An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His Present Majesty, for making discoveries in the southern hemisphere, and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour.London, W. Strahan, T. Cadell, 1773. 3 volumes. Large 4to (29.5 x 24.5 cm). With 28 engraved charts and views of coasts, bays and estuaries (several large folding) and 23 numbered engraved illustrations (topographic views, portraits, etc., mostly folding). Contemporary uniform mottled calf, gold-tooled spines.

Beddie 648; ESTC T74465; Hill 782; Holmes 5; Mendelssohn I, p. 377; Sabin 30934 ("The first edition, to be preferred for its plates"); Howgego, to 1800, C173. First edition (first issue) of the official account of James Cook's first voyage, edited from Cook's journals by John Hawkesworth. Although Hawkesworth was heavily criticized for his sloppy editorial work and his use of the first person, the account is of great historical significance, especially for its finely executed illustrations. The first volume relates the voyages of Byron, Carteret and Wallis (the discoverer of Tahiti), and volumes two and three are devoted to Cook's voyage. Cook was appointed commander of the Endeavour to sail for Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus and to search for the hypothetical Terra Australis, whose existence had been proposed by the geographer Alexander Dalrymple. In Tahiti he duly observed the transit and then sailed south in search of the southern continent until bad weather forced him to turn north again. In October 1769 the crew sighted the northern Island of New Zealand. Cook spent many weeks surveying New Zealand and his remarkably accurate chart, included in the second volume, remains a major achievement. From New Zealand he steered westward, heading for the east coast of Australia. Cook surveyed and charted almost the whole coast of New South Wales and proved that New Holland (Australia) and New Guinea were two separate islands. According to Holmes there are several issues of the first edition and the "earliest issues lack the directions for placing the cuts and the 'Chart of the Streight of Magellan'..." (Holmes ). Our copy includes the directions for the binder, but lacks the chart of the Strait of Magellan. All volumes have some leaves foxed or browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Bindings scuffed at the extremities and worn in the joints, with a long crack in the joint of the front board of volume 1, but otherwise good.

The Effects of Youthful Extravagance & Idleness; The Fruits of early Industry & Oeconomy

London 1800 - A pair of colour printed stipple engravings. Image size: 23 1/8 x 18 3/4 inches. A fine pair of colour printed stipple engravings by George Morland, the master of English genre painting. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. Morland was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. Morland is considered a master of genre, his beautiful paintings depict with insightful subtlety the tender side of English country life. The subjects of this pair of very fine prints find echoes in a number of earlier works, most notably William Hogarth's series titled 'The Idle.' and 'The Industrious Apprentice'. The present pair are specifically described by Samuel Collings' verses which appear with the title beneath each image.

[N.p., but almost certainly Mauritius. N. d., but ca. 1800]. - Engraving, 5 x 4 inches. Light soiling. A few contemporary ink notations on verso. Very good. Engraved portrait of Governor Anne Joseph Hippolyte de Maurès, Comte de Malartic, governor of the island of Mauritius. The portrait is a line-drawing, done in profile and framed in an oval. Flags flank either side of the oval frame and it is captioned beneath. There is some light wear to the tiny imprint information, causing it to be slightly obscured, but it is possible that the illustrator's name is "Girouai" and the engraver may be "Noiret." The engraving is a bit crude and printed on laid paper. It is likely that it was done shortly after Malartic's death in 1800. A most unusual and exotic image, a tribute to the rich culture of printing that flourished on the remote island in the south Indian Ocean.

Untersuchungen über den Ursprung der Harmonie und ihre allmählige Ausbildung

Folding handcolored engraved frontispiece, two engraved plates (one folding, the other heightened in red), one folding printed plate, & music printing in the text. xii, 52 pp., one leaf of errata. 8vo, cont. marbled semi-stiff boards, uncut. Erfurt: Beyer & Maring, 1800. First edition of this attractive and fascinating book which relates harmony to colors; it is very much a product of early German Romanticism. Dalberg (1760-1812), was an author, composer, and aesthetician. He was "born into a noble family...though physically deformed, he was a virtuoso pianist...He studied composition with Ignaz Holzbauer and travelled extensively in Italy and England. His works about music and his compositions were published regularly in his lifetime and were regarded seriously by professionals... "Dalberg's writings cover such diverse subjects as meteorology, penal law and translations of works on oriental subjects. This wide range of interest that hints at the dilettante is also reflected in his writings on music. Their topics included the music of India, ancient Greek music, newly invented instruments and the history of harmony."-New Grove, Vol. 5, pp. 151-52. Dalberg was very interested in the nature of musical inspiration and in the present work he provides a history of harmony and relates various harmonic structures to certain colors. The wonderful handcolored frontispiece depicts a color scale ranging from deep blue to pale yellow. Dalberg associates diatonic and chromatic scales with darker colors and enharmonic scales with orange and yellow. Fine copy. .

        Liber Chronicarum

More than 1800 woodcuts in the text including a Ptolemaic world map, & one folding woodcut map of northern & central Europe. CCCXXXVIII leaves, 25 unnumbered leaves (without the two blanks). Small folio (300 x 204 mm.), fine smooth 18th-cent. vellum over boards (title with a few very light stains & a very faint old stamp, first & final two leaves with tiny marginal wormholes). Augsburg: J. Schoensperger, 1 Feb. 1497. A very lovely copy, complete with a fine example of the often-missing folding map of northern and central Europe, of the first edition of the "Small Schedel," a reduced version of the large folio of 1493, entirely reset and with the famous illustrations re-cut. Originally published by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg in 1493, the Chronicle is a biblical account of the Creation of the World, ending with the Last Judgement. The many city views, some imaginary, include those of Augsburg, Nuremberg, Cologne, Mainz, Wurzburg, Munich, Strasbourg, Ulm, Prague, Vienna, Milan, Genoa, Rome, Pisa, Florence, Venice, Paris, Lyon, Bratislava, Cracow, Athens, Constantinople, Cairo, Damascus, and Jerusalem. Also included is a reduced Ptolemaic world map. The hundreds of portraits illustrate biblical figures, kings and queens, popes, philosophers, poets, and other figures of historical interest. Interspersed are passages on disastrous events and portents, monsters and other curiosities. Originally the work of the famous woodcutters Michael Wolgemut, teacher of Dürer, and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, Schoensperger had the illustrations re-cut by some of his best craftsmen to fit the new format. Copies of the "small Schedel" are considerably rarer than the original, large folio, editions. All editions are, however, very rarely found in original, unsophisticated state, with most copies that come onto the market defective, and with leaves missing or supplied. The copy offered here is an unusually well-preserved and "pure" example. A few other minor flaws but a very fine crisp copy. Final leaf backed at the time of rebinding in the 18th century (the verso of the final leaf is blank). ❧ Goff S-308. Klebs 889.2. .

[Group of Eight Privately Printed Works]

[London], [late 1800s]. Very Good. A very scarce collection of Lushington's privately printed writings. All were printed by the Chiswick Press. Vernon Lushington (1832-1912) was an English solicitor, a Positivist, an associate of many famous writers and artists, a friend of the Pre-Raphaelites, and the father of the model for Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. He remains virtually unknown today, but recently available family archives reveal how interesting and important figure he was. It was Lushington who arranged the first meeting between his friend Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones. He contributed to The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine and remained a long-time friend of William Morris, often visiting Kelmscott Manor. There was also a close connection between the Lushington and the Stephen family. After his wife died, Lushington's three daughters were taken under the wing of Julia Stephen, wife of Leslie Stephen, and mother of Virginia Woolf. The eldest daughter, Kitty, became the model for the eponymous heroine of Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway. Lushington's views on Positivism, politics, and literature are clearly evident in the occasional poetry he wrote and had printed by the Chiswick Press. This collection comprises: 1) Positivist Hymns, London, 1885. First edition. Original wrappers. 60 pages. 2) Moses. [London n.d.] First edition. Original wrappers. 28 pages. 3) St. Paul. [London, n.d.] First edition. Original wrappers.17 pages. 4) Sonnets on the Positivist Calendar. [London, n.d.]. Original wrappers. 5) Good for Evil: or a Marriage in Kensington Square. [London, n.d.] 7 pages. 6) Remembered Words. [London, n.d.]. Original wrappers. 27 pages. 7) A Slab Tomb in Rome [London, n.d.] 12 pages. 8) Prophetic. [London, n.d.]. 2 pages. Some light wear and browning to the wrappers but still very good copies of such fragile publications. POE/103014.
