MANUSCRIPT - JAPANESE IMPERIAL FOOD OFFERINGS AND DECORATIONS OF ROOM DIVIDERS].
1800. The manuscript comprises 34 pp. with 11 images of food offerings for "Gosekku", the five annual imperial court ceremonies, and 22 images of different decorations of room divider screens. Beautifully hand-coloured on fine paper, accompanied by hand-written descriptions in Japanese, bound in the traditional Japanese style. Contemporary blue decorated paper, worn and some paper missing on the back cover. Internally in fine condition, only partly with some light staining at lower margin, no wormholes. The five annual ceremonies (Gosekku) were introduced into the Japanese Imperial calendar more than 1000 years ago. The five festivals are: Jinjitsu on January 7th; Hinamatsuri (girl's day) on March 3rd; Tango no sekku (boy's day) on May 5th; Tanabata (star festival) on July 7th and; Kiku Matsuri (chrysanthemum flower festival) on September 9th. The lovely, colourful pictures show the different offerings of food, fruit, herbs etc. typical of each seasonal ceremony. The room dividers made of a wooden frame are decorated with hanging illustrated pieces of cloth and various ropes tied in different ways depending on the season, or the ceremony. A very attractive and unusual manuscript. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Boston: Samuel E. Cassino, 1800. fair to very good overall condition, varies from volume to volume, wear on edges, light rubbing, some wear on some spine coverings, light yellowing and light foxing, tight pliable pages, a few separated covers, Numbered Limited Edition 45 Volume set! Offered for sale is this massive 45 Volume Book Set of THE CRUIKSHANK EDITION OF DICKEN'S WORKS with half Moroccan Leather and Marbled Hardcovers, gild lettering and raised bars on the spines, Marbled end pages, and a rare Limited Edition Numbered 95 of 500 Set! All volumes are numbered 95 and are not dated but I believe is a late 1800's to early 1900's set. They were published out of Boston by Samuel E. Cassino and are illustrated with many done by George Cruikshank along with other illustrators too. They measure about 8 3/4" by 6" and have tight pliable and very readable pages. There is very light yellowing and foxing, less than one would expect. The pages are made of a very high quality paper and have that "good feel" to them. There is wear on the covers edges as to be expected and a few hardcovers have separated. Some spines are flaking and beginning to lift also. I have made note of these in the title information below. The volume titles are as follows: THE ADVENTURES OF OLIVER TWIST Volumes 1 & 2 (spine covering beginning to lift at top of spine on vol. 2)..................AMERICAN NOTES FOR GENERAL CIRCULATION AND HUNTED DOWN (in 1 volume)...............REPRINTED PIECES (in one volume)................HARD TIMES (in one volume).............THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD (in one volume)........ … [Click Below for Full Description]

VOLTA, ALESSANDRO. - ["A NEW ERA IN ELECTRICITY" - PMM 225]
London, W. Bulmer & Co. for Peter Elmsley, 1800. 4to. In recent marbled paper wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", volume 90, part II. Including title-page of volume. Leaves reinforced in margin. Light offsetting from folding plate as usual. Plate trimmed with loss of right margin. (4), 403-431 pp. + folded plate. ¶ First edition of "the first announcement of the voltaic 'pile,' or electric battery" (Grolier/Horblit). It was a breakthrough in physics, and led to the development of electrotechnology and is today regarded as being one of the major milestones in the history of science. <br>"The voltaic pile revolutionized the theory and practice of electricity, so that within one hundred years of Volta's invention, more progress was made than in the two thousand four hundred years between the tentative experience of Thales and the publication of Volta's letter addressed to Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society ... The indispensability and ubiquity of electricity, in one form or another, in western civilization today emphasize sharply the fact that before 1800 human environment and existence were closer to life in ancient Egypt than to our own. Volta's invention is one of the earliest and most important causes of the change" (PMM).<br><br>"The paper, in French, was sent by Volta to his friend Cavallo in London for communication to the Royal Society. In it Volta describes the pile of alternating dissimilar metals (silver and zinc) which, when moist, generated a flow of constant-current electricity. With this new force water was decomposed, metal was … [Click Below for Full Description]
