A Voyage to the Isle of France, the Isle of Bourbon, and the Cape of Good Hope; with Observations and Reflections upon Nature and Mankind. Translated from the French. To which is added Some Account of the Author

      - London: J Cundee, 1800. First English Edition, Octavo, pp xxiv + 334 pp. Contemporary half brown calf with marble boards. 5 Raised bands on spine, 6 spinal compartments, leather title label to spine with gilt decorative devices in the compartments. Title page repaired (sensitively with contemporary paper stock). Tear at the base of pp 233/2334 (5. 5 cm) with no loss. Small puncture to pp 333/ 334 (0.5 centimetres in diameter). Foxed throughout. Front hinge cracked internally. End-papers significantly browned. Some pencil notes throughout. One line underlined in ink on page 43. One line ink notation on page 205. Inked name "JHB S Pierre, Martinique" on the title-page. This is unlikely to have been the author's copy though as it would appear that he visited Martinique with his uncle prior to 1757. I cannot find any evidence of him having returned to the island. The following has been referenced from both Wikipedia and "Chest of Books". Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, also called Bernardin de St. Pierre (9 January 1737 Le Havre – 21 January 1814 Éragny, Val-d'Oise) was a French writer, botanist, novelist and naturalist. He is best known for his 1787 novel Paul et Virginie which is still in print today. The novel's title characters have been friends since birth. They fall in love, but sadly die when the ship Le Saint-Geran is wrecked. The story takes place on the island of Mauritius then under French rule, and named Île de France. Apparently written on the eve of the French Revolution, the novel is hailed as Bernardin's finest work and has been translated into many languages. It records the fate of a child of nature corrupted by the false, artificial sentimentality that prevailed at the time among the upper classes of France. He became a close friend of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He also appears to have been an early abolitionist. On discovering that the real object of an expedition to Madagascar in 1776 was the slave trade, he left it and went to Mauritius instead. In 1795 he was elected to the Institut de France, in 1797 manager of the Botanical Gardens and in 1803 member of the Académie Française. His principle works are as follows : Études de la nature (1784), Paul et Virginie (1788), La Chaumière indienne (1790), Le Café de Surate (1790), Les Vœux d’un solitaire (1790), De la nature de la morale (1798) Voyage en Silésie (1807), La Mort de Socrate (1808), Harmonies de la nature (1815). Although he was very unpopular in his lifetime (he refused to bow to convention and his practice of etiquette was apparently somewhat limited) he was rumoured to have had affairs with the Empress Catherine II as well as a polish princess (which reportedly left him broken hearted).         An album containing ten watercolour and gouache drawings of botanical arrangements

1800 - Original gilt-patterned paper over pasteboard, green cloth ties A lovely early album of fine Chinese flower paintings, in remarkably fine condition. Despite its entirely Chinese origins this album was almost certainly produced for a western patron: perhaps a gift from an East India Company employee to his wife, or a Yankee clipper captain for his daughter. It contains a very fine selection of watercolours executed on pith-paper: a material that rarely survives in anything approaching fine condition. The drawings are all of arrangements of sprigs from flowering plants together with individual blooms. The intention of these drawings was not to provide dry scientifically-accurate botanical drawings, but to produce designs that were pleasing and harmonious. Flowers include Hibiscus, Gardenia, Chrysanthemum, Quince, Morning Glory, Camellia and two butterflies. It later became the custom to instruct the Chinese artists in the art of western botanical drawing and also supply them with good quality western paper to work on. The apparent lack of any foreign materials or method suggest an earlier date for this album, although the style of drawing did remain popular through most of the 19th century. (9 1/2 x 12 7/8 inches). 10 original watercolour and gouache drawings on Chinese pith paper (each approx. 8 x 11 1/2 inches), most with small areas heightened with gum arabic, each tipped onto a backing sheet at each corner and bordered by strips of pale blue paper that are also tipped to the backing sheet (four with insignificant splits to the pith paper, as usual).         SALZBURG PERICOPES STANDARD EDITION (DAS SALZBURGER PERIKOPENBUCH MIT LEDEREINBAND) Fine Facsimile Illuminated Edition of 11th Century

Faksimile Verlag Luzern. New;. Hardcover. <p>Salzburg Pericopes, 11th century - Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Clm 15713</p><p>A Monumental Example of Ottonian Book Illumination </p><p>A Counterpart to Secular Manuscripts </p><p>The Salzburg Pericopes provide an outstanding example of a manuscript in the tradition of Ottonian book illumination which is closely related to the Carolingian style. As all great manuscripts from the Ottonian period, the Salzburg Pericopes were created in a monastery. However, the Pericopes were not made on the initiative of an Emperor but on request of the high clergy, thus forming a counterpart to the well-known secular manuscripts of the time. The extremely lavishly decorated manuscript may be considered as the equivalent of the Gospel Pericopes of Henry II, another important illuminated manuscript in the European tradition. </p><p>Our Pericopes were probably executed around 1020 in Salzburg, during the reign of the emperor Henry II. They were obviously done for Hartwig, archbishop of Salzburg, and destined for liturgigal purposes on selected high feast days of the Church year. In contrast to a Gospel Book, this book comprises only the passages from the Gospels which are to be read throughout the ecclesiastical year, the gospel pericopes, thus making it easier for the priest celebrating Mass to find the proper text. </p><p>Combining the Most Beautiful Traditions of Book Illumination </p><p>When Emperor Otto II married the Byzantine princess Theophano, this caused a wave of Byzantine influences in the Arts and Scholarship which in turn enriched book illumination with expressive gestures and Byzantine figure modelling. However, the scriptoria of Central Europe were also exposed to the influence of the remarkable Salzburg school, e. G. The Regensburg tradition in which spirit the precious works of St. Emmeram&#39;s Abbey, such as the Sacramentary of Henry II, were created or the Reichenau school whose rich production features highlights, such as the Reichenau Gospels or the Gospel Book of Otto III. </p><p>New Mobility of Scribes and Illuminators </p><p>In the Middle Ages the monasteries were considered the upholders of civilisation and there was a great mobility between them. At the same time, the scriptoria in the monasteries organised exchanges of scribes and illuminators. This led to the combination of influences from the most famous workshops with those of the new Byzantine movement and finally to the culmination of German book art of the 11th century in one work: the Salzburg Pericopes. Another important reason for the upswing of the Salzburg school was the institutional separation before the turn of the century of St. Peter&#39;s Abbey from the archdiocese and the election of an independent abbot. Shortly after that the scriptorium began to flourish again. </p><p>A Magnificent Manuscript as Spoils of War </p><p>Next to nothing is known about the fate of the manuscript, until the beginning of the 19th century. It neither appears in catalogues of books nor in library inventories. For this period, research has to rely on what is recorded in the manuscript itself. In 1800, when the French occupying forces had cast an eye on the codex, it was first listed in an inventory to trace the treasures of the Salzburg cathedral that had been taken to Paris. After Napoleon&#39;s defeat, the manuscript was moved to Munich where it is kept to this day (at that time, Salzburg belonged to Bavaria). </p><p>Twelve Magnificent Ivory Tablets </p><p>Twelve precious ivory tablets are embedded in the front cover of the red leather binding, most probably a work of the 11th century, which goes back either to artists from the South of France or from the North of Spain. Being the only examples of their kind having come down to us, these tablets were originally designed for a portable altar. However, we do not know when and how they found their way to Salzburg. This luxurious binding is one of the special features in manuscripts from this epoch which are still waiting to be studied in more detail. </p><p>A Sumptuous Example of Book Illumination </p><p>Overwhelming gold inlay or decoration is one of the main features of the Salzburg Pericopes: The beholder stands in admiration before the 19 gilded miniatures, one of the highlights of artistic creation at the time. But also the 70 richly decorated luxurious initial letters and innumerable small gold initials within the text make this marvellous manuscript a true de luxe example of its kind. </p><p>The Fine Art Facsimile Edition - an Exclusive Art Treasure </p><p>The unique and complete fine art reproduction of the Salzburg Pericopes was fostered by His Eminence, Dr. Franz König, cardinal of Vienna. The facsimile comprises 140 richly embellished pages. The pages have been trimmed to the format of approx. 37,2 x 29 cm. The finest details were reproduced as a faithful copy of the original made possible by the most up-to-date technical processes and highly qualified craftsmanship. All leaves are trimmed according to the original and sewn together by hand. </p><p>The world-wide limited de luxe edition of only 180 numbered copies includes replicas of the twelve magnificent ivory tablets in a faithful reproduction of the original binding in dark red kidskin with metal clasps. The de luxe edition has been sold out. </p><p>The standard edition is limited to 300 copies world-wide and comes in a precious dark-red kidskin binding with sumptuous embossings and clasps. </p><p>The Commentary Volume </p><p>On 176 pages, the commentary volume explains the history of the Salzburg Pericopes in a number of comprehensive and interesting contributions by experts of international renown. Editor Prof. Dr. Hermann Fillitz, Vienna; Prof. Dr. Heinrich Dopsch, Salzburg; Dr. Hermann Hauke, Munich; Prof. Dr. Ulrich Kuder, Kiel; Doz. Dr. Martina Pippal, Vienna; Dr. Peter Wind, Salzburg. </p><p>Documentation Kit</p><p>A documentation kit containing three full-sized leaves from the Fine Art Facsimile Edition and an illustrated 16-page information brochure is available for information upon request. </p> .

Bichat distinguished twenty-one different types of tissue, which he classified according to texture and to properties: extensibility, contractility, and the vital properties-- organic contractility and sensibility ("insensible" or "subliminal") on the one hand, and animal contractility and sensibility ("sensible" or "conscious") on the other. Each tissue differed in its diseases, as diseases were nothing more than alterations in the tissue's vital properties. Claude Bernard said of Bichat that he "decentralized life and incarnated it in the tissues" (quoted in Hall II, p. 129), and that his ideas were the source of modern opinions concerning vital phenomena.         Lyrical Ballads

      T. N. Longman And O. Rees, London 1800 - FIRST COMPLETE EDITION (comprising the second edition of the first volume, and the first edition, first issue of the second volume). The preferred edition, for the second edition of the first volume contains the first printing of Wordsworth's famous Preface, "the revolutionary manifesto of the romantic poets of the next generation" and perhaps the most influential work of literary theory in the English language (Printing and the Mind of Man 256). "To the first edition of Lyrical Ballads, published jointly with Coleridge in 1798, Wordsworth prefixed an 'Advertisement' which asserted that the major number of the poems were 'to be considered as experiments' to determine 'how far the language of conversation in the middle and lower classes of society is adapted to the purposes of poetic pleasure.' In the second, two-volume edition of 1800, Wordsworth. expanded the Advertisement into a Preface which justified the new poetry not as experiments, but as exemplifying the principles of all good poetry. The Preface deserves its reputation as a revolutionary manifesto about the nature of poetry. [It serves] not only as a turning point in English criticism but also as a central document in modern culture" (Norton Anthology of English Literature). In addition to the first appearance of the Preface, the second edition contains all the poems in the first edition plus one additional poem in the first volume, and the first printing of the forty-one new poems in the second volume. The poems in Lyrical Ballads proved to be extraordinarily influential, for "no other book of poems in English so plainly announces a new literary departure" (Norton). Lyrical Ballads includes some of the most famous poems in the English language: in the the first volume appears Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", "The Foster-Mother's Tale", "The Nightingale", "The Dungeon", and Wordsworth's "Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey", "The Thorn", "The Idiot Boy", "Simon Lee, the Old Huntsman", and "Lines written in early spring"; the second volume added many of Wordsworth's most characteristic works such as the "Lucy Poems", "The Old Cumberland Beggar", "Michael, a Pastoral", and others. London: T. N. Longman and O. Rees, 1800. Small octavo, contemporary full calf with original red and green morocco labels. Two volumes. Housed in custom half-leather box. Evidence of bookplates removed on pastedowns. Light spotting to five leaves in volume two, otherwise text exceptionally clean; a few skillful repairs to bindings, minor surface imperfection (noticeable only up-close, at an angle) to board of volume II. A rare copy in handsome contemporary calf of one of the most important books in English literature. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(2) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

73 engraved plates on 72 sheets (many folding), of which one is finely handcolored, & six folding printed tables. 18 vols. 8vo, cont. half-calf & speckled boards, flat spines gilt with wheat sheaf & sunburst stamps in alternating compartments, pale blue morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: Maradan, 1800-01. First edition in French of the collected works of Arthur Young (1741-1820). He "was not only the best-known agricultural reformer and publicist of his time, with an international reputation, but also a figure of importance in the political and social issues of the day. He had an extraordinary capacity for work In an age of hazardous roads he travelled many thousands of miles, a high proportion of them on horseback or on foot, and he still found energy to write up his day&#146;s notes and perhaps some letters in his inn room at night. Some modern historians have criticized his agricultural work and have compared him unfavourably with his rival, William Marshall, but it is often overlooked that their approaches were different: Marshall gave an account of the farming of a region as a whole, while Young was not concerned with presenting a rounded picture of contemporary farming; his interests lay entirely in reporting on new advances and condemning old and inefficient methods. His enthusiasm often led him into hyperbole, but he was realistic in appreciating that farmers would only take up what could be shown to pay. Some of his own experiments were misconceived, but in his day the true factors in plant growth were far from understood. As a pioneering scientific spirit he was very widely respected, and his knowledge, wit, and pleasant personality made him welcome in both aristocratic mansion and modest farmhouse."&#150;ODNB. Young&#146;s writings were very influential in France. This is the very fine Schönborn-Buchheim set. A few corners have minor wear or rubbing. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Felis Pardus / La Parthère (Mâle)

Printed by Langlois, Paris 1800 - A beautiful plate with stunning early colour, from Lacépède's "La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle," an important scholarly work and one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century French natural history illustration. A professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History, the French naturalist Bernard-Germain-Étienne Delaville, Comte de Lacépède (1756-1825) was a versatile and precocious scholar who published a number of books on zoology, physics, and music. He was greatly influenced by the pioneering naturalist Georges Louis Marie Leclerc, comte de Buffon, whom he succeeded as Intendant at the Jardin du Roi, which later became the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793. During his tenure, Lacépède completed a comprehensive study of amphibians and reptiles, Historie Naturelle des Quadrupèdes Ovipares et des Serpens , which was published as a supplement to Buffon's magnum opus on animal classification Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière . In 1800-1, he published the first edition of La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle , a thorough survey of the various species of quadrupeds, reptiles and amphibians in the impressive collection of the Museum of Natural History. This magnificent work was comprised of descriptive text written by Lacépède and his colleague Georges L. C., Baron Cuvier (1769-1832) as well as a number of finely rendered plates after the most eminent natural history artists of the period, Nicolas Maréchal (1753-1803), Nicolas Huet (1770-1830) and Léon de Wailly (1801-1824). Painted from life on vellum, these beautifully detailed illustrations faithfully captured the appearance of the wondrous animals in the Paris menagerie. A pupil of J. G. Wille and C. N. Cochin, Simon Charles Miger was a royal academician and a talented engraver, who executed numerous portraits and natural history plates.         Simia Petaurista / Le Blanc-Nez

Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs , vol. 9, p. 611; Anker 275; BM(NH) IV, p. 1517; Brunet III, 725; Nissen ZBI 2353.         JOURNALS OF CONGRESS: CONTAINING THEIR PROCEEDINGS [FROM SEPTEMBER 5, 1774 TO NOVEMBER 3, 1788].

Philadelphia: From Folwell's Press, -1. 1800 - Thirteen volumes. Recent antique style three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Bookplates of Edward Everett on front pastedown of each volume. Some light tanning and soiling, but generally clean internally. Very good. The first collected printing of the Journals of the United States Congress, known as the "Folwell Edition." Prior to the issuing of Folwell's set, the Journals had appeared in more or less annual volumes. Many of those original journals are virtually unobtainable. In 1799, Congress directed that Richard Folwell print 400 sets of the complete journals of the Continental Congress for the use of the Senate and the House of Representatives. This was accomplished during 1800 and 1801, reprinting the annual volumes comprising the proceedings of the Continental Congress from the two Congresses held prior to the Declaration of Independence, then for the duration of the Confederacy, through the adoption of the Federal Constitution in 1788. This set has the important provenance of Elbridge Gerry, the fifth Vice President of the United States, and then to the distinguished American statesman Edward Everett. Everett's bookplate is in each volume, and he has written on the front flyleaf of volume one "This copy of the Journals of the Continental Congress belonged to Elbridge Gerry, Vice-President of the United States with President Madison in his second term. E.E." Gerry served in the Continental Congress and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was an early and vigorous advocate of American Independence, and played a crucial role in the formation of the new United States government, insisting on a bill of rights being added to the new Constitution. "Gerry warned that the Constitution would not be ratified without a bill of rights, and he proved to be right. Massachusetts accepted the document, but only with the strong recommendation that a bill of rights be added. Several other states followed suit, and the Constitution was ratified but only with these provisos. Gerry staunchly supported the new government, helped to frame the Bill of Rights, and served as congressman from 1789 to 1793" - ANB. His name is perhaps most remembered, however ignominiously, in connection with the term "gerrymandering." In his second term as governor of Massachusetts, Gerry redrew district lines to consolidate his party's control in the state senate. "The shape of one electoral district on the map resembled a salamander, and one wit promptly dubbed it a 'Gerrymander.' Hence, the term used today when redistricting results in a concentration of the strength of one political party and a weakening of its opponent's strength" - ANB. Though this was not necessarily a new practice, the name stuck. Gerry ran on the ticket with President Madison two years later, during Madison's second term as President, and died in office in 1814. Edward Everett attended Harvard, then became the first American to study in Europe and obtain a Ph.D. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives, as governor of Massachusetts for four years 1835-39, then U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, President of Harvard, Secretary of State, and Senator from Massachusetts. Ironically his career ended as the long-winded keynote speaker at Gettysburg, preceding Abraham Lincoln's Address with two hours of oratory. He died a year later. An important set with the significant provenance of two of the most important statesmen from Massachusetts in the first half of the 19th century. SABIN 15545. EVANS 15683, 38750 (through 1800). ANB (online).
