[México; Ejecutoria] [Pacheco Calderon, Antonio] Feliz de Rujula, Juan.
The Pacheco Calderón family, while originating from Carriedo in northern Spain, were one of the foremost commercial families in Guadalajara, Mexico. Antonio Pacheco Calderón occupied a number of posts in the political and commercial administration of Guadalajara, then the capital of the Nueva Galicia province, and was at the time that this guarantee of lineage was carried out the Alcalde Ordinario of Guadalajara. He served several terms as a member of the city council, where he more than once held the most senior rank of "mayor", a post in which he was succeeded by his son José Miguel. In addition to serving in several such important municipal positions, Pacheco Calderón enjoyed a prominent status as one of Guadalajara's commercial élites and was involved in the city's tequila industry, meat monopoly and tax revenue system. In all, as the historian Richard B. Lindley notes, many aspects of Pacheco Calderón's career make him 'an interesting study by themselves' as his 'personal history shows that different business and political interests were combined not only in families, but also in individual persons' (Lindley, Haciendas and Economic Development: Guadalajara, Mexico, at Independence, Austin: University of Texas, 1983). Evidence of Pacheco Calderón's wealth and standing, both in the Americas and in Spain, is the fact that this 'Despacho Confirmatorio' was carried out by Juan Félix de Rújula, official chronicler, herald and genealogist for the Spanish crown during the reign of Carlos IV. Rújula's 'Deeds' proving noble lineage are perhaps among the more accomplishe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Whiting (Thomas)
Printed for Messrs. Whiting Davis Gale Leybourn and Kemmish; And sold by T.N. Longman, 1798. with 13 engraved plates, one catchword trimmed, minor browning and staining, pp. iv, [5-] 228, bound with other items (see below), 4to, modern brown morocco backed marbled boards, ownership inscription on preserved fly-leaf of Geo. Sherwin of Dale Abbey dated 1800. This volume is a bit of a puzzle. ESTC T110407 records Mathematical, Geometrical, and Philosophical Delights, puiblished in 11 parts 1792-98, with 13 plates preceded by a separate title-page dated 1797. Bound with the volume as described above (sans 1797 title-page) we have the parts issue, each numbered and consisting of 4 pp. - except part 11, where we have the title-page only, and a page of advertisement referring to No. 16 of the Scientific Receptacle (a stable-mate). These parts, a little soiled, and cut close, are evidently disbound from a calf-bound volume, and are in fact almost detached (as a body) from the main text block. Thus we seem to have an unrecorded collected edition. However the 225 pages contain much more than the 'Delights'', with correspondence, and Essays. Thomas Whiting had a boarding school in Lambeth from about 1785 to 1795, thereafter a larger establishment, referred to on the title-page here as Keppel-House Seminary.

Rumford, Benjamin Count of [Benjamin Thompson]
Royal Society, London, 1798. TRUE FIRST EDITION OF THOMPSON'S SEMINAL CANNON-BORING EXPERIMENTS PROVING THAT HEAT IS A FORM OF ENERGY. This paper marks the beginning of investigations of the mechanical equivalent of heat and was the first step to establishing the 19th century revolution in thermodynamics. Here "Thompson . was the first to challenge successfully the accepted theory that heat was the manifestation of an imponderable fluid called 'caloric'. He declared, and gave experimental proof before the Royal Society ion 1798, that heat was a mode of motion" (Printing and the Mind of Man No. 323 p. 196). The paper is accompanied by a fold-out copperplate engraving. Benjamin Thompson was one of a number of scientists tasked to bore out the barrels of cannons for the British government. Astonished at the high temperatures the cannons and their shavings reached during the boring process, Thompson began to set up controlled experiments and this paper is the result of those experiments. In one specific experiment, Thompson sank a cannon in a tank of water, and using a steel borer and a brass cylinder, began the boring at a rate of thirty-two revolutions per minute. After only two hours and thirty minutes of boring, Thompson was stunned that the water surrounding the cannon had begun to boil. Thompson knew that his experiment had shown that the heat generated by boring occurred absent any chemical of physical change to the cannon, and in the paper states that "any thing which any insulated body, or system of bodies, can continue to furnish without limitation cannot possibly me … [Click Below for Full Description]

Filial Duty is divided into two parts, the first focused upon a number of "factual" accounts of parental obedience and filial loyalty that occurred in various parts of the world, including China, France, and Rome. One notable tale concerns a daughter who breastfeeds her mother while the latter is incarcerated in order to prevent her starving to death; the mother's jailer witnesses the scene and is so moved by it that he relates the story to the Consul, who then agree to pardon the mother for her offense. Some minor staining. A little dusty and with a faded dampstain to lower corner. Name of preowner Hugh McMahon of Armagh, dated „1800" in ink on the titlepage. An extremely rare, rather scarce compilation and a rare find for all collectors of material related to the United Irishmen. Arthur O'Connor (4 July 1763 - 25 April 1852), was a United Irishman and later a general in Napoleon's army. Born near Bandon, County Cork, O'Connor embraced the Republican movement early on as he was encouraged by the American Revolution overseas. From 1790 to 1795 he was a Member of Parliament in the Irish House of Commons for Philipstown. The Irish House of Commons was part of the colonial parliament that sat in College Green. O'Connor was also a member of the Kildare Street Club in Dublin. His brother Roger O'Connor, author of the Chronicles of Eri, shared his politics. His two other brothers were pro-British loyalists. In 1796 he became a member of the Society of United Irishmen. He and Lord Edward Fitzgerald petitioned France for aid in support of an Irish revolution. While traveling to France he was arrested alongside Father James Coigly, a Catholic priest, and three other United Irishmen. Coigly, who found to be carrying an incriminating letter, was hanged, whereas O'Connor was acquitted. He was re-arrested immediately and imprisoned at Fort George in Scotland along with his brother Roger. O'Connor w … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1788 Spallanzani travelled in the Two Sicilies, mainly in order to correct deficiencies in the vulcanic collection of the Museum of Natural History in Modena. Southern Italy had suffered for five years from intense eruptive and seismic activities. Messina was still in ruins and the countryside devastated. Vesuvius, near Naples, Stromboli and Vucano on the Eolian Isles, and Etna on the Island of Sicily, remained active. Spallanzani visited them all, undauntedly making several perilous ascents that involved great physical endurance. [Numismatics Sammelband]. P.F. de Goesin-Verhaeghe; Pierre-Antoine de Milly; Bertrand Capmartin de Chaupy
Ghent and Paris, 1812, 1799, 1798. Together 3 works in one volume, 8vo. [8], 320 pp. 5480 lots; 28 pp., 56 group lots, containing several thousand coins and medals; [2], 54 pp., 579 lots of books + 20 lots of antiquities. Contemporary French quarter sheep over decorated paper boards (lower joint and upper headcap chipped), vellum corner tips, marbled edges. Two tax-stamps on verso of Catalogue I. and passim., some unobtrusive traces of damp in margins; final leaf Catalogue III. a little soiled; occasional unimportant age-toning here and there. Good copy. Interesting Sammelband of sale catalogues of coins and medals, and also the library of Capmartin de Chaupy (1720-1798) who amassed his own collection of antiquities, coins and medals. Ad 1: Goesin-Verhaeghe's huge numismatics catalogue is a monument to his incredible industry; thousands of coins and medals are here described according to the system proposed in Joseph Eckhel's 8-volume "Doctrina Mumorum Veterum" (Vienna, 1792-1798). Ad 2: The collection of coins and medals belonging to Pierre-Antoine de Milly was divided into 56 group lots, which betrays the fact that there were thousands, and that these took two days to disperse. Milly's library was sold in the same year Ad 3: French archeologist Bertrand Capmartin de Chaupy (1720-1798) deserves some credit in the early excavations of the country villa of Horace. Easily the most important item in the sale was lot 467, a cosmographical manuscript of great beauty and curiosity from Thailand, written in "Baly, langue savante de Siam." As expected, most of the library contain … [Click Below for Full Description]

NOGARET (François Felix).
A Paris, chez la veuve Galletti, Lepetit, Desenne, an VI de la République (1798). 2 tomes en 1 volume in-8. 1f. 239pp. 2ff. chiffrés erronément 206, 561, 198 et 10. + 1f. 224pp. Gay, p. 146. Biographie universelle et portative des contemporains, p. 778. Darwin, Erasmus
Dublin: J. Chambers, 1798. First Dublin Edition. Hardcover. 12mo, [8], 184 pages; VG; newly rebound in 1/4 brown leather, dark gray cloth, dark green label with gilt lettering to spine; previous endpapers preserved; title page has a piece torn off from the upper fore corner, no text impacted; slight waving to pages; scarce; shelved case 10. Originally published in London in 1797, followed by a Dublin and a Philadelphia edition in 1798;Darwin regretted that a good education had not been generally available to women in Britain in his time, and drew on the ideas of Locke, Rousseau, and Genlis in organizing his thoughts. Addressing the education of middle class girls, Darwin argued that amorous romance novels were inappropriate and that they should seek simplicity in dress. He contends that young women should be educated in schools, rather than privately at home, and learn appropriate subjects. These subjects include physiognomy, physical exercise, botany, chemistry, mineralogy, and experimental philosophy. They should familiarize themselves with arts and manufactures through visits to sites like Coalbrookdale, and Wedgwood's potteries; they should learn how to handle money, and study modern languages. Darwin's educational philosophy took the view that men and women should have different, capabilities, skills, spheres, and interests, where the woman's education was designed to support and serve male agency, accomplishment and financial reward and relieve him from daily responsibility for children and chores of life. In the context of the times, this program may be read as a mo … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: printed for J. Johnson: and G.G. and J. Robinson, 1798. 8vo., engraved portrait frontispiece (a little browned and very slightly offset), (2) + 199 + (2)pp., including the errata leaf, but without the half-title and the advertisement leaves, in a fine post-1880 Riviere* binding of brown half morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt and labelled, top edge gilt, others uncut. A choice copy. First edition. Written by Godwin himself following the marriage of Mary and William in March 1797, the birth of Mary Godwin that August and Mary Wollstonecraft's death in September. Godwin's frank account of his wife's life shocked contemporary readers. 'The modern reader is likely to be moved by the Life> and Godwin's spare, honest, account of it. But at the time of violent reaction against the French Revolution, its ideology and its British sympathisers, the frank record was a gift to conservative polemicists and it was lavishly exploited. Wollstonecraft became a whore whose books aimed, in the words of the Anti-Jacobin, at the propagation of whores.' [Todd & Butler, pp. 12-13]. Nonetheless, Godwin has, in the 20th century, received considerable, and frequently hostile, attention from feminists because of these Memoirs.> * 'Bound by Riviere & Son'. Philadelphia: T. Dobson and W. Cobbet, 1798. First American Edition. Full Leather. Very Good binding. A copy of the First American Edition of Robison's Illuminati, stated Third Edition, which includes a Postscript not found in the First British Edition. The inventor of the siren and a Scottish Professor at Glasgow and Edinburgh, John Robison became a conspiracy theorist near the end of his life. Following the French Revolution, he was convinced that the Illuminati had infiltrated the upper echelons of the Revolution and the Free Masonry. This is a classic work of conspiracy theory, and even provoked a response from the famous Free Mason, George Washington, who claimed that the doctrines of the Illuminati and Jacobinism had certainly been spread in the United States, but not willfully by the Free Masons as a whole. Textblock is toned and foxed, with writing on the front endpaper. Bound in mottled calf, with rules and a red morocco label on the spine. Some wear to the edges of the spine. The edges of the front and rear endpapers and flyleaves are toned. Very Good binding.
