Relation abrégée du Voyage de La Pérouse , pendant les années 1785, 1786, 1787 et 1788?

Leipsick 1799 - Octavo, frontispiece, five plates, and a large folding map; contemporary quarter calf, some wear, front joint starting but otherwise a very good copy, bookplate. Rare abridgment. Very scarce abridged version of the La Pérouse voyage, printed in French at Leipzig. The five plates and the large world map, although adjusted to suit the smaller octavo format, are very good indeed. Ferguson knew only the National Library copy, while McLaren also noted a copy in the State Library of Victoria. The attribution of the abridgement of the work to Charles de Villers (1765-1815) is from Barbier.

Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1799-1800.4 volumes in 2. Old boards, rebacked with the contemporary calf spines laid down (sl. rubbed). With 42 engraved plates, maps and plans (5 folding) by R. Vinkeles, J. Wijsman, A. Zurcher, a.o.* First Dutch edition; first published in London in 1796: Narrative of a five years' expedition, against the revolted negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the wild coast of South America. - It has gone through more than twenty editions in six languages. Captain John Gabriel Stedman, an officer in the Scots Brigade in Holland, volunteered for service against the negroes in Dutch Guiana. While out there he to all intents married the subject of plate 8, Joanna, a Mulatto, and had a son by her, who became a midshipsman in the British Navy, but died young. ' While he did his duty as a soldier .. he does not disguise his sympathy with the rebels .. His description of the cruelties practised on the negroes, and of the moral deterioration resulting to their masters, forms one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have ever been penned' (DNB). Stedman (1744-1797), a keen observer living for more than four years in the colony of Surinam, derives much of what he reports from first-hand observation, but even his reports of hearsay represent key primary data, in that they disclose rich details about everyday plantation discourse. The text consists of the romance with Joanna and his efforts to gain her freedom, the military campaigns against the rebel slaves, his relations with other soldiers, particularly his commanding officer, Fourgeoud, the description and investigation of exotic flora and fauna, the description of Indian and African slave life, and most important, the description and analysis of relations between planters and slaves. The engravings show the habitations of both the natives and the Europeans, local flora and fauna, ships, forts, tools, battle plans, and map of the erea. - A first-hand account of an eighteenth-century slave society. - A clean copy with fine plates.Sabin 91077; Tiele 1046; Cat. NHSM I, p.282; Suriname-catalogus UB Amsterdam 6455.

John Adams approves two acts of Congress concerning public health and the welfare of naval veterans

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: , 1799 Document, signed in type "John Adams", as President. Fifth Congress of the United States, Second Session: AN ACT Respecting Quarantines and Health Laws, approved February 25, 1799; In addition to AN ACT for the Relief of sick and disabled Seamen, approved March 2, 1799, 3p, 8.25" x 13.25". Philadelphia, 1799. Typical folds, spine fold partially separated with some light dampstains along fold and margins. The first act, concerning quarantines, orders federal port officials to respect state health laws concerning the quarantine of ships arriving from foreign or domestic ports and makes provision for the storage of goods and wares aboard such ships. The act also provides for the relocation of federal offices and officials to a new location in the event of "a contagious or epidemical disease at the seat of government." The act also provides for the removal of federal offices and officials from ports where similar circumstances prevailed. The second act, approved by Adams about a week afterwards, expands the scope of a law to provide relief for sick and injured seamen by levying a 20 cent per month deduction of pay for all naval officers, seamen, and marines. Extremely Rare. An unusual issue combining Evans 36475 and 36472 on a single bifolium. Combination not sourced in Evans or Bristol. This may have been the manner in which the acts were originally issued, but were only found by Evans on separate sheets.

Trees. Poems by Eliot Porter, William Blake, Robert Frost, Ezra Pound and W. H. Auden

[Fairview NC, 2012]. [Fairview NC. 2012]. Unique artist's book, hand lettered and drawn and painted on Twinrocker handmade paper, signed and dated by the artist, Annie Cicale, on the outside of the binding, under the easel flap. Page size: 14 x 5.5 inches with the book opening to 10 pages of graduated lengths: 6.75, 8.5, 10, 11, and 12.25 inches, page length determined by length of verse; 11pp. Bound by the artist, Annie Cicale, in brown and black patterned Cave paper with black morocco spine, morocco piece irregular edged to mimic bark of tree, with easel tab on rear cover that folds flat as well as extending to display book vertically, with custom-made grey cloth over boards slipcase. Annie Cicale has created a lovely book and book object with five poems concerning trees with images of trees on verso. The book opens to a view of ever-taller trees, all in black ink with washes with the poignant texts extolling the necessity of trees. Auden's poem, "A Culture Is No Better Than Its Woods" is from BUCOLICS II, WOODS. Ezra Pound's poem, "A Tree," is referenced with "I stood still..." the first two lines. The first verse of Robert Frost's poem, "Tree at my Window," follows. Ms. Cicale has selected William Blake's 1799 quotation, "The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing which stands in the way" as the penultimate text. The largest page is a quotation from noted photographer, Eliot Porter, "It has been said that wildness is a luxury, a commodity that man will dispense with as his occupancy of the earth approaches saturation. If this happens he is finished. Wilderness must be preserved. It is a spiritual necessity." Texts are lettered vertically, seeming to be the roots of the tree pictured on the next page. Lettering styles vary to match the shape of the tree pictured. And, the tops of the succeeding pages are visible as tree tops from each page of text. A beautiful book.

LAW OF THE UNITED STATES. BY AUTHORITY. FIFTH CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES...AN ACT, FURTHER TO SUSPEND THE COMMERCIAL INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND FRANCE, AND THE DEPENDENCIES THEREOF [caption title]

[Philadelphia. 1799].. [Philadelphia. 1799].. [1]p. on a single folio sheet, text printed in three columns. Docketed in ink on the verso. Three horizontal folds. Some light edgewear, small separations at the edges of the folds, not affecting text. Very good. Rare congressional act extending the suspension of trade with France during the so-called "Quasi-War" of the late 1790s, and adding a provision allowing the U.S. Navy to inspect and seize American ships that are violating the embargo. This act was approved February 9, 1799, and extends the provisions of the law first approved June 13, 1798. It is signed in type at the conclusion by President Adams, Vice-President Jefferson, and Speaker of the House Jonathan Dayton. The Quasi-War was an undeclared conflict between the United States and France during the Adams administration in the late 1790s, manifested mostly in naval engagements between the two nations. The war was the outgrowth of deteriorating Franco- American relations, which had been weakened earlier in the decade by the "Genet Affair" and the "XYZ Affair," and it wreaked havoc on commerce between the two nations. One of the main weapons wielded by Adams was to ban American commerce from France and French dependencies, accomplished by the congressional act of 1798 and extended by the present law. The law forbids American ships from trading with France or with French dependencies, including in the West Indies, and goes on to bar French commerce and French ships from American ports. Significantly, this act goes beyond the provisions of the 1798 law by permitting United States navy vessels to inspect and potentially seize American vessels that have traded with France or with French dependencies. This broadside format is unusual for the printing of a law, and indicates that it was meant to be displayed in ports and customs officers for the attention of ships masters who may have been unaware of the embargo law or willfully violating it. ESTC locates only three copies, at Oxford, the British National Archives, and the American Antiquarian Society. Rare. EVANS 36522. ESTC W42364. OCLC 80514531.

        A Practical Commentary

London - The Religious Tract Society, 1799. London - The Religious Tract Society, 1799 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Robert Leighton was the Archbishop of Glasgow, and in his earlier years attended Edinburgh University. Leighton was appointed a member of the general assembly of 1653, which was dispersed by Cromwell's officers. He gave covenants to the students in line with official church policy, while encouraging them to avoid that itch for polemical and controversial theology which is so prevalent and infectious. He also expressed the wish for a grammar school in every parish supported by a simple Latin grammar for children. [DNB]Featuring a handwritten letter directed To Anne Pike, on her wedding day, Oct. 26. 1843 signed With the Kind Wishes of the Reverend W. Williams, also featuring a frontispiece of Robert Leighton. Volume one. Condition: In a morocco binding. Externally, shelf wear and bumping, slight wear to extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. There is some show-through fromthe frontispiece, but otherwise bright and clean. Overall: GOOD.

Histoire des mathematiques . . . Second edition, considerably augmented

Paris: Henri Agasse, 1799-1802 Paris: Henri Agasse, 1799-1802. Montucla, Jean Etienne (1725-99). Histoire des mathématiques . . . Nouvelle edition, considérablement augmentée, et prolongée jusque vers l’Époque actuel. 4 vols., 4to. [4], viii, 739; [4], 717, [1]; viii, 832; [4], 688pp. 45 folding engraved plates, engraved portraits of Montucla and Lalande. Paris: Henri Agasse, 1799-1802. 255 x 193 mm. 19th century tree sheep, gilt spines with leather labels, a few scratches on covers, very minor edgewear. Minor occasional foxing, but overall a fine set, with all half-titles present. Bookplate of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana in all volumes. Second and most complete edition, considerably expanded from the first edition of 1758. Montucla’s Histoire, the first classical history of mathematics, was “a comprehensive and, relative to the state of contemporary scholarship, accurate description of the development of the subject in various countries. The account also included mechanics, astronomy, optics, and music, which were then considered subdivisions of mathematics” (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The first edition covered mathematical history only to the end of the 17th century; Montucla had intended to add a third volume covering mathematics to the mid-18th century but was unable to do so at the time. In the 1790s Montucla began working on the second edition of his Histoire, revising and expanding the first two volumes and adding a third devoted to 18th-century mathematics. He died when this volume was in press, however, and the remainder of the second edition was completed (with the assistance of others) by his friend, the astronomer J. J. L. de Lalande (1732-1807). Volume three covers 18th century pure mathematics, optics and mechanics, while the fourth volume covers 18th century astronomy, mathematical geography and navigation. O’Connor, J. J., and E. F. N.p., "25 ventose, an 7me de la République" (i.e., 15 March 1799). 233 x 188 mm. Top portion of address leaf torn away, not affecting text, lacuna where seal was broken, small marginal tear. (2) Autograph letter signed, in French, to Nicolas Viton de Saint-Allais (1773-1842). 1 page plus integral address leaf. N.p., 19 May 1819. 207 x 175 mm. Light marginal soiling. Together 2 letters, enclosed in cloth portfolio stamped "P.V.H." in gilt on the front cover; accompanied by several printed items, including 2 engraved portraits of Lacépède, brief extracts from several of his printed works and 2 biographical notices. Very good. From French naturalist Lacépède, best known for his collaboration with Buffon on the continuation of the latter’s monumental Histoire naturelle, to which Lacépède contributed eight volumes including the five-volume Histoire naturelle des poissons (1798-1803). These volumes were issued by the French publisher Saugrain, to whom the first letter above is addressed. Saugrain had apparently wanted to feature Lacépède’s name in a prospectus for the Histoire naturelle; Lacépède responded by stating that although he was "as much touched as flattered by the esteem and affection you are pleased to show me," he was "far from believing" that his name "might add to the success of the edition of the Histoire naturelle that you are undertaking." He asked Saugrain that if the prospectuses had not yet been printed, "everything concerning me" should be removed "as useless and too little merited." In the second letter, written in the third person to genealogist Nicolas Viton de Saint-Allais, Lacépède informed his correspondent that he was returning "the article [Saint-Allais] was so kind as to send me and to which I made a short addition, because the Mémoires of [Philippe de] Commines were on my desk." He further promised to send a certified copy of a genealogy to the French city of Vienne, which he would deposit "with great pleasure" in Saint-Allais’s collection. Saint-Allais was the head of the Bureau Générale de la Noblesse de France. "Commines" refers to French historian and diplomat Philippe de Commines (1447-1511), whose Mémoires were published in 1524.         The Infant Shakespeare. Attended by nature and the passions. [Engraving]

London: Boydell, Shakespeare Gallery, 1799. London: Boydell, Shakespeare Gallery, 1799. Shakespeare, William. The infant Shakespeare. Attended by nature and the passions. [Engraving] after George Romney. Engraving by Benjamin Smith, published Sept. 29, 1799. Location of the original painting: Folger Shakespeare Library. London: Boydell, Shakespeare Gallery, 1799. Engraving on laid paper, nicely framed . (24" 19"; framed dimension 34" x 29"). In The Infant Shakespeare, nature is shown as a radiant illuminating presence, hovering above the infant. The passions pictured are love, hatred, and jealousy to the right; anger envy and fear to the left. Joy with her flute, sorry kneeling before the child are also pictured. Reference: Pape and Burwick Boydell Shakespare Gallery Cat I: 2 This engraving is part of a magnificent series of historical prints that illustrate the plays of Shakespeare. This is one of the two allegorical pictures that frame but not illustrate the plays. The other is "The infant Shakespeare nursed by tragedy and comedy" (catalogue II:48) The origin of these majestic engravings grew from the publisher Alderman John Boydell who, in 1786, decided to publish "a fine edition of Shakespeare" that might rival the elegant volumes which the French were then producing of their national authors. The Boydell edition of Shakespeare in nine magnificent, folio volumes was finally finished in 1805. These much larger engravings were printed in a separate suite of 100 plates to be appreciated as art objects for their beauty. They were available for purchase individually from 1795 and, after 1805, complete in two volumes. Athough the Boydell Shakespeare project ended in bankruptcy and liquidation, these engravings remain after 200 years a prize of print collectors.
