Reisen nach dem nördlichem[!] Theile der Südsee während der Jahre 1790 bis 1795. Aus dem Englischen übersetzt und mit Anmerkungen begleitet von Joh. Friedr. Wilh. Herbst.Berlin, (colophon: printed by Johann Wilhelm Schmidt) for the Vossische Buchhandlung, 1799-1800. 2 volumes. 8vo. With a large folding engraved map (52 x 42 cm) by Ferdinand Sprögel (Berlin, 1800) of the northwest coast of America, and 2 folding aquatints. Contemporary half calf.

Cox II, p. 31; Ferguson 300; Hill 304; Howego, to 1800, V13; Sabin 98444. First edition of the German translation by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst of George Vancouver's famous account of his exploration of the northwest coast of America and east coast of Asia. "This voyage became one of the most important made in the interests of geographical knowledge" (Hill). George Vancouver (1757-1798), who had participated in the second and third voyages of James Cook, was commissioned by the English monarch to continue the exploration of the northwest coast of America. He was made commander of a grand-scale expedition to reclaim Britain's rights resulting from the Nootka Convention, at Nootka Sound, to examine thoroughly the south coast in order to find a possible passage to the Atlantic. Vancouver put an end to the delusion that the subarctic seas in the direction of Greenland could be reached from Nootka Sound or any of the inlets in its vicinity and his description of the Port of San Francisco and the coasts of California in Spanish hands is most interesting. "This work ranks with the voyages of Cook and La Pérouse among the most important of the 18th and 19th centuries" (Cox). In very good condition, only slightly browned. Bindings rubbed along the extremities, only minor damage to the foot of the spine of the second volume, otherwise very good.

Erster Band [all published].Zürich, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Sohn, 1796-1798. 3 parts. 4to. With 1 general title-page in French and 1 in German, 27 hand-coloured unnumbered engraved plates, each accompanied by a detailed botanical description (2 or 3 pages in French and the same in German). Each part in the original publisher's letterpress-printed blue paper wrappers, with the part-title in French and German on the front wrapper and the content on the inside front (in French) and back (in German) wrapper, and with the original tissue guard leaves before each plate.

Arnold Arboretum I, p. 158; Bradley I, p. 264; Hunt Lib. 720 note; Nissen, BBI 360; WorldCat (6 copies incl. at least 2 incompl. & 1 in an 1800 reissue). Rare first and only edition, in the original publisher's wrappers as issued in three parts, of a lovely series of 27 hand-coloured botanical plates, each plate showing a single species with the Latin name at the head and some detail drawings. Each is accompanied by detailed botanical information in French and German. It covers a wide variety of flowering plants, including woody bushes and trees, uncommon garden plants and some exotic species. Among them are a dwarf bitter orange (Citrus aurantium pygmaeum) and an American tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera). The author's name appears nowhere in the book, but he signed the avant-propos/Vorbericht "C**.", 1 August 1796, and he has been identified as Joseph Philippe de Clairville (1742-1830), a French-born Swiss botanist and co-founder of the Schweizer naturforschende Gesellschaft. The beautiful plates were drawn and executed by the well-known Swiss painter and poet Johann Rudolf Schellenberg (1740-1806), author and illustrator of many entomological works. The plates are unsigned, but Clairville refers to Schellenberg in his avant-propos. We have found no record of a copy preserved in the original three parts and no doubt for this reason the work is confusingly described in the literature. Part 3 concludes with two tables of contents (1 in French and 1 in German) for the entire first volume, showing that it was complete with the present 27 species. No more was ever published. While Clairville is a well-known botanist, this publication has been almost entirely overlooked in the botanical literature and several of the few copies located are incomplete. A few lines of text were written on one tissue guard leaf in a nineteenth-century hand (now difficult to read), and an occasional recent pencilled note adds some botanical names. With the text leaves of part 1 foxed, but otherwise in very good condition (most of the plates fine) and with the colours fresh and bright, with only one or two small spots in the text and an occasional minor marginal defect. The manuscript note on 1 tissue guard has offset faintly on the facing text page. Parts 2 and 3 are wholly untrimmed and part 1 only slightly trimmed. The spines and some edges of the wrappers are tattered and the sewing is somewhat loose, so that one bifolium has detached, but the wrappers are otherwise in good condition. A rare and beautiful flower-book with 27 hand-coloured plates.

Chronica do muyto alto e muyto poderoso Rey destes reynos de Portugal Dom João o III deste nome, ...Coimbra, Real officina da universidade, 1796. 4 volumes. 4to. With a woodcut royal Portuguese coat of arms on title-page of each volume. Contemporary plain paper wrappers.

Howgego, to 1800, A 90; cf. Bosch 52; Maggs, Bibl. Brasiliensis 104; not in Borba de Moraes. Second edition of an extensive history of the reign of King João (John) III of Portugal (1502-1557), written by Francisco d'Andrada (1540-1614). During his rule, Portuguese possessions were extended in Asia, and in the New World through the Portuguese colonization of Brazil. The majority of the 419 chapters deal with Portugal's overseas possessions and trading posts in India (Diu, Goa, Chaul, Calicut), China, Ceylon, the Moluccas, the Middle East (Ormuz, Suez), Africa (Zanzibar, Ethiopia, Mozambique), Brazil, etc. The chapters discuss newly acquired lands, the governors of the regions, voyages and travels, wars and sieges, and trade, Portugal being one of the first countries with trading posts in China and Japan. Though João III's reign was marked by the introduction of the inquisition in Portugal from 1536 onwards, the present publication only briefly deals with the subject. Some other chapters deal with Jesuit missions to the east. With a few occasional small spots, otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed and most of the bolts in the third and fourth volumes unopened. Paper wrappers soiled and worn.

Reise nach Palästina in den Jahren von 1749 bis 1752. auf Befehl ihro Majestät der Königinn von Schweden herausgegeben vond Carl Linnäus aus em Schwedischen.Rostock, Johann Christian Koppe, 1762 (colophon: Leipzig, Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkopf, 1761). 8vo. With woodcut tailpieces. Contemporary half vellum.

Bibl. Palaestinensis 472; Howgego, to 1800, H33; cf. Atabey 564 (English edition); Blackmer 668 (French edition); Hage Chahine, 2134 (French edition); not in VD18. First edition of the German translation of a travelogue and zoological work, originally written in Latin by the Swedish zoologist and botanist Friedrich Hasselquist (1722-1752) and published posthumously by the celebrated naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). "In 1749 Hasselquist set off on a botanical expedition to the Middle East. Sailing from Stockholm ... he arrived at Izmir (= Smyrna, in Turkey) where he spent the winter of 1749-1750 exploring the hinterland. In March 1750 he took a trip into the interior of Turkey, and afterwards sailed for Egypt ... he proceeded through Palestine and Syria, visited Cyprus, Rhodes and Chios, and then returned to Izmir" (Howgego). The work can be divided into two parts. The first part consists of a chronological journal, followed by 14 letters from Hasselquist to his tutor Linnaeus. The second part contains a zoological, botanical and mineralogical description of the area, starting with the four-footed animals, followed by birds, amphibians, fish, insects, plants and stones. Especially his descriptions of fishes in the Nile are very valuable. The work concludes with the materia medica of the Middle East. Hasselquist was already sick when he wrote and died during his travels in 1752, near Izmir. In 1757 the work was posthumously published by Linnaeus, entitled Iter Palaestinum, "who described it as being full of fresh, genuine and precise observations: "So admirable a travel journal has never before appeared..."." (Blackmer). With an inscription on flyleaf from E. Atkinsons(?), dated Jerusalem 1858, and slip with manuscript inscription pasted down on flyleaf from John R. Ruth. Slightly browned, title-page foxed, a few notations and underlining in pencil, and a small waterstain on page 259. Binding rubbed along the extremities, sides rubbed. Overall a very good copy.

Indulging in a bit of license, the artist has seated Pontius Pilate to the right of the Jewish judges. Each judge holds a descriptive placard with original texts, presumably by Kling, or the Gospel of John. Kling, the presumed author was a senior official of the Lutheran Church in Regensburg.         A collection of fourteen original watercolour studies of birds.

Painted by the "wayward genius", whose work is valued for its accurate, delicate and lively touch. He produced superb illustrations for Williamson's 'Oriental Field Sports,' (1807), 'British Field Sports,' (1807) and others. These watercolours were part of a group commissioned by Walter Fawkes (1769-1825), a renowned collector and a close friend of J. M. W. Turner, he entertained Howitt and Turner at Farnley Hall and they accompanied him on specimen collecting expeditions on the estate. Fawkes assembled the Farnley 'Ornithological collection'. This impressive collection comprised five volumes of studies. The collection was broken up in later years. And other examples are now located in Leeds Art Gallery; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Tate collection. A substantial group of fine studies by Howitt and rare in commerce.

A Narrative of Some Extraordinary Things that Happened To Mr. Richard Giles's Children, at the Lamb, Without Lawford's-Gate, Bristol; Supposed to be the Effect of Witchcraft. By the late Mr. Henry Durbin, Chymist, who was an Eye and Ear Witness of the Facts herein related. (Never before published.) To which is added, a letter from the Rev. Mr. Bedford, late vicar of Temple, to the Bishop of Glocester, relative to one Thomas Perks, of Mangotsfield, who had dealings with familiar spirits.

Bristol: Printed and Sold by R. Edwards: Sold also by T. Hurst and W. Baynes London; and by Hazard and Browne Bath., Bristol, London and Bath 1800 - Hardcover. Large octavo. (Approx. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches). 60pp. Beautiful half-leather craft binding by renowned London book-binder Bernard C. Middleton. Brown half morocco spine and tips over marbled-paper boards. Gilt rules and titling up spine between two raised bands. The first and only early edition of this significant account of the famous "haunting" of the Lamb Inn in Bristol that began in November 1761. What started with poltergeist-like incidents focussing on the children of the landlord, Richard Giles, soon escalated, with accusations that the spirit causing the phenomena was acting at the behest of a Witch from Gloucestershire, who was herself employed by an enemy of Giles'. The author of the tract, Henry Durbin, was a local druggist who personally witnessed some of the incidents, and organised an investigation which included a number of pious local notables questioning the spirit as to its actions. Within months Richard Giles took ill and died, and the spirit, who identified itself as "Malchi", informed Durbin that the man had been killed by witchcraft. Supposedly the maleficence continued until Giles' widow sought help from a "cunning woman" of Bedminster who told her what must be done to make it cease. Durbin who was involved throughout, remained convinced of the reality of the events that he described. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. A little chipping to the fore-edge of a couple of leaves due to careless opening, some pale shadowing - some sort of offsetting - to the corners of the endpapers and first and last leaves, which are also a little dust-darkened. Still a clean, crisp, VG+ copy in VG+ binding (just a little rubbing and darkening to the marbled paper of the boards). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Observations of the Manners and Customs of the Egyptians, the Overflowing of the Nile and its Effects; with Remarks on the Plague, and other Subjects. Written during a Residence of Twelve Years in Cairo and its Vicinity.

London: John Stockdale, 1800 - Quarto (260 × 204 mm). Contemporary half calf, rebacked with original spine laid down, marbled sides. A little rubbed, light browning, but overall very good. Large folding map frontispiece of the Nile from d'Anville's 1765 map. First edition. An interesting and uncommon account of Egypt before the French expedition. An account of Napoleon's invasion, and of the Battle of the Nile was added to a subsequent edition in order to cash in on popular interest. Antes was born in Frederick, Pennsylvania, his father Heinrich, a member of the German Reformed Church, being largely responsible for the establishment of the Moravian Brotherhood in that state. In 1769 he was ordained in the Moravian ministry and travelled out to Egypt as a missionary. From his arrival in 1770 to his departure in 1781 Antes "endured a series of ordeal not at all unlike the extraordinary plots concocted by adventure story writers" (McKorkle, "John Antes; American Dilettante", Musical Quarterly 1956). The most horrifying incident was his imprisonment and beating by the Bey in an attempt to extract a ransom. On leaving Egypt Antes spent two years in Germany, before joining the Moravian congregation at Fulneck, Yorkshire as warden. He remained in England until his death in Bristol in 1808. Antes was a talented musician and maker of watches and instruments; a violin that he made in 1759 is held by the Moravian Historical Society Museum at Nazareth, PA. He developed a number of innovations, improved piano hammers, violin bows, and tuning pegs for violins and cello. A door-lock he invented was further refined by his nephew, the American architect, Benjamin Henry Latrobe. In musical circles he probably best remembered as a putative friend of Haydn and the composer of a considerable number of religious vocal works. Atabey 25; Blackmer 36; Goldsmiths'–Kress 17825.1.

Chez A. Parchemin l'An XXV de mes lunettes 1800 - pp. [iv], [60], [2, engraved music], [1], 8vo, contemporary half calf, Moravian marbled paper infills, loss of surface to spine (?scorched) and slightly defective at head, joints cracked but holding, corners a bit worn, recased, but not recently, a few minor corrections to the text. This rare book is the subject of the last chapter in Walter Rex's The Attraction of the Contrary. Essays on the literature of the French Enlightenment, CUP, 1987, in which it is averred that only one copy has come to light, in the Bibliothèque de l'Arsénal: WorldCat adds the Royal Library of Denmark. The history of Lanternopolis is considered, as also the spoof date - a parody of the Revolutionary calendar. The spirits of Rabelais and Villon are invoked, later, Nerval and Baudelaire. The poem 'centers around this overwhelming event [the Terror], and indeed the most interesting way to interpret it is to see the poem as reflecting a kind of trauma, a forcible withdrawal from life which translates into sexual impotence, on the most explicit level, and also, on the other, into an inability to deal with moral issues - another kind of impotence. Naturally such a a statement teems with contradictions, short circuits, and jokes that leave everyone in the dark . It embodies nothing less than the dissolution of the Classical way of writing poetry . [it] can be seen as foreshadowing a turning point in the history of literature, that will eventually lead towards the kind of alienation characterising those who used to be called "les petits romantiques."' The corrections to the text are little more than the rectification of typos, but in one instance the substitution of 'goutes' for 'moeurs' is suggestive of authorial intervention (there are no printed errata). The only clue as to authorship comes with the music: 'Paroles et Musique de C[itoy]en L. M.'
