[ MANUSCRIPT ] Kunstfarb Buch auf aller Hand mussen Zeugen Gut und Abprobiert Geschriben [sic] von Johannes Kaeck Zeugmacher In Rottweil

Rottweil: not published, ca. 1800 Unique. A good copy in a worn and broken binding; text block split; some spotty staining but otherwise quite good and usable; paper in good, firm condition. sm. 4to.,.An elaborate semi-literate German dyer's manual with many recipes; accomplished in three different hands. Johannes Kaeck, the apparent compiler, lived in the town of Rottweil in southern Germany. Kaeck identifies himself on the elaborate calligraphic title page as a 'Zeugmacher', i.e., a tool maker or leather worker. The contents of the manuscript, however, indicate a very detailed interest in dyes, colors, and fabrics. The manuscript is in two parts. The first is appx. 144 pages in a single hand of German gothic script. This deals exclusivley with dye recipes for colors. The colors are primarily blues, yellow, reds and greens of various hues. They are sometimes accompanied by notations as to the cloth (wool, Turkish wool, linen, and cotton) to be used. The recipes are quite advanced with advice on how to make the dyes permanent etc.. At one point in the manuscript the writer recommends the use of a 'soda' (sodium carbonate) to be gotten at a specific chemical factory outside Magdeburg. At another point he distinguishes between the dyes noted in the manuscript and the manufacture of chemical dyes. The second part of the manuscript is appx. 75 pages. This appears to be in two distinct hands. The content varies with appx. half being given over to various cures and additional recipes and the remainder being mathematical puzzles ( 'magic squares' ), geometry, lessons etc.. It seems likely that at one point this manuscript 'emigrated' to America and was used as a dyer's guide. There are occasional ref's. in English in a later hand that supplement a few of the dye recipes.

A Chart of the World Exhibiting the Track of M. de La Perouse

London: Stockdale, 1800. Handcoloured engraved map measuring 430 x 645 mm., a little browning of the margins, very good. La Pérouse and d'Entrecasteaux. A large and finely engraved map of the world depicting the discoveries of the La Pérouse and d'Entrecasteaux voyages. The map was published to accompany Stockdale's translation of the Voyage in Search of La Pe?rouse, based on the account of Labillardiére, the naturalist appointed to the 1791-1793 d'Entrecasteaux expedition to Australia and the Pacific. D'Entrecasteaux's main task was the search for La Pérouse, hence the map is marked with his known movements until his sojourn at Botany Bay, and also with the tracks of d'Entrecasteaux's own vessels the Recherche and Espérance. The fate of the La Pérouse expedition excited considerable curiosity across Europe, and this fine map printed in London some twelve years later is a testament to the ongoing interest in the ill-fated voyage. The publisher, John Stockdale, was a popular and prolific London bookseller of the later eighteenth-century. He published two of the foundational works in the history of Australian settlement, the First Fleet accounts of Governor Phillip and John Hunter. Stockdale was born into humble means and raised as a blacksmith, but moved to London where he worked as a valet and then apprentice to the publisher John Almon, establishing himself in business when Almon retired in 1781. Stockdale was reputed to be a success in spite of himself, and was known for rather eccentric habits.

        Captain Cook

London: J. Wilkes, 20 September, 1800. Engraving, 161 x 114mm. (plate size), some light foxing. Commemorative portrait. A particularly interesting engraved portrait of Cook, after the original by Nathaniel Dance. The vignette at the base of the oval includes a minute but essentially accurate rendering of Webber's scene depicting Cook's death in Hawaii. The Dance portrait had first been engraved as the frontispiece to the official account of Cook's second voyage. The engraver was John Chapman (fl. 1792-1823), an enterprising engraver and book artist who published portraits of a great number of important figures associated with Australia, including George Barrington, "an exact portrait of a Savage of Botany Bay" (in 1795), and William Bligh. Beddie lists several copies of this print, all of them held in either the Dixson or Mitchell collections at the State Library of New South Wales.

The Soldier's Widow: or, school boys' collection. De jeunes ecolliers font une souscription en faveur de la Veuve d'un Soldat; The Sailor's Orphans; or, the young ladies subscription. De jeunes pensionnaires se cotisent pour assister les Enfans Orphelins d'un Matelot

Published by William Redmore Bigg, London 1800 - A pair of beautiful mezzotints after the sentimental genre paintings of William Redmore Bigg William Redmore Bigg was an excellent genre painter and extremely popular in his day. In subject and style Bigg echoed the work of his master Edward Penny, who also specialized in painting genre scenes with moral overtones. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, and was a continued source of inspiration for contemporary engravers. His most successful scenes involve acts of charity and children. In the first image, nine schoolboys have gathered round a soldier's widow and child, older boys to one side and younger to the other. They have interrupted their cricket and kite flying, and having examined the soldier's sword are now in somber mood as they thoughtfully make a collection to give to the destitute family. In the second, a mother has brought her daughters and a group of their friends on a mission of mercy to the cottage of the sailor's wife and his three orphaned children. With tentative looks of compassion, they offer their gifts to the grieving family. A pair of mezzotints. (The Soldier's Widow) engraved by Richard Dunkarton, and (The Sailor's Orphans) engraved by William Ward. Both in good condition with the exception of small marginal tears. (The Soldier's Widow) has a skillfully repaired upper right corner.

Description des plantes nouvelles et peu connues, cultivées dans le jardin de J.M. Cels

Paris: de l'Imprimerie de Crapelet, [Revolutionary Year VIII], 1800, 1803. Folio, 100 engraved plates each with descriptive letterpress sheet, some light foxing but a most attractive uncut copy complete with the half-title; contemporary green quarter morocco, spine gilt, a few bumps. With Australian plants gathered on the D'Entrecasteaux voyage. One of the most elegant botanical books, this study of "new and little known" plants is the first of the three major works on exotic plants by the great Ventenat, and a superb example of this golden age of botanical illustration. The work includes plates by famed artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté, as well as Cloquet, Laneau, Maréchal and Sauvage. Ventenat's work represents the apogee of the French fascination with exotic botany, and this study is a monument to the work of the botanist and adviser to the Empress Josephine, Jacques Martin Cels. Cels began what would become a successful scientific and commercial venture by cultivating such plants in his famous garden at Montrouge, south of Paris (this book includes a fascinating two-page note by Cels detailing his background, and noting some of the correspondents that helped him in his endeavours, including officers who sailed with d'Entrecasteaux and Baudin, but also English savants such as Sir Joseph Banks and William Aiton). The French interest in plants from the farthest reaches of the known world is confirmed by the fact that no fewer than ten Australian plants are included, of which seven were drawn by Redouté himself. Of the ten Australian plants represented here, five are given their first scientific notice. These Australian plants were grown from cuttings by Cels, who notes that all of them had to winter in the Orangerie. Included are the Mimosa distachya, discovered by Felix la Haye on the east coast of New Holland during the 1792 visit of the D'Entrecasteaux voyage, as well as the Mimosa linifolia and the Melaleuca Hypericifolia (a full listing of the Australian plants is available on request). This was the first great work Cels made in conjunction with Pierre Ventenat (1757-1808), botanist to Josephine, Lycée professor in charge of the Pantheon library and a member of L'Institut de France. Together with Redouté, the third of Josephine's botanical advisers, all three men went on to work together on a successor work, the Choix des Plantes (published between 1803 and 1808), as well as completing the third significant title in this impromptu series, the Jardin de la Malmaison, cataloguing Josephine's own magnificent collection, which also included many specimens from around the world, including some sent to her by Banks, Napoleon in Egypt, Baudin in Australia, and Alexander von Humboldt in South America.

East Hampton Long Island Indenture between Native Americans and inhabitants of East Hampton for the sale of the "neck of land called Montaquit" for the consideration of one hundred pounds sterling

Very good overall. A circa 1800 copy of the original indenture for the purchase of "Montaquit" or Montauk dated August 1, 1660 between native Americans "the old sachem squa late wife of Waiandanoe and her son Wisscombone, Toquaton, Mussuquot, Yourke and gentleman the true and lawful Proprietors of the neck of land commonly Known by the name of Montaquit on the Eastern end of Long Island the one side, and Mr. Thomas Baker, Mr. Robert Rouce (Rouse), Mr. Thomas James, Lyon Gardiner, John Mufford (sic) John Hand and Benjamin Price of the plantation of East Hampton". The indenture describes the location of the land as follows: "the aforesaid neck of land called Montaquit with all and every part and parcel thereof from sea to sea from the utmost end of the land aforesaid to the sea side unto the utmost end of the said land westward adjoined to the [Rouces?] of East Hampton aforesaid ..."& & Waiandanoe (also called Waiandance and Wyandanch) was a sachem born around 1620 in Montauk who became the main "alliance chief", one who maintains friendly relations between his tribe and the local colonists. The Long Island colonists gradually granted him significant financial and military support which was helpful in his ongoing struggles with the Mohegans and Niantics. In the 1650s Waiandanoe was in the midst of a fight with Ninigret, the sachem of the Niantics, in which his (Waiandanoe's) daughter was held captive; Lion (Lyon) Gardiner of this indenture was instrumental in acting as intermediary in payment of the ransom for her. In 1659 Waiandanoe appointed Gardiner as guardian to his young son Wyancombone; perhaps this is the son referred to in this indenture as Wisscombone.& & Lion Gardiner (1599 - 1663) is known as one of the earliest English settlers of Long Island. Gardiner and Waiandanoe developed a long standing relationship on Long Island. Gardiner was a military engineer first hired to fortify the colony of Connecticut; he completed and commanded Saybrook Fort during the Pequot War. Gardiner settled the island now known as Gardiner's Island as a proprietary colony in 1639; according to some reports Gardiner also purchased the island from the Montaukett Indians (Waiandanoe) because of Gardiner's intercession in paying the ransom for Waiandanoe's daughter. Gardiner's royal patent to his island allowed him to "possess the land forever"; since 1639 it has been privately owned by Gardiner family descendants and is the only US property still held by royal grant from the British crown.& & Docketed on back, “Montauk Indians to Thomas James, Robert Bond, & others/ Deed "Copy" Dated 1st Aug 1660 of all Montauk for L100 sterling." Folio, written on two sides, three original folds. Some contemporary cracking of the fold lines. 8 x 13".

With 2 folding maps. Modern gold-tooled red half morocco, marbled boards, preserving the printed wrappers.

Borba de Moraes, p. 57; Rodriques 301; Sabin 2491; not in Welsh. First separate edition of an interesting account of the history of Brazil by Marie Armand Pascal d'Avezac de Castera-Macaya (1800-1875). It is an extract from the Bulletin de la Société de Géographie (the Août-Octobre 1857 issue) with a separately printed new title-page. It includes two folding maps, one of (the greater part of) South America, especially Brazil and one showing the estuary of the Amazon river. This copy was presented by the author to "La Société Orientale": his autograph dedication in ink is on the front wrapper and a library stamp of the Société Orientale on the title-page.In this work D'Avezac disputes several of Varnhagen's views concerning the period of the discoveries. He does not agree that Vespucci's second voyage was made in the company of Hojeda. Varnhagen defended his position in his Examen de quelques points de l'histoire geographique de Brésil (Paris, 1858). He believed that d'Avezac disagreed with his opinions because he supported the French assertions that the boundaries of French Guyana should stretch to the banks of the Amazon. D'Avezac replied to Varnhagen in Les voyages de Americ Vespuce au compte de l'Espange ... (Paris, 1858). It is also a criticism of Varnhagen's work about Vespucci's first voyage. Good presentation copy of a geographical history of Brazil.

The Geographical System of Herodotus , Examined; and Explained?

      W. Bulmer, London 1800 - Thick quarto, portrait frontispiece and eleven maps (ten folding), moderate foxing of maps and preliminary leaves, one map with small marginal tear and slight loss (not affecting image), some offsetting; an excellent copy in contemporary polished calf, rebacked with original spine laid down, spine in panels with large crimson morocco labels. Handsome copy of the scarce first edition of Major James Rennell's magisterial work on ancient geography: 'a monument of laborious research and acute and lucid criticism' (ODNB). This work is famous for its series of detailed and attractive maps of the Near East, the Mediterranean and Africa by John Walker, engraver to the Admiralty. Of particular note is Rennell's map of the voyages of the Carthaginian Hanno the Navigator (c. 500 BCE), a major voyage of discovery in west Africa and one of the earliest voyages to traverse the Pillars of Hercules in an attempt to extend maritime discovery beyond the Mediterranean. Equally interesting is his map and accompanying two-chapter discussion of the purported circumnavigation of Africa by Phoenicians working for Pharaoh Necho II, a feat which Rennell was inclined to believe was possible, certainly insofar as the ancients had a knowledge of Mozambique and Sofala on the east coast. A second related map details the ocean currents from the coast of west Africa around the continent to the Arabian peninsula; Rennell was the authority on ocean currents during this period. The voyage of Necho, described in Pliny and Herodotus, was doubted by Strabo and Ptolemy, but Rennell's detailed account returned the story to some credibility, in a discussion which included his thoughts on Henry the Navigator and Columbus. One of the most substantive aspects of the work is Rennell's continually reverting to his pioneering exposition of the ways in which Renaissance and modern discoveries were influenced by their ancient predecessors. Rennell's aim was an examination and possible reconciliation of ancient geographical knowledge, principally from Herodotus, in the perspective of modern discoveries. This scholarship is synthesised in eleven large and finely engraved folding maps, including the world view of Herodotus in two different projections and the Persian empire under Darius. The location of ancient cities, namely Memphis and Babylon, is treated in detail with attendant maps. James Rennell (1742-1830) was one of the pre-eminent cartographers and scholars of his generation. He joined the navy at age 14 and the East India Station in 1760, undertaking three years of arduous marine survey in far east Asia. In April 1764 he was commissioned to the Bengal Engineers and worked tirelessly on the survey of the region, one of the most ambitious mapping projects ever undertaken by the East India Company. Retiring from active service in 1777, he devoted the rest of his life to historical scholarship and cartographic studies. Rennell was elected to the Royal Society in 1781 and awarded their prestigious Copley Medal ten years later (the same medal awarded to Captain Cook in 1776 for his pioneering study in alleviating scurvy). The book was popular with contemporary readers, selling for threefold the original price within years of publication. A second edition in two volumes in was issued in 1830. RISM H2521. The Creation, with a libretto by Gottfried von Swieten, was first performed at the Palais Schwarzenberg in Vienna on April 29 and 30, 1798. "The first public performance took place on 19 March 1799, at the Burgtheater, with a complement of about 180 performers (not 400, as has been speculated); a benefit for the Tonkünstler followed on 22 December. The work immediately became a staple especially of charity performances, many conducted by Haydn himself, which brought in tens of thousands of gulden. ‘I know that God has favoured me’, he said to Griesinger, ‘but the world may as well know that I have been no useless member of society, and that one can also do good by means of music’. Beyond this, The Creation ‘made history’ immediately and on a pan-European scale in a way equalled by no other composition, owing to its fortunate combination of sublime subject, cultural-historical ‘moment’ on the cusp between Enlightenment and Romanticism, appeal to both high-minded and ordinary listeners, Haydn’s unrivalled stature and the originality and grandeur of his music. His pride in and personal identification with the work, in addition to his usual concern for financial advantage, induced him to publish it himself, selling it ‘by subscription’ all over Europe, with the assistance of colleagues such as Dr Burney; his advertisement (June 1799) reads: “The success which my Oratorio The Creation has been fortunate enough to enjoy … [has] induced me to arrange for its dissemination myself. Thus the work will appear … neatly and correctly engraved and printed on good paper, with German and English texts; and in full score, so that [at least] one work of my composition will be available to the public in its entirety, and the connoisseur will be in a position to see it as a whole and to judge it.” James Webster and Georg Feder in Grove online The edition appeared at the end of February 1800 with a list of more than 400 subscribers. "There is hardly any doubt in the mind of the average music-lover that Haydn's Oratorio The Creation is, tutto sommato, his greatest single accomplishment, and certainly ranks as one of the greatest products of any eighteenth-century mind. It occupies a central position in choral literature and its composition and first performances were the dominant features of Haydn's life in the late 1790s." Robbins Landon: Haydn Chronicle and Works Vol. IV: Haydn: The Years of 'The Creation' 1796-1800, p. 12.

Haarlem, François Bohn, 1800.Original boards (sl. rubbed). With 3 folding engraved maps. X,242 pp.* First Dutch edition; first published in English in the Proceedings of the Association for promoting the discovery of the interior parts of Africa. London 1798. - 'The African Association was founded in 1788. Its activities mark the beginning of African exploration in a systematic way, as well as the furthering of British trade and political prestige on that continent. This association was later merged into the Royal Geographical Society. The first concern of the African Association was the River Niger - where was its source and what was the direction of its flow, etc. The first four expeditions were unfortunate for the leaders, Ledyard, Lucas, Horneman, and Houghton, all of whom either died while enroute or were murdered by the fanatical Moors. The fifth, that of Mungo Park, was rich in geographical results, though he too died on his second expedition' (Cox I, p.388). This book contains the travel-accounts in Africa of Daniel Hougton (1790-91) and of Mungo Park (1795-97, his first expedition); with geographical explanation by James Rennell. - Good copy; very rare.Gay 2788 (English ed.); Not in Tiele.

One of St. Helena's Towers (SIGNED Louis Joutel: an original water color

No Publihsed Date. Late 1800 - This is an original water color that is SIGNED "L. Joutel" (believed to be Louis Hippolyte Joutel: 1858-1916) at bottom right under the tall tree, titled "one of St. Helena's Towers"; believe to be a work for "Land & Book" vol. 3 (hand written on the back of the board); hard board size: 12-1/4 x 10-1/2in, image size: 10 x 8in; colors seem to be black, gray, white with touches of lite brown; no published date but probably late 1800s; the artist did an extension of the drawing on to the board, the drawing is glued to a hard board; text under the drawing reads "runis near Yyre"; still with the artist brush strokes to the edges. CONDITION OF THE DRAWING: a tiny tear in the drawing, some water marks to the left inside the image and some smaller ones at top right of drawing; the hard board has rubbing and a large pin hole at very bottom; condition as described but overall still a lovely image of the artist's work. PLEASE NOTE: There is no reason that this would be a fake (bought with a lot of other drawings of the period of different artist). But I'm not an expert in these period drawings but it does appear to be very similar to his other drawings I have seen & very similar to the signatures. The price there for is reflected appropriately not knowing if this is authentic. From Journal New York Entomological Society. t Vo1 - xxiv "Many excursions were made to collect material in aid of his work, for Mr. Joutel was one of the most skillful natural history artists in America, and his knowledge of insects and their habits was a great asset in connection with his artistic work. His illustrations are well known. They will be found in some of Dr. Alpheus S. Packard's works, such as his Monograph of the Bombycine Moths of North America, in the reports of Dr. Ephraim P. Felt, state ento- mologist of New York; in some of the reports of the New Jersey state entomologist, in the Bulletins of the American Museum of Natural History and in many other publications devoted to entomol- ogy. Mr. Joutel was an illustrator for Harper and Brothers for a number of years, but when able, relinquished his work as a general illustrator and devoted himself to natural history subjects. This gave him a chance to investigate; to go afield in connection with his work, and before ill health prevented, he was active in rearing many kinds of insects, as well as fish, frogs, etc. He even raised some land or box turtles in his little garden. Facts of interest in con- nection with his entomological investigations were often presented at the meetings of the New York Entomological Society up to the year 1910. At the meeting of April 20, 1897, ne exhibited about fifty species of beetles, mostly Longicorns that had been bred by him, and throughout the early published proceedings of the Society there is much information contributed by Mr. Joutel." NHSM; for Funch: Dansk biografisk lexicon V, pp. 492-493. Rare first and only edition of a work on the construction of merchant ships by the royal Danish shipbuilder Diderich Hansteen Funch (1791-1856). Funch was both a master shipbuilder at the royal dockyard, and a reputable author, known for several books on shipbuilding. The work is divided into two parts, the first covering the ship's hull and the second its masting and rigging. It "contains a complete system for the determination of all of a ship's calculated figures as well as its shape. The latter can be ascertained by consulting a table and following certain rules. Ships designed according to Funch's system had parabolic waterlines and curves; all the curves were thus mathematically determined. Funch's system seems to have influenced ship design in the provinces from about 1830 to 1845-50. Sheer draughts from the period show that the ships had parabolic curves as well as the fish shape prescribed by Funch. The interdependent proportions of the hull are also recognisable as the ones stipulated by Funch" (Nielsen). With the bookplate of the Swedish shipbuilder Nils Ljungzell (1885-1964) on pastedown, library stamp on title-page and a deaccession stamp on the title-pages of both parts. Slightly browned, some occasional minor spots, and a minor water stain in the foot margin of the second part (not affecting the plates). Good copy.

The Grand Junction Canal was designed to facilitate water transport from Oxford Canal to London, in place of the uncertain Thames River. The canal was opened in 1800 and pretty well completed in 1805, and its 93 miles of waterway, with two long tunnels, did greatly improve cargo shipping. It is now, like all the canals of England, used almost entirely for pleasure cruising. John Hassell (died 1825) wrote and illustrated numerous art-instruction and topographical works, of which this is one of the most appealing, due to the beauty of the countryside through which the canal passed. In his Preface Hassell declares that the Grand Junction "embraces a variety far exceeding that afforded by many rivers, as combining all the beauties of landscape--the elegance and splendor of the mansion and the villa--and the venerable remains of antiquity.
