      - 120 pp. 8vo, cont. half-calf & marbled boards (spine slightly rubbed), red morocco lettering piece on spine, gilt cipher of Eugène de Beauharnais on covers. Paris: Didot Jeune, An IX [1801]. First edition of this rare Salon commentary. Landon (1760-1826), prominent art critic, historian, and popularizer of contemporary art, wielded great influence over the French art world in the early 19th century. He served as curator of paintings at the Louvre and was the personal painter to Charles Ferdinand, duc de Berry. Three of Landon's paintings were exhibited at various Salons, including the present one. Landon also wrote and edited more than 100 works, including important histories of art, biographies of artists, and numerous catalogues and inventories of collections such as that of the Palais du Luxembourg. In this work, Landon presents the commentaries of anonymous critics, as well as his own, on that year's Salon. They describe a wide range of artworks, occasionally expressing acerbic opinions on the items displayed ("I will not comment on the attempts of these two young artists?to make clear the abuse of derived principles, in a good school, but poorly felt and falsely applied, and the danger of exhibiting in public the first fruits of a talent which is not yet refined"-page 20). The critics remark on works by artists and architects such as Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard, François Gérard (his portrait of the Empress Joséphine), Antoine-Denis Chaudet, Charles-Louis Corbet, Alphonse-Henri Guy de Gisors, Jean Broc, and many others, both fledgling and established. Nice tall copy, with the cipher of Eugène de Beauharnais (1781-1824), politician, military commander, and son of the Empress Joséphine. Unidentified ownership stamp on title-page. First five leaves of text with small restorations, not touching the text. WorldCat locates one copy in North America. ? N.B.G., Vol. 29, cols. 355-58 (Landon).

Einband leicht berieben. Oberes Kapital sauber restauriert, sonst gut erhalten. - Poggendorff II, 952; Ferchl 508; Hirsch/H. V, 327 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dorothea; or, A Ray of New Light. 2 vols. FIRST DUBLIN EDITION.

Dublin: Printed by Thomas Burnside, for P. Wogan, H. Colbert, . 1801 - Half titles; C3 (p31-p32) vol. II is torn in half across the middle of the page; while both halves are still present, in a curious piece of mis-binding, the upper portion of the leaf is in the correct position, while the lower half is to be found between C4 & C5, p149 vol. I, though legible, has some printing flaws. Contemp. full mottled calf, maroon & black leather labels; boards sl. bowing, v. sl. rubbing. The London edition, also 1801, was in three volumes; this Dublin edition is in BL only on Copac. Dorothea was published in an anthology of anti-Jacobin novels in 2005, where, unlike the BL's anonymous copy, it was attributed to 'Mrs Bullock'. The work was intended to counter the prevailing trends in late 18th and early 19th century literature for radicalism and social upheaval. It directly challenges the writing of William Godwin, quoting him in several places in an attempt to undermine his political philosophy. The main protagonist, Dorothea, is portrayed as naive, misguided and self-destructive for her devotion to modern thinking. The novel is an anti-radical polemic: "If you are a modern philosopher, the best which I can offer is, for your speedy deliverance from the energetic sublimity of your incomprehensible dogmas; but if you are . a pupil of the old school, be contented, I beseech you, to thank Heaven for your ignorance, and . shut your eyes against the delusions of that ignus fatuus the NEW LIGHT!"

M.F. Drouhin, Paris 1801 - (14 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches). 7, [1]pp, plus 31 aquatint plates printed in colours and finished by hand. Some foxing. Early half calf and marbled paper covered boards, spine decorated in blind and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers Provenance: Cornelius Coolidge (early signature); Lemuel Stanwood (signature) Rare collection of French portraits printed in colors, including an important image of Franklin after Charles Philippe Vanloo. Beautifully engraved in colours and finished by hand, these portraits show the mastery of the process by the best of the French engravers of the period. Among the subjests are Rousseau, Descartes, Mirabeau, Malsherbes, Buffon, Montesquieu, Raynal, Diderot, Moliere and more. However, the most intriguing of the portraits is the one of Benjamin Franklin. The Franklin engraving was done after an original portrait by the famed French painter, Charles Philippe Vanloo (sometimes spelled Van Loo). The original portrait was done while Franklin resided in Paris in the years during and after the American Revolution, and is now in the collection of the American Philosophical Society. Sellers asserts that it is "beyond question a life portrait," done between 1777 and 1785. In Vanloo's original portrait Franklin wears a fur coat. In this engraving, however, the fur coat has been replaced by a simpler cloth coat. Franklin wears glasses, his hair is long and gray, and he has a slight smile on his face. In the caption below the image, his name is spelled Francklin. "The substitution of a simple gray coat for the fur-trimmed costume of the original was undoubtedly in deference to revolutionary feeling" (Sellers). This print was engraved after Vanloo's portrait by the noted French engraver, Pierre-Michel Alix, who was known for his portraits of leading French citizens and prominent personalities. On the Franklin portrait, see: Sellers, Benjamin Franklin in Portraiture, p.394. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Méthode abrégée pour accorder le clavecin

chez Lacloye, Libraire, Rue du Pourtour-Gervais, no. 13, et rue du Coq-Honoré, no. 120. Vendémaire an neuf : 1801 : Paris : 8vo, A8 (blank A8), 8 leaves, pp. 13 [3] (last 3 pages blank). Woodcut or cast device on title; printed on blue tinted paper. : An early manual specifically dealing with piano tuning as well as harpsichord tuning. The first plate shows the keyboard of both instruments, the second the piano wrest plank strung with steel and copper. The Blanchet family had been making harpsichords since the end of the seventeenth century and some of the first pianos to be made in Paris, in the 1790s. The firm's relationship with the court began in the 1740s with the building of a harpsichord for Mesdames à Fontevrault and with increased repair work sent by Christophe Chiquelier, keeper of the King's instruments; during the 1750s the firm became 'facteur des clavessins du Roi'.The advertisement on the verso of the titlepage offers the new strings made of twisted silk recently invented by Baud in Versailles for violins, violas, cellos and guitars. This edition is located by OCLC at the BNF, Bern, Leipzig, Staatliches Institut for Musikforschung, Newberry and Eastman School of Music; the 1818 edition is at the BL and NYPL.

Thermidor An 9 : [1801] : Paris : 4to: 69 leaves, [4] pages of prelims, and Feuilles 1-34, each of two leaves except no. 3 with 3 leaves. : This work brings together Monge's work on analytical geometry; his later work was simply a development of these ideas applied to new examples. 'In Feuilles d'Analyse ...Monge assembled, along with general considerations regarding the theory of surfaces and the geometric interpretation of partial differential equations, monographs on about twenty families of surfaces defined by their mode of generation. (Taton p. 304).I have not been able to locate definitively a set of the 1795 Feuilles listed by Taton, the only lead is a 2 volume compilation in the Bibliothèque National, described as 'Feuilles d'analyse de Monge M. de Prony' without a date. OCLC locates copies of the present edition in North America at Huntington, Berkeley, Library of Congress, Smithsonian, Chicago, NY Public and Oklahoma.
