Italy with the Addition of The Southern Parts of Germany as far as Pettau in Stiria; Murlakia, Dalmatia, The Adjacent Countries and All The Illyric Islands

London 1800 - Map on two sheets. Engraving with original hand coloring. Each image measures 24 3/4" x 42 1/2" This large and detailed map of Italy includes the main peninsula, as well as Siciily, Sardinia, Corsica, Malta, Dalmatia, Croatia and the Adriatic. It was printed on 4 sheets, joined 2 by 2. Major roads, towns, rivers, lakes, islands, ports, harbors and topographical features are all labeled. The map is on two sheets, with the top half extending from southern Germany to Puglia. In the text below the title, Faden and Delarochette acknowledge D'Anville's 1743 map of Italy as an important predecessor. A key at the left explains the coloring and labeling system. It also includes some geographical information about French, Italian, and other holdings in the region. The bottom half of the map includes Malta, Sicily, and Sardinia, as well as 7 international scales and a key of labeling conventions for roads. Louis Stanislaw d'Arcy Delarochette (1731 - 1802) was a British cartographer and engraver based in late 18th century London. He produced maps in conjunction with various other contemporary British cartographers, such as William Faden (1750 - 1836), also an 18th century English cartographer and publisher. Faden is best known for his important publication of the North American Atlas, which covered a region of particular interest to him. This map is a fruitful result of their collaboration.

        manuscriptkaart Muiden.

Prijs: ?950,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling).

Discharge Certificate Signed by both, in French with translation, (Louis Vincent Joseph Le Blond de, 1766-1809, General de Division, 1799, from 1808 Count of the French Empire) and MONARD (Jean Baptiste Nicolas de, 1750-1831, General de Brigade, 1793, General of the French Empire, 1803)

1800 - granting leave to retire home ("à ses foyers") on half-pay ('réforme'), "to Philippe Lemay . of Company No. 1, 1st Battalion, native of Collé [sic, Collinée] . Côtes du Nord, aged 26 years . who has served from the 27th April 1793 to the 5th Complementary Day Year 8 [22nd September 1800], on which date he was fully discharged as being no longer fit to continue in service", on provisional pay "until his Retirement Pension be set by the Ministry of War", giving Lemay's Summary of Service, beginning "in the former Walsh's Regiment now part of the 47th Half-Brigade the 17th April 1793. Took part in the campaigns of the Years 2, 3 and 4 with the army of the United Côtes de Brest and Cherbourg . Year 7 with the army of the Alps and Year 8 with the army of Italy. Received a gunshot wound to his Left Knee the 1st Vendémiaire [23rd September 1799]" and on "the 8th [30th September] took part in the withdrawal from Pignerolles in Piedmont", there follow the signatures of the 47th's Administrative Council (7, including three Captains), and in either margin "St Hilaire" as General commanding the 8th Division, and "Monard" as the Division's "Inspecteur aux Revues", with their stamps, overleaf is an interesting record, signed "Cochois" as Quarter-Master Treasurer, of 5 francs 50 centimes paid to Lemay in respect of "Linen & Footwear", and that he has received his normal pay for the last five months of Year 8, printed with a pleasing typeset border and manuscript additions, at the top is a woodcut trophy showing Marianne holding a staff bearing a cap of liberty, 11" x 13½", Marseille, 5th Complementary Day Year 8, 22nd September very slightly rubbed at folds and marked at one place in fold on verso, one stamp faint, but an attractive document Saint-Hilaire, a cavalry cadet at the age of 11, knew rapid promotion and at 29 was a general of brigade. A brave leader, he died of wounds from a cannonball at Aspern-Essling. Napoleon had promised him the rank of marshal, and ordered his remains to be interred at the Panthéon, next to Lannes, who had commanded the centre in the same battle. His name is inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe. Monard was also a fine cavalry officer. After the battle of Valmy (20th September 1792) Kellermann wrote how, at the head of his regiment, Monard had contributed to the victory by protecting a crucial flanking march, "a remarkable example of what a small cavalry body can do under a good commander". However, after a serious fall when in action (1793), he transferred to important posts at home, both civil and military, in particular as an inspector of cavalry and later as an inspector in chief. Twice he was imprisoned as a suspect against the republic - for a few days in 1793 and no less than five months in 1796. He retired in 1815 after 52 years' service. The term "Half-Brigade" ("Demi-Brigade") was introduced to avoid the associations of "Regiment". Regiments had been commonly named after members of the aristocracy, in this case Walsh's, one of the famous Irish regiments in the service of France. Napoleon restored the term "Regiment" in 1803. A coherent and very scarce group of pamphlets on coal supplies for Edinburgh, or Auld Reekie (Old Smoky) as it was known, whose domestic coal fires notoriously covered the city in dirty black soot. Henry Steuart was Sir Henry Seton Steuart, Bart., (1759-1836), landowner, agriculturist and arboriculturist, who advocated the construction of a canal from the Lanarkshire coalfields to Edinburgh in order to cheapen and improve the coal supply to the city.

Laws of the State of New-Jersey; Revised and Published ....

, 1800. 1800. NEW JERSEY. LAWS. Laws of the State of New-Jersey; Revised and Published, under the Authority of the Legislature, by William Paterson. Newark: Matthias Day, 1800. Lg. 8vo. [2], 455, [1], xxi, [1], 2, 46, [1] p. Modern full calf in antique style, red and black spine labels. Minor marginal spotting at rear of text, else a fine copy. The octavo edition of Paterson's Laws, printed by Matthias Day from sheets of the folio edition as they came from Abraham Blauvelt's press. Blauvelt's folio was an essential but expensive book, and Day saw a market for a less costly edition, printed on super royal paper in octavo format. The text on each page was nearly identical to that in the folio edition, so that a citation to one edition was also a citation to the other. For a detailed description of the evolution and printing of this edition, see Felcone, New Jersey Books, 169, and Felcone, Printing in New Jersey, 1754-1800, 1113. This copy contains the original title page, with the horse's head in the state arms facing to the left. When the remainder of the edition was purchased from Day by Newark printer and bookseller William Tuttle in 1814, Tuttle printed a new title page, dated 1800 but most easily identified by a right-facing horse's head. Des Judischen Landpflegers Pontii Pilati ber Jesum Ergangenes Blut-Urtheil, Geschehen zu Jerusalem an dem Gewohnlichen Gerichtsort Gabbatha oder Hochpflaster Genannt den 3 April im Jahr Christi 34. [N.p.: Regensburg?, c. 1800]. 16-3/4" x 12-1/2" hand-colored lithograph broadside (image is 14-1/2" 9-3/4"). Faint vertical and horizontal fold lines, light toning and soiling, minor wear and a few short tears to edges, one tiny faint stain to image, other stains and soiling to margins, mostly beyond platemarks near edges, printing crisp, colors vivid. $1,500. * Probably intended for schools and homes, this hand-colored lithograph depicts the trial of Jesus before the Sanhedrin (the Jewish judicial body) following his arrest in Jerusalem. Indulging in a bit of license, the artist has seated Pontius Pilate to the right of the Jewish judges. Each judge holds a descriptive placard with original texts, presumably by Kling, or the Gospel of John. Kling, the presumed author was a senior official of the Lutheran Church in Regensburg.         REGLEMENT, OF ORDRE WAARNA EEN IEDER COLONIER EN INGEZEETEN DEZER COLONIE SURINAMEN IN CAS VAN ALARM WEEGENS BUITENLANDSCHE VYANDEN ZIG STIPTELYK ZULLEN HEBBEN TE GEDRAGEN.

Paramaribo, A. T. Bordas, Ca. 1800 - (ca 1800 reissue of 1781 ed. ) . Later marbled boards, 12mo, 15 pages. An unrecorded ca. 1800 edition of an extremely rare proclamation made by the Dutch governor of Surinam at Paramaribo in 1781. It gives instructions to be followed by reisdents, including specifically the "Joodsche-Natie op de Savana" (the "Jewish Nation on the Savanna, " the famous Jodensavana Jewish settlement) , in case of attack by a foreign enemy, and must have originally been a response to England's declaration of war against the Netherlands in 1780. The 1800 issue, perhaps a response to English military action in the West Indies in 1800, probably appeared before the 1802 peace agreement. When an alarm is sounded from the fortress, each district captain is to sound his drum and all militias are to assemble immediately, fully armed, at the locations specified. The proclamation explicitly mentions companies of free citizens, mulattos and negroes. It further provides instructions for the defense of the rivers and plantations, and specifies fines for those who fail to carry out their duties. Plantation owners may judge for themselves which of their white servants and skilled slaves may bear arms. The citizens' divisions include one or more from the Jewish community. The proclamation includes 24 articles and the texts, dated 8 to 14 March 1781 at the end Texier was governor from 1779 to 1783. There seem to be three editions of this proclamation, all published at Paramaribo and each known from a single surviving copy. What may be the first, at the University of Wageningen, apparently names no printer or publisher. Another, at Indiana University, cannot be much later than 1781, for it bears the imprint of the heirs of J. Brink, who were already active in 1777, but it and the present edition both say herdrukt (reprinted) in the imprint. The present must be the last, for its printing types suggest a date no earlier than ca. 1800, OCLC records the printer A. T. Bordas in the years 1799 to 1820, and the watermark (D & C Blauw = horn on crowned shield above D & C Blauw, similar to Voorn, Noord-Holland 181, recorded in 1798) also suggests a date around 1800. B2191. NCC (1 copy of ed. Without publisher's name) ; OCLC WorldCat (1 copy of Brink ed. ) ; Suriname Catalogus 5586 (different proclamation with similar title, Amsterdam 1760) ; not in Church; Eberstadt; James Ford Bell Lib. ; JCB; Sabin; Streeter; Karlsruher Virt. Kat. ; STCN. With stamps of the Surinam colonial library and the national library in Paramaribo on the first and last two leaves. With the gutter fold torn and reinforced, not approaching the text, and some light waterstains, but still a good copy. (KH-7-2) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Prijs: ?2.950,- (incl lijst, BTW margeregeling).

        Five Eulogies for George Washington

1800. First Edition . AMES, Fisher; MINOT, George; PAINE, Robert Treat; STILLMAN, Samuel; PARISH, Elijah. Five Eulogies for George Washington, circa 1800 [sammelband]. Boston: Young & Minns, [1800], et al. Octavo, period-style full sheep gilt, red morocco spine label; pp. 31, [1]; 24; 22, [2]; 26, [2]; 32. $1850.First editions of four noted eulogies for the first President of the United States, with a second edition of a fifth, bound together in one volume.Massachusetts statesman Fisher Ames (1758-1808) made some of the greatest speeches ever presented in Congress. ""Fisher Ames stands out from other New England Federalists as a man of singularly pure and unselfish character, humble in spite of his great talents, zealous and activeÂ… His formal speeches were concise and pointed, well supplied though never overloaded with facts, and often reserved for the close of a debate when they could clear a confused issue. As an orator he had no equal in the generation between Patrick Henry and Henry Clay"" (DAB). In his eulogy Ames connects Washington's professional history to that of the nation itself, calling the epoch of his presidency ""the age of Washington"" (page 30). Of the president's heroism in the Revolution, Ames declares: ""When Washington heard the voice of his country in distress, his obedience was promptÂ… Our history is but a transcript of his claims on our gratitude"" (page 9). George Richards Minot was a prominent Massachusetts jurist and a founding member of the Massachusetts Historical Society; his eulogy reflects Minot's lifelong dedication to the Revolutionary cause. Thomas Paine, A.M., author of the eulogy in this collection, changed his name in 1801 to that of his father, Robert Treat Paine, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, so as not to be confused with the ""infidel"" author of The Age of Reason. Samuel Stillman was Minister of the First Baptist Church in Boston. ""A popular preacher, Stillman frequently gave eulogies for prominent personsÂ… in 1799 he was invited to preach the eulogy in Boston for George Washington"" (ANB). The final Oration is by the Reverend Elijah Parish, delivered at Byfield, Massachusetts on February 22, 1800, the designated day of national mourning for Washington. Bound with all half titles except for Ames' Oration. Minot's Eulogy is a second edition (stated on title page); all others are first editions. Sabin 1300; 49322; 58199; 91799; 58604. Ink signature of the original owner, Jeremiah Dummer, with his manuscript table of contents written in ink on the front flyleaf (in which he lists an additional six eulogies that are not present here).Occasional spotting and foxing to text. A very good copy, beautifully rebound in period-style sheep gilt.
