LA ROCHEFOUCAULT-LIANCOURT, [Francois Alexandre]
For R. Phillips by T. Davison, London, 1799. First edition in English of "an original source of the first class for American history at the close of the 18th century" (Larned). Quarto, bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt tooling to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, with three engraved folding maps of North America and six folding tables. In near fine condition. An exceptional example of this landmark work. First editions are rare. "The observations of this distinguished author, made during a three years' residence, extend to the political constitution of the country, the manners, etc., of the inhabitants, its physical state and natural history. The translator appears to have executed his task faithfully, and to be well acquainted with the country described. His notes frequently increase the information, and sometimes correct the errors of the original" (Sabin). The work became a standard source book for the history of America at the close of the 18th century. An exiled French nobleman, the Duke traveled in all the Eastern states, in the Great Lakes region, and Upper Canada, visiting many towns from Maine to Georgia and making the acquaintance of people of all classes. He was especially interested in economics, but had much to say about the Indian tribes, natural history, and social and religious communities (Shakers, Dunkers, etc.). HAMLAIN (Author of)
London: Printed for the Author, and West and Hughes; and E. Harding, 1799. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, 12mo, 137 x 84 mms., pp. [ii], iv, 135 [136 Errata], contemporary quarter green sheepskin, marbled boards (very worn); lacks frontispiece, hinges cracked, with title-page and next two leaves re-affixed at inner margin, rear hinge separated from rear board and cords exposed; an insalubrious copy. The title-page asserts that this book was written by the "Author of Hamlain", which is a reference to the very rare anonymous novel titled Hamlain; or, The Hermit of the Beach, a Moral Reverie, Calculated for the Instruction and Amusement of Youth, which was brought out by Elizabeth Newbery in London the same year, 1799. The book at hand, The Moralist (1799), is the only other work known from this anonymous writer's pen, with the text in the form of a dialogue among several interlocutors. The Anti-Jacobin Review and Magazine declared that they can "safely recommend" The Moralist to "mothers and governesses" as "being amusing and instructive in a high degree" (Vol. 6, No. 23, May 1800, p. 56). The Critical Review, on the other hand, found the book edifying without being sufficiently amusing for its intended audience: "A well-designed little book," they called it, "with much for the information, but we fear not quite enough for the amusement of children" (Vol. 28, February 1800, p. 229). The question of who authored Hamlain and The Moralist was highlighted in scholarly literature as early as 1864, when a short article by R. Inglis in Notes and Queries enquired after its auth … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

MARSHALL, William.
London: printed for G. Nicol, G.G. and J. Robinson, and J. Debrett, 1799. London: printed for G. Nicol, G.G. and J. Robinson, and J. Debrett,, 1799. 2 volumes, octavo (206 X 123 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf by Smith of Bedford with his ticket, black and red morocco labels to spines, smooth spines ruled in gilt. Engraved map and 5 plates. Light chipping to spine ends, slight bumping and wear to tips, light rubbing to spines, contents clean. An attractive copy. First edition to include Marshall's survey of the agriculture of the London region, the second edition overall, following the first of the previous year. William Marshall (1845-1818), with Arthur Young the key agricultural writer of the period, published six major studies on the farming practices of different regions of England from 1788 to 1798, with this, the final instalment, on the South of England. The series remains an important source for the state of English agriculture in the period. This copy has a pleasing agricultural provenance; firstly, with the bookplate to pastedowns of Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford (1765-1802), the Whig politician responsible for much of the development of Bloomsbury in London, and who had a keen interest in agricultural improvement, establishing a model farm at Woburn and experimenting with the breeding of sheep. Secondly, with the stamp and shelfmarks of the Lawes Agricultural Library, assembled in the early 20th century by Sir John Russell, director of the Rothamsted agricultural research institution in Hertfordshire, and ranking as one of the finest English collectio … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Thomas Hood (1799-1845) extremely rare handwritten poem (probably his greatest and most humorous) with authenticity from the famed NYC auction house that specialized in manuscripts "The Anderson Auction Company". This is a handwritten manuscript to Thomas Hood's poem No! November in London is usually cool and overcast, and in Hood's day subject to frequent fog and smog In 1844 he wrote No! Thomas Hood No sun--no moon! No morn--no noon-- No dawn-- No sky--no earthly view-- No distance looking blue-- No road--no street--no "t'other side the way"-- No end to any Row-- No indications where the Crescents go-- No top to any steeple-- No recognitions of familiar people-- No courtesies for showing 'em-- No knowing 'em! No traveling at all--no locomotion, No inkling of the way--no notion-- "No go"--by land or ocean-- No mail--no post-- No news from any foreign coast-- No park--no ring--no afternoon gentility-- No company--no nobility-- No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member-- No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds, November! Thomas Hood's "November" (also entitled "No") is a lyric poem centering on the fog and gloom of a November day in London. He completed it in 1844. The copy on this page appeared in the third volume of The Works of Thomas Hood, published in London by Edward Moxon and Company. The theme of the poem is the bleakness of a November day in London. A heavy fog--and perhaps a bit of smog from chimney smoke--obscures everything: the sun, the moon, the steeples, the roadways, the pa … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

LE MAISTRE, John Gustavus (d. 1840).
London: printed by Luke Hansard, no. 6, Great Turnstile, Lincoln's-Inn-Fields, for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, in the Strand. 1799. FIRST EDITION. Three volumes, 8vo (160 x 88 mm), pp. [iv], 169; [ii], 235; [ii], 187, A handsome copy of a highly readable novel, with a nice contemporary female provenance. The story tells of the early life of Frederic Latimer, from his infancy, the death of his father, who was a naval hero and a son of the Earl of Cressy, the remarriage of his mother to the elderly Duke of Annan and her subsequent neglect of him, his school days when he was 'the best scholar, the best cricketer and the best boxer of Westminster School' (p. 68), his life at the house of his tutor, Mr. Darewell, and his falling in love with Charlotte, Mr. Darewell's daughter. In alarm at this inappropriate match, the tutor sends Frederic to Oxford, where the fellows' social life of stale political jokes, sixpenny whist, ale and smoking does little to cure his heart ache. Innocent and trusting by nature, it is not long before he falls into bad company and in one night of gambling and rather too much wine he 'exchanged a situation of ease and independence for one of debt and embarrassment'. The debt takes him to London where he has further adventures and begins to wise up a bit. He enlists in the guards, finds more genuine friends, resists a profitable marriage, is posted to the West Indies, succeeds to the peerage on his return and is finally united in marriage to the faithful Charlotte. This is Le Maistre's first work, with the following apology by way of preface: 'The Autho …

Original marbled paper cover binding, loose from the pages. With damaged edges, 23 x 13 cm. With inscription in ink on the first page by Barbara Jacoba Heijligers (1799-1883) dated Mei 1845. She was a daughter of Wilhelmus Johannes Heijligers (Koopman, Korenwijnstoker and distillateur in Schiedam) and Maria Jacoba van Baalen (Korenwijnbranderesse en Regentesse Sint Jacobs Gasthuis). First page is missing a piece probably because of a cut out name of a former owner. P. 1-73 severely damaged by a beast, however out of the text. Some pages uncut. Vathek is an early example of a Gothic novel by the British writer William Beckford (1760-1844). The lead character, caliph Vathek, goes on several adventures to gain supernatural powers. Instead of obtaining these powers, Vathek is doomed to live in hell for eternity. On these quests he meets eerie individuals and travels to fantastical places. This work is a beautiful example of the oriental influence in the 19th century.

PARK, Mungo
London: W. Bulmer and Co. for the Author; and sold by G, 1799. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Mungo Park was an 18th-century Scottish explorer who was well-known for his voyages in West Africa and the Niger River Basin. The reports and accounts of this voyage are still quite popular today amongst game hunters and navigation enthusiasts. The origin of this voyage came when Park sought to discover the source of the Niger River, a goal that Daniel Houghton had originally set out to find. On his journey, Park encountered a group of Mandinka slaves - an encounter that inspired the work 'Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa'. These slaves assumed Park and his men were cannibals and, like slave traders before them, were there to enslave, sell, and consume them. This book set the standard for future travels writers to follow and was important for providing Western Europeans with a view of life in Central Africa. According to the Printing of the Mind and Man, "Until the publication of Park's [first] book in 1799 hardly anything was known of the interior of Africa, apart from the north-east region and the coastal areas. Park's Travels had an immediate success and was translated into most European languages. It has become a classic of travel literature, and its scientific observations on the botany and meteorology of the region, and on the social and domestic life of the negroes, have remained of lasting value." Included are nine fascinating engraved plates depicting: · Portrait of Mr. Mungo Park · Map of the Travel Rout … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Washington, George
Mount Vernon, 1799. [1]p. Some dampstaining. Very good. Matted and framed with portrait. Less than a month before his death, George Washington answers a letter from a fellow landed gentleman of Virginia, Ralph Wormeley. Washington opens the letter by quashing a rumor that he was planning to visit Norfolk, Virginia, admitting he had not "been farther from home since I left the Chair of Government, than the Federal City" adding in the margin, "except when I was called to Philadelphia by the Secretary of War." He adds that his advancing age "will circumscribe my Walks; unless, which heaven avert! I should be obliged to resume a military career." This last point is an allusion to Washington's appointment as Commander in Chief during the Quasi-War with France. Although Washington had accepted a commission as Lieutenant General of the provisional army raised to defend against possible land invasion by France, he did so with the full knowledge that Alexander Hamilton, Inspector General of the Army, and Tobias Lear, his own personal secretary, would act on his behalf. Although Washington was ostensibly in good health, he had begun to slow down. The week prior to this letter, the Alexandria Dancing Assembly had invited the Washingtons to an event, but he begged off, commenting famously that "Alas, our dancing days are no more." The first president of the United States passed away at Mount Vernon after a brief illness on December 14, 1799. The recipient of the present letter, Ralph Wormeley was a bibliophile and scholar raised in a genteel Virginia family but educated at Eton a …

Firmato in lastra in basso a sinistra "Piranesi inv. incise evende a Roma / in faccia all'Accademia di Francia" Bibliografia: Focillon, 21; Robinson, 22

Staunton, Sir George (Text by); Samuel Seymour (Engravings by)
Philadelphia: Robert Campbell, 1799. First American edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. Large octavo (8 1/2 x 5 1/2"). xxiii, [1], 297, [1]pp (Vol. 1); 267, [1], xxivpp (Vol. 2). Modern brown cloth, with gold lettered leather title label to spine. Engraved frontispiece to both volumes. Lacking the separately printed atlas, as usual. First American edition of this official report on the British Macartney Embassy to China that took place between 1792 and 1794. It was written after the return to England by the Secretary to the mission Sir George Leonard Staunton, 1st Baronet (1737-1801), based on his own observations and notes from other crewmembers, including his twelve-year-old son Sir George Thomas Staunton, 2nd Baronet. "The account offers rich insights into the beginnings of British Imperialism in China and thus makes it an important primary source for the historiography of Sino-Western relations. There is an academic dispute whether the account marks a sudden turning point in British-Chinese dynamics or reflects a slow and complex divergence. While the political and economic ambitions of the embassy failed, the account by Staunton brought back detailed descriptions of and observations on the Chinese culture that were received with curiosity in the West and led to the commercial success of the book and the publication of several translations and subsequent writings on the Macartney Mission." (From Wikipedia) This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with eight stunning engravings by Samuel Seymour, two in volume one, six in volume two, including the frontispieces … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

SEWARD, Anna
Printed for G. Sael, London, 1799. [2], vi, [4], 179pp, [1]. With a half-title. Contemporary red half-morocco, marbled boards, gilt. Rubbed, lightly marked, a trifle sunned. Recent bookplate of Eric Gerald Stanley to FEP, half-title heavily spotted, else internally clean and crisp. The first edition of a well-received collection of 100 sonnets, with additional paraphrases and imitations of Horace, by Anna Seward (1742- 1809). The poems date from the 1770s to 1799, some of which had previously been published in periodicals. In her prefatory remarks Seward defends the sonnet form against the contempt of Johnson and other critics as a 'highly valuable species of verse'; subsequently, in a long footnote, she justifies her poetic 'translations' of Horace, despite her limited knowledge of Latin, by claiming that a literal prose translation is not as true to the 'essence' of Horace. HERDER, Johann Gottfried.
Leipzig: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch,, 1799. Herder refutes Kant 2 volumes, octavo (161 x 99 mm). Contemporary half tree sheep, twin tan paper labels, marbled sides. Vol. II with slight repair to head of spine and with tiny chip at foot, light restoration to tips, but bindings otherwise in very nice condition, contents generally clean with occasional offsetting, the odd rust spot, a few annotations in crayon. A very nice copy. First edition of Herder's attack on Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Herder's attack on his former tutor and the near-undisputed king of German philosophy, led to outrage among his contemporaries; Goethe is reported to have said that had he known Herder was writing the book, he would have begged him to suppress it. The work represents Kant's Critique as "jugglery with words, as a linguistic monstrosity and as involving a wrong-headed perpetuation of the faculty psychology... his main line of thought is that Kant's whole enterprise is wrongly conceived. Even if there were a separate faculty called 'reason', it would be out of order to speak of 'criticising' it. Rather should we start with language; for reasoning is not only expressed in language, it is also inseparable from it" (Copleston, The Enlightenment: Voltaire to Kant, pp. 144-5). Though well-represented on the continent, the book is scarce in British institutions, with only the Oxford, British Library and Glasgow University copies recorded. [Foscolo, Ugo]
