      - Antique print, titled: 'Stier naar Potter', Standing Bull, after the painting by Paulus Potter. Aquatint etching and rotel engraving. Plate colouring (a-la-pouppee) on a vellin type paper. Made by A. Liernur after Paulus Potter. Alexandre Liernur (Dutch; 1769-1815) Student of several painters. He went to Rome in 1794 as a "pensionnaire" of the Dutch Prins Willem II. He returned early in 1796 because of the political situation in Italy. In the period 1801-1802 he was in Paris where he made watercolor drawings of paintings in the Louvre. Back in Holland he continued with watercolor, but as one of the first and few in the Netherlands he also mastered the aquatint techniques. This technique was introduced from England and it was a very difficult, expensive and time consuming technique. The aquatints he made after his own designs made him famous. In 1797 he became a member of the Painters Society: 'Ars Aemula Naturae'. His famous aquatint after 'The young bull' by P. Potter was made for the Amsterdam Painters Society: 'Felix Meritis'. Condition: Fair, given age. Several little tears, remargined using contemporary paper backed with acid free archival tape. No margin in bottom. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 26.4 x 17.6 inch. The image size is ca. 25.5 x 17.2 inch. First collected edition, and, for the time and place, an exceptionally nice copy. The verses include several of a patriotic kind, celebrating independence, the Constitution, and one, Peace - a poem published shortly after the ratification of Peace between America and Great-Britain. This includes the following verses: For Peace we sued, in days of deep distress, But sued in vain - our wrongs had no redress: Let Britain, then, her own mad acts repent, Her dwindled power, and fame eclipsed lament .' The French family of New Hampshire might be described as American aristocracy. Heading the list of subscribers (in vol. ii) is John Jacob Astor - the Astor family being one that the Frenchs were to intermarry with. Philadelphia edition, printed "for the public good," following the first edition of the same year printed in New York. The great betrayal, which may have cost Adams the election of 1800. Hamilton originally issued this work with the hope of giving Charles Cotesworth Pinckney a majority over Adams. Hamilton writes of Adams: "...He does not possess the talents adapted to the administration of this Government, and that there are great and intrinsic defects in his character which unfit him for the office of Chief Magistrate." "This and Adams' reply are probably the plainest talk ever indulged in, in print, between two great statesmen. It received many answers, from both Republicans and Federalists" - Ford.       1800's 1800 - AN ENTICING FOREST SCENE IS FEATURED IN THIS GREAT PAINTING. The emphasis is on the foreground tree, which is awash in Fall colors. Although we do not know much about Grant Rice, we know that this is an appealing work of art (we believe - but cannot prove - that Grant is the artist based on the attached paper on the back of the frame). Our understanding is that Grant Rice was also a poet (although we have not been able to verify that). This outstanding work was purchased from an estate in the 1960s by our consignor, and has been kept carefully ever since. The original art sits within an original era frame which measures about 15" x 19", and looks excellent! CONDITION: this original looks quite nice. Probably drawn in the late 1800s. We grade the art itself VERY FINE, and the frame FINE / VERY FINE. The frame has some "crazing" and seems to us to have gold leaf (we are not certain of that, but the gold color of the frame is remarkable). It would look very nice on display, and represents an historic era in American Art History. PHOTOS: we are providing five images. The first photo does a good job of showing the entire framed picture. The second shows the notation on the back indicating that Grant Rice is the artist. The third shows the back of the frame. The other two pics (which may or may not be visible depending on where you see this listing) show a corner detail, and some small damage to the back of the frame (which we feel matters very little since it would not been seen if this picture were hung on a wall).       Richmond: Printed for the Author, and Sold by M. Jones, S. Pleasants, Jun. and J. Lyon, 1800. 184pp. Modern calf, gilt leather label. Light tanning. Very good. The passionate and extraordinarily rare anti-Federalist screed from the "scandalmonger" himself, James T. Callender, suppressed by the Federalists who convicted him for sedition for writing it. Callender was a notorious journalist and political pamphleteer during the Federal period, issuing savage attacks on George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and others. The present work was partially financed by Vice President Thomas Jefferson who was, along with James Madison, actively working against the president and his Federalist cohorts. Jefferson had been particularly impressed with Callender's attack on Hamilton, and wanted a similar work scrutinizing the Adams administration, especially as he was running against the incumbent president at the time. The pamphlet is an attack on the political corruption within the Federalist party and inside the Adams administration, with Callender focusing his ire on the president himself. He labels the president a "hoary headed incendiary," "a man who has deserted and reversed all principles," and describes the Adams administration as "one continued tempest of malignant passions. As President, he has never opened his lips, or lifted his pen without threatening and scolding; the grand object of his administration has been to exasperate the rage of contending parties to calumniate and destroy every man who differs from his opinions...." As a result of this pamphlet, Adams' and Hamilton's Federalist party used the new Sedition Act to prosecute Callender at the height of the 1800 election campaign, citing twenty passages from THE PROSPECT BEFORE US in the indictment (though never naming the book itself). After a frustrating and politically-charged trial stacked clearly against the defendant, presided over by Federalist judge Samuel Chase, who frequently interrupted the defense lawyers, and consisting of an all-Federalist jury, Callender was found guilty. He was fined $200 and sentenced to nine months in prison. Callender was the last and most famous target of the Sedition Act, and the only defendant prosecuted under the law in a southern state. After Jefferson's election the new President pardoned Callender, but refused the writer's request to receive a lucrative postmaster's appointment. Callender then switched sides, revenging himself by spilling the details of Jefferson and his mulatto mistress Sally Hemings. In 1803, while drunk, he drowned in a shallow sidewater of the James River. The shadowy circumstances of his death, combined with the many powerful enemies he had made, led to numerous Vince Foster-like conspiracy theories. The first part of THE PROSPECT BEFORE US was popular and welcome in Virginia at the time of publication, but roundly criticized and suppressed in Philadelphia and elsewhere. Increasing trade with China during the 18th century made Westerners more curious about life in the East leading to a demand for pictures. It was on this expedition that Sir John Franklin discovered the North West Passage, and in which he lost his life". In fact Franklin sailed these two ships through Davis Strait in 1845, passed on through Lancaster Sound in search of a Northwest Passage and spent the winter on Beechey Island. In 1846 he and his expedition made their way through (using the modern names) Peel Sound and Franklin Strait into McClintock Channel, where they got caught in the ice near King William Island. Most of the crew died there, including Franklin in 1847. A few made it on foot to the mainland but were unable to reach any outpost. The last died in 1848. Since no one who saw the ships in these waters survived, the anonymous artist who made the present painting appears to have turned to an 1847 painting of the same ships by John Wilson Carmichael in London, though he did not copy it. Carmichael had earlier made a drawing of an expedition in search of the Northwest Passage by William Edward Parry (who made three expeditions in the years 1819 to 1825, each with two ships), but in 1847 he used parts of his existing Arctic scene as models for the composition of a new painting showing an Antarctic scene of James Clark Ross's voyage with the ships Erebus and Terror in 1842: "'Erebus' and 'Terror' in the Antarctic". Carmichael's drawing and painting survive at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. The central ship in the present painting follows that in Carmichael's painting quite closely and the second ship more distantly. The rocks and ice are similar in general appearance and arrangement but quite different in detail.With some restorations along the edges of the painting and a small scuffmark near the foot toward the left, but generally in good condition.

Jahrhunderts. Gepriesen von seinen Zeitgenossen als Erneuerer der Malerei und begehrt von den Höfen Europa wegen seiner eminenten Begabung als Porträtist, geriet Mengs nach 1800 und insbesondere seit dem späteren 19. Zu seinen Auftraggebern gehörten der kunstsinnige römische Kardinal Alessandro Albani, der auf das Sammeln von Bildern versessene sächsische Kurfürst und polnische König August III. sowie König Karl III. von Spanien. Die vielfältigen Verknüpfungen mit den wichtigen Repräsentanten der Welt der Aufklärung, die durch ihre kosmopolitische Ausrichtung gerade heute besonders fasziniert, werden in einer den Lebensstationen folgenden Darstellung aufgefächert und kommentiert. Mengs war am Hof von Dresden zur Zeit seiner größten künstlerischen Blüte in hoher Stellung tätig. Von seinem Vater ausgebildet, brillierte er schon als Knabe durch seine Pastellbildnisse, die ihm im Alter von sechzehn Jahren die Ernennung zum sächsischpolnischen Hofmaler einbrachten. Seine künstlerische Orientierung an den Prinzipien des römischen Akademismus führte ihn früh nach Rom, wo sein Atelier lange Jahre im Mittelpunkt des Interesses auswärtiger Besucher stand und eine Reihe von jungen und auf Neuerung bedachten Künstlern anzog. Infolge des Siebenjährigen Krieges löste er sein Arbeitsverhältnis mit Sachsen und trat 1761 in den Dienst des spanischen Königs. Durch seine Tätigkeit in Madrid als Freskant und Porträtist, aber auch als Maler religiöser Werke im römischen Stil trug er entscheidend zur Kunstblüte unter Karl III. bei. Die kunsthistorische Bedeutung des spanischen Schaffens resultiert einerseits aus der zeitlichen Überschneidung mit Tiepolos Tätigkeit für den Madrider Hof und andererseits aus der Berührung mit Goya, dessen Karriere Mengs in den Anfängen gefördert hat. Auch als Theoretiker hat Mengs grundlegend zur Formulierung und zur Verwirklichung der Ideale und Ziele beigetragen, die die Kunst seit der zweiten Hälfte des 18. bis ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein geprägt haben. Seine Schüler und Anhänger und die in alle wichtigen Sprachen übersetzten Schriften sorgten dafür, daß seine künstlerischen Prinzipien überall in Europa rezipiert wurden. Durch sein neuartiges Konzept von der Ausbildung des Künstlers hat er insbesondere die Struktur und die Lehrprogramme der damals entstehenden Kunstakademien (Karlsschule in Stuttgart, Turin, Mailand, St. Petersburg, Wien) beeinflußt. Seine 1762 erschienene Schrift "Gedanken über die Schönheit und den Geschmack in der Malerey" gehörte zu den meistgelesenen Anleitungen für junge Künstler. Das Ziel der Biographie ist eine Darstellung der für das Schaffen des Malers signifikanten Lebens- und Kultursphären, die auch übergreifende Aspekte einbezieht, wie etwa die Auseinandersetzung mit Raphael und Correggio, die seine Namenspatrone und seine künstlerischen Leitbilder waren.       Ferrara 1800 - Incisione in rame, mm 660x890. Grande carta geografica montata su tela coeva, divisa in 24 stacchi, incisa da Andrea Bolzoni e pubblicata originariamente a Ferrara nel 1758. Terzo stato, dopo quelli del 1758 e del 1782, che presenta l'abrasione del nome del Baruffaldi dalla lastra e la dedica a Francesco II nel cartiglio di sinistra, con data variata a 1800. Si tratta del migliore studio cartografico del Ducato, con grande ovvia attenzione all'aspetto idrografico. Bell'esemplare, lievi ondulazioni della carta. vedutistica.
