Parma: Reale Stamperia [i.e., Bodoni], 1802. First edition. Wrappers. Fine/The principle non-Jewish Hebrew philologist of his time, De Rossi took the essentially progressive step of studying the Hebrew Bible and its rabbinical commentaries as a body of literature. He collected and collated textual variants to biblical passages, and made several important studies of Hebrew typography. Posted at the University of Parma, he developed a relationship with the printer Giambattista Bodoni, and gave Bodoni guidance in designing the very first types of several languages (Coptic, Georgian, Yiddish, Tibetan and others). The Historical Dictionary of Jewish Authors and their Works, printed by Bodoni, compiles a vast objective catalogue of Hebrew literature, with author biographies and minute publications data, which led directly to the later achievements of Leopold Zunz and the Wissenschaft des Judentums movement. David Amram wrote (in "The Makers of Hebrew Books in Italy," p. 23) " Giambernardo de Rossi of Parma ... is to be reckoned among those righteous strangers within the gates whom the Jews should hold in affectionate remembrance..... With scholar's care and lover's patience, this noble Christian sought the cradle books of the Hebrew presses, and he has left a lasting memorial..... Octavo (23 cm); 2 volumes, viii, 192; 170, [2] pages. List of author's works at the end of volume 2 present. Unsophisticated copy in publisher's pink marbled wraps, with original paper label on spine. Edges untrimmed. Pages largely unblemished. A bit of sun bleaching to spine, but otherwise a pristine copy as it was issued from the press. Reference: Broooks, 881.

Tulipa Gesneriana var. Luteo-rubra / Tulipe des Jardins var. Jaune-rouge [Yellow-red variety Gesner's Tulip] [Pl. 477]

Paris: Imprimerie de Didot jeune, 1802-16. Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by Lemaire. 20 3/8 x 13 3/8 inches. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's "functional" understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Liliacées from which this work comes. Les Liliacées is one of two Redouté masterworks, the other being Les Roses. These works demonstrate the appropriateness of the accolade "Raphael of Flowers", for one is constantly impressed by the exquisite compositional sense and clarity of vision. More than with any other painter, one sees in Redouté's flowers living, breathing beings at their most beautiful moment. Cf. Nissen BBI 1597; cf.Great Flower Books (1990), p 128; cf. Dunthorne p 231; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8747; cf. MacPhaeil, Redouteana, 10.

        Plate 287 - Phalangium Ramosum

Paris 1802 - Pierre-Joseph Redouté A selection from Les Liliacées Stipple engravings with original hand color Paris: 1802-1816 21” x 14” Some discoloration around the edges The unequalled botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté occupies a central position in the development of European flower painting. Redouté had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, a testament to his greatness as an artist. Les Liliacées was Redouté's largest and most ambitious work and is generally considered his masterpiece, arguably rivaled only by Les Roses. Produced under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, for whom Redouté worked as botanical artist at her estate at Malmaison, these pristine examples represent landmark works in the field of flower illustration. The title Les Liliacées is misleading, as the work was of a much broader scope, including representatives of the lily, amaryllis, iris, orchid, and other families. The plates were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method that the artist himself perfected when he was unsatisfied with the effects garnered by traditional copper-plate engraving. As Redouté shrewdly observed, the delicacy and subtle elegance of his compositions could only be captured using a printing method equally fine. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redouté provided. Les Liliacées records the plants of the lily family, and related flowers, that Josephine collected for her gardens at Malmaison. Redouté's small drawings, placed at the bottom of the main illustrations, record the anatomical features of each species so that each flower could be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection. In each illustration, as in his series Les Roses, the flowers are classical "portraits" which lack backgrounds or settings. The regal simplicity of the compositions allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the beauty and delicate complexity of the plants themselves. Redoutés's work represents a uniquely harmonious blend of scientific precision and supremely delicate rendering.

Autograph letter signed to Dawson Turner

Cambridge, 1802. Donn, James (1758-1813). Autograph letter signed to Dawson Turner (1775-1858). 2 ? 1/2 pages. Cambridge, 14 December 1802. 217 x 191 mm. Tiny lacunae in both leaves not affecting text, otherwise fine. From English botanist James Donn, curator of the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens from 1790 until his death and author of Hortus Cantabrigensis (1796 and later editions), to fellow botanist Dawson Turner, author of several botanical works including Synopsis of British Fuci (1802) and Botanist?s Guide through England and Wales (1805), and father-in-law of William Jackson Hooker. Donn and Turner were evidently in the habit of exchanging botanical specimens with one another; in his letter Donn acknowledges the receipt of a ?tin box? from Turner and states that while he ?has only time, presently, to send you the Carex stricta, depauperata and clandestina,? he will soon ?send you a pacquet of seeds for your garden.? Since he knows that Turner habitually corresponds with German botanists, Donn asks him "if you will take the trouble when you write to request of them to send you seeds of such things as they have to spare but particularly the seeds of grasses. They have no occasion to be very nice in selecting them, as many times the most common sorts are acceptable and if I have them before it is only throwing them aside . . . I have added at bottom a list of a few things I want." Under his ?List of wants? Donn enumerated the following species: Milium lendigerum (i.e. Gastridium ventricosum or nitgrass); Agrostis spica venti (sweet bentgrass); Aira canescens (gray hairgrass); Bromus racemosus (bald brome); Galium anglicum (Lamarck?s bedstraw) and Centaurea solstitialis (yellow star-thistle).

Parisiis, J.B. Garnery, 1802. Large-folio (560 x 360 mm). pp. viii, 218, with 50 engraved plates (by Pierre Joseph Redouté). Contemporary blind stiff boards, spine with gilt-lettered black label. "Two folio editions of this work were published in 1802, of which this is the large paper. The small paper folio, according to Nissen, has 269 pages" (Cat. Redoutéana, pp. 44-45 ). Candolle in his 'Memoires' gives a charming picture of the composition of the work with Desfontaines: "Tous deux, aux coins de sa cheminee, nous passions nos matinees, lui à achever sa 'Flore Atlantique' et moi à decrire mes astragales; nous consultions reciproquement sur les objects qui exigeaient des observations delicates". "All of these publications have retained their scientific importance not in the least because of the exact and informative drawings by Redouté. The same is true of A.P. De Candolle's botanical monographs 'Astragalogia'(1802) and 'Strophanthus' (1803). Both these books are now collector's items: the large paper edition of the former as well as all copies of the latter are very rare" (Cat. Redoutéana p. 18). All the magnificent plates are after drawings by P.J. Redouté, engraved by Plée, Tardieu, a.o. A fine uncut copy. Stafleu & Cowan 984; Nissen BBI, 319.

This very rare map belongs to a never finished project for the atlas of the so called Società Calcografia, a simple commercial trade realized by the two main Venetian publishers of the XVIII century, Antonio Zatta and Giuseppe Antonio Remondini. The term Società Calcografica has been deduced from the map of the world, which is part of the collection and bears in the lower cartouche the French writing ?à Venise Chez la Societè Chalcographique 1799?. As already stated, the project was never finished for no atlas containing these maps has ever been listed in any bibliography. Very likely, then, the maps have been sold individually, or maybe as part of smaller, custom collections. The maps of the collection derive from Paolo and Francesco Santini?s plates, used by Remondini in his 1782/4 ?Atlas Universelle?, and from the plates of Antonio Zatta?s ?Nuovo Atlante?, published in 1796. Santini?s maps have been beautifully enriched, using the system of small, masked plates which can be perceived through the platemarks on the paper, with great cartouches according to the classical style of Zatta and have been probably engraved by the members of his staff, Pasquali, Zuliani and Pitteri. The cartouches bear very often historical descriptions and maybe the maps have been realized to depict the great geographic changes of the peninsula during the Napoleonic period. The modern bibliography Terre di Langobardia describes some of the maps depicting the Repubblica Cisalpina, presenting them as part of Remondini?s ?Atlas très Nouveau?, which was printed starting from 1800. In our opinion, the two publishers worked together to the realization of the project until Antonio Zatta died (1804), and the complete atlas was never finished because Giuseppe Antonio Remondini also died in 1811. I personally know 61 maps which were part of the project. Copper engraving, fine hand color, in excellent condition. Venezia Venice 670 495

Leipzig, Industrie-Comptoir, (1802-1817). Parts 1-10 (of 12, bound in 1 volume). Large 4to (312 x 255mm). With 50 (of 60) beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Recent half calf, gilt ornamented spine (preserving old label). The rarest of the great iconographies on roses. Of the two famous botanical collections formed last century, the Plesh and the de Belder collection, the Plesh collection did not have a copy of the present work and the de Belder collection only had parts 1-6. Stock, in his famous bibliography on roses, published in 1984, could not find a library with more than 10 parts. The reason is that Roessig had died after part 10 and that parts 11 and 12 were continued by C.F. Waitz, most probably in a very small edition. The excellent plates, some printed in red and green, were engraved by Louise von Wangenheim. Each part has five plates and 12 pages of text, only part 7 has 16 pages and part 9 20 pages. This beautifully produced work on roses was only preceded by Mary Lawrance's 'A Collection of Roses' London 1799. Roessig condemns the work of his predecessor for the 'inaccuracy of her botanical draughtsmanship' (Henrey II, p. 580). In turn, Redouté criticized Roessig for lack of botanical accuracy. Some slight foxing to the text. Stafleu & Cowan 9429; Stock 2456.

London: "... by F. Jukes No. 10 Howland Street and by A. Robertson Columbian Academy Liberty Street New York", 1802. Hand finished colour aquatint engraved by Francis Jukes. 16 x 22 3/8 inches. Lovely colour aquatint view of Passaic Falls in New Jersey by a noted British artist: one of the earliest views in New Jersey. This view is one of a series of four views executed by the British artist Alexander Robertson during his visit to the United States in 1798, each engraved in London by Francis Jukes. Deák notes that Passaic Falls was "one of the major natural wonders in America that beckoned early artists" and praises the view, which shows a lone fisherman in the foreground, dwarfed by the vertical walls of stone next to the falls, with the rushing torrent in the background.         Expose des temperatures. . . .Inscribed to Giovanni Fabroni

Versailles. Chavassieu-d'Audebert. Versailles: Ph.-D. Pierres; Paris: Desenne . . . , 1802. Magenta paste paper boards, printed label on front cover, light rubbing & wear. Minor foxing, a few light stains, tear in front free endpaper. Very good copy, with the author's presentation inscription on the front endpaper: "A l'illustre Professeur Monsieur Fabroni de la part de l'Auteur." The recipient was most likely Italian physicist Giovanni Valentino Mattia Fabbroni (1752-1822); see DSB. First Edition. Chavassieu-d'Audebert's charts present a thorough analysis in tabular form of the effects of temperature, atmospheric conditions and terrain on humans, animals and plants. The first chart displays the effects of temperature and humidity on health: for example, rainy weather was said to promote chronic fevers, epileptic attacks and paralysis in humans, and blight in crops. The second chart organizes temperature and climate information by month and season, describing effects on agriculture and health of various types of years (hot/dry, cold/wet, cold/dry, etc.). The third chart presents the phases of the moon and how they affect health, the effects of climate and terrain on native human, animal and plant populations, and a breakdown of the human species by geographical type.

Milano dalla Stamperia di San Zeno 1802 16° 3 volumi Pagine X + 245 + 265 + 264 Legatura coeva in mezza pelle marrone. Piatti marmorizzati. Titolo e ricchi fregi oro al dorso. Tagli spruzzati. Filini.
