The Solide bought furs from Indians on the north American coast in the vicinity of the Queen Charlotte Islands, crossed the Pacific via the Sandwich Islands and the Marianas, and reached Macao. Machand headed for the Île de France (Mauritius), where he had previously arranged to draw money, which proved to be unavailable following the fall of the French monarchy. He returned to a France in the throes of revolutionary tumult; Marchand dies in 1793 and Charles Claret, comte de Fleuriel, another member of the Solide party, edited the material from this "pioneering commercial expedition." Howgego also notes, "Unfortunately, [Marchand's] voyage coincide with changes in the régime in France, with the result that this contributions to French imperialism were largely ignored."This is the octavo issue of the publication; the atlas is in quarto format (also published as vol. IV of the quarto issue, as in the present copy).

Manuscript Treatise - Art of Perspective Drawing - Many Diagrams

Ireland, 1800. South Dublin, circa 1800. "Perspective." Unpublished manuscript on graphical perspective, replete with diagrams and drawings, one of which is coloured. Author's surname "Melotte" inscribed in pencil to front endpaper. 8vo. 63 pages, plus 3 fold-out diagrams, in a fine hand on laid paper made by Joseph McDonnell's Swift Brook paper mill with the crowned fleur de lys shield watermark. Volume measures approximately 12,5 x 19 cm. Later cloth spine over original gilt tooled calf binding. Faint age-toning, otherwise in very good condition, an exemplary uncommon work in the field of graphic arts. An invaluable manual for a nineteenth century architect, artist or surveyor, practical and detailed tutelage on perspective drawing is lucidly explained and meticulously illustrated with 42 manuscript drawings. Progressively increasing in complexity, the treatise first defines ichnography, orthographic projection, the point of sight, the vanishing point, the ground plane, and so forth. Also explained is the founding scientific rule of how the human eye interprets distance and angles to the mind. A section titled 'Perspective Problems' demonstrates how to draw perspective for specific shapes, presenting 24 unique scenarios, including three-dimensional graphical projection and horizon perspective, each meticulously drawn and explained. Excerpts from the manuscript: "Perspective is the art form of drawing objects as they would appear upon an upright flame interposed between them & the eye for instance as they appear upon a plane of glass when seen thro' a window." "If a row of trees be seen in front, they will appear all of an equal size; but if seen sideways, the farthest remote will be the smallest & so in proportion to their distance... The same is observable in a brick wall... The reason of this will be manifested if we attend to the structure of the eye. - the pictures of all objects which we see are painted upon the Retina or back part of the eye... [diagram]" "To put a square in perspective standing with the corner towards the Eye... Draw perpendiculars to the ground line from the points B & C... From the ends E & F of perpendiculars draw lines to the points of sight... [diagram]" "To put a circle in perspective... Inclose the given circle in a square A.B.C.D. & draw the two diagonals; Draw the two diameters EF & GH crossing each other at right angles...[diagram]" "To put a prism in perspective..." End excerpts. Swift Brook Paper Mill was established around 1760 on the river Camaca, and played an important role in the economic and social life of Saggart in South Dublin, Ireland, for over two hundred years. It was named for its location and Jonathan Swift, Anglo-Irish clergyman and author of Gulliver's Travels. (A brook came from Brittas down through the wooded Slade and across lands owned by St. Patrick's Catherdral, Jonathan Swift being the Dean there), in part due to the purity of the water used. It was recognised as a producer of high quality paper, becoming famous for its 'Ancient Irish Vellum' and 'Erin' brands of paper, and later for the production of bank notes and stamps. The McDonnell family owned the mill for over a hundred years. In 1870 the mills were bought by the Drury family. Perspective drawing is a drawing technique used to illustrate dimension through a flat surface. Of the many types of perspective drawings, the most common categorizations of artificial perspective are one-, two- and three-point. The names of these categories refer to the number of vanishing points in the perspective drawing.\. Very Good.

James Edward Smith M.D., F.R.S. President of the Linnean Society

London: Published for Dr. Thornton, 25 March, 1800. Portrait engraving, sheet measuring 465 x 325 mm., at the head of the page a stipple engraved oval portrait of Smith, above line engraved view of 'The Pursuit of the ship containing the Linnaean Collection by order of the King of Spain'; very good, a few very light spots, trimmed to the plate-mark. Author of the first Australian botany. Fine portrait of Sir James Edward Smith, founder of the Linnean Society and author of the first botany of Australian plants.Smith (1759-1828) was one of the earliest proponents of Linneaus in England, and the vignette at the bottom of this portrait shows one of the famous events of Smith's youth, when he purchased the Linneaus collection of books, manuscripts and specimens for 1000 guineas and spirited it away to London where it arrived in 1784. In his later biography Smith stated that Gustav III of Sweden, who had been absent in France, 'vainly sent a belated vessel to the Sound to intercept the ship which carried them', but despite being perpetuated here, the story is likely apocryphal (DNB). In London Smith founded the Linnean Society, becoming its first president, and in the early 1790s was not only the author of the Botany of New Holland but worked on the publication of First Fleet surgeon John White's Journal of 1790.The charming portrait itself is after a pastel by John Russell. A copy of this portrait is believed to have hung in the picture collection of Alexander Macleay, Colonial Secretary of New South Wales from 1826 onwards, testament to prior to his arriving in Australia he had been secretary of the Linnean Society of London until 1825.The portrait was prepared for Robert Thornton's monumental Temple of Flora which began printing in 1799 and was completed by 1807. Thornton hoped the work would surpass the Germans in scholarship and the French in artistry, publishing a work which not included botanical plates but also five portraits of famous botanists, of which this is one.

A Latin edition appeared the same year. Schellenberg illustrated a number of beautiful botanical and entomological monographs and was considered to be one of the best natural history artists of his time. Zimao, the African. Translated by the Rev. Weeden Butler

Printed for Vernor and Hood by S. Rousseau 1800 - FIRST EDITION, with a Bewickesque woodcut vignette on the title, and a tailpiece, spotted and browned, pp. xi, 105, [2, ads], 12mo, modern black morocco backed grey cloth boards by Verona Fine Hand Bindings, Kingston, Jamaica, lettered in gilt on the spine, large bookplate of Stephen Hopwood (the noted Africana collector) Butler, Weeden (1772-1831) did make several translations, but this is probably not one, or at any rate, not from the French, set as it is in Jamaica; moreover, the text is generously interspersed with quotations and footnotes, some in French, as well as Greek, Latin and English. The novella is in effect an anti-slavery tract. The first person narrator is staying with a friend Wilmot from Philadelphia on his plantation in the interior. The American friend is kind to his slaves, lets them work for themselves two days a week and allows them to sell their produce, freeing them after ten years' good behaviour. A Maroon rebellion breaks out, headed by Zimao, not long arrived from Benin, where he had been most treacherously enslaved by the Portuguese. Wilmot arms his slaves, who vow to die defending Wilmot and his family. While the revolt progresses, in full view from the hill-top plantation, a young slave, also from Benin, volunteers, and is despatched to parley with Zimao. Zimao comes to Wilmot's plantation, recognises Wilmot's beneficence, and proceeds to recount his story. He invites Wilmot's slaves to join the rebellion, but they prefer to remain where they are. An Appendix contains further documents, mainly from British naval surgeons, who had witnessed the slave trade at first hand. There was a Dublin edition in the same year, and a second edition in 1807: all are rare. P. xi bears a quotation from Erasmus Darwin's Botanic Garden. (ESTC T75674, BL, O, NYPL)

First edition in French, of William Bligh's account of his voyage to Tahiti as commander of the Bounty, of the mutiny on board the ship and the subsequent voyage of part of the crew in a small boat, "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history" (Hill). In 1787, the English naval officer William Bligh (1754-1817), who had accompanied Captain Cook on his third voyage to the Pacific, was sent off to the Pacific for the purpose of introducing breadfruit trees from the South Sea Islands to the West Indies as cheap food for the slaves. After spending five months at Tahiti, he set sail for the Caribbean by way of Tonga, where the famous mutiny took place. Bligh and 18 of his men were set adrift in the ship's small launch boat and made a remarkable voyage to Timor, more than 6.5 kilometres away. "In the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland [= Australia] as he passed along it" (Wantrup). With library stamp on flyleaf. Prominent waterstain throughout in the lower margin, affecting two of the maps, one map restored and all maps somewhat foxed. Fair copy.         Conversationslexikon mit vorzüglicher Rücksicht auf die gegenwärtigen Zeiten - Vierter Theil

Friedrich August Leupold, Leipzig 1800 - Vierter Theil, Leipzig 1800. 372 S. 8 S. Anhang. Fraktur. Size: 8° [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His Present Majesty, for making discoveries in the southern hemisphere, and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour.London, W. Strahan, T. Cadell, 1773. 3 volumes. Large 4to (29.5 x 24.5 cm). With 28 engraved charts and views of coasts, bays and estuaries (several large folding) and 23 numbered engraved illustrations (topographic views, portraits, etc., mostly folding). Contemporary uniform mottled calf, gold-tooled spines.

Beddie 648; ESTC T74465; Hill 782; Holmes 5; Mendelssohn I, p. 377; Sabin 30934 ("The first edition, to be preferred for its plates"); Howgego, to 1800, C173. First edition (first issue) of the official account of James Cook's first voyage, edited from Cook's journals by John Hawkesworth. Although Hawkesworth was heavily criticized for his sloppy editorial work and his use of the first person, the account is of great historical significance, especially for its finely executed illustrations. The first volume relates the voyages of Byron, Carteret and Wallis (the discoverer of Tahiti), and volumes two and three are devoted to Cook's voyage. Cook was appointed commander of the Endeavour to sail for Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus and to search for the hypothetical Terra Australis, whose existence had been proposed by the geographer Alexander Dalrymple. In Tahiti he duly observed the transit and then sailed south in search of the southern continent until bad weather forced him to turn north again. In October 1769 the crew sighted the northern Island of New Zealand. Cook spent many weeks surveying New Zealand and his remarkably accurate chart, included in the second volume, remains a major achievement. From New Zealand he steered westward, heading for the east coast of Australia. Cook surveyed and charted almost the whole coast of New South Wales and proved that New Holland (Australia) and New Guinea were two separate islands. According to Holmes there are several issues of the first edition and the "earliest issues lack the directions for placing the cuts and the 'Chart of the Streight of Magellan'..." (Holmes ). Our copy includes the directions for the binder, but lacks the chart of the Strait of Magellan. All volumes have some leaves foxed or browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Bindings scuffed at the extremities and worn in the joints, with a long crack in the joint of the front board of volume 1, but otherwise good.

The Effects of Youthful Extravagance & Idleness; The Fruits of early Industry & Oeconomy

London 1800 - A pair of colour printed stipple engravings. Image size: 23 1/8 x 18 3/4 inches. A fine pair of colour printed stipple engravings by George Morland, the master of English genre painting. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. Morland was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. Morland is considered a master of genre, his beautiful paintings depict with insightful subtlety the tender side of English country life. The subjects of this pair of very fine prints find echoes in a number of earlier works, most notably William Hogarth's series titled 'The Idle.' and 'The Industrious Apprentice'. The present pair are specifically described by Samuel Collings' verses which appear with the title beneath each image.
