Crinum Asiaticum / Crinum d'Asie [Asiatic Crinum]

Paris: Imprimerie de Didot jeune, 1802. Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by Lemaire. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's "functional" understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection inLes Liliacéesfrom which this work comes.Les Liliacéesis one of two Redouté masterworks, the other being Les Roses. These works demonstrate the appropriateness of the accolade "Raphael of Flowers", for one is constantly impressed by the exquisite compositional sense and clarity of vision. More than with any other painter, one sees in Redouté's flowers living, breathing beings at their most beautiful moment.Cf. Nissen BBI 1597; cf.Great Flower Books (1990), p 128; cf. Dunthorne p 231; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8747; cf. MacPhaeil, Redouteana, 10.

A Collection of Twenty-five Early American Tavern Licenses and Related Documents from Southern Vermont and Connecticut

Southern New England, 1802. The collection includes licenses for named individuals to operate taverns, public inns, or houses of entertainment; town approbations for tavern keepers; and power of attorney documents. Each item is dated and signed; many feature signatures from the town's Selectmen, Constable, Justice of Peace, Grand Juror, and Civil Authority. The tavern was the center of social and political life in early American communities; the Vermont state constitution was drafted and signed at the Windsor Tavern in 1777, the tavern's proprietor Elijah West features prominently in this collection. Within these documents are character assessments-"We judge that [...] Christopher Martin and Jesse Spafford are fit and suitable persons to keep houses of Public Entertainment" (Woodstock, 1802)- and term limits, as all licenses and approbations must be renewed annually. Though formally worded, documents appear on scraps of paper, often unevenly cut. Several have wax stamps. A fascinating collection that illuminates early American civic procedures as well as broader social and cultural implications. Condition varies, most items creased and browned with age but all legible. Very good.

The Arabian Nights, in five volumes, translated by the Reverend Edward Forster. London, W. Bulmer & Co. for William Miller, 1802.

1802. 8vo. 5 vols. With 24 engr. plates after Robert Smirke. Contemp. full straight-grained blue morocco, Greek key patterned boards, spine gilt in compartments, all edges gilt. First edition of this early translation by Edward Forster (1769-1828), based on the French version of Antoine Galland, which had first appeared between 1704 and 1717. "Galland's translation [...] was quickly translated into English and German. It enjoyed a most remarkable success throughout Europe, perceptible even in children's literature, and contributed significantly to the new image which enlightened Europeans entertained of the Islamic East: after Galland, this was no longer the home of the Antichrist and of accursed heresy, but rather the ever-constant Orient beneath an eternally fair sky, boasting splendid colours and unheard-of wealth, Caliphs, Viziers, and Kadis, harems, fairy-tale princes, fairies and genies, sorcerers and sages, a world of fantastic adventure and outrageous incidents" (cf. Fück, p. 101). - After having studied law and medicine at Balliol and St Mary Hall, Oxford, Forster decided to enter the clergy. He soon "entered into an engagement with a bookseller, William Miller [...], to issue tastefully printed editions of the works of standard authors, illustrated by the best artists of the day" (DNB). The series was inceived with "Don Quixote" in 1801. His "Arabian Nights" were frequently reprinted, seeing five editions by 1854. The present set is distinguished by the beautiful illustrations after Smirke, "whom every person of correct taste will acknowledge to be second to none in this range of art" (I, vii), as well as by the elegantly gilt navy blue morocco bindings. Some occasional spotting due to paper, some slight wear and scuffing, but a beautiful set altogether. Chauvin IV, 239. Brunet III, 1716. Graesse IV, 524. Lowndes/Bohn I, 59. DNB VII, 453. OCLC 5782874. Thieme/B. XXXI, 164 (illustrations).

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM WILLIAM SHORT TO ELBRIDGE GERRY, DISCUSSING SHORT'S RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES].

Paris. April 3, 1802. - [3]pp. on a folded sheet. Old fold lines. Significant ink stain on bottom half of first page, not affecting legibility of text. Minor soiling. Else very good. In a green half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. A fond and lengthy letter from American diplomat William Short to Elbridge Gerry, Founding Father and signer of the Declaration of Independence. William Short (1759- 1849) was an American diplomat who spent much of his political career in France. Beginning in 1784 he served as Jefferson's secretary while Jefferson was U.S. Minister to France; he subsequently served as chargés d'affaires when Jefferson left, overseeing U.S. interests in France. He served as Minister to the Netherlands in 1792, and briefly as Minister to Spain in 1795, after which he returned to France to live with his mistress. In 1802, after nearly twenty years abroad, Short finally took Jefferson's advice and returned to revisit his native land; in the present letter he mentions to Gerry that he is planning to embark in the next month or so. Short was not entirely impressed with America, however, nor it with him - he earned James Madison's lasting enmity when he derided Madison's naive belief that all French directors were good republicans. After a brief return to France in 1808, Short settled in Philadelphia in 1810 and lived out his days as a wealthy man. Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814) served in the Continental Congress and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was an early and vigorous advocate of American Independence, and played a crucial role in the formation of the new United States government, insisting on a bill of rights being added to the new constitution. His name is perhaps most remembered, however ignominiously, in connection with the term "gerrymandering." In his second term as governor of Massachusetts, Gerry redrew district lines to consolidate his party's control in the state senate. Though this was not necessarily a new practice, the name stuck. Gerry ran on the ticket with President Madison in 1812, for Madison's second term as president, and died in office in November 1814. Gerry had served in France on the commission involved in the famous XYZ affair, in which the French attempted to extort bribes from the American commissioners (which inspired fervent anti-French sentiment in the States). It is likely that he became friendly with Short at that time. Short writes that he hopes to see Gerry upon his arrival back in the States, and that he plans to travel extensively upon his return. The letter reads, in part: "I can assure you I shall never forget the sentiments which you inspired [in] me during the short time I had the pleasure of cultivating your acquaintance, & shall always put at an high price every proof of not being forgotten by you. After our separation I wished to hear from you the account of your arrival in America before writing to you, except that of Augt. 27 which I wrote you a few days after my return to Paris from Havre. Having learned that every thing which came from this quarter was at that time liable to suspicion in our country, & supposing it might be peculiarly so under your circumstances, I did not chuse [sic] to obtrude a letter to you until I should first receive yours. Your silence therefore regulated mine. Times have much changed since then my dear sir all over the world; & events which could not have been expected, have taken place almost everywhere. Those which have been exhibited here have been of course, & according to usage, on the great scale & marked in light colors." Short then remarks that he would have thought Gerry an excellent choice for Minister to France, given his experience, and says that he had received some letters and papers mistakenly stating that he had been nominated to that position: ".so that I was receiving letter & compliments on the subject, until the arrival of the frigate which brought the official account of the person designated." He continues: "The account

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM WILLIAM SHORT TO ELBRIDGE GERRY, DISCUSSING SHORT'S RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES]

Paris, 1802. [3]pp. on a folded sheet. Those which have been exhibited here have been of course, & according to usage, on the great scale & marked in light colors." Short then remarks that he would have thought Gerry an excellent choice for Minister to France, given his experience, and says that he had received some letters and papers mistakenly stating that he had been nominated to that position: "...so that I was receiving letter & compliments on the subject, until the arrival of the frigate which brought the official account of the person designated." He continues: "The accounts which we receive here from our country give us the most pleasing view of its prosperity & tranquility. There is nothing which can be more satisfactory to a true American; & I do really believe that it gives him still a more exalted satisfaction when he is in a foreign country than when at home....This mode of feeling I do not suppose peculiar to Americans, but common to all men of all countries. I learned from Mr. Skipweth that you had a good passage out. I have frequently regretted since that I had not continued my voyage with you. The year after you left us was a terrible one to pass here - ruin and desolation hung on the heads of all my friends from that time until the revolution of Brumaire. It was really a most distressing and hopeless scene....At that time I had hopes of being able to arrange my affairs in America by proxy - but every year since has continued to shew the contrary - of course I have every year since been meditating a voyage....The moment is now at hand when I shall experience it, as I am preparing for the voyage. I expect to embark in the month of May. It is yet uncertain at what port I shall land, but wherever it be I shall certainly ere long after my arrival have the pleasure of seeing you, as it is my intention to travel through all the states, at least those north of Virginia. I have so often repented having not visited & made myself acquainted with the different parts of my own country before visiting foreign ones, that I will not fail executing this plan as soon as practicable." The letter is docketed on the verso of the second leaf in Gerry's hand: "Paris letter / Honble Wm Short / rec. April / 8th 1802, ansd. / 21 July 1802."

Égypte. Atlas annexé au mémoire sur la communication de la Mer Rouge à la Méditerranée. [Paris, l'Imprimerie Imperiale], 1802.

1802. Folio (354 x 526 mm). (2) pp., 5 engraved folding maps and plans. In the publisher's original blue marbled wrappers. 187-192 pp. Modern white boards with giltstamped black spine label. Folio (290 x 442 mm). The five-plate atlas to accompany the mémoire regarding the possibility of constructing a modern canal from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea via the Isthmus of Suez, which J.-M. Le Père, chief engineer of the Ponts et Chaussées, would submit to Napoleon in 1803. The plates include a hydrographical map of Lower Egypt and the Isthmus, a plan of the port of Suez, a plan and view of the "Fontaine de Moïse", a synoptic chart of the (supposed) various water levels along the Isthmus, and a plan of the city and ports of Alexandria. Even here, in their earliest publication, dated 1802 on the title page, the plates already bear the numbers under which they would be published in 1809 and 1817 within the monumental "Description de l'Égypte", bearing witness to the accuracy with which the editors had planned their famous work. Indeed, the commission to distil into a publication the enormous amount of data accumulated in Egypt by Napoleon's savants had only been established in February 1802, and the table of contents (on the reverse of the title page) specifies that "ces planches font partie du grand Atlas de l'ouvrage de la Commission d'Égypte, état moderne". - Le Père's mémoire itself was not published at all before it formed part of the "Description": a copy of this first publication, removed from part II: État Moderne, volume 1, is included with this set (it would be published independently, with the atlas, in 1815). - During the 1798 campaign in Egypt, Napoleon's officers had discovered remnants of the ancient "Canal of the Pharaohs", a west-east waterway built under Darius I of Persia that linked the Nile and the Red Sea. Napoleon contemplated the construction of a north-south canal to connect the Mediterranean with the Red Sea, and Le Père was commissioned to investigate the possibility of building such a canal. While the plan was abandoned because it wrongly concluded that the sea levels were different and the waterway would require locks, the report was important as a basis for Ferdinand de Lesseps' successful plans for the Suez Canal many decades later. - Occasional foxing to margins of plates, binding somewhat loosened in places, but in excellent condition altogether. Very rare. Ibrahim-Hilmy 374. OCLC 492528366. Gay 1999.

Veduta Generale della Città e Porto di Livorno
