Fair copy letters, string-bound, compiled by Alpheus Packard, from wealthy American-born physician and loyalist, Silvestor Gardiner, beginning May 9, 1776, "my fears of the Troops leaving the Town of Boston, which they did on the 17th day of March in such a precipitate manner as gave the friends of Government only four or five days notice, which put them under the necessity of leaving almost every thing they had."

Various, 1800s. 7.75" x 9.75". "19th Century Fair Copy String-Bound Book of the letters of Silvester Gardiner, Compiled by Alpheus S.Packard, Sr., fifty plus pages, dated between 1776 and 1785. Pages are toned and unnumbered. Fine condition. The first letter was written from Halifax, Nova Scotia - ""this miserable place"" - shortly after Gardiner, loyal to the British crown, had fled Boston and the American rebels. He explains in his first letter how he and the other loyalists left Boston and arrived at Halifax. It began with his ""fear of the Troops leaving the Town of Boston, which they did on the 17th day of March in such a precipitate manner as gave the friends of government only four or five days notice, which put them under the necessity of leaving almost everything they had. As no vessel or Seaman were to be found so suddenly to transport themselves with their effects, which threw them into the utmost distress; indeed the General gave them all the assistance he could by assigning them some places in the Transport, but then there was not room to carry off any of their effects, and but very little of their household furniture. And what they did was chiefly destroyed or stolen by the Soldiers or Sailors. On their arrival at this miserable place, it was with the greatest difficulty, they could get houses to screen themselves from the weather. Housed did I say, they hardly deserve the name. The wretched inhabitants took every advantage of our misfortunes."" Throughout the book, Gardiner also writes of ""the Rebellion""; the military leadership by the Howes; ""this poor nation"" of England (which has ""not only the Americans to contend with but France & Spain""); and much more. Worthy of further research.Silvester Gardiner (also Sylvester) (1708-1786) was a physician who became a wealthy merchant importing drugs to the colonies. He was born in Rhode Island and remained loyal to England throughout the Revolutionary War. He was in Boston when the British Army evacuated the city in March 1776. When he and other loyalists fled to Canada, they lost their possessions to the American rebels. From Canada, Gardiner sailed to England, where he lived during the remaining years of the war. His original letters were written from various places, including Halifax, Nova Scotia; Poole, England; and London. In 1785, after the war was ended, he returned to Rhode Island where he died the next year. Alpheus S. Packard, Sr. (1798 -1884) served as a faculty member of Bowdoin College for sixty-five years and was trained as a minister, educator and librarian. He also served as acting President of Bowdoin College the year before his death."

SAILING DIRECTIONS FOR THE KATTEGAT TO BE USED WITH THE NEW IMPROVED CHART CONTAINING DESCRIPTIONS OF THE LIGHTS, SOUNDINGS, GROUNDS AND SHOALS, TOGETHER WITH PLANS OF SEVERAL HARBOURS, PROSPECTS AND VIEWS OF LAND PUBLISHED FROM THE ROYAL DANISH MARINE ARCHIVES FOR DRAUGHTS AND CHARTS TRANSLATED FROM THE DANISH ORIGINAL

      - Copenhagen, 1st. Eng. translation ed., 1800. Printed for the Archives by J. F. Schultz, Director and Bookprinter. 68 pp., illustrated with 5 charts (2 fldg.,) ; 1 engraved vignette ; & 6 engraved views, etc., (3 fldg). Re-bound in ? red morocco ; raised bands ; fine marbled boards & endpapers (being Spanish Moiré – creating a beautiful 3-d wave effect) ; fine laid rag paper. 27 x 21cm. Bookplate. FINE. An English translation of an important Danish work published in Copenhagen in 1800 and providing detailed sailing directions for the Kattegat with descriptions of lights, soundings, grounds and shoals, and illustrated with twelve fine engravings of charts and views (five of them folding). It is inconceivable that this book was not carried to sea a year later when Sir Hyde Parker and Lord Nelson set sail for the Baltic, resulting in the Battle of Copenhagen. It forms essential and the most up-to-date instructions to navigators which hitherto, even to the most experienced seamen, were entirely unknown. There was no thought of Denmark and England going to war against each other in 1800, otherwise the Danes might have thought twice about an English translation. Their decision to produce one was based on the considerable amount of trade Britain had with the Baltic. In his Preface the author points out that Frederick Schneider’s translation is "litteral" – simple plain language as better intelligible to seamen, thereby retaining few deviations from the Danish original, even keeping descriptions of parts of the Danish shore where only small coasting vessels would be found. The Sailing Directions were first published in the Danish language in 1799. Where some Danish terms are used, the English translation is listed. The book covers every point, bay, island, anchorage, coastline, entrance, fiord, light, etc. The paper used is of high quality and as crisp as the day it was made. The printing is also fine, and the plates are of superior quality and in fine condition. The book is bound in attractive three-quarter red morocco with green, red and gold Spanish Moiré papers to the boards and endpapers. (COPAC only lists 1 copy, in the NMM Library). FINE copy. RARE.         An Account of an Embassy to the Kingdom of Ava, Sent by the Governor-General of India, In the Year 1795 [DEDICATION copy]

London: Printed by W. Bulmer And Co. Cleveland-Row, St. James's; And Sold by Messrs. G. And W. Nicol., Booksellers to His Majesty, Pall-Mall; And J. Wright, Piccadilly, 1800. First edition. Leather Bound. A dedication copy, inscribed to half-title: 'From The Author to Ed. Paul Pilcher 12 March 1805.' Pilcher likely the Edward Paul Pilcher who served as a captain in the 32nd Foot. Dedication copies are uncommon. Fol. 31cm x 24-1/2cm. A later half-calf over original marbled boards, gilt titles to spine. xxiii, [errata], folding map, 503, [1, directions to the binder]. Valued for the first accurate chart of the Irrawaddy River, and one of the most detailed accounts of Burma and the Kingdom of Ava. Symes's prose creates a still enthralling account of his seven month long mission. The first map, general Map of the Birman Empire, intact, with Draught of the River Irrawaddy also in bright, sound condition but with a small tear to one side, not affecting design. With half-title. 18 plates accompanying text, a further eight botanical plates to rear. The main plates were by an Indian artist, Singey Bey, who accompanied the mission, with the botanical plates by Francis Buchan. Dampstaining to some of the plates with light occasional offsetting to adjacent pages but the botanical plates all clean and fresh; browning to page edges, top edge dusted, some occasional spotting to pages, but on the whole a very clean text block. Later endpapers, a few rubs to leather around spine ends, tips, small crack developing to front hinge - nothing serious - with binding tight and firm and the marbled boards unusual in that some faint handwriting can be seen coming through from the presumably recycled paper that had been used. A gift note to second blank, dated 1961.

        Innocent Recreation

London: Published by Testolini, 1800. Colour-printed stipple engraving. Very good condition apart from some mild mat burn and a few tiny nicks at the edge of the top margin. A delightful, intimate genre scene in a domestic interior. The scene depicted in this charming print is an allegory of innocence. It pictures a young girl, who herself personifies virtue, engaged in the innocent activity of feeding her pet fowl. Clad in a white dress, she smiles and gazes at the viewer with a wide-eyed expression of childish wonder as she sprinkles breadcrumbs over the beak of a young bird awaiting the snack in anticipation, as its mother looks on approvingly.

1800. 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 4to. Beiliegend eigenh. adressierter Umschlag an Ferdinand Hauschild.

13 erotic watercolours. [Probably Vienna, first half of 19th c.].

1800. 13 ff. of coloured pencil drawings, numbered 3-5, 8, 15-16, 18-20, 2[1] (?), 22, 31 and 32. About 22 x 16 cm each, matted. Curious collection of obscene watercolours, apparently a product of the Austrian Biedermeier period. Three drawings poke fun at the then-famous vaudevillian athlete, juggler and balance artiste Rappo (the Innsbruck-born Karl von Rapp, 1800-53), giving quite a new meaning to the term "show business". Others employ the setting of a trade fair, depicting the city harlots preparing for work and travelling salesmen in pursuit of lewd entertainment. While nearly all drawings are accompanied by tongue-in-cheek couplets, one has no caption, and another is simply entitled "table-tipping" (not the séance kind). In the circus drawings, Rappo's name was first obscured as "R. Appo" and then - rather crudely - changed to the familiar spelling. - A fine, well-preserved collection, apparently a substantial part of a formerly larger set.

Voyage de la Propontide et du Pont-Euxin. Paris, Dentu, 1800-1802.

1800. 8vo. 2 vols. XII, 168 pp. (4), (169)-416 pp. With 6 folding engr. maps. Contemp. marbled calf with gilt cover borders and double labels to gilt spines. Marbled endpapers. Variant issue of the first edition, probably the second issue altogether. "Le Chevalier had assisted Choiseul-Gouffier in his 'Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce', and was then sent to Jassy to observe Russian troop movements. His work is an account of a journey round the shores of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea" (Atabey). While Chatzipanagioti-S. differentiates between the first and the second edition, the present variant is not described: the verso of the half-title of vol. 1 shows only the "avis au relieur"; p. 168: "Fin du tome premier"; p. 169 (beginning of text in vol. 2) is unpaginated. Thus, this apparently constitutes the second issue of the first editon. - Lechevalier stood in the service of Choiseul-Gouffier; from 1787 onwards he accompanied Alexander Ipsilanti on a tour of the Mediterranean which lasted several months. The maps show the Sea of Marmara, the Dardanelles, the Black Sea, the Bosporus, Constantinople, and Brussa. - Both title pages have contemporary ownership stamps ("S" with princely crown); a few minor tears to maps have been professionally repaired; some staining to title page of vol. 2. A prettily bound copy, formerly in the Ottoman collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer. Blackmer 995. Weber II, 649. Atabey 697. Graesse IV, 137. Cf. Chatzipanagioti-S. 538f.

The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments: translated out of the original tongues; and with the former translations diligently compared and revised.

An early American Bible with a fascinating creation story. According to Margaret Hills, "The ruby type of this edition is said to have been set up in Scotland and imported [by Hugh Gaine] in page form, ready for printing. The type was apparently kept standing." It is said that Isaiah Thomas bought five hundred copies of this Bible in sheets, due to the delay in the completion of his school edition of the Bible. Provenance: Timothy Hall's family bible ca. 1800). Later in the Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Evidence of Readership (or Something else -- Engagement?): Former owners and their children have filled the blank endpapers with names and scribbles in pencil and ink; the New Testament title-page verso and an endpaper record important family dates, such as Timothy Hall's marriage to Elizabeth Morgan and Harry Harmon Hall's birth in 1801, while endpapers and blank sections of the Bible have provided scribble space and handwriting practice for Harry and a presumably different Timothy. => All of this endearing, none of it off-putting.

Manuscript Diary - The Pope's Trusted Master of Ceremonies - Life of Borgia - Pope Alexander VI with RARE Papal Grosso Coin

Vatican 1800 - Rome, circa 1800. Della Vita di Papa Alessandro VI. [The Life of Alexander VI] Primary source manuscript fair copy biography of the Renaissance era's most controversial Borgia Pope Alexander VI drawing directly from the diary writings of his Ceremoniere Johann Burchard (c.1450-1506), protonotary apostolic (PA), made circa 1800 by an unidentified historian or Vatican scholar, centering on the successes of the Pope and featuring the famous yet virtually unobtainable firsthand account of the disputed Papal orgy in the Vatican in 1501, and a dedicatory preface. Text is in Italian. 202 pages with wide margins, the text area measuring approximately 12 x 23 cm. Qto. Half calf over marbled boards, titled and lined in gilt to spine. Bound by bookseller J. Griffiths, 4 Argyle Building, Bath, England, in the early nineteenth century. Original bookbinder's label to front pastedown. Volume measures approximately 27,5 x 20,5 cm. Slight wear to boards, otherwise excellent good condition, content penned in an immaculate hand, leafs crisp and bright, a fine example of a scarce primary source. Together with a rare original Alexander VI Borgia papal grosso coin, made at the Ancona papal Mint during his papacy 1492-1503. Recto features a tiara and keys over a shield of papal arms, and circumference text ALEXANDER VI PONT MAX. Verso shows Saints Peter and Paul standing facing one another, each holding scriptures, one with a sword, the other a key, and text S PAVLVS S PETRVS. Some loss to extremity as is usually the case, otherwise very good condition, retaining a strong impression, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity by a numismatics expert in Treviso. ITALY, Papal Coinage. Alexander VI (Roderic Llançol de Borja i Borja). 1492-1503. AR Grosso of Rome. Measures approximately 25mm in diameter. CNI XV 10; Muntoni 23; Berman 538. Violenza - guerra - politica - lettera - religiosi pieta - Violence, war, politics, private letters, religious piety - and let us not forget one evening of explicitly immoral sexual revelry - Much of the written text in this volume would be readily confiscated and forever denied by the Papacy who abhor the Libertines that once carried and tainted the sacred title of Pope. This manuscript is a rare surviving scholar's work drawing from Burchard's observations and direct participation in the events and ceremonies of the Vatican, centering largely on Borgia Pope Alexander VI, (Rodrigo Borgia, 1431-1503) who came from Spain, and whom Burchard served the longest. A substantial amount of information also concerns the illegitimate children of Alexander VI, mainly his son Cesare Borgia, whom he made cardinal and prince. A most captivating diary account indeed, complexities of the notoriously opportunistic Borgia affairs unfold in the words of a genuine fifteenth century Vatican resident, the Master of Ceremonies himself, who was not only present but played an important role in events, masses, ceremonies, etc. Notable observations herein include the forming of political alliances, some inexorable acts of revenge, and shocking corruption of the papacy at the dawn of the Protestant Reformation. The description of the scandalous and gratuitous soirée known as the "Banquet of Chestnuts" begins on page 145 and mentions Alexander VI's mistress Vannozza dei Cattanei, suggesting her as the subject of the Pope's motivation for hosting the party, evidently to create jealousy. [Excerpts from the text]. "di modo che attenuazione della [.] Vannozza fece. nelle santi del Vaticano un [.] banchetto. le Dame della citto di Roma. Ballavano alla presenza del Papa... vicario di Christo... che le quali nel ballare facevano atti si disonesti... canaglia, non che di un Pontefice, il quale ne ... per maggiore... ... e consolazione, che diede ordine... di notte [...] nelle stanze del Vaticano alla presenza del Papa." [To get the attention [?] of Vannozza... in the holy Vatican... was a banquet... the Ladies of citto of Rome ... They danced to the presence of the Pope... vicar of Christ... such acts were in the dance is dishonest... rogue, not that of a Pontiff, who will... for more... and as consolation he ordered... at night... in the rooms of the Vatican in the Pope's presence.] Numerous historical leaders, religious and political, appear in the volume, Pope Innocent VIII (predecessor to Alexander VI), Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Ferdinand I of Naples, Gian Paolo Baglioni an Italian condottiero and lord of Perugia, Cardinal Orsino Orsini Migliorati (1473-1500) who was the husband of a mistress of Pope Alexander VI, Italian military commander Giulio Orsino, to name but a scant few. The author discusses La Guerra di Carlo VIII [Charles VIII's Italian War 1494-98], Cesare Borgia being named Duke of Valentinois in 1498, and a report on the papal conclave of September 1503 during which Pope Pius III was elected to succeed Pope Alexander VI. The preface of this work suggests that the writer was a Catholic scholar or historian closely connected to the King of Spain, possibly employed in his court, and transcribed these pages directly from Pope Alexander VII's commissioned copy of Johann Burchard's diary which was situated in the library of the Palazzo Chigi in Rome at the time. The writer is anonymous although his respect for the Spanish Borgia Pope, and his dedication to "Sacra Real e Cattolica Maestà" [Sacred Royal and Catholic Majesty], indicates that the recipient was a Spanish sovereign, and so, too, the writer was surely Spanish. [I humbly present to his Royal hands, not for praise from Your Catholic Majesty, but purely to uncover what were the most effective means of greatness of Don Rodrigo Borgia, now Pope Alexander VI... sublime and high dignity... and manners... This will be a pure testimony of my most humble service professed to Your Majesty... as [xx] of the Palace, that year recorded memories to preserve...] For over 150 years, Burchard's diary remained concealed, until Rodrigo Borgia's papal namesake, Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi, 1599-1667) had a scribe make a copy of it for his kinsman, Flavio Chigi (1631-1693), who subsequently, at the end of the seventeenth century, placed it in the enormous library of the Chigi Palace, along with the numerous manuscripts, miniature books and signed documents that he and his uncle had amassed. [Flavio was a powerful Italian Catholic Cardinal from 1657, and was also a Vatican Librarian from 1659 to 1681.] The contents of the diary thus became accessible to historical and liturgical students for a time. As these seventeenth century scholars sought information in its pages, their extracts from it have appeared now and again, albeit a most infrequent occurrence. Johann Burchard (c.1450-1506), also spelled Johannes Burchart or Burkhart was an Alsatian-born priest, famed as a chronicler of the Italian Renaissance. He became a Protonotary Apostolic in February 1481, and was appointed Master of Ceremonies to Pope Sixtus IV in 1483, having bought the office for 450 ducats. He is best remembered for the diary which he kept, privately, from the time of his appointment, through his twenty years as Ceremoniere for Rodrigo Borgio - Pope Alexander VI - and until his death in 1506, which was only three years after the death of Alexander VI, thus essentially being a chronicle of the career and life of the infamous and highly controversial Borgia Pope, and containing the only known firsthand account of the 1501 Vatican orgy. In order to vindicate the reputation of the House of Borgia, some have disputed the accounts of intemperance and debauchery by the Pope, his family and staff. Oddly, the accounts of corruption, murder and other sins are not disputed, and so, the writer's accuracy seems to be of little doubt across the board, except for the embarrassing sexual immoralities dismissed by those few. Burchard's diary was clearly not intended for publication, nor for any other eye than his own. Burchard resided in the Vatican, and as was customary, he kept, for his own private use, a daily record of events. The diary began in 1483 and ended with the death of its author in 1506, during his twenty-three years holding the office of Pontifical Master of the Ceremonies, no fewer than five Popes had been personally known and served by Burchard. As a notable Pontifical sacristan, deriving his income from the Popes with whom he was in daily contact and on friendly terms with, while also being privy to the violent and murderous acts inflicted upon their perceived traitors, he could have no possible object in conjuring or exaggerating events for his private note-book. The Banquet of Chestnuts, known also as the Ballet of Chestnuts, refers to a festivity held in the Papal Palace in Rome on 30 October 1501, and hosted by Cardinal Cesare Borgia, son of Rodrigo Borgia, Pope Alexander VI. An account of the banquet is preserved in a Latin diary by Johann Burchard, Protonotary Apostolic and Master of Ceremonies at the Vatican for twenty-three years. According to Burchard, the banquet was given in Cesare's apartments in the Palazzo Apostolico. Fifty prostitutes or courtesans from Rome were brought in to entertain the guests. With disapproval for the indiscretions, in his private diary Burchard described the scene as a bizarre orgy, the fifty women dancing after dinner with the attendants and others who were present, initially clothed, then nude. After dinner the candelabra with the burning candles were taken from the tables and placed on the floor, and chestnuts were strewn around, which the naked courtesans were instructed collect whilst crawling on hands and knees between the chandeliers, and whilst the Pope, his son Cesare, and daughter Lucrezia observed. Finally, proof of virility was rewarded with prizes such as tunics of silk, shoes, and berets, for guests who could perform sexual acts most often with the courtesans. The binding was made by J. Griffiths, bookseller, stationer, and librarian, at 4 Argyle Building, Bath, England, who is listed in "Gye's Bath directory, corrected to January 1819." . Very Good.

Spettacolare coloritura all'acquerello. Perfetta conservazione. Molto rara mm 250x400

Autograph letter signed. Wittenberg, 7. XII. 1800.

1800. 8vo. 1 p. on double leaf. Fine letter of the "father of acoustics" to his publisher Breitkopf & Härtel concerning two articles for the periodical "Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung" ("General music journal"), one of which is a review of Dalberg's work which was published in this year. His review, Chladni demands, shall be printed beyond his name; however, he was not successful for it was printed anonymously (vol. III, 1801, col. 196-200). - The second article (which was in fact "Ueber die wahre Ursache des Consonirens und Dissonirens") can be divided into two parts due to his lenght (col. 337-343 and 353-359). Moreover, he promises to send his review of Grétrys "Versuche über die Musik" ("Experiments in music"). - Tiny folding, and somewhat browned.
