Fine Document Signed to his neighbour FERDINAND IV of NAPLES (1742-1823, from 14th March 1800 Pope)

1800 - (1751-1825), in Italian with translation, informing him "without delay of what has just come recently to hand from Cardinal MARTINIANA Bishop of Vercelli", (between Milan and Turin), "of the 26th June through his nephew Count Alciati", that First Consul BONAPARTE on the 25th June, "on his way back to Paris, had communicated his ardent desire to regularize Ecclesiastical affairs in France, and in the mean time was labouring to bring peace abroad", and wished "to open negotiations between us and him personally . pledging all in his power for the Holy See to recover all its States . He said that he had abandoned all the Intruding clergy", ('tutti gl'Intrusi'), "and did not even wish to discuss the subject. However, he made it clear that he was not able to commit to allowing back the Bishops who had emigrated, because, as he said, they do not agree with France, and finished by saying it was appropriate to nominate new people in their place, by the person who will exercise Sovereignty in France, and who, canonically instituted, will receive their mission and their Bulls from the Holy See. And as to their stipends, he proposes giving them a living allowance, until circumstances permit him to assign them real property". Pius continues, "we are resolved not to say a word on temporalities, nor enter at all into this matter, but only to keep strictly to the spiritualities, which by the duty of Our Apostolic Ministry we must have at heart. Accordingly we intend to tell him . that it gives us such joy to see brought back to the fold of Jesus Christ so many millions of souls in such vast expanses of country, and in all of which we will be allowed . to cooperate", adding "We thought fit . that . in the present state of affairs Your Majesty be kept informed of what involves us", and be given "timely notice". Pius assures Ferdinand of his "constant inclination" to "Your Majesty's service", and ends with his Apostolic Blessing. 2 sides folio and conjugate blank, St. Mary Major, Rome, "in the 1st Year of Our Pontificate", 8th July tiny closed tear in outer edge of side 1, a few other tiny holes barely touching neighbouring letters, otherwise in fine condition Written only 5 days after Pius VII's return to Rome, following the famous Conclave at Venice of 1799-1800. Napoleon had re-taken Lombardy from the Austrians at Marengo on the 14th June 1800. On the 25th he saw Martiniana and Martiniana wrote the very next day. The present letter uses many of the same words and phrases. In fact, Pius sent Mgr. Spina, a stronger negotiator than the Cardinal, whom Bonaparte had already met at Valence when returning from Egypt, followed by Consalvi, his long-serving Secretary of State. Napoleon's 'reconciliation' of the French Republic with Roman Catholicism, recognising it as the religion of the majority of the people, closes an epoch in the history of the Revolution. While his motives remained political, he believed religion to be cohesive of society, and so a force for peace at home. Freedom of public worship was restored, but under his strict control of higher appointments, with a great reduction in the number of dioceses, since the land supporting them had all been alienated. 'Intruding clergy' refers to the 'Constitution civile du clergé', voted by the Assembly in 1790. Those who swore to it numbered about half, though only four were Bishops. Those who did not were deprived, many emigrated, in particular the bishops, who were replaced by 'jureurs', known by their opponents as 'les Intrus', here 'gl'Intrusi'. Napoleon, therefore, proposes to re-start the episcopate from scratch. For the closeness of this letter to the actual Concordat, see Jean-Baptiste Jeangène Vilmer, 'Commentaire du Concordat de 1801 entre la France et le Saint-Siège', in Revue d'Histoire Ecclésiastique, Vol. 102:1, 2007, pp. 124-154, which also examines Napoleon's and Pius' thinking. For their stormy personal relations, the Coronation of 1804 and Pius' later imprisonments, while the F [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Rélation du Voyage à la Recherche de La Pérouse, fait par ordre de l'Assemblée Constituante, pendant les annees 1791, 1792, et pendant la 1ere et la 2de anneé de la République Française.

Paris: 1800. Two volumes, quarto, and folio atlas; text volumes uncut; the atlas with engraved title, folding chart of the voyage and 43 engraved maps, and plates; in period-style cat's-paw calf, gilt, atlas bound to match in half-calf over marbled boards. A handsome set of the Labillardière account of the d'Entrecasteaux voyage. This is the first edition of the narrative by the naturalist on the d'Entrecasteaux expedition, in which Australia was circumnavigated twice, and the islands surrounding investigated for traces of La Pérouse. The work is particularly interesting for its descriptions (and illustrations) of Tasmania, Tonga, New Caledonia, and New Guinea, and the Atlas contains outstanding views of these areas by the official artist Piron. Included is the first large depiction of the Black Swan. The 14 botanical plates, all by or produced under the direction of Redouté, the most famous of all botanical artists, include 2 of Eucalypts and 2 of Banksias. It was a notable voyage in itself, although also beset by tragedy: the commander, D'Entrecasteaux, died of a "dreadful cholic" shortly before the expedition collapsed in Batavia. There they learned of the French Revolution, and d'Auribeau, then commander, and the principal officers being monarchists, put themselves under Dutch protection, arrested the remainder of the officers, including Labillardière the naturalist, and Piron the artist, and disposed of the ships. D'Auribeau in turn died, and was succeeded by Rossel, who managed to return to Europe and later edited the manuscripts for the official account. The papers and natural history specimens were seized en route and carried to England, but in 1796, with the urging of Sir Joseph Banks, were returned to France under a flag of truce.Because Labillardière was a Republican, his account appeared first, while that of d'Entrecasteaux had to wait until the restoration of the monarchy. The atlas appeared a year earlier than the text./.

With 2 folding maps. Modern gold-tooled red half morocco, marbled boards, preserving the printed wrappers.

Borba de Moraes, p. 57; Rodriques 301; Sabin 2491; not in Welsh. First separate edition of an interesting account of the history of Brazil by Marie Armand Pascal d'Avezac de Castera-Macaya (1800-1875). It is an extract from the Bulletin de la Société de Géographie (the Août-Octobre 1857 issue) with a separately printed new title-page. It includes two folding maps, one of (the greater part of) South America, especially Brazil and one showing the estuary of the Amazon river. This copy was presented by the author to "La Société Orientale": his autograph dedication in ink is on the front wrapper and a library stamp of the Société Orientale on the title-page.In this work D'Avezac disputes several of Varnhagen's views concerning the period of the discoveries. He does not agree that Vespucci's second voyage was made in the company of Hojeda. Varnhagen defended his position in his Examen de quelques points de l'histoire geographique de Brésil (Paris, 1858). He believed that d'Avezac disagreed with his opinions because he supported the French assertions that the boundaries of French Guyana should stretch to the banks of the Amazon. D'Avezac replied to Varnhagen in Les voyages de Americ Vespuce au compte de l'Espange ... (Paris, 1858). It is also a criticism of Varnhagen's work about Vespucci's first voyage. Good presentation copy of a geographical history of Brazil.

ÉLÉMENS DE PERSPECTIVE PRATIQUE, A L'USAGE DES ARTISTES, Suivis De Réflexions et Conseils à un Elève sur la Peinture, et particulièrement sur le genre du Paysage.

Paris: Chez L'Auteur, An VIII (1800). First edition. A student of Joseph Vernet, influenced by Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin, Valenciennes was the most prominent French historical landscape painter of his day as well as being an original and influential theorist on the art of landscape painting. "In the late 18th century, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes changed the tide for landscape painting in France. Like Poussin, he saw landscape painting as worthy of the status of history painting and worked to convince the Academy and his contemporaries. In 1800 he published a groundbreaking book on landscape painting, Elémens de perspective practique. The book emphasized the aesthetic ideal of the 'historic landscape,' which must be based on the study of real nature. The success of the book pushed the Academy to create a prize for 'historic landscape' in 1817. The next generation of French landscape painters would benefit greatly from Valenciennes' efforts." ["Brief History of the Landscape Genre,"]. Of particular importance in his treatise is its final chapter, devoted entirely to garden design. Valenciennes considered the landscape painter to be uniquely qualified for the design of gardens, and provides precepts to follow in creating them. His insistence on Nature as the primary model for landscape painting is echoed in his views on landscape gardening. The alignment or trimming of trees is completely rejected. The importance of respecting the requirements and opportunities of the individual site is continually stressed. Italian gardens are singled out for their picturesque qualities (Valenciennes spent much time there) and English gardens are also considered, though not without some criticism. Even such French picturesque gardens as the Petit Trianon, Bagatelle and the Désert de Retz are faulted, but with the allowance that with complete neglect and the passage of time they might arrive at a suitable imitation of Nature. Ermenonville, however, is regularly singled out for praise and seems to stand as the perfect example of the type of garden Valenciennes attempted to promote. 4to (25.7 x 20 cm); (ii) + xxxii + 644 + xii pp. + 36 folding engraved plates. Recased in later quarter vellum with glazed marbled boards; minor repairs at board edges; title written in ink on spine; marginal damp stain on last 12 plates, barely touching image on 6 of them. .

John Andre was a British Army officer hanged as a spy by the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War for assisting Benedict Arnold's attempted surrender of the fort at West Point, New York to the British.         Memorial to the Managers of the Royal Infirmary

Edinburgh: Printed by Murray & Cochrane, 1800. Leatherbound. Very good. v, 260 p. 27 cm. Full leather. Boards reattached, new spine label, corners repaired. Inscribed by the author to Alex. Cleghorn on a front endpaper. Occasional spots but overall very clean. James Gregory (1753-1821) was a successful professor of medicine at Edinburgh but had a tendency to become involved in controversy. In this attack on the managers of the Royal Infirmary, he criticizes the practice of allowing all the surgeons in Edinburgh to officiate at the Infirmary in turn, stating a need for "a more rational system ... on the pure principle of what would be best for the patients. Two or three ordinary attending Surgeons, the best qualified that can be got, permanently appointed" (p. v). As a result, the number of surgeons was eventually limited to six. Gregory's style is sharp-witted and often sarcastic. Although Gregory became President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, he was suspended in 1809 after unwisely publishing certain private proceedings of the College.

      - Howgego, to 1800, N14; Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 463-464; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 252.6; STCN (4 copies); Tiele, Bibl. 789. Illustrated first and only separately published edition of the account of Van Neck's second voyage to the East (1600-1603), kept by Roelof Roelofsz. In 1600 the Dutch navigator Jacob Cornelisz. van Neck set out on a second voyage to the East, reaching Java in March 1601. From there he sailed for the Moluccas where the Sultan of Ternate visited the ships and accompanied the Dutch when they attacked the Portuguese fortress in Tidore. Afterwards Van Neck proceeded to China arriving near Macao, where a sloop, set out to determine whether the ships could move closer to the shore, was captured by the Portuguese in full view of the Dutch ships, standing by helplessly because of the contrary winds. Unable to help his crewmen and running short of supplies Van Neck sailed for Patani. Despite de the fleet's long stay there, Roelofsz. wrote very little about Patani. Commelin, however, added a long and interesting description of Patani, Siam and Malacca, as well as a brief account of the voyage of the three remaining ships from Van Neck's fleet written by Cornlis Claesz. With a very tiny water stain in the lower right corner of the first four leaves and a small corner torn off of leaf A3 not touching the text, otherwise in very good condition. Sides of the binding a bit rubbed. Illustrated account Van Neck's second voyage to the East.

Rare first and only edition of the abridged Swedish translation of William Bligh's account of his voyage to Tahiti as commander of the Bounty, of the mutiny onboard the ship and the subsequent voyage of part of the crew in a small boat, "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history" (Hill). In 1787, the English naval officer William Bligh (1754-1817), who had accompanied Captain Cook on his third voyage to the Pacific, was sent off to the Pacific for the purpose of introducing breadfruit trees from the South Sea Islands to the West Indies as cheap food for the slaves. After spending five months at Tahiti, he set sail for the Caribbean by way of Tonga, where the famous mutiny took place. Bligh and 18 of his men were set adrift in the ship's small launch boat and made a remarkable voyage to Timor, more than 6.5 kilometres away. "In the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland [= Australia] as he passed along it" (Wantrup). It includes an additional chapter dealing with Captain William Sever's visit to the Society Islands in 1788 (an abridgement in Swedish of chapter 20 of Stockdale's Botany Bay, 1789) and some notes on Tahiti by the translator Samuel Ödmann. With bookplate and owner's inscription. Only a few minor spots and the spine partly tattered. Very good, wholly untrimmed, copy.

Lyrical Ballads, with other poems. 2 vols. Vol. I: 2nd edn; Vol. II: FIRST EDITION, '1st issue'.

T.N. Longman & O. Rees. 1800 Without half titles as issued. Vol. I with three tiny unobtrusive paper flaws at I1, K1, & L3. Contemp. half calf, spines with horizontal bands & devices in gilt, maroon leather labels; spines sl. darkened with sl. rubbing to extremities, but a v.g. well-preserved set.ESTC T146537. Wise (Two Lake Poets) pp6-8. Vol. I, The second edition; Vol. II FIRST EDITION, 'first issue'. Includes The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Foster-Mother's Tale, The Nightingale, The Dungeon & Love by Coleridge, who failed to complete Christabel for Vol. II. Wordsworth's important Preface giving 'a systematic defence of the theory upon which the poems were written' first appears here - a preface he had been 'prevailed upon by Coleridge to write'. Vol. II was issued without an edition statement, as most of the material contained was entirely new. Collated with John Edwin Wells, Lyrical Ballads 1800: Cancel Leaves (PMLA 53, March 1938). He suggests it is better to 'discard the term "issue" in speaking of either of the volumes', ... as it is 'difficult to be positive regarding priority of states where variations between copies occur'. He concludes that, of more than 90 volumes he has examined, 'no fixed combinations of the variants occur'. This is his 'ordinary' copy of Vol. I, with p[v]/vi a cancel leaf. It was inserted in all but a very few copies, removing mention of the poem Christabel which Coleridge had not been able to finish in time for publication. Wells identifies two variants of the cancel leaf, identical in wording, but with either 'first' or 'First' on the first line of p[v]; this is the 'First' variant. Of the 44 copies of the first volume Wells examined, 16 had 'first' and 28 had 'First'. The whole of signature I is also cancelled (Wells' State 3), with no stub or any sign of paste, and the correct spelling 'to' and 'been' on p137. Vol. II is also the 'ordinary' copy, with a 3-item errata on p[228] and fifteen lines of Michael omitted on p210. The poem was left incomplete in error, the printer not noticing the existence of the last fifteen lines of text which were written on a 'page by themselves'. Cancel leaves were printed for pp209-210, completing the unfinished poem, but these appear to have been printed after the volume had been distributed and have only been recorded in a handful of copies. A similarly scarce errata leaf was printed, revised to give a list of 27 amendments. This copy of vol. II has the variants 'Oft I had heard ...' and 'She dwelt on a wild Moor,' on p64; Wordsworth later revised these lines to read 'Oft had I heard ...' and 'She dwelt on a wide Moor'.

Letters written by the Late Right Honourable Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, to his son...

London: John Nichols, 1800. Four volumes, octavo; title pages with armorial ownership stamp; in a fine contemporary binding of tree calf, flat spines gilt, double morocco labels. A most attractive set of this famous book. Chesterfield (1694-1773) is chiefly remembered as the author of these famous Letters, begun in 1737 and written almost daily as a method of educating his (extraordinarily uncouth) son, and published after their writer's death by the son's widow, Mrs. Eugenia Stanhope. 'Recognised as the most brilliant aristocrat since the Restoration Wits', Chesterfield 'still lives as a synonym for polished manners and full assured worldliness', and the letters are replete with sensible, facilely expressed instruction, especially in terms of what constitutes good breeding (Day). This set is in remarkably good condition, looking much as it must have done when first published. Small tear affecting just five letters of text, a few spots but an excellent set, fresh and clean.

        Death of Captain Cook.

London? circa, 1800. Engraving, 16.5 x 22 cm. (image size), a good strong impression, mounted. An unusual version of the famous scene at Kealakekua Bay, in a very good impression.Although the original image on which this is loosely based is clearly that of Webber, the engraving bears close comparison with the version of the scene first published by the engraver Alexander Hogg in 1784, and included in the important compendium edited by George William Anderson, A New, Authentic, and Complete Collection of Voyages Round the World (see Forbes 61). Given that the "Anderson" was much re-issued and copied, it is possible that this print originally derives from one of the later editions. Tightly clipped not affecting image and retaining central caption.

The True History of the Conquest of Mexico, By Captain Bernal Diaz del Castillo, one of the Conquerors. Written in the year 1568

London: Printed for J Wright by John Dean, 1800. viii+514 pages with frontispiece map. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8 3/4") housed in a custom slipcase. Translated by Maurice Keatinge. First English edition.Bernal Dïaz del Castillo was a conquistador, who wrote an eyewitness account of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards under Hernan Cortes, himself serving as a rodelero under Cortes. Born in Medina del Campo (Spain), he came from a family of little wealth and he himself had received only a minimal education. He sailed to Cuba in 1514 to make his fortune, but after two years found few opportunities there. Much of the native population of the island had already been killed by epidemics and forced labor, and in 1517 an expedition was sent to the smaller Caribbean islands to find alternative sources of labor. Dïaz joined this group, under the command of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. It was a difficult venture, and although they discovered the Yucatan coast, by the time the expedition returned to Cuba they were in disastrous shape. Nevertheless, Dïaz returned to the coast of Yucatan the following year, on an expedition led by Juan de Grijalva, with the intent of exploring the newly discovered lands. Upon returning to Cuba, he enlisted in a new expedition, this one led by Hernan Cortes. In this third effort, Dïaz took part in one of the legendary military campaigns of history, bringing an end to the Aztec empire in Mesoamerica. During this campaign, Dïaz spoke frequently with his companions in arms about their experiences, collecting them into a coherent narration. The book that resulted from this was Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva Espana (English: The True History of the Conquest of New Spain. In it he describes many of the 119 battles in which he claims to have participated, culminating in the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521.As a reward for his service, Dïaz was appointed governor of Santiago de los Caballeros, present-day Antigua Guatemala. He began writing his history in 1568, almost fifty years after the events described, in response to an alternative history written by Cortes's chaplain, who had not actually participated in the campaign. He called his book the Verdadera Historia (True History), in response to the claims made in the earlier work. Dïaz died in 1585, without seeing his book published. A manuscript was found in a Madrid library in 1632 and finally published, providing an eye-witness account of the events, often told from the perspective of a common soldier. Today it is one of the most important sources in understanding the campaign that led to the collapse of the Aztec Empire and the Spanish conquest of Mexico.Condition:Spine renewed with new period spine label and original boards which the corners and edges are heavily rubbed, some foxing to early pages. Frontispiece map repaired. Custom made red slipcase with Japanese toggles and leather spine label in gilt lettering else about a very good copy in a near fine case.
