, with text by Lefrançois, is an outstanding example of the art of the decorative music title-page. The elegantly engraved text is within a wide architectural border incorporating emblematic portraits of the famous violinist-composers Corelli, Tartini, Mozart, Stamitz, Gavines and Le Clair. & & "From 1791 to 1821 [Cartier] was assistant leader of the Paris Opéra orchestra. In addition, he was a member of the court orchestra from 1804 to 1830, serving under both Napoleon and the Bourbon regime..."& & "...This imposing volume ["L'art du violon"] contained a comprehensive selection of sonatas and single movements composed by Italian, French and German masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. Cartier included both manuscripts and early editions, and he salvaged a number of masterpieces from oblivion. For example, the volume contained the first publication of Tartini's 'Devil's Trill' Sonata (after a manuscript copy owned by Baillot) and of Bach's Fugue in C major for violin solo (after a copy owned by Gaviniès). Equally important was a reprint of seven sonatas by Nardini, after an edition of 1760 (now lost), and the first complete republication of Tartini's "L'arte del arco," consisting of 50 variations on a gavotte by Corelli. In collecting and publishing all this material, Cartier secured for himself an important place in the history of the violin." Grove online

London: Printed by and for C. and R. Baldwin, 1803.. Two volumes. [32],xxiv,460;[4],583,[1]pp. Octavo. Handsome recent half calf and marbled boards, raised bands, gilt labels. Ownership signature on each title (see below), occasional foxing and a few isolated spots, corner of one leaf turned down, resulting in extended edges from original binding; a very good set. First edition of this relatively early work by the prolific journalist, editor and miscellaneous writer (c. 1777 - 1819). While one would naturally assume a work such as this would be accompanied by a map, the prefatory advertisement notes that the deterioration of relations between France and England resulted in the maps intended to be included being impounded at Calais. The descriptions of Parisian society, art and architecture, and manners are extensive, and include occasional anecdotes of scandal and high living. Though industrious, Blagdon fell victim to a weakness for financial speculation and died in poverty and obscurity. This set bears the ownership signature (last name only) on each title of U.S. diplomat and Congressman, Samuel Sitgreaves. OCLC: 779454.

2 volumes, octavo (194 × 120 mm). Contemporary French mottled calf, flat spines decorated gilt in compartments, red and green spine labels. Spines a little faded, head and foot of spines skilfully repaired. First edition of Say's masterpiece, one of the great works of the classical period of economic thought. Though Say ranks with Sismondi and Cournot in the originality of his contributions to economics, his reputation has suffered from his being put down primarily as an exponent of Adam Smith. Schumpeter, who calls his work "the most important of the links in the chain that leads from Cantillon and Turgot to Walras" offers convincing arguments to prove that Say does indeed belong to the French tradition.

        A Group of Carnations

Robert James Thornton, 1803. unbound. Mezzotint, aquatint, and stipple engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19.5" x 13.75". This lovely print of a group of six carnations in different colors and patterns sets them against a river landscape. A classical-style temple to the right side suggests the Mediterranean region to which it is native. The delicate colors of blue, pink, and orange on the flowers are due to the intaglio method of printing, which combined mezzotint, aquatint, line, and stipple engraving, finished with watercolor. This second state of the image appeared in Robert James Thornton's elephant folio edition of "The Temple of Flora." This collection of 32 large-scale floral prints, while considered a masterpiece today, was ridiculed in its time for its lavishness in comparison to typically more austere botanical imagery. Since then, however, it has become one of the most admired illustrated botanical set ever published in Britain. The print is in good condition, with slight browning on the edges of the margins not affecting the image. Dr. Robert John Thornton (1768-1837) was an English physician and botanical writer. A specialist in medical botany, Thornton dedicated the later part of his life to publishing collections of floral plates. "The Temple of Flora" was the final and most ambitious volume of "A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnæus," which Thornton commissioned and compiled between 1797 and 1807. This print is a lovely example of his work.

        De la richesse commerciale,

Geneva Chez J.J. Paschoud 1803 - "The First Critic of Industrial Capitalism" SISMONDI, J[ean] C[harles] L[eonard Simonde de]. Geneva: Chez J.J. Paschoud, An XI (1803). Scarce first edition of Sismondi’s important work. Two octavo volumes. [4], lxxxv, [1, blank], 348; [4], 448 pp. In the original blue paper wrappers with printed paper spine labels (labels defective). Library shelf label at foot of spine. Joints split but firm. A very clean and fresh copy. Uncut and largely unopened. Housed in a red cloth clamshell case. Born in Geneva, the son of a Calvinist clergyman, Sismondi (1773-1842) was "the first critic of industrial capitalism" (Blaug). "Sismondi’s first venture into economics, the two- volume De la richesse commerciale was intended as a systematic exposition of the ideas of Adam Smith. Yet in it Sismondi also pointed out that he was presenting ‘an absolutely new’ way of looking at aggregate output changes. Crude arithmetic examples depicted output during a given year as a function of investment during a previous year, and showed how a closed economy differed from an economy with international trade, and how the latter differed when there was an export surplus and an import surplus. Algebraic formulas in his footnotes repeated the same arguments presented arithmetically in the text. But the book was little noticed, and so Sismondi’s original efforts produced no contribution to the development of economics" (The New Palgrave). De la Richesse commerciale "has a number of original features, for example, it includes an early statement ascribing the international exchange of goods to differences in factor endowments and factor prices—England, being plentifully endowed with capital, will import labor-intensive goods, such as lace from France, from countries where capital is relatively scarce and wages low. Sismondi here points the way to doctrinal developments that were bought to full fruition by Ohlin in the twentieth century but were overshadowed during the nineteenth century by the Ricardian doctrine of comparative cost, which was primarily designed to demonstrate the gains from trade" (Spiegel, p. 303). Theocaris describes Sismondi as the only French author of his time who was considerably influenced by Canard, noting that in the introduction to De la richesse commerciale Sismondi "admitted that many times in the earlier chapters of his book he had nothing better to do than repeat Canard’s ideas. He does not, however, imitate Canard in the use of mathematics except once, ‘car appliquer ce langage à une science qui n'est point exacte c'est s'exposer à des erreurs continuelles’. His main attempt at mathematical economics is when he tries to show that in both a closed economy and with foreign trade a country, ceteris paribus, will be progressing, declining or stationary according to the level of wages" (Early Developments in Mathematical Economics (1983), pp. 78ff). Old library stamps to half titles. Trained as a physician, the French chemist Berthollet attempted to provide a proper basis for chemistry, so that its experimental results could be viewed in the light of theoretical first principles. In his attempt to provide chemistry with an adequate theoretical foundation, Berthollet recognized the importance of the theory of affinity. According to the Essai, there were two main types of force in nature: gravitation, which accounted for astronomical phenomena, and chemical affinity. He proved that Chemical affinity was relative, varying with the physical conditions accompanying a chemical experiment: quantity, temperature, solubility, pressure, and physical state. Berthollet 'introduced the highly important concept of 'chemical mass'-relative affinity combined with the mass of reactants in a chemical combination-to give the total force with which a given quantity of a substance reacted with another' (Norman)..

Christ. Leop. Reinhold.

2 Tle. in 1 Bd. 2 gefaltete Kupfertafeln, XII, 227 S. - (1 Bl.), 229-328, 176 S., (1 Bl.). Halblederband der Zeit mit Rückenschild (Vordergelenk restauriert). 2 Tle. in 1 Bd. Sehr seltene erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Vgl. Wheeler/Gift I, 630 und Roller/Goodman II, 474 (beide französ. Original-Ausgabe).
