Ängelske Sid-Captenens, federmera Predikantens Johan Newtons synnerligen märkwärdiga Rese- och Leswernes-Beskrifning... Pastoren Doctor T. Haweis...

Stockholm: Carl Fr. Marquard, 1802. Small octavo, wear to title-page and final text leaf, contemporary half calf lending-library binding with original borrowing rules pasted to front paste-down, Very uncommon: the first Swedish edition of this series of letters by the English clergyman and former slave-ship owner, John Newton, best known as the author of the hymn "Amazing Grace". The letters are written to Thomas Haweis, co-founder of the London Missionary Society and the editor of the 1799 account of the Duff voyage to Tahiti. After a difficult career as a young man at sea, Newton experienced a conversion in 1748, although for more than a decade he continued his association with slave-ships. It was not until 1764 that Thomas Haweis managed to get Newton the living for Olney in Buckinghamshire, the same year that this work was first published in England (An Authentic Narrative of some Remarkable and Interesting Particulars... Communicated in a series of letters, to the Reverend Mr. Haweis). This Swedish translation is based on a German-language edition of 1791. Becoming a prominent abolitionist, in 1788 Newton published Thoughts Upon the Slave Trade, a horrific account of the Middle Passage. The main text of this work is in the form of a series of "Brefwet" or letters, the first signed 12 January 1763, and the last 2 February 1763. Throughout, there are numerous quotations from the Bible, usually printed in bold, and references to the main locations associated with the slave trade, including notes on Sierra Leone, Antigua and the West Indies. Joints starting but firm, unnumbered final contents page torn with loss and with rather basic paper repair; a worn but not unattractive copy.

Traites de Legislation Civile et Penale

1802. First Edition . BENTHAM, Jeremy. Traites de Legislation Civile et PenaleÂ… Publies en Francois par Et. DumontÂ… dÂ’apres les Manuscrits confies par lÂ’Auteu. Paris: Chez Bossange, 1802. Three volumes. Octavo, contemporary full tree calf, gilt-decorated spines, red and black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. $2800.First edition of this seminal work on penal reform and legislation in general, in full contemporary tree calf gilt. The first of BenthamÂ’s works to be edited by Dumont, a Swiss writer he met and befriended in Paris; Dumont edited and translated many of BenthamÂ’s works and acted, in effect, as his literary agent. This book consists partly of material by Bentham himself, some of which was originally written in French, and partly a summary by Dumont of BenthamÂ’s ideas, including a Memoire in French of the Panopticon. It was this work that more than any other established BenthamÂ’s reputation and made his ideas famous on the Continent, in Latin America and in England. “The great object of Mr. BenthamÂ’s life was the improvement of legislation and jurisprudenceÂ… Mr. BenthamÂ’s principal work was first published in French in 1802Â… [According to a contemporary review:] ‘It embraces almost every thing that is important in the science of human nature, and not only touches upon all the higher questions of government and legislation, but includes most of the abstract principles of ethics and metaphysics, and professes to delineate those important rules by which the finest speculations of philosophy may be made to exert their influence on the actual condition of society…” (Allibone I, 167-168). With half titles in all volumes. Owner signatures, contemporary gift inscription to half title of Volume I.Text generally clean. Only minor rubbing to extremities of contemporary calf-gilt bindings.

Paris: Marguerite Chollet, [1802]. Quarto, modern half red morocco gilt. $3000.1802 edition of PronyÂ’s Rapport on the ‘MachineÂ’ of Marly—“considered a wonder of the world at the time”—constructed to pump water from the Seine to Versailles and inaugurated in 1684 with Louis XIV in attendance, a rare presentation copy inscribed in French on the title page, “Donné par lÂ’Auteur,” followed by the authorÂ’s initials, with three large engraved folding plates.“The ‘machineÂ’ of Marly was a civil engineering marvel located at the bottom of the hill of Louveciennes, on the banks of the Seine about 12 kms from Paris. Louis XIV had it constructed to pump water from the river to his chateaux of Versailles and Marly. The construction lasted 7 years and was inaugurated in the presence of the King in June 1684. It was considered a wonder of the world at the time, and may have been the largest system of integrated machinery ever assembled to that dateÂ… The original Louis XIV Machine included not just an enormous structure on the river itself, but sprawled 600 meters all the way up the hill, comprising pumping stations, holding tanks, reservoirs, pipes and an intricate system of mechanical linkages to power pumps on the hill from the waterwheels belowÂ… Pumping at full capacity, it could add over a million gallons in 24 hours to the Marly reservoirs. Nothing of the original Machine system has survived except for the Aqueduct” (Dunlop, Louis XIV and the Creation of Versailles). This work contains papers on the water-pump at Marly, which supplied water to the castle of Marly, as well as the fountains of Versailles. The various ‘machinesÂ’ discussed are those of Lagiasse, Campmas, Bralled and White. Preceded by the 1794 first edition. Text in French: containing hydromechanic calulations. With three engraved folding plates silked, at rear: containing diagrams of three of the machines at Marly. A fine copy.

        Musen-Almanach, für das Jahr 1802.

in der Cotta'schen Buchhandlung, 1802. Poetry, including lyric poetry by the two editors and such others as "Inhumanus," "Sophie B[ernhardi]," "Bonaventura," "Mnioch," and "Novalis." Bonaventura was the pseudonym of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Novalis the pseudonym of Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg; the latter's two poems were from his as then unpublished novel, Heinrich von Ofterdingen. This is => the first issue of Schlegel & Tieck's literary annual, patterned on the original Musen-Almanach (1796-1800) of Schiller, to which both were contributors. They broke with Schiller's adherence to the "old" and championed Romanticism in their publication. => All of the poems are early entrants in the German Romantic movement. Besides being the title of both those annuals, "Musen-Almanach" is a long-established genre term for these literary annuals published in Germany from ca. 1770 to the middle of the 19th century.

Autograph Letter Signed, Paris, March 21, 1844, to Joseph-Louis -Elzéar Ortolan

octavo, 1 ½ pages, neatly inscribed in ink, in fine, clean and legible condition. Joseph-Louis-Elzéar Ortolan (1802-1873) was appointed to the chair of comparative criminal law at the University of Paris in 1836.The letter discusses their mutual interest in penal reform - notably, the modifications just made by the Diet of Hungary and mentions the latest work by Carl Joseph Anton Mittermaier (1787-1867), Mitermaier was an advocate of reform in the German criminal procedure and in prison discipline, the work which de Tocqueville refers is Italienische Zustände (Heidelberg:1844), embodies the result of his observations during frequent visits to Italy. The Hungarian theme is of particular interest: some Hungarian travelers reached the United States at the same time as Alexis de Tocqueville ... Sándor Bölöni Farkas (1795-1842) published his Journey in North America (Útazas Észak Amerikában) in 1834, a year before de Tocqueville's Democracy in America appeared. The former work analyzed Jacksonian democracy in contrast to the oppressive regime of Prince Metternich. Coincidentally de Tocqueville and Bölöni Farkas met in Charlestown where the prison logbook preserves the memory of their respective visits on the same day in 1831. It will be remembered that de Tocqueville undertook his journey to America upon being granted a commission from the French government to study the penal system in the United States as a possible guide for French prison reform, along with his friend Gustave de Beaumont. Their jointly authored report, On the Penitentiary System in the United Sates and Its Application in France, appeared in 1833. American National Biography, vol. 21, pp., 715-717

Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, [1802]. Folio, original separate parts (as issued), first violin part and first viola part respined. $3200.First edition, in parts, of BeethovenÂ’s String Quintet op. 29, fully engraved. The String Quintet op. 29 “quite definitely points to the future and gives and indication of what is to come after 1802. This is one of the transitional works which lies squarely across style boundaries. Few of BeethovenÂ’s works flow as smoothly and easily as the quintetÂ’s first movement; its melodies move from cadence to cadence with a quality of repose that is delightful. The lyric, florid adagioÂ… is a charming inspiration worthy of comparison with the best works of Mozart. [In] the third and fourth movements we see the Beethoven of the future” (Scherman and Biancolli, 206-207). Kinsky-Halm, 70. Each part with faint owner inkstamp. First violin part with 18th-century owner signature of W. Brand. An extremely good copy, handsomely boxed.

FEDERALIST, On The New Constitution. By Publius. Written in 1788. To Which is Added, Pacificus, On the Proclamation of Neutrality. Written in 1793. Likewise, The Federal Constitution, With all the Amendments. Revised and Corrected.

New York: by George F. Hopkins, 1802. 2 volumes. A Rare and Very Important Edition. Only the second printing of the great work. 8vo, handsomely bound in the original tree calf, the respined to style with gilt bands, small gilt tools, and red lettering labels, quite expertly and skillfully accomplished. viii, 317; v, 351, [1] ad. A unusually fine and very handsome set withal. This is an exceptional copy in that it remains essentially entirely free of the browning and foxing that is normal to the printing of this edition. It is then very rare thus, and in a most desirable contemporary state, fresh, clean and crisp, unpressed and with the backs handsomely restored to style. ONE OF THE GREATEST WORKS IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN POLITICAL, LEGAL AND PHILOSOPHIC THOUGHT. AN ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AND VERY EARLY PRINTING, ONLY THE SECOND, AND WITH ADDITIONS INCLUDING THE CONSTITUTION AND THE AMENDMENTS, AS WELL AS A SERIES OF ARTICLES BY HAMILITON WRITING UNDER THE PSEUDONYM "PACIFICUS". HERE PRESENTED WITH THE FOUNDING PAPERS OF OUR NATIONAL GOVERNMENT. "The Federalist is the most important work in political science that has ever been written, or is likely ever to be written in the United States. It is...the one product of the American mind that is rightly counted among the classics of political theory." The Federalist stands beside the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution itself among all the sacred writings of American political history. It has a quality of legitimacy, of authority, and authenticity that caused Thomas Jefferson to say of it, "appeal is habitually made by all, and rarely declined or denied by any" as to the "genuine meaning" of the Constitution. George Washington, writing to Alexander Hamilton in the summer of 1788, said: "When the transient circumstances and fugitive performances which attended this crisis shall have disappeared, that work will merit the notice of posterity, because in it are candidly and ably discussed the principles of freedom and the topics of government--which will be always interesting to mankind so long as they shall be connected in a civil society." "Its fame derives from the whole course of American history. It is a sign, as it were, of the prodigious success of the Constitution, which as it has endured and evolved over the generations, has called attention ever more insistently to the men who, having helped write it, first explained it. In bursts of brilliance it is not only an analysis and defense of our Constitution but an exposition of certain enduring truths that provide an understanding of both the dangers and the delights of free government. It mixes candor and hope, realism and idealism in a message to all friends of liberty. No happiness without liberty, no liberty without self-government..." (Rossiter 1961). One of the most important pieces of early American writing. Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay originally published these articles to explain the principle of, and to argue the propriety of adopting, the recently devised Constitution. This edition was the last issued during Hamilton's lifetime, and the last with which any of the three authors had any involvement..

1802. First Edition . (TROY) LECHEVALIER, Jean-Baptiste. Recueil des Cartes, Plans, Vues et Medailles, pour Servir au Voyage de la Troade. Paris: Dentu, 1802. Folio (10 by 13-1/2 inches), contemporary full brown mottled calf sympathetically rebacked and recornered, original black morocco spine labels laid down, raised bands, marbled endpapers. $4200.First edition of the plate volume to illustrate Le Chevalier’s archaeological expedition in search of Troy, with 37 engraved plates and maps on 29 sheets, 16 double-page or folding, with plates of Corfu, Zante, Ithaca and Athens, in addition to fine views of the plain of Troy. This is Le Chevalier’s definitive work on Troy. “Le Chevalier’s theory as to the actual location of Troy was incorrect, but the work nevertheless marks the beginning of modern archaeological exploration in the area” (Blackmer). To reach the site, Le Chevalier traveled to Constantinople via the Ionian islands, Athens and the Aegean islands, which are represented in this atlas as well. Issued separately to accompany the third edition of Le Chevalier’s text in three octavo volumes, this atlas volume is often found by itself (Blackmer owned only the atlas). Text in French. Blackmer 994. Atabey 698. Maps and plates clean and fine, with crisp impressions. Some rubbing to covers of contemporary calf, nicely rebacked and restored. An excellent copy of this scarce and finely illustrated work.

The Book of Nature. A discourse on some of those instances of the power, wisdom and goodness of God, which are within the reach of common observation. ... To which is added, The Duty of Mercy, and Sin of Cruelty to Brutes; taken chiefly from Dr. Primatt's Dissertation. Fourth edition, etc.

Boston [Mass.]: Printed by Samuel Hall, no. 53, Cornhill, 1802. Duodecimo, [2]-47 pages. The first American edition; fourth edition overall, from the third published in England (first printed in 1792). John Toogood was a theologian concerned with the parallel revelations of creation - revealed as the 'book of nature' - and scripture. Many theologians were placing significant or all emphasis on the Bible, which in Toogood's estimation was evident in the cruel treatment of animals. He thought a crime against the least of God's creations was a crime against God. The author of the second work, Humphrey Primatt, "was a clergyman who wrote on moral issues in natural philosophy... His only known work, A Dissertation on the Duty of Mercy and Sin of Cruelty to Brute Animals (1766), attacks what the author sees as unnecessary cruelty to animals, including that inflicted through hunting and other sports. His argument opens from the position that justice is a universal rule, stemming from God. Therefore, as animals are created by God, justice must extend to them as well." (Oxford Index). Contemporary marbled wrappers; free front endpaper clipped likely removing an owner's name, but the name "B Woodworth's 1805" remains. Generally very good. [OCLC locates thirteen copies].

THÉORIE DES JARDINS, Ou L'Art Des Jardins De La Nature.

Paris: Panckoucke 1802. The enlarged and partially revised second edition, which includes significant material supplementing the original version of 1776. The newly added preface (128 pages) provides, among other things, an extended commentary on writings on garden design published since the first edition. There are also 75 pages of end notes and a new 100 page section on trees, consisting primarily of a "Tableau Dendrologique" listing the various features of over 1000 varieties of trees. Morel's THEORIE, following shorter works by Girardin and Watelet, presented the most thorough treatise on the new theories of natural garden design which dominated French taste at the end of the 18th century. It was also the first treatise on garden design in the natural style (French or English) to have been written by a professional rather than an amateur. Morel's practical experience is evident throughout, which may help account for the high esteem in which the book was held by French landscape gardeners far into the nineteenth century. Drawing heavily on Whately's OBSERVATIONS ON MODERN GARDENING, Morel rejected the formal symmetry of classical French gardens in favor of the picturesque and "natural" style associated with the English. He did not, however, actually visit England and its gardens until after the publication of the first edition, and the comments he added to this edition are the first to reflect first-hand experience of the places Whately had described. All these additions make this the generally preferred edition for purposes of study. Ganay 98. Two volumes, 8vo (21 x 14 cm); (viii) + cxxviii + 234 + (1, errata), (iv) + 340 + (2, errata) pp. + engraved frontispiece. Original plain blue paper wraps with printed spine labels; extremities rubbed; last three leaves of volume one stained; some margin soiling of first two leaves of volume two; a wide-margined copy with text with edges untrimmed. .

The New Jamaica Almanack, and Register, Calculated to the Meridian of the Island, For the Year or our Lord 1802. (Being the Sixth after Bissextile, or Leap Year.

Kingston: Printed by Stevenson and Aikman 1802 - 12mo (in 6s), 149 x 92 mms. pp. [iv], 189 [190 - 191 continuation of Index, 192 note and errata, 193- 204 tables, followed by lower corner of one leaf, followed by 11 leaves of notes mostly in pencil, and mostly of names, with occasional sums and calculations, bound in contemporary wallet style sheepskin, with gilt borders on covers, and the name in purple ink of "William Bowyer/ Woollard/ 1887/ June 8," with more purple ink on the title-page and on the verso of the preceding leaf. One of the publishers, William Aikman fled from America during the 1776 Revolution and set up business with another refugee, David Douglass. Thomas Stevenson joined the firm in 1796. One of the most striking features of their almanacs was the use of Hebrew type, page 15 being a "Kalendar Of Months, Sabbaths, and Holidays, which the Hebrews or Jews observed and keep, for the years 5562 and 5563 of the Creation." Aikman and Douglass began incorporating details about Jewish worship from the beginning their partnership. Almost as striking is the number of Masonic lodges to be found in Jamaica, with 18 listed on page 178; the first Lodge was instituted in 1738. The most interesting feature of this almanac is, however, the large number of names recorded in pencil on the blank leaves at the end of the volume. "Mingo" was for example a common name given to slaves, as well as "Sambo," both of which appear in pencil on one of the leaves. The literature on slave names in the West Indies is vast, and an experienced scholar or genealogist would probably find much documentary detail about slaves in the West Indies in the early 19th century. Parliament abolished the slave trade in the British Empire in 1807 (slavery itself was not abolished until 1833). As for the provenance, I would assume that the 1887 ownership is that of a William Bowyer who lived in Woollard in the Chew Valley in England. However, Woollard also appears in England as a surname. The handwriting appears to be that of a juvenile. The William Bowyer(s) known to most booksellers are the two William Bowyers, father (1663 – 1737) and his son (1699 – 1777). A creative bookseller or scholar could doubtless find a connection between the 19th century owner of the 1802 Jamaica Almanack and the distinguished 18th century printers. The only copy that I have located is in the New York Historical Archives; this copy is described as "186, [12] pages, [1] folded leaf of plates : map ; imperfect: missing p. 5-8. Mss. notations throughout." [Attributes: Hard Cover]
