        The Pitcher Plant

London 1803 - Dr. Robert John Thornton (1768-1837) hand-colored engraving, 21.5" x 18", The Pitcher Plant, is from his book titled The Temple of Flora, or Garden of Nature, Picturesque Botanical Plates of the new Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus. Thornton began to indulge his lifelong love for botany in 1799. Determined to surpass the Germans in scholarship and the French in printing artistry, he planned a book of philosophic and literary distinction, illustrated by some of the best painters working in Britain. Within the book there are five frontispieces, portraits and allegorical compositions with thirty-two plates of flowers. Thornton made up each set with twenty-nine or thirty-two in varied arrangements. The lengthy text was primarily written by Thornton himself, where artists were commissioned to design and paint the images. The majority of designs were done by Peter Henderson and Philip Reinagle. The intaglio plates - a varied combination of mezzotint, aquatint, line and stipple engraving, finished with watercolor -were executed by Bartolozzi and other English masters. The title notwithstanding, few of the plates are of scientific interest. It is the forceful stylization of flowers, together with their historical, allegorical and/or fanciful backgrounds (prescribed by Thornton) that place the Temple of Flora among the greatest botanical books of all time. With only slight tearing on the left edge due to binding, The Pitcher Plant plate is brilliantly colored and in excellent condition.

Geschichte des Galvanismus. Nach Sue d. A. frey bearbeitet nebst Zusätzen und einer Abhandlung über die Anwendung des Galvanismus in der praktischen Heilkunde von Joh. Christ. Leop. Reinhold.

Leipzig, J. C. Hinrichs, 1803. - 2 Tle. in 1 Bd. 2 gefaltete Kupfertafeln, XII, 227 S. - (1 Bl.), 229-328, 176 S., (1 Bl.). Halblederband der Zeit mit Rückenschild (Vordergelenk restauriert). Sehr seltene erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Vgl. Wheeler/Gift I, 630 und Roller/Goodman II, 474 (beide französ. Original-Ausgabe). Essay on the Principle of Population Or, A view of its past and present effects on human happiness; With an inquiry into our prospects respecting the future removal or mitigation of the evils which it occasions. A new edition, very much enlarged.

London Printed for J. Johnson.by T. Bensley 1803 - The Economics of Population MALTHUS, T[homas] R[obert]. An Essay on the Principle of Population; Or, a view of its past and present effects on Human Happiness; With an Inquiry into our prospects respecting the future removal or mitigation of the evils which it occasions. A new edition, very much enlarged. London: Printed for J. Johnson. by T. Bensley, 1803. Second edition, enlarged and revised. Quarto. viii, [4], 610 pp. Contemporary calf, skillfully rebacked to style and with corners renewed. Spine decoratively tooled in gilt compartments with burgundy morocco gilt lettering label. Endpapers renewed. Occasional light foxing. Title-page with publisher's diagonal paper flaw crease. Overall very good. A completely revised and greatly expanded edition of the most influential work on population ever written. Malthus published the first edition of his Essay in 1798, and was apparently unprepared for the torrent of controversy that his ideas provoked. His response to the public outcry was to spend the next five years refining and expanding his theories for this second edition, so much so that "in its present shape, it may be considered a new work, and I should probably have published it as such, omitting the few parts of the former which I have retained, but that I wished it to form a whole of itself, and not to need a continual reference to the other." (preface) Malthus' basic argument--that population increases geometrically at a greater rate than does the means of subsistence, which increases arithmetically--was one of the earliest modern economic and social theories, and his contention that it would eventually become necessary for society to impose some form of restraint on over-population provided the premise for heated socio-economic debate for almost two centuries.         MANUSCRIPT LETTER, SIGNED, FROM THE FRENCH COLONIAL PREFECT OF LOUISIANA, LAUSSAT, TO CAPTAIN GUILLERMO DUPARC, COMMANDANT OF THE POINT COUPEE POST, TELLING HIM OF THE SPANISH RETROCESSION OF LOUISIANA TO THE FRENCH, AND INSTRUCTING HIM TO TAKE THE NECESSARY MEASURES TO EXERT CONTROL OVER HIS PARISH].

New Orleans. December 10 [i.e. 9], 1803 [17 Frimaier an 12]. - [1]p. letter on a folded folio sheet, with engraved scene entitled "Republique Francaise" at the top of the first page. A few manuscript notes and calculations on the second and fourth pages. Old folds. Some soiling on fourth page, a bit of ink bleedthrough. Very good. [with:] [PRINTED INVITATION, SENT BY THE FRENCH COLONIAL PREFECT OF LOUISIANA, LAUSSAT, FOR A GALA IN HONOR OF THE SPANISH COMMANDER IN LOUISIANA, AND IN ANTICIPATION OF HANDING THE LOUISIANA TERRITORY OVER TO THE UNITED STATES]. December 11, 1803 [19 Frimaire an XII]. [1]p., printed on a folded quarto sheet, addressed in manuscript on the fourth page. Small tear in upper right corner of first page, half-inch split along one fold. Very good. The pair in a half morocco clamshell case, cloth chemises. A remarkable pair of documents, announcing to a local French commander the completion of the transfer of Louisiana from Spanish to French control, and inviting him to an upcoming gala in honor of the local Spanish commander and the forthcoming transfer of Louisiana Territory to the United States. The letter and invitation are both addressed to Captain Guillermo Duparc, commandant of the Point Coupee military outpost, just northwest of Baton Rouge. Pierre Clément de Laussat, the last French Colonial Prefect of Louisiana, arrived there in late March 1803, just a month before the Louisiana Purchase Treaty was signed in Paris (on April 30). Spain had ceded Louisiana to the French in the Treaty of San Ildefonso of 1800, though the provisions of the treaty had remained a secret; his immediate responsibility was to oversee the transfer from Spain to France. Laussat had been hearing rumors since his arrival of a potential sale of Louisiana from France to the Americans, and those rumors were officially confirmed to him in August. In May 1803 the Spanish commanders of Louisiana, including the Marquis de Casa Calvo, announced the forthcoming retrocession of Louisiana from Spanish to French control, a process that was formally completed on November 30, 1803. In the present letter, dated just nine days after the completion of the Spanish retrocession, Laussat writes Duparc, sending him (in translation from the French) "the order which I have issued concerning taking possession of the French Republic of Louisiana in your district. I reached an agreement on it, in advance, with the Commissioners of S.M.C. [Sa Majeste Catholique, i.e. King Charles IV of Spain] dated the 12th of Frimaire [December 4, 1803]." Laussat writes that, along with the proclamation, he is sending Duparc various decrees regarding the circumstances of French control and asks him to redouble his efforts for tranquility, peace, and order in his district. The proclamation and decrees mentioned by Laussat are not present with this letter. The manuscript letter is on Laussat's official letterhead, with the seal of the French Republic and the engraved text, "Marine. Coloniea. Louisiane." Interestingly, Laussat has annotated the pre-printed portion of the letter, changing his title from "Colonial Prefect of Louisiana" to "Colonial Prefect Commissioner of the French Government," reflecting the new political situation after the Spanish hand- over of the territory to the French just nine days earlier. The printed invitation is also addressed to M. Duparc, and is very rare, located by Jumonville in only one other copy, at the Historic New Orleans Collection. Dated December 11, 1803, it invites Duparc to a soiree hosted by Laussat on "next Thursday," the 15th of December. The party was being held to commemorate the transfer of Louisiana from Spanish to French control, and its impending transfer to the United States. More specifically the party was in honor of the Spanish commander, the Marquis de Casa-Calvo, brigadier of the Spanish armies, in thanks for the Spaniards' efforts in recent days, and as a sign of the union and friendship between the Spanish and French governments. On December 20, 1803, just eleven days after w

Occasional scattered foxing, but fine otherwise. </p><p>First edition. Berthollet attempted to provide chemistry with an adequate theoretical foundation so that its experimental results could be analyzed on the basis of theoretical first principles. He gave a thorough critique of the contemporary oversimplified concept of the law of chemical affinity, which had not yet been properly examined; Berthollet&#39;s main contribution to the development of this concept was his proof that chemical affinity was relative, varying with the physical conditions-quantity, temperature, solubility, pressure, physical state-accompanying a chemical experiment. He introduced the highly important concept of "chemical mass"-relative affinity combined with the mass of reactants in a chemical combination-to give the total force with which a given quantity of a substance reacted with another. He was probably the first chemist to perform an exhaustive investigation of how physical conditions affect chemical reactions, creating a molecular model of matter to explain the effects of temperature and density on chemical reactions.         Cession of the District of Matavai in the Island of Otaheite, to Captain James Wilson for the use of the Missionaries sent thither by that Society in the Ship Duff is Most Respectfully Dedicated, by their most obedient servants Willm Jeffrys and Co.

London: 1803 - The title is preceded by the phrase "To the Treasurer and Directors of the London Missionary Society, this print representing the Cession." Black & white mezzotint, as issued. 29 1/2" by 23" with sml. margins. Includes the engraved title. London, January 1st, 1803. For the Benefit of the Missionary Society. A large separately-issued mezzotint by Bartolozzi after the original oil painting by Smirke which is held by the National Library of Australia. Laid down on linen, which nicely stabilizes some slight creases & small marginal tears, two of which affect the caption, one barely into the plate. One sml. hole repaired. Overall, the picture is very bright, with warm glowing shades of gray nuancing the gathering of missionaries. England was enamored with Omai, the first Polynesian native to visit London, who accompanied Capt. James Cook after his 2nd voyage. He was seen as a living example of the "noble savage". However, Omai returned to the South Pacific in 1776 without being converted to Christianity, which was seen as a missed opportunity. To rectify that situation, the London Missionary Society was established, and in 1796, the ship Duff was dispatched with a group of 18 missionaries to Tahiti, under the command of Captain James Wilson. Wilson is seen in the foreground holding his hat, facing Chief Pomare. The Queen is held in the air on the shoulders of natives. At least 24 Tahitians & 17 Europeans are pictured on Matavai Bay. Nan Kivell & Spence, p. 324, National Library of Australia website. A very scarce print.

        DELPHINE - ÉDITION ORIGINALE FRANCAISE

Maradan 1803 - A Paris, chez Maradan, an XI - 1803, 6 vols in-12°, [xxiv, 1-282,283-585pp.] , [1-290,291-525pp.] , [1-226,227-413, 1f. d'Errata, 23pp. Vicaire VII, 650 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MEMOIRE SUR LA COLONIE DE TOBAGO. EN 1803. AN XI [manuscript title].

[Np, but probably Tobago]. 1803. - [68]pp. plus two folding manuscript plans. Approximately 14,500 words. Folio. Folded sheets, stitched together; stitching loose, some sheets loosely laid in. Spine chipped. Titlepage lightly soiled, some small chips and tears around the edges. Some light soiling and dampstaining to outer leaves, else clean and bright. Written on the right half of each page, with some additional notes or corrections on the left. Near fine. An important document, in French, detailing the functions of the island of Tobago, written by Louis-Maurice Le Rat De Magnitot (1757-1823), colonial prefect of Tobago and Saint-Domingue. Tobago changed hands many times during the 18th century, and the island was briefly in French possession again in 1802-3 before being captured by the British in June of 1803. In this document Magnitot summarizes the situation of the newly reclaimed island. The first four sections of his MEMOIRE deal with military matters. In the first section, "Troupes," he lists seventy-seven men garrisoned on Tobago, noting that the garrison is a varied blend of men. He includes details on discipline, causes of sickness and mortality among the men, and uniforms. The second section, "Artillerie," provides details of the number of guns and munitions at Tobago. The third section, "Fortifications," includes two plans of Man of War Bay, complete with soundings, observations, and important locations marked. This is followed by a section entitled "Marine," in which he details the condition of the ports and harbors. In the next four sections Magnitot gives details about the civil operations of the island: Laws, Police, Agriculture, and Commerce. The section on the law is very detailed, giving the organization of the courts, civil and criminal. The section on police is perhaps the most interesting, in which he gives not only information on keeping the public peace, but also on the public itself. Magnitot delineates, in several separate points, policing among the black populace, the conduct of masters toward slaves, and the condition of roads and the means of their maintenance. In the last of these points, he gives numbers on both the European and colored populace. The "population blanche" numbers no more than 600, while the "population noire" at the time of the assessment numbers 17,485. Breakdowns within each group are also given, dividing rural from urban and free from slave. In the seventh section, "Agriculture," Magnitot declares Tobago's agriculture to be flourishing. He lays out the reasons for that success before going into specific crop information detailing production of coffee, cotton, rum, and sugar. The final section, "Commerce," is the most extensive. It lays out details of Tobago's trade with France, reasons for variation on the flow of commerce, as well as discussing the cost of national trade versus trade with other nations. Clearly, the French administrators hoped Tobago would become a productive colony, but Napoleon's entire American strategy collapsed in 1803, with the loss of Saint-Domingue to the freed slaves, the sale of Louisiana, and the choking off of Caribbean commerce by the Royal Navy. First colonized by the Dutch in the early 17th century, over the next two hundred years Tobago changed hands thirty-three times among the Spanish, Dutch, English, and French, all of them rival colonists. In 1763, Tobago was ceded to Britain, captured by the French in 1781, and then recaptured by the British in 1793. In 1802, Trinidad was ceded to the British through the Treaty of Amiens, and Tobago returned to the French. Britain re- captured it in 1803 when the peace broke and the Napoleonic Wars resumed. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, in 1814, Britain gained formal possession of Tobago with the Treaty of Paris. A fascinating and detailed document illuminating this last brief period of French rule on the island of Tobago, a small part of Napoleon's strategy to build a French empire in America.

Baddle 1859" on the top of the title page. Some light intermittant spotting and staining, but a nice clean copy with wide margins. Garrison-Morton 1693; Carpenter XXXII (2); Einaudi 3668; Goldsmiths&#146; 18640; Kress B.4701; Mattioli 2207, See Printing and the Mind of Man # 251. The great quarto edition of Malthus' masterpiece, a very important work in the field of economics and a source of Darwin's "idea of 'the struggle for existence'" (PMM) The Reverend[Thomas Robert Malthus FRS (1766 &#150; 1834) was a British scholar, influential in political economy and demography. He has become widely known for his theories concerning population, and its increase or decrease in response to various factors. The six editions of his Principles of Population, published from 1798 to 1826, observed that sooner or later population gets checked by famine, disease, and widespread mortality. The central idea is a simple one: that population expands geometrically while food production grows arithmetically. This edition, though being the second, may be considered as a new work, which Malthus himself also claimed; -it is thoroughly revised and much enlarged (nearly four times the length of the original essay, the title has been changed (the title of the first is merely: "An Essay on the Principle of Population, as it Affects the Future Improvement of Society with Remarks on the Speculation of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and Other Writers") He notes: "In the course of this inquiry, I found that much more had been done, than I had been aware of, when I first published the essay. The poverty and misery arising from a too rapid increase of population, had been distinctly seen, and the most violent remedies proposed, so long ago as the times of Plato and Aristotle. And of late years, the subject had been treated in such a manner, by some of the French economists, occasionally by Montesquieu, and, among our own writers, by Dr. Franklin, Sir James Steuart, Mr. Arthur Young, and Mr. Townsend, as to create a natural surprise, that it had not excited more of the publick attention" (Preface to the second edition, p. IV). "The "Essay" was highly influential in the progress of thought in the early nineteenth-century Europe. "Parson" Malthus, as Cobbett dubbed him, was for many, a monster and his views were often grossly misinterpreted. But his influence on social policy, whether for good or evil, was considerable. The Malthusian theory of population came at the right time to harden the existing feeling against the Poor Laws and Malthus was a leading spirit behind the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834." (PMM 251)
