Joseph Acerbi (1773-1846) Italian explorer and scientist, undertook 1798 a journey through Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Lapland; and the following year he reached North Cape, which no Italian had previously visited. He was accompanied in the latter part of the journey by the Swedish colonel Skiöldebrand, an excellent landscape painter. On his return Acerbi stayed for some time in England, and published his Travels, etc. His account was met with much disapproval in Sweden, and the Swedish government tried to prevent it to be published abroad, however it was translated and spread all over Europe.

Frakturdruck. ADB XXI, 224ff. - Erman-Horn I, 670. - Heinsius II, 975.

- Engraved oval portrait, 2 inches round, on a 5 1/2 x 3 inch sheet with an ornamental border. Light wear. Very good. An interesting image of Haitian leader Toussaint L'Ouverture. This small portrait shows him from the shoulders up. He is standing as if in profile, but looks over his shoulder toward the viewer, giving us essentially a full-face image. He wears a military coat and the look on his face is calm, the portrayal dignified. The caption translates loosely as "Toussaint L'Ouverture disturber of the peace in Domingo." Around the time this portrait was made, Toussaint had added Spanish Santo Domingo to his domains, freed the slaves on that half of the island, and organized a new constitution for St. Domingue which declared himself governor of the island for life. Though he had wide popular support, his government was brief and he was captured by deception during a French invasion led by Le Clerc at Napoleon's direction. He died, a prisoner, in France in 1803. An interesting portrait of the famed Haitian leader, an image which we have not encountered before.

Exlibris, Ebd. etw. beschabt u. fleckig.# First edition of the important precursor of the "Vollkommenen Capellmeisters"; with the rare appendix, the letters to Mattheson.- Mattheson is mainly famous as a music theorist. He was the most abundant writer on performance practice, theatrical style, and harmony of the German Baroque. He is particularly important for his work on the relationship of the disciplines of rhetoric and music.- For example, on pages 127-139, Mattheson analyses an aria by Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739). He ignores the text altogether; in breaking down this aria into its component parts, he applies many of the rhetorical terms and concepts that were now beeing associated more and more with music.- Throughout a bit browned, title with two cut-out names and mounted, flyleaf with mod.         An answer to an address from Charles Brooke, wool-broker, to the electors of the Borough of Chippenham, by Henry Guy, clothier.

Chippenham: printed and sold by J.M. Coombs 1802 - 8vo., 40pp., in a particularly good 20th century panelled calf binding. An excellent copy. First and only edition. This Answer> evidently followed closely on the civil action for a libel heard and determined at the Court of King's Bench on April 28th, 1802, before Mr. Justice Grose. Charles Brooke (1760-1833), 'an eminent wool-broker' in London, had maintained 'an irreproachable reputation', according to Thomas Erskine, his defence counsel, until Henry Guy's alleged libel. In the event, the jury found in favour of the defendant. The case seems to be still of some interest, not only as an example of alleged commercial libel, but also as a portrait of the international wool trade at the turn of the 19th century, in particular with Spain. The case and its ramifications are well analysed by Taylor & Thorne in The History of Parliament: House of Commons, 1790-1820>, III, p.262. 'The basis of Brooke's business was imported Spanish wool which he bought for clothiers on commission from Manuel de Torre, Spanish agent in London. It would seem, however, that - not alone in this - he also engaged in mercantile business on his own account under cover of partnership. His father's firm H.F. Brooke & Company of St. John's Bridge, Bristol, certainly shipped Spanish wool and Brooke did business with west of England clothiers, which connected him with Chippenham. In 1801 he canvassed the borough with corporation support on the 'independent' interest, which brought him into collision with the established clothiers' interest of the Fludyer family: by combining with the other leading interest in the borough, that of the Dawkins family, Brooke drove George Fludyer out of the field, but was opposed by the latter's business associate John Maitland. In October 1801 Brooke quarrelled with Maitland's leading supporter in the borough, Henry Guy, who on 12 Dec. 1801 circularized charges against Brooke of fraudulent dealings in Spanish wool and of conspiring to raise the price, the gist of his arguments being that Brooke had violated his broker's oath by transacting business on his own account. Brooke disparaged this as an election manoeuvre, but lost an action for libel against Guy, 28 Apr. 1802, in which he was defended by Thomas Erskine: while he was able to refute some of the allegations of fraud, the charge of professional malpractice stuck. In consequence Brooke, who was fined £500 by the City, gave up his brokerage, though in pamphlet warfare with Guy up to the eve of the election he argued, with legal advice from William Adam and William Draper Best, that even if fraud were proved, it did not constitute a perjury of his broker's oath, but merely forfeited his broker's bond. The affair did Brooke no great harm: it enabled him to engage in Business on his own account and to expand prodigiously.' Guy's final Answer> was evidently designed to rub Charles Brooke's nose in it.

        The Divina Commedia,

London: Printed by A. Strahan for T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies,, 1802. consisting of the Inferno–Purgatorio–and Paradiso. Near-contemporary red half calf, spines gilt-tooled in compartments, two coloured morocco title labels to each, purple cloth sides with triple gilt rule, marbled endpapers and edges. Engraved frontispiece. Spines a trifle sunned, covers somewhat scuffed and marked, glue residue to tails of spines from removed labels, some very light spotting to early and late leaves only and a little more to frontispiece as expected, but a sound and attractive set in very good condition. Contemporary bookseller's ticket of John Stacy, Bookseller, of Norwich, to front free endpaper of first volume; near contemporary Norfolk ink ownership inscription to each volume; loose bookplate of Francis Augustus Brooks, M.D. laid into the first volume; illustrated bookplates of Howard Murray, O.B.E., to front pastedowns in each volume; loose library plates designating the presentation from Murray to the Fraser Institute Free Public Library of Montreal. There are no library markings to the text. First edition of the first English version of the complete Divine Comedy to be published, which is greatly significant for "assisting to re-establish an audience for Dante, whose reputation had suffered a decline in the previous century" (ODNB). The translator Henry Boyd (1748/9–1832) was a Church of Ireland clergyman. He has stamped his own character on this text with a lengthy introductory preface (as well as a historical essay of his own to add to his translation of Leonardo Bruni's Life of Dante), in which he celebrates Dante as an original genius whose reputation had been unjustly diminished by unimaginative laws of criticism dominated by the French propensity to "cast a damp upon original invention". Interestingly, Boyd attempts to associate the resurgence of Dante with the contemporary rise of radical thought and politics "in this age of enlightened reason and adventurous discovery". Boyd had previously in 1785 published by subscription a two-volume translation of the Inferno only, alongside a specimen of the Orlando Furioso of Ariosto, and this in itself was only the second English translation of the Inferno. This first complete English Dante is scarce in commerce, with nine copies traced at auction.

BL, Leeds & Bristol only on Copac. The Flowers of Literature for 1803, notes that 'the author of the Strolling Player, we understand Mr. Lucas, a young writer of good talents and virtuous intentions, has painted human nature, in most instances, admirably correct; but sometimes injudiciously, in those situations and scenes in which she ought to be screened from the public eye. From such a writer, however, we have, in his future productions, every thing to expect; and we consider the above-mentioned novel as the first emanation of extraordinary talents'. 'William Templeton is no doubt an imaginary character, but from the accuracy with which the author describes the wretchedness of a country company, and the whimsical vicissitudes which it is the lot of a strolling actor to experience, he has, very probably, been personally engaged in many of the adventures recorded in this history.'         The Divina Commedia:

London: by A. Strahan; for T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies,, 1802. consisting of the Inferno–Purgatorio–and Paradiso. Translated into English verse, with preliminary essay, notes, and illustrations, By the Rev. Henry Boyd, chaplain to the right honourable the Lord Viscount Charleville. In three volumes. 3 volumes, octavo (228 x 142 mm). Superbly rebound to contemporary style in full mottled calf, smooth spines divided in compartments with metope-and-pentaglyph rolls, large gilt ornaments in four compartments, green morocco labels, blue sprinkled edges. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Dante by Thomas Stothard. First half-title additionally signed in blue ink by Nanny Moore, April 2, 1850, and in pencil by Hugh Stuart Moore, 1876. Gathering D in vol. I and half-title of vol. III spotted, small ink stain at foot of frontispiece trailing across lower edge but not spreading into text block, a very good copy. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the first half-title "To Joseph Abbot Esqr. as a trifling mark of sincere esteem and friendship from the translator" and signed by Anne J. Boyd on each half-title. The translator Henry Boyd (1748/9–1832), a Church of Ireland clergyman, was the first to publish an English translation of the complete Divine Comedy. "The edition's value was in assisting to re-establish an audience for Dante, whose reputation had suffered a decline in the previous century. It was dedicated to Viscount Charleville, whose chaplain Boyd was until the Irish rising induced him to resign his post" (ODNB). Boyd had previously in 1785 published by subscription a two-volume translation of the Inferno only, with a specimen of the Orlando Furioso of Ariosto, which in itself was only the second English version of the Inferno. Boyd's translation was the version used as captions for John Flaxman's Compositions from the divine poem of Dante Alighieri (1807).

Zeit mit marmorierten Deckelbezügen, je 2 Rückenschildern u. etwas Rückenvergoldung (leicht berieben). Erste Ausgabe. Joseph Acerbi (1773-1846) Italian explorer and scientist, undertook 1798 a journey through Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Lapland; and the following year he reached North Cape, which no Italian had previously visited. Sabin 48 949. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
