        DELPHINE - ÉDITION ORIGINALE FRANCAISE

Maradan 1803 - A Paris, chez Maradan, an XI - 1803, 6 vols in-12°, [xxiv, 1-282,283-585pp.] , [1-290,291-525pp.] , [1-226,227-413, 1f. d'Errata, 23pp. Vicaire VII, 650 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Bound in contemporary full calf, rebacked at an early time with the original spine laid down. Ownership signature on the endpaper of "N.W. Ridley Colborne" on the endpaper and "Horace W. Baddle 1859" on the top of the title page. Some light intermittant spotting and staining, but a nice clean copy with wide margins. Garrison-Morton 1693; Carpenter XXXII (2); Einaudi 3668; Goldsmiths’ 18640; Kress B.4701; Mattioli 2207, See Printing and the Mind of Man # 251. The great quarto edition of Malthus' masterpiece, a very important work in the field of economics and a source of Darwin's "idea of 'the struggle for existence'" (PMM) The Reverend[Thomas Robert Malthus FRS (1766 – 1834) was a British scholar, influential in political economy and demography. He has become widely known for his theories concerning population, and its increase or decrease in response to various factors. The six editions of his Principles of Population, published from 1798 to 1826, observed that sooner or later population gets checked by famine, disease, and widespread mortality. The central idea is a simple one: that population expands geometrically while food production grows arithmetically. This edition, though being the second, may be considered as a new work, which Malthus himself also claimed; -it is thoroughly revised and much enlarged (nearly four times the length of the original essay, the title has been changed (the title of the first is merely: "An Essay on the Principle of Population, as it Affects the Future Improvement of Society with Remarks on the Speculation of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and Other Writers") He notes: "In the course of this inquiry, I found that much more had been done, than I had been aware of, when I first published the essay. The poverty and misery arising from a too rapid increase of population, had been distinctly seen, and the most violent remedies proposed, so long ago as the times of Plato and Aristotle. And of late years, the subject had been treated in such a manner, by some of the French economists, occasionally by Montesquieu, and, among our own writers, by Dr. Franklin, Sir James Steuart, Mr. Arthur Young, and Mr. Townsend, as to create a natural surprise, that it had not excited more of the publick attention" (Preface to the second edition, p. IV). "The "Essay" was highly influential in the progress of thought in the early nineteenth-century Europe. "Parson" Malthus, as Cobbett dubbed him, was for many, a monster and his views were often grossly misinterpreted. But his influence on social policy, whether for good or evil, was considerable. The Malthusian theory of population came at the right time to harden the existing feeling against the Poor Laws and Malthus was a leading spirit behind the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834." (PMM 251)

Fine large original drawing by an anonymous artist

[?Paris]. Identified at upper right in contemporary manuscript: "Spontini." ?1803- 1815. Executed in black and white crayon on dark tan paper. 522 x 416 mm. A very accomplished drawing, very likely done from life. Slightly worn; small area of paper reinforcement to lower right corner of verso.. Spontini, who moved to Paris at the end of 1802, came under the patronage of the Empress Josephine as of 1805. His opera, La Vestale, had its first performance on December 15, 1807, by which time the composer was regarded as one of the leading composers in Paris. It is quite likely that the present portrait dates from this period, supported by the apparent age of the subject.

        De la richesse commerciale,

ìThe First Critic of Industrial CapitalismîSISMONDI, J[ean] C[harles] L[eonard Simonde de]. De la richesse commerciale, ou Principes dí??conomie politique, appliqu??s a la l??gislation du commerce. Geneva: Chez J.J. Paschoud, An XI (1803).Scarce first edition of Sismondiís important work. Two octavo volumes. [4], lxxxv, [1, blank], 348; [4], 448 pp.In the original blue paper wrappers with printed paper spine labels (labels defective). Library shelf label at foot of spine. Joints split but firm. A very clean and fresh copy. Uncut and largely unopened. Housed in a red cloth clamshell case.Born in Geneva, the son of a Calvinist clergyman, Sismondi (1773-1842) was ìthe first critic of industrial capitalismî (Blaug). ìSismondiís first venture into economics, the two- volume De la richesse commerciale was intended as a systematic exposition of the ideas of Adam Smith. Yet in it Sismondi also pointed out that he was presenting ëan absolutely newí way of looking at aggregate output changes. Crude arithmetic examples depicted output during a given year as a function of investment during a previous year, and showed how a closed economy differed from an economy with international trade, and how the latter differed when there was an export surplus and an import surplus. Algebraic formulas in his footnotes repeated the same arguments presented arithmetically in the text. But the book was little noticed, and so Sismondiís original efforts produced no contribution to the development of economicsî (The New Palgrave).De la Richesse commerciale ìhas a number of original features, for example, it includes an early statement ascribing the international exchange of goods to differences in factor endowments and factor pricesóEngland, being plentifully endowed with capital, will import labor-intensive goods, such as lace from France, from countries where capital is relatively scarce and wages low. Sismondi here points the way to doctrinal developments that were bought to full fruition by Ohlin in the twentieth century but were overshadowed during the nineteenth century by the Ricardian doctrine of comparative cost, which was primarily designed to demonstrate the gains from tradeî (Spiegel, p. 303).Theocaris describes Sismondi as the only French author of his time who was considerably influenced by Canard, noting that in the introduction to De la richesse commerciale Sismondi ìadmitted that many times in the earlier chapters of his book he had nothing better to do than repeat Canardís ideas. He does not, however, imitate Canard in the use of mathematics except once, ëcar appliquer ce langage ??? une science qui n\'est point exacte c\'est s\'exposer ??? des erreurs continuellesí. His main attempt at mathematical economics is when he tries to show that in both a closed economy and with foreign trade a country, ceteris paribus, will be progressing, declining or stationary according to the level of wagesî (Early Developments in Mathematical Economics (1983), pp. 78ff).Einaudi 5298.         Essay on the Principle of Population

The Economics of PopulationMALTHUS, T[homas] R[obert]. An Essay on the Principle of Population; Or, a view of its past and present effects on Human Happiness; With an Inquiry into our prospects respecting the future removal or mitigation of the evils which it occasions. A new edition, very much enlarged. London: Printed for J. Johnson... by T. Bensley, 1803.Second edition, enlarged and revised. Quarto. viii, [4], 610 pp.Contemporary calf, skillfully rebacked to style and with corners renewed. Spine decoratively tooled in gilt compartments with burgundy morocco gilt lettering label. Endpapers renewed. Occasional light foxing. Title-page with publisher\'s diagonal paper flaw crease. Overall very good.A completely revised and greatly expanded edition of the most influential work on population ever written. Malthus published the first edition of his Essay in 1798, and was apparently unprepared for the torrent of controversy that his ideas provoked. His response to the public outcry was to spend the next five years refining and expanding his theories for this second edition, so much so that \"in its present shape, it may be considered a new work, and I should probably have published it as such, omitting the few parts of the former which I have retained, but that I wished it to form a whole of itself, and not to need a continual reference to the other.\" (preface)Malthus\' basic argument--that population increases geometrically at a greater rate than does the means of subsistence, which increases arithmetically--was one of the earliest modern economic and social theories, and his contention that it would eventually become necessary for society to impose some form of restraint on over-population provided the premise for heated socio-economic debate for almost two centuries.Kress B4701.         The cession of the district of Matavai in the island of Otahaite to Capt. James Wilson for the use of the missionaries sent thither by that society in the ship Duff

1803 - The cession of Matavai to Capt. Wilson. 1803. London. F. Bartolozzi, published for the benefit of the Missionary Society, by W. Jeffrys & Co. 535 mm x 745 mm. Lower margin with strong foxing and soiling, some minor loss; strong colour. A striking image showing Captain James Wilson accepting the island of Matavai (Tahiti) for the use of the London Missionary Society, as a result of their missionary expedition to the Island. In 1795 the LMS was established, plans to send an expedition to Tahiti were shortly put to action and as a result, 18 missionaries under Captain Wilson sailed towards the Pacific; in 1797 King Pomare (c. 1742 – 1803), first king of Tahiti and founder of the Pomare dynasty, granted the travellers the use of Matavai, however tensions soon appeared. As consequence to this, the mission lived until 1809, when the last of the missionaries left for Sidney. Wilson (1760 – 1814) brought the first missionaries aboard the Duff; he became the first to establish a mission in the South Seas. “He took notice of the London Missionary Society and offered his services to captain its ship, the Duff, on a voyage to deliver missionaries to South Pacific Islands” (Hill). The plate is not common; we haven’t been able to locate any having sold at auction (AE).

THE CITY OF NEW YORK IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK, NORTH AMERICA

Springland, near Bristol, Pa.: Published by William Birch [and] William H. Morgan, 100 Arch Street, [Philadelphia], "1st January 1803" [but ca. 1820].. Copper engraving, handcolored. Sheet size: 21 7/8 x 28 5/8 inches. Expertly repaired tears and restoration to blank margin, else very good. A fine example of the third state of "the Birch View with the Picnic Party." "This rendering of New York from across the East River is a companion to William Birch's view of Philadelphia...and was issued by the artist to arouse interest in a projected series of views of New York, which never appeared. Birch explains in his unpublished autobiography...that he visited New York frequently in his endeavor to prepare an iconography of the city...'I took many turns to New York where I met with friendly reception and politeness. I had nearly completed a set of drawings of that city which I meant to publish as a companion Volume to the Philadelphia; but found profits of the undertaking was not equal to the expense of travelling and the support of my family.'" "The Drawing of New-York," wrote Birch in the promotional literature for the view, "is from the opposite shore of the Sound, as it appears from a great eminence, forming a chaste and grand subject, very similar to the choice of subject made use of by the celebrated Salvator Rosa; the Bay is seen, and the opposite bank of the North River over the busy town at sunset, contrasting in the foreground with the quiet grazing of a horse under the wreck of an ancient tree, upon a sequestered lawn on Long-Island." The description was included in a prospectus for the first edition of Birch's Philadelphia views. "In the second state of the engraving, a picnic party was substituted for the white horse, and other changes were made...[The present example is from the third state], similar to the second, but with the imprint of William H. Morgan...in this form the plate was reissued about 1820" - Deák. The view shows a family enjoying a picnic on Brooklyn Heights at a place that gives a nice panoramic view of Manhattan from the southeast and which shows all the major buildings of the City in 1802, the date depicted, beginning with the south end of the Battery on the left. Visible through the masts of the ship on the river is the steeple of Trinity Church (at the west end of Wall Street). Farther to the right are St. Paul's, St. George's, the Dutch Reformed Church, and numerous other prominent features. DEÁK, PICTURING AMERICA 245. PYNE COLLECTION (1912) 29. STAUFFER 2884.
