Allen, Charles. Blake, William.
London: J. Johnson, 1798. 8vo, viii, 496 pp, with Blake's 4 engravings after Fuseli. A very good copy in quarter calf over marbled boards; slight wear at corners. Internally very clean and plates crisp, although the text and plates are all quite tightly trimmed, with narrow margins. Plate 2 in particular has been trimmed to the left print margin, although not with any encroachment on the image. Plates 1 and 2's imprints have also been shaved, and page numbers are also occasionally partially shaved on he upper page edge. First edition illustrated by Blake; one of Blake’s scarcer works, seldom seen in the trade or at auction; there was also a volume on English history published in the same year. We have had one other copy in the last seven years, and a separate set of the plates extracted from the book. The plates are strong and lively renditions of moments such as the death of Cleopatra; with the recent discovery of an original drawing by Fuseli for Allen’s English History (now in the Essick Collection) we now are quite sure that the illustrations for both volumes were drawn by Fuseli. Bentley, BB, 416. Essick, William Blake’s Commercial Book Illustrations, XXXVII. Bentley, BB 416, Essick, William Blake's Commercial Book Illustrations XXXVII (p77).

Allen, Charles. Blake, William.
London: J.Johnson, 1798. 8vo, iv, (4), 551, (1, folding chronological chart), with 4 plates engraved by Blake, from designs ascribed to Fuseli. Recently bound in mottled calf with red leather title and gilt decorations to spine. A very clean copy, with good page margins, but just a touch of mottling to edges of endpapers. The plates have clean and crisp impressions: the imprints of plates 2 and 3 are trimmed closely as often the case with this title, with partial loss of some lower letters on that of plate 2, but plate 3's imprint is fully legible. Bentley, BB, 415, Essick, William Blake's Commercial Book Illustrations, XXXVI, p75.

John Tyler
Gales and Seaton were the official printers to Congress. Under the title of Annals of Congress, they published the debates in Congress from 1798 to 1824, together with the more important documents and laws, and under the title Register of Debates in Congress continued the publication in similar form to cover the years 1824-37. They sent the Houses of Congress copies of their works as they were published. It was the practice at the time for these copies to be acknowledged by groups of congressmen, perhaps representing entire committees. There are 31 signers of this acknowledgment, and their identities dates this as being from the 21st Congress, which was seated in 1829. The Gales and Seaton books for 1829 were acknowledged as received by 31 men, a significant number of whom would soon become prominent in their country's history. Document signed, the Senate chamber, Washington, circa 1829: "Received of Walter Lownie, Secretary of the Senate, 4 volumes of the republications of the Public Documents by Gales & Seaton". The signatories include future: President John Tyler, Vice President George M. Dallas, Vice President William King, Secretary of State Daniel Webster, Secretary of State John M. Clayton, Secretary of War William Wilkins, Attorney General Felix Grundy, Navy Secretary Mahlon Dickerson, and vice presidential candidate Theodore Frelinghuysen. Thomas H. Benton heads the other notables.

A unique collection of old watermarks 165 watermarks on 143 blank paper sheets from the Smoorenburg CollectionIntroduction This unique collection of watermarks was composed from a large collection of blank paper sheets dating from the 17th to the 19th Century. I was very lucky to be able to buy this collection from Mr. Smoorenburg from the Netherlands, who collected these sheets over a long period. While looking through the collection I really enjoyed the beautifull diversity of the caracteristics of old paper and I realised that the fact that they are blank sheets made it possible to fully appreciate the paper, there was no distraction by printing or writing. The historic value was also exiting: paper that was used by some famous artists, paper that was made by papermills from Holland who supplied the paper for the first printing of the Declaration of Independence, and many other remarkable papers. And of course all the different watermarks were very fascinating. What do you do with such a collection? Of some paper theres only one sheet, of some paper 100 sheets and also the sizes vary a lot. Some paper has watermarks, some not. One of the greatest advantages of blank paper is the fact that you can see the watermarks so clearly. So I decided that the first thing that I would do, was to compose a collection of as many different watermarks as possible. I ended up with 165 different ones, some of them being counter marks of others. Pictures were made of all the watermarks showing a ruler in millimeters and all the sheets were measured for the description. The stocknumber in … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Brunner, Heinrich Maximilian)
[Click Below for Full Description]

BACON-TACON (Pierre Jean Jacques).
Pickering, Timothy
Philadelphia, 1798. Very good, edge worn with one tear at the fold, not affecting text.. [2 pp]. 1 sheet. Signed by Timothy Pickering, dated Philadelphia, June 27, 1798 and written while Pickering was John Adams' Secretary of State -and shortly after the abortive American diplomatic commission sent to France the prior year in the hopes of avoiding war. The mission would become known as the XYZ Affair, after the three French diplomats who had demanded bribes and loans, and would be a contributing factor in the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts. Pickering complains about the loyalty of pro-French Democratic-Republicans and specifically about Elbridge Gerry, who remained behind in France, while the other two American envoys, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and John Marshall, were leaving. "Dear Sir, You must not judge the state of our country from the division you see in congress. The leading opposition numbers have committed themselves so far, it is not easy to retract their principles or their measure, and they have a number of devoted followers. I have no doubt that some of the former would rather see a revolution in our country & the power of France triumphant as it is in Holland, Switzerland, and Italy, than that the measures of our own government, which they have long and uniformly opposed by preserving our constitution and independence should succeed. With such views, you must know that there can be but few followers, except among the uninformed and deluded, who will eventually be set right. I enclose the last official dispatch from our envoys at Paris, and also one fr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Meslant, an VII. 1798. in-12. VIII. 120 pages. (18,5x12cm). [Click Below for Full Description]
