Bowles's Moral Pictures, or Poor Richard Illustrated

1800. FRANKLIN, Benjamin. Bowles's Moral Pictures, or Poor Richard Illustrated. Engraved broadsheet, illustrated with 24 engraved emblems within oval frames by Robert Dighton, plus a portrait of Benjamin Franklin. Folded, mounted in cloth covers with title gilt on front. Manchester: Bancks & Co., n.d. [ca. 1790]. |~||~||~||~||~| This rare illustrated broadside offers Franklin's Maxims from Poor Richard's Almanack. This sheet is possibly the earliest illustrated compilation of Franklin's aphorisms for sale. The illustrated broadside was produced under the skillful eye of English publisher of prints and maps Carington Bowles. The engravings are of high quality and offer revealing, detailed images of daily rural life in England at the end of the eighteenth century. Carington Bowles (1724-1793) represented the third generation of a family of printsellers in business since the late 1600s. He worked with his father John Bowles (1701-1779) until 1763 when he took over the firm vacated by his aging uncle, Thomas Bowles (1695-1767), which he lead for thirty years. At his death in 1793, Carington Bowles' business passed to his son under a partnership, Bowles & Carver. Robert Dighton (1751-1814) was a well-known painter of portraits and caricatures, as well as decorative subjects, who is regarded as one of the most talented social caricaturists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1770, exhibiting miniature portraits and comic drawings. As an artist, he was first offered consistent employment by the publisher Carington Bowles. Many of his later works were issued anonymously and published by Bowles. Poor Richard's Almanack appeared yearly from 1732 to 1757 and was a best seller for a pamphlet published in the American colonies; print runs typically ran to 10,000 per year. It is chiefly remembered, quoted and reprinted today for the repository of common sense aphorisms and proverbs sprinkled throughout. This sheet of Bowles's Moral Pictures has been backed on silk, with some professional paper repairs to cracks along folds and to edges. Extremely rare. Ford, Franklin Bibliography, p. 69, no. 137.

A tour, performed in the years 1795 - 96, through the Taurida, or Crimea, the antient kingdom of Bosphorus, the once - powerful republic of Tauric Cherson,....

Complete with 2 folding maps, 3 full - page plates, and numerous text illustrations. Dark green half calf with marbled boards, title stamped in gilt on spine; very minor worming on a few pages, some staining to the maps, some tears to first map in the creases, as well as repair with aged tape. Aside from some minor soiling, generally in good condition. First edition of this travel account of Crimea and the Black Sea region, written in the form of letters by a female traveler. The author?s husband, Matthew Guthrie, compiled and translated these letters from French, adding a sizeable Appendix of his own to the volume, describing coins, medals, and other artefacts of the area. Guthrie?s letters include a variety of subject matter, from anecdotes and larger - than - life personalities, to the history of the region and its many cultural treasures. One particularly amusing passage is a description of a whirling dervish ceremony, which she attributes to the use of the poppy: ?I believe it was under the influence of this last juice, that this Tartar group were moving at such a rate.? Another interesting letter deals with Jews in the Crimea. Despite the considerable amount of information presented in this volume, there is very little of the intimacy that might be expected in letters from wife to husband. This probably had to do with Mr. Guthrie?s editorial prerogative - it has been suggested that he added much of the historical material presented (See Papmehl). Maria Guthrie (d. 1800) was a French woman, formerly the Countess Marie de Romont, ?acting Directress of the Imperial [Smolny] Convent for the education of the female nobility of Russia.? She married in 1871, and had two daughters. Matthew Guthrie (1743 - 1807) was a Scottish medical doctor who spent a significant amount of time in Russia under the employment of the Russian government. He rose to the rank of Chief Medical Officer to the Army Corps of Noble Cadets and published a number of medical articles, though his passion seems to have been Russian Antiquities - he published a work on the subject in 1795 (Dissertation sur les antiquités de Russie).

Logik. Ein Handbuch zu Vorlesungen (Logic: A Handbook of Lectures)

Friedrich Nicolovius, Konigsberg 1800 - KANT, Immanuel. Logik. Ein Handbuch zu Vorlesungen (Logic: A Handbook of Lectures), Friedrich Nicolovius, Konigsberg, 1800. TP + [v]-xxiv + [1]-232, Octavo. First Edition, First Printing (Warda 206).Kant never produced a ‘book’ on logic, but taught and lectured on logic often during his years as a professor teaching an introductory philosophy class. The publication of Logik in 1800 was, in fact, a fully authorized collection of Kant's lectures on logic from that introductory course. The collection was compiled from his manuscripts and notes and edited by his students, primarily graduate student, Gottlob Jaesche. While this is not necessarily representative of Kant’s major ideas, it does give the reader a glimpse into the science of logic as Kant understood it, a logic that serves as the architecture for his main works. It also contains elements not directly addressed in his major Critiques. For example, in Logik, Kant directly addresses the distinction between general and transcendental logic, and explains the differences between analysis and synthesis with respect to concepts, judgments, and methods. Therefore, Logik gives the reader a look at some of Kant’s lectures on philosophy, an understanding of the science of logic, and a direct explanation of some of the most important concepts that serve as central to his major critiques.CONDITION: Contemporary marbled boards with cloth spine, titled in gilt. Small ownership signature to upper right corner of title page, barely noticeable. Internally clean. First printing with the comma following "Nicolovius" on TP. A very good or better copy. Early 20th century brown morocco by Riviere, richly gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Stipple engraved portrait frontispiece of Wallenstein by Chapman. In a letter to Robert Southey, written as early as 1794, Coleridge wrote "My God! Southey! Who is this Schiller? This convulser of the heart?

COMMUNICATIONS CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: BEING AN AUXILIARY TO A REPORT MADE BY WILLIAM STRICKLAND... [bound with:] COMMUNICATIONS CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE OF AMERICA: CONTAINING OBSERVATIONS ON THE COMMERCE OF SPAIN WITH HER AMERICAN COLONIES IN TIME OF WAR. [bound with:] AUXILIARY REMARKS ON AN ESSAY ON THE 'COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGES OF OXEN FOR TILLAGE IN COMPETITION WITH HORSES.'

London. 1800, 1800, 1801.. xii,153,[2],[4]; viii,120; [2],53,[1]pp. plus engraved frontispiece to the first work showing the "Hemp Mill at Stover's Town Virginia." Antique half calf and marbled boards. Very clean, near fine. A sammelband of three rare works by William Tatham, English geographer and engineer who left Cumberland for Virginia to seek his fortune in 1769. In 1776, he moved to the Watauga settlement in the Tennessee country and fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War until 1781. Later, he wrote a topographical study of Virginia, then returned to England to publish a number of works on agricultural and engineering subjects (including the three works here). In the first of these works, COMMUNICATIONS CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA..., Tatham critiques Strickland by noting the "mistaken suspicion" that "everything written concerning America must be directed to stimulate emigration to that country." Tatham uses his extensive topographical knowledge and many years of living and working in America to provide a detailed and wide-ranging report on the state of American agriculture. The work includes sections on "the moral Evil of Slavery," the American cultivation of clover seed, tobacco, wheat, hemp, and the best use of horses and cattle. It concludes with a two- page appendix titled "Mr. Jefferson's Opinion upon the Establishment of an American naval force." This text is taken from Jefferson's NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA and begins with the rallying cry, "The sea is the field on which we should meet an European enemy." It continues with an assessment of how an improved Navy could be funded. Rare, with only six institutional copies recorded. The second work, COMMUNICATIONS CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE OF AMERICA: CONTAINING OBSERVATIONS ON THE COMMERCE OF SPAIN WITH HER AMERICAN COLONIES IN TIME OF WAR, is an examination of American agricultural commerce with regard to Spain, "written by a Spanish gentleman in Philadelphia." Latham is credited as the editor on the titlepage, with both Howes and Sabin attributing authorship to Carlos Martinez de Yrujo y Tacon. Martizez de Yrujo was the Spanish minister to the United States from 1796 to 1807, and was a well- respected figure among the diplomatic corps in Philadelphia and Washington. His work here includes two papers on Louisiana, and one specifically devoted to Havana, Cuba. Rare. OCLC only records eight copies. An especially interesting feature of the second work is found in Tatham's "An Account of the Country of Ouachita. Transmitted from a Foreign Traveller at New Orleans, in 1795," found at pp.99-110. In this section, Tathamn records impressions of this "Foreign Traveller," as well as another account by a "French Emigrant," on lands west of the Mississippi River that we now know of as Arkansas and Texas. These accounts touch on the mysterious ancient inhabitants who once lived here, the abundance of food, including maize, rice, potatoes, pumpkins, and other foods that "come to great perfection here," the trees, the wildlife, the minerals, and the fish that swell the rivers. Of particular Texas interest is mention on pp. 105-106 of the Red River, and of the ease of buying cattle in the Ouachita area, because of its "proximity to Taxas [sic], a province of Mexico abounding with these kinds of cattle for want of purchasers." This is an extraordinarily early mention of Texas in the English language, and until this time seemingly unnoticed in the scholarship, even by Streeter. The third work, AUXILIARY REMARKS ON AN ESSAY ON THE "COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGES OF OXEN FOR TILLAGE IN COMPETITION WITH HORSES," compares the labor benefits of oxen and horses. Not in ESTC. Very rare, with only two copies in OCLC. SABIN 94407. HOWES M352, "aa." JCB III:4131. ESTC T53524, T53570. OCLC 166612674, 318814086, 38658648.

A Masonic Eulogy, on the Life of the Illustrious Brother George Washington, Pronounced before the Brethren of St. John's Lodge, on the Evening of the 4th Feb. 5800

Boston: Printed by Brother John Russell, [1800] Second edition. Finely bound in three-quarter dark brown morocco over light brown cloth, with two raised bands to the spine, lettered in gilt. Very good, with some bowing to the boards, otherwise fresh binding, toning to the endpapers, bookplate removed from front free endpaper, light toning to the title page, small hole to page 9/10, scattered offsetting from a previously laid in manuscript letter, a hint of creasing, otherwise clean pages. Overall, a presentable copy of a scarce piece of George Washington ephemera. A Masonic Eulogy is a eulogy given on the occasion of George Washington's death on December 17, 1799 that was originally presented on February 4, 1800 at the St. John's Freemason Lodge in Massachusetts. In this eulogy, Blake lauds both Washington's political achievements and his magnanimous personality: "There has once lived a man, who had power without ambition, glory without arrogance, fame without infatuation; a man who united the meekness of a Christian, with the influence of a despot; a man whose heart did not sink by misfortune and whose head became more steady by elevation; a man who saved his country by his valor, and could receive its praises without assumption." Notably, Washington joined the Freemasons as a young man in 1752 and was a lifelong member; his burial on December 18, 1799, at Mount Vernon included Masonic rituals as well as church rites.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED TO ENQUIRE INTO THE OPERATION OF THE ACTS MAKING PROVISION FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF TRADING HOUSES WITH THE INDIAN TRIBES, AND INTO THE EXPEDIENCY OF REVIVING AND CONTINUING THE SAID ACTS IN FORCE

[Philadelphia]. 1800.. 18pp. plus two folding tables. Dbd. Light scattered foxing. Worming in inner margin of several leaves, not affecting text. Very good. Congressional report on the first two federally operated Indian trading houses, with correspondence from Secretary of War James McHenry, additional correspondence relating to Indian agent John Chisholm, and two large folding tables. The Indian trading houses, known collectively as the Indian Factory System, were a chain of government- owned stores that operated from 1795 to 1822, making a variety of products available to Indians at cost in exchange for native goods. The factories, which were intended to promote peace, offset the British and Spanish influence, and protect Indians from exploitation by private traders, were distributed along the frontier, from Georgia to present-day Michigan, and received large federal appropriations for their operations. For several years after the 1795 and 1796 acts establishing the system were first passed, only two factories were operating: one that was originally established at Coleraine, Georgia and moved to Fort Wilkinson in 1797, and the other at the Tellico Blockhouse on the Tennessee frontier. In the present report, the House committee appointed to review the system states that, while important information concerning the capital stock at the two factories has not been provided by their agents, enough data is present in James McHenry's report and the attached tables to recommend extending the 1796 act for one year, using only existing capital. The act would be renewed again the following year, and in 1802 several additional trading houses would be established. The pamphlet also includes a letter by McHenry relating to John D. Chisholm, who had been granted an Indian trader's license apparently by mistake; McHenry asks that the license be withdrawn and submits a letter by the rather unschooled Chisholm to Secretary of State Thomas Pickering and Pickering's reply which had been wrongly represented as a recommendation for Chisholm. A very interesting set of documents from the earliest phases of the federal Indian trading-house program. EVANS 38824. NAIP w021621. DAH II, pp.238-39.

Autograph letter signed "Bellini" to Francesco Florimo (1800-1888)

      - A leading figure in early 19th-century opera, Bellini was especially noted for his expressive melodies and sensitive approach to text-setting. Francesco Florimo was his fellow-student at the Conservatory and closest friend. ". [His] attachment to Florimo never wavered, and his long and frequent letters to his friend are by far our fullest source of information about his professional and personal life. Florimo remained in Naples as librarian at the conservatory until his death in 1888, but his true calling was as chronicler and guardian of Bellini's fame. In 1882 he published a biography and edition of Bellini's letters; although Florimo's desire to protect and enhance his friend's reputation sometimes led him to censor or even substantially falsify the content of the letters, his portrait of the composer remains valuable and influential." Mary Ann Smart et al in Grove onlineElward won the Prix de Rome shortly after this letter was written with his "Omaggio alla memoria di Vincenzo Bellini," performed at the Teatro Valle in 1835. 1 page of a bifolium. Dated Paris, December 19, 1834. In ink on lightweight paper. With integral autograph address panel. In Italian (with translation). Bellini informs Florimo that French composer [Antoine] Elwart (1808-1877), Bellini's protégé, will be coming to Naples from the Paris Conservatoire and asks that Florimo introduce him to the composer Niccolò Zingarelli (1752-1827) and other important musicians in the city, and "be useful to him if you can."Browned; creased at folds; small pinholes to corners and near central fold not affecting text; remains of former hinging to blank upper margin. With early printed French dealer or auction catalogue description to blank lower right corner of verso.

Voyage in search of La Pérouse, performed by order of the Constituent Assembly, during the years 1791, 1792, 1793, and 1794, and drawn up by M. Labillardiere

London: John Stockdale, 1800. Thick quarto, complete with frontispiece, large folding map (small tear near the hinge), and 44 engraved plates, an untrimmed copy, pages a little browned at the edges; in an attractive binding of modern half calf, double spine labels, gilt, bookplate. The attractive English quarto edition of this important voyage. The first, best and most complete English edition of Labillardière's account of the 1791 expedition in search of La Pérouse, issued simultaneously with a smaller octavo version.Labillardière's was the first published narrative of the extensive voyage, commanded by D'Entrecasteaux, in which Australia was circumnavigated twice, and the islands surrounding investigated for traces of La Pérouse. His account is especially interesting for its descriptions and illustrations of Tasmania, Tonga, New Caledonia, and New Guinea, and includes fine views based on drawings by the official artist Piron. The introduction to this English edition raises the question 'Whether, as has hitherto generally happened, the advantages of civilisation may not, in the progress of events, be transferred from the Europeans, who have but too little prized them, to those remote countries which they have been so diligently exploring? If so, the period may arrive, when New Zealand may produce her Lockes, and Newtons, her Montesquieus; and when great nations in the immense region of New Holland, may send their navigators, philosophers, and antiquaries, to contemplate the ruins of ancient London, and Paris, and to trace the languid remains of the arts and sciences in this quarter of the globe. Who can tell, whether the rudiments of some great empire may not already exist at Botany Bay?'.
