        Five Eulogies for George Washington

1800. First Edition . AMES, Fisher; MINOT, George; PAINE, Robert Treat; STILLMAN, Samuel; PARISH, Elijah. Five Eulogies for George Washington, circa 1800 [sammelband]. Boston: Young & Minns, [1800], et al. Octavo, period-style full sheep gilt, red morocco spine label; pp. 31, [1]; 24; 22, [2]; 26, [2]; 32. $1850.First editions of four noted eulogies for the first President of the United States, with a second edition of a fifth, bound together in one volume.Massachusetts statesman Fisher Ames (1758-1808) made some of the greatest speeches ever presented in Congress. ""Fisher Ames stands out from other New England Federalists as a man of singularly pure and unselfish character, humble in spite of his great talents, zealous and activeÂ… His formal speeches were concise and pointed, well supplied though never overloaded with facts, and often reserved for the close of a debate when they could clear a confused issue. As an orator he had no equal in the generation between Patrick Henry and Henry Clay"" (DAB). In his eulogy Ames connects Washington's professional history to that of the nation itself, calling the epoch of his presidency ""the age of Washington"" (page 30). Of the president's heroism in the Revolution, Ames declares: ""When Washington heard the voice of his country in distress, his obedience was promptÂ… Our history is but a transcript of his claims on our gratitude"" (page 9). George Richards Minot was a prominent Massachusetts jurist and a founding member of the Massachusetts Historical Society; his eulogy reflects Minot's lifelong dedication to the Revolutionary cause. Thomas Paine, A.M., author of the eulogy in this collection, changed his name in 1801 to that of his father, Robert Treat Paine, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, so as not to be confused with the ""infidel"" author of The Age of Reason. Samuel Stillman was Minister of the First Baptist Church in Boston. ""A popular preacher, Stillman frequently gave eulogies for prominent personsÂ… in 1799 he was invited to preach the eulogy in Boston for George Washington"" (ANB). The final Oration is by the Reverend Elijah Parish, delivered at Byfield, Massachusetts on February 22, 1800, the designated day of national mourning for Washington. Bound with all half titles except for Ames' Oration. Minot's Eulogy is a second edition (stated on title page); all others are first editions. Sabin 1300; 49322; 58199; 91799; 58604.         Theatrum machinarum universale; of keurige verzameling van verscheide grote en zeer fraaie waterwerken, schutsluizen, waterkeringen, ophaal- en draaibruggen. Amsterdam, Petrus Schenk [II] & son (vol. II: Petrus Schenk [III]), 1757-1774. Imperial folio (50 x 34 cm). With a double-page engraved dedication plate and 41 double-page and 7 larger folding engraved illustration plates. Red half sheepskin (ca. 1800).

      - Bierens de Haan [3818.5] & [4839.5] (vol. II only, with later ed. of vol. I); STCN (2 & 4 copies of the 2 volumes); not in Berlin Kat.; Roberts & Trent, Bibl. Mechanica. Second edition of both volumes of a remarkably detailed set of scale construction drawings (plans, sections, elevations, perspective views, etc., including many detail drawings of individual parts) of 18th-century Dutch waterworks, with the accompanying letterpress descriptions and notes. It includes locks, sluices, bridges, pumps, pile drivers, an ice-breaker, an elaborate water-bailing mill and more. Most of the plates measure about 45 x 54 cm, with the folding ones about 52 x 76 cm. At least most of the plates depict existing works, and the text occasionally gives some historical information. The drawings are so detailed and give such a clear picture of how the mechanisms functioned that one could use them to reconstruct the works shown.A fine copy, nearly untrimmed, with only some false folds in the half-title and an occasional minor defect in the paper. Plate 23 in volume 1 has no number, but it may have been trimmed off at the head. The inside front hinge has partly separated from the book-block, but the binding is otherwise good. A fine copy of a magnificent display of Dutch hydraulic engineering.

        Prose Works. WITH: Poetical Works

1800. First Edition . DRYDEN, John. The Critical and Miscellaneous Prose WorksÂ… Now First CollectedÂ… with an Account of the Life and Writings of the AuthorÂ… and a Collection of His Letters by Edmond Malone. WITH: DRYDEN, John. Poetical WorksÂ… Containing Original Poems, Tales, and Translations, with Notes by the Late Rev. Joseph Warton. London: T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies; F.C. and J. Rivington, et al., 1800; 1811. Eight volumes. Octavo, late 19th-century full brown speckled calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, green morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. $2400.First critical Malone edition of DrydenÂ’s prose works, with engraved frontispiece portraits, and containing MaloneÂ’s famous biography of Dryden, together with WartonÂ’s edition of the verse, also with engraved frontispiece portrait, handsomely bound.Edmond MaloneÂ’s edition of DrydenÂ’s prose works contains his famous biography of Dryden, upon which Sir Walter Scott relied in his own Dramatic Works of John Dryden. Considered DrydenÂ’s first “editor,” Malone was “the first historian of early English drama, the biographer of Shakespeare, Dryden and Reynolds, and a relentless exposer of literary fraud and forgery. His dedication to discovering the facts of literary history through manuscripts and early editions laid the foundations for the scholarÂ’s code and the modern study of literature” (Peter Martin). Joseph Warton began preparing his critical edition of DrydenÂ’s verse in 1800 but did not live to complete it; his younger son John finished the task. “Dryden is one of the most significant figures in the history of English verse; for he perhaps more than any other single person formulated a method for poetry that has appealed to disciplesÂ… as different as Pope, Gray, Churchill, Byron, Keats and T.S. EliotÂ… [DrydenÂ’s method] is, in short, the poetry of eloquence” (Baugh et al., 722). Booklabel of renowned bibliophile Abel E. Berland.A few stray spots of foxing, minor rubbing to outer hinges of bindings. A handsome set.

        Treatise Concerning Heaven And Hell

1800. Signed. SWEDENBORG, Emanuel. A Treatise Concerning Heaven And Hell, And of the Wonderful Things Therein, as Heard and Seen, by the Honourable and Learned Emanuel SwedenborgÂ… Translated from the Original Latin. Chester: Printed by C.W. Leadbeater, 1800. Octavo, contemporary cloth boards, paper spine label, uncut. $4500.Fourth edition in English of SwedenborgÂ’s important treatise on Heaven and Hell (1778), an especially memorable association copy belonging to English poet laureate Robert Southey, signed and dated 1805 on the title page by him, this copy with the distinctive flowered cloth covers that were created by SoutheyÂ’s devoted daughters. This exceptionally scarce association copy of Emanel SwedenborgÂ’s Treatise concerning Heaven and Hell (1778) belonged to English poet laureate Robert Southey, and contains with his signature and date of 1805 on the title page. Swedenborg, a scientist, mystic, philosopher and theologian, wrote this Treatise based on visions during which he claimed to have actually visited heaven and hell. His mystical experiences inspired and influenced a number of important writers, including Blake, whom Southey read and whose ideas he considered extreme. Southey, who with Wordsworth and Coleridge made up the enormously influential Lake Poets, was Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death in 1843, when he was succeeded by Wordsworth. SoutheyÂ’s “style has long been regarded as masterly in its ease and clarity” (Kuiper, 1055). His daughters had a hobby of covering his books in flowered chintz; indeed, the boards of SoutheyÂ’s copy of this work are covered in flowered cloth. Southey referred to the books with such covers as his “Cottonian Library,” after the library put together by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton in the 17th century, which formed the basis of the British Museum. Armorial bookplate. Pencilled notations on provenance to front pastedown.Text generally fresh with light scattered foxing; mild soiling, some loss to spine of cloth covers. A highly desirable, extremely good copy with an important literary provenance.

        Lecons d'Anatomie Comparee

1800. First Edition . CUVIER, Georges. Lecons d’Anatomie Comparee. Paris: Baudouin, An VIII (1800-05). Five volumes. Octavo, contemporary half navy calf gilt rebacked with original spines laid down, marbled boards and endpapers. $2000.First edition of this founding work of modern comparative zoology, illustrated with seven large folding tables and 52 engraved plates.Cuvier (1769-1832) reorganized the comparative anatomy collections of the Museum d’Histoire Naturelle-at the time the world’s largest establishment dedicated to scientific research. The huge museum menagerie furnished Cuvier with invaluable specimens for dissection and anatomical preparations of mammals, birds, fish and fossils (DSB). “Cuvier’s Leçons was the first truly complete work in the history of comparative anatomy. Whereas his predecessors had at best applied comparison to select groups of animals, Cuvier consistently attempted to employ it in his study of every known animal or species. Comparative anatomy became for Cuvier an essential segment of the theoretical basis of natural history… Comparative anatomy is therefore the division of the natural sciences which tends to generalize, to erect the theory of organization” (Coleman, 62; Norman Library 565). Volume I contains the principal discussion of Cuvier’s famous theory of the correlation of parts (the functional relationship of each bodily organ to every other organ). “Cuvier ranks with von Baer as one of the founders of modern morphology” (Garrison-Morton 311). Text in French. Horblit, One Hundred Books Famous in Science 20a. Bookplates.Occasional light foxing, faint dampstain in Volume II. An extremely good copy.

Considérations géographiques sur l'histoire du Brésil. Examen critique d'une nouvelle histoire générale du Brésil recemment publiée en portugais a Madrid par M. With 2 folding maps. Modern gold-tooled red half morocco, marbled boards, preserving the printed wrappers.

      - Borba de Moraes, p. 57; Rodriques 301; Sabin 2491; not in Welsh. First separate edition of an interesting account of the history of Brazil by Marie Armand Pascal d'Avezac de Castera-Macaya (1800-1875). It is an extract from the Bulletin de la Société de Géographie (the Août-Octobre 1857 issue) with a separately printed new title-page. It includes two folding maps, one of (the greater part of) South America, especially Brazil and one showing the estuary of the Amazon river. This copy was presented by the author to "La Société Orientale": his autograph dedication in ink is on the front wrapper and a library stamp of the Société Orientale on the title-page.In this work D'Avezac disputes several of Varnhagen's views concerning the period of the discoveries. He does not agree that Vespucci's second voyage was made in the company of Hojeda. Varnhagen defended his position in his Examen de quelques points de l'histoire geographique de Brésil (Paris, 1858). He believed that d'Avezac disagreed with his opinions because he supported the French assertions that the boundaries of French Guyana should stretch to the banks of the Amazon. D'Avezac replied to Varnhagen in Les voyages de Americ Vespuce au compte de l'Espange . (Paris, 1858). It is also a criticism of Varnhagen's work about Vespucci's first voyage. Good presentation copy of a geographical history of Brazil.

Philip III commissioned them to investigate the passage into the Pacific to the south of Tierra del Fuego in 1618 and they gained fame as the first to circumnavigate Tierra del Fuego in 1618-1619.         Narrative of the life and adventures of Paul Cuffe, a Pequot Indian: during thirty years spent at sea and in travelling in foreign lands.Vernon, Horace N. Bill, 1839. 8vo. Modern cloth.

      - Hill 403; Howgego, 1800-1850, C57; WorldCat (7 copies). First edition of Paul Cuffe(e) junior's narrative, describing his adventurous life at sea. Although Cuffee is identified in the title as a Pequot Indian, he was of Wampanoag and African Ashanti descent and the son of the famous abolitionist and African colonizer with the same name. With his father he made his first voyage in 1813 when he joined the whaler Atlas as a 12-year old harpooner. The ship was seized by the English and Cuffee was held on Jamaica for eight months. He managed to escape and spent the next decades aboard a number of whalers, visiting Brazil, the Azores, Peru, and the Society Islands. The factual narrative makes for interesting reading and "is one of the scarcest and most sought after of all accounts of the American whale-fishery" (Howgego). Some dampstains. Good copy with a clipping from the Mystic Seaport Newsletter on the Paul Cuffe Memorial Fellowship loosely inserted.

The first account is by Christoph Frick (1659-after 1717) and was originally published in in 1692 as Ost-Indianische Räysen und Krieges-Dienste. He served the VOC as a surgeon from 1680 until 1685. Of primary interest is his account of the war with Bantam in 1682.The second account is by Elias Hesse (1659- after 1689) and was first published in 1687 as Ost-Indische Reise-Beschreibung. "In addition to descriptions of Sumatra and the mines, Hesse describes Java, Batavia, and the Malabar coast of India. Some of his descriptions were borrowed from other works - especially the material on India - but much of it was, if not new, at least based on his own observations" (Lach & Van Kley). The third account is by Christoph Schweitzer and was first published in 1688 as Journal- und Tagebuch. After a brief stay on Java, he was assigned to Ceylon, where he spent the remainder of his five-year enlistment. "Much can be learned from Schweitzer's journal about the daily life of VOC soldiers and the society they created in the Dutch outposts" (Lach & Van Kley). Some occasional faint foxing. Second, corrected edition of Parry's account of his voyage in search of the Northwest Passage. Having sailed to the Arctic under John Ross, Parry believed that Lancaster Sound could provide the opening to the western sea. Equipped with two ships, the Hecla and the Gripper, he set out to confirm his suspicion in 1819. Parry discovered Prince Regent's Inlet, Melville Sound, and Banks Island, and surveyed the south shores of Barrow Strait. He reached 110° West longitude, but ice halted further westward advance. The crew wintered in Winter Harbour, and during this long winter Edward Sabine edited a periodical journal, The North Georgia gazette, and winter chronicle. This periodical was afterwards published by John Murray, and is here offered together with Parry's narrative. Our copy, moreover, has a hand-written inscription by Parry, pasted on the front flyleaf: "Admit the bearer, W.E. Parry". Front board of the narrative slightly damaged; with the engraved bookplate of Samuel Neale. An attractive set, kept together in a slipcase.

An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His Present Majesty, for making discoveries in the southern hemisphere, and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour.London, W. Strahan, T. Cadell, 1773. 3 volumes. Large 4to (29.5 x 24.5 cm). With 28 engraved charts and views of coasts, bays and estuaries (several large folding) and 23 numbered engraved illustrations (topographic views, portraits, etc., mostly folding). Contemporary uniform mottled calf, gold-tooled spines.

      - Beddie 648; ESTC T74465; Hill 782; Holmes 5; Mendelssohn I, p. 377; Sabin 30934 ("The first edition, to be preferred for its plates"); Howgego, to 1800, C173. First edition (first issue) of the official account of James Cook's first voyage, edited from Cook's journals by John Hawkesworth. Although Hawkesworth was heavily criticized for his sloppy editorial work and his use of the first person, the account is of great historical significance, especially for its finely executed illustrations. The first volume relates the voyages of Byron, Carteret and Wallis (the discoverer of Tahiti), and volumes two and three are devoted to Cook's voyage. Cook was appointed commander of the Endeavour to sail for Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus and to search for the hypothetical Terra Australis, whose existence had been proposed by the geographer Alexander Dalrymple. In Tahiti he duly observed the transit and then sailed south in search of the southern continent until bad weather forced him to turn north again. In October 1769 the crew sighted the northern Island of New Zealand. Cook spent many weeks surveying New Zealand and his remarkably accurate chart, included in the second volume, remains a major achievement. From New Zealand he steered westward, heading for the east coast of Australia. Cook surveyed and charted almost the whole coast of New South Wales and proved that New Holland (Australia) and New Guinea were two separate islands. According to Holmes there are several issues of the first edition and the "earliest issues lack the directions for placing the cuts and the 'Chart of the Streight of Magellan' " (Holmes ). Our copy includes the directions for the binder, but lacks the chart of the Strait of Magellan. All volumes have some leaves foxed or browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Bindings scuffed at the extremities and worn in the joints, with a long crack in the joint of the front board of volume 1, but otherwise good.
