VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE, PENDANT LES ANNEES 1790, 1791, ET 1792, PAR ETIENNE MARCHAND, PRECEDE D'UNE INTRODUCTION HISTORIQUE; AUQEL ON A JOINT DES RECHERCHES SUR LES TERRES AUSTRALES DE DRAKE, ET UN EXAMEN CRITIQUE DU VOYAGE DE ROGGEWEEN.

Paris. 1798-1800. - Four volumes. xii,cxliv,628,[3]pp. plus folding table; [iii]-xvi,676,[2]; xi,[1],431,[3]; [2],viii,158,[2]pp. plus sixteen maps (some folding) and plates. Quarto. 19th-century morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, edges sprinkled. Hinges and spine extremities slightly worn, corners reinforced wtih cloth, minor edge wear. Bookplates on front pastedowns. Occasional light foxing to margins and maps. Very good. An account of the second French circumnavigation and the first French commercial voyage to the Pacific Northwest. Etienne Marchand, commander of the voyage, had learned of the lucrative potential for the fur trade in that region from British captain Portlock. He sailed via Cape Horn, stopped at the Marquesas, and traded along the Northwest Coast in the summer of 1791. He provides detailed descriptions of Norfolk Sound and Sitka, followed by a particularly detailed account of the Queen Charlotte Islands, and further explorations as far as the southern end of Vancouver Island. "A very important and authoritative work for the history of the Northwest Coast" - Lada-Mocarski. From North America Marchand sailed to Hawaii and then to Macao, where he failed to sell his valuable cargo of furs. He then returned to France, where the Revolutionary government confiscated his cargo. The voyage was a loss for its investors. Marchand died in 1793 and Count Fleurieu, himself an experienced Pacific explorer, took over the editing and publication of the material from the voyage, as well as adding an authoritative history of Pacific exploration and discoveries along the American coast. Considerable text is also devoted to natural history exploration en route. The detailed maps are of Alaska and the Northwest Coast, the Marquesas, and Hawaii. An important work, seldom found in the preferred large paper format. HILL, pp.105-6. STREETER SALE 3496. LADA- MOCARSKI 54. HOWES F195, "b." EBERSTADT NORTHWEST COAST 111. WICKERSHAM 6622. Vida, e virtudes do Admiravel Padre Joam Cardim da Companhia de Jesu Portuguez natural de Vianna de Alentejo. Évora, University Press, 1659. 4to. With engraved frontispiece portrait of the Jesuit João Cardim. Contemporary goatskin parchment, red sprinkled edges.

De Backer & Sommervogel I, col. 26; cf. Howgego, to 1800, C39; Lach & Van Kley, p. 348, 378. First edition of a biography of the Portuguese Jesuit João Cardim, written by Sebastien d'Abreu (1594-1674), also paying attention to his two uncles who were missionaries in the Far East and Brazil. His uncle Antonio Francesco Cardim (1596-1659), travelled for a few years as a missionary in China, Japan and other areas in the Far East. He was the Jesuit superior in Macau when the shogun of Japan forbade all voyages from Macau to Japan. "Cardim ... sent to Lisbon a report that was printed in 1643 of the execution at Nagasaki in 1640 of four Portuguese emissaries sent to Japan from Macau.Translations of this account quickly appeared in French, Italian and Dutch. ... In 1645 he published at Rome his Relatione of Japan in which he also deals at length with the missions in Macao, Tongking, Cochin-China, Hainan, Cambodia, and Siam, placed within the Jesuit Province of Japan where he had worked from 1623-1638" (Lach & Van Kley). The other uncle, Fernão Cardim (d. 1625), was an influential Jesuit in Brazil, one of the first who went to the mission posts there. He became director of a college in Rio de Janeiro and was made "provincial" of the local area.Lacking final endpaper and the bookblock partly detached from the binding. Some of the red paint from the sprinkled edges is found in the margins of the title-page and the engraved portrait and a few leaves are slightly browned. Otherwise still in very good condition.

Thirteen original drawings for The Canterbury Tales

1800. Stothard, Thomas. 12mo. 15ff. One page of handwritten text followed by thirteen pen-and-ink drawings by the English book illustrator Thomas Stothard. According to the text, these drawings were "sketched" by Stothard "from old wood engravings meant to illustrate the characters of Chaucer." Stothard was a prolific illustrator, who has been credited with over five thousand contributions, including Robinson Crusoe (1790); Young's Night Thoughts (1802), and an edition of Burns's Poems (1802). It is likely this work was a study for a watercolor painting showing all the Canterbury pilgrims that he executed for the engraver Robert Cromek in 1806. This commission caused a rift between Stothard and William Blake, who had been friendly. Blake and Cromek had already scuffled over the illustrations to Robert Blair's The Grave, and as Blake was preparing to engrave his own illustration to the Canterbury Tales, Cromek suggested the idea to Stothard, whose resulting work became more popular than Blake's. The handwriting in the front of this volume may indeed be Cromek's, as his initials can be made out below; this hypothesis is further strengthened by the presence of the signature of Cromek's son, Thomas Harley Cromek. A fascinating work with considerable artistic intrigue, bound in contemporary full vellum, decorated in gilt.

Plan d'une partie du cours de la Riviere de Saigon depuis cette ville jusqu'a son embouchure. Plan du port de Candiu situe a la cote de Tsiompa.

Paris: Depot General de Marine. unbound. Sea chart. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 19" x 27.5 This unusual circa 1800 sea chart by the Depot de la Marine depicts the Saigon River in modern day Vietnam. The map, divided into two sections, follows the course of the river from Saigon City (Ho Chi Minh City) south to the mouth of the Saigon River and Vung Tau. The port of Candiu is identified on the coast of Tsiompa. Tsiompa refers to the ancient Indochinese kingdom of Champa which existed between the 2nd and 17th century. Vountao (Vung Tao) is exceptionally detailed with beautifully rendered topography to the level of individual fields and plantations. Depth soundings are labeled though out the river and coastal features are noted. The Royal Palace of Saigon is also detailed.

Vung Tau, originally known as Tam Thang, earned its name (which means 'anchorage') after European trading ships started frequenting the region during the 14th and 15th centuries. During the late 18th and early 19th century, Malay pirates made this a base. The French Indochinese government named it Cap Saint-Jacques (also noted here). The map is in good condition with minimal wear along the original centerfold. Minor offsetting and some spotting in the margins. Wide margins with original plate mark visible.

Depot General de la Marine was a French hydrographic mapping organization similar to the United States Coast Survey or the British Admiralty. Some of the important cartographers associated with the Depot include Jacques Nicholas Bellin and Riobert Bonne. This is a wonderful example of the Depot's extensive work.

"The romantic and picturesque scenery of North and South Wales, having within these few years been considered highly noticeable and attractive, I was induced to visit this Principality with my friend Mr. Rowlandson, whose abilities as an artist need no eulogium from me. We left London in August 1797, highly expectant of gratification: nor were our fullest hopes in the least frustrated. At the time of our excursion, I had no idea of submitting to the public any of our minutes or sketches; but as several of the subjects amongst our scenery have become topics of admiration, as well to the artist as cursory traveller, I have in the following sheets endeavoured to give a faint idea of their beauties; accompanied by some short remarks on the road, merely intended as a sort of Vade Mecum to stimulate the readers to further and more important inquiries; and in order, if possible, that they may, by being apprized of many inconveniences we experienced, be enabled to avoid them." (Introduction).Wigstead was an English Magistrate amateur painter & caricaturist. He was a close personal friend of Thomas Rowlandson, whom he accompanied on sketching trips to the Isle of Wight (1784), Brighton (1789) and Wales (1787) which resulted in subsequent publications for which Rowlandson provided the illustrations. James Edward Smith M.D., F.R.S., President of the Linnean Society; The Pursuit of the Ship containing the Linnean Collection by order of the King of Sweden

London: Published for Dr. Thornton, 25 March, 1800. Slight toning, very good condition.. Stipple engraved oval portrait of James Edward Smith above line engraved view of 'The Pursuit of the ship containing the Linnean Collection by order of the King of Spain', on the one sheet 480 x 350 mm., mounted. Fine portrait of Sir James Edward Smith, founder of the Linnean Society and author of the first botany of Australian plants. Smith (1759-1828) was one of the earliest proponents of Linneaus in England, and the vignette at the bottom of this portrait shows one of the famous events of Smith's youth, when he purchased the Linneaus collection of books, manuscripts and specimens for 1000 guineas and spirited it away to London where it arrived in 1784. In his later biography Smith stated that Gustav III of Sweden, who had been absent in France, 'vainly sent a belated vessel to the Sound to intercept the ship which carried them', but despite being perpetuated here, the story is likely apocryphal (DNB). In London Smith founded the Linnean Society, becoming its first president, and in the early 1790s was not only the author of the Botany of New Holland but worked on the publication of First Fleet surgeon John White's Journal of 1790.The charming portrait itself is after a pastel by John Russell. A copy of this portrait is believed to have hung in the picture collection of Alexander Macleay, Colonial Secretary of New South Wales from 1826 onwards, testament to prior to his arriving in Australia he had been secretary of the Linnean Society of London until 1825.The portrait was prepared for Robert Thornton's monumental Temple of Flora which began printing in 1799 and was completed by 1807. Thornton hoped the work would surpass the Germans in scholarship and the French in artistry, publishing a work which not included botanical plates but also five portraits of famous botanists, of which this is one. The portraits do seem to have also been available separately, which might explain the particularly large margins of this sheet.

James Edward Smith M.D., F.R.S., President of the Linnean Society; The Pursuit of the Ship containing the Linnean Collection by order of the King of Sweden.

London: Published for Dr. Thornton, 25 March, 1800. Slight toning, very good condition.

printed by Edmund M. Blunt, (Proprietor), Newburyport, (Mass.) 1800 - Second edition; 8vo, pp. xii, [13]-570, [2] Blunt ads; 8 copper engraved plates (the frontispiece with a 2" diameter (oil?) stain that pervades through to p. 20); original calf-backed marbled boards, worn and rubbed, joints cracked, spine with elongated crack, but preserving the original red morocco label; a fair, complete, unrestored, and relatively clean copy. While this book is based on Moore, it was substantially revised and enlarged for the American market by Blunt and first published in 1799. By 1802 Bowditch had revised it further and made it his own, adding the word "American" to the title. The work contains detailed sections on all aspects of mathematics, mathematical and navigational instruments, astronomy, geography, mensuration, surveying, the moon and tides, compass variations, ballast, piloting and seamanship, salvage, marine insurance, cargo, bills of exchange, etc. Evans 37991; Sabin 50412. A LIBRARY for the Baby House.

Volumes 1 - 4 [all published ?] Each volume [32] pages, the first two and last one blanks; each illustrated with 14 full-page engravings; text in both French and English. Original plain paper-covered boards. 51 x 41 mm [2 x 19/16 inches]. Tiny area of rubbing to the title-page of volume 2; else fine. Not known to Alderson, and, so far as we can ascertain entirely unrecorded. The Cotsen Children's Library has five volumes [of six] of a later issue by Edward Wallis, [John's son], but they differ slightly, each volume having two title-pages, one in French and another in English, and they were issued in wooden box, much in the style of other boxed libraries of the day. However they are the only known examples of this later issue. We suspect the four volumes we are offering were also issued in some sort of box, now lost..

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
