Das Helvetisches Volksblatt Nr. 1(8. September 1798)-19(28. Februar 1799) - alles was erschienen.

8, 234 S., Broschur der Zeit m. handschriftlichem Titelschild, Stockfleckig u. einzelne S. etwas angeschmutzt - trotzdem gutes Exemplar. Sehr selten.

The very rare first sale of Bozérian's books. Many of the books offered here were bound by Bozérian during his leisure time for his own library. Culot states that Bozérian was obliged to sell these books in order to raise funds to purchase a workshop. Bozérian (1762-1840), called the Elder to distinguish him from his younger brother François (active 1805-1820), was one of the foremost and innovative binders of his time who also successfully engaged in bookselling and publishing. Over the years, he sold books at auction four times: 1798, 1807, 1811 (in order to retire in comfort) and 1834. There was a fifth, posthumous, sale in 1846. 513 lots and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Fine copy. Without the 4-page schedule of sale at end. ? Paris: J.B.M. Duprat & others, An VII [1798 First edition and a complete set with all the supplements. In this monumental and fundamental astronomical work, Laplace - the "Newton of France" - codified and developed the theories and achievements of Newton, Euler, d'Alembert, and Lagrange. "Laplace maintained that while all planets revolve round the sun their eccentricities and the inclinations of their orbits to each other will always remain small. He also showed that all these irregularities in movements and positions in the heavens were self-correcting, so that the whole solar system appeared to be mechanically stable. He showed that the universe was really a great self-regulating machine and the whole solar system could continue on its existing plan for an immense period of time. This was a long step forward from the Newtonian uncertainties in this respect?Laplace also offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth - a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve? He also investigated the theory of the tides and calculated from them the mass of the moon."-Printing & the Mind of Man 252.         A voyage round the world in the years 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788..

London: J. Johnson, 1798. Bindings rebacked, some light staining but good.. Three volumes, octavo, with 42 engraved plates and maps; contemporary marbled calf, rebacked, double labels; bookplates. First English edition (it now seems) of the official account of the tragic French voyage. The disappearance of the entire La Pérouse expedition overshadows what was in reality a great Pacific voyage; the French navigator arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788, just hours after Governor Phillip had arrived with the First Fleet.La Pérouse's habit of forwarding records whenever opportunity offered ensured their survival. The first portion was forwarded by sea from Macao; the second (Macao to Kamchatka) went overland with De Lesseps, and the final despatches by courtesy of Governor Phillip from Botany Bay. After they left Botany Bay, the expedition disappeared - and no trace of them was found for forty years.Various versions and abridgments of the narrative came out in London in 1798 as English publishers scrambled to be the first into print. Forbes has demonstrated that the traditional idea that Stockdale's edition in two volumes was the earliest English version is probably wrong and that this Johnson edition was most likely the first of several to appear (see note to Hawaiian National Bibliography, 287). The set has the early booklabel of William Younger, and the bookplates of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, with their faint stamps on title-pages, subsequently having belonged to Rodney Davidson (sale 7 March 2005, lot 97), with bookplates.

        Rolandseck [Drachenfels] und Nonnenwerth.

Artaria u. View in the Fort of Tritchinopoly

1798 - DANIELL, Thomas and William. View in the Fort of Tritchinopoly. [London]: Published as the Act directs by Thos. Daniell, December, 1798. Color-printed aquatint with hand-finishing on wove paper; plate size 25-1/2 by 19 inches. Matted and framed, entire item measures 34 by 28 inches. $4200.A lovely view from within the fortress at Trichinopoly, from Thomas and William Daniell's celebrated book Oriental Scenery, a color-printed aquatint finished by hand. The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered one of the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further 13 years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country."Thomas Daniell devoted four aquatints to Trichinopoly, since the rock and fort had become a popular symbol of British military prowess in India. Muhammad Ali, whose claim as Nawab of the Carnatic the British favored, was besieged there by the French". The young Captain Robert Clive carried out a daring diversion". and then in 1752 raised the siege of Trichinopoly in collaboration with Major Stringer Lawrence". At the top of the rock is small mandapam or pavilion up to which the Daniells climbed and obtained a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside" (Archer, Early Views of India, 111). Of this plate, Thomas Daniell wrote, "The numerous flights of steps, and different buildings to be passed through, both open and enclosed, in ascending the rock, give an awful and grand effect to its approach. The buildings higher up are the Choultries attached to the temple, where devout persons resort after performing their religious duties." Consisting of 144 views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of 24 plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801 (this plate was published in the second part); 12 plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; 24 plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; 24 plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807; and 12 further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the 24 plates of Hindoo Excavations, which are after drawings by James Wales. See Abbey, Travel 420 (plate no. 47). Near-fine condition, a lovely Daniell plate beautifully framed.

? Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 378. Horne, p. 696-"curious, both on account of the selection of the editions described, as well as the beautiful execution of the bindings." Peignot, p. 84. Pollard & Ehrman, no. 301.

"Paris: de l'Imprimerie de Fidele-Prospere" [but London], 1798. 12mo (151 x 85 mm). 155, [1 bl.] pp. Engraved frontispiece, woodcut Bourbon arms on title, title and calendar within type-ornament border. Contemporary green morocco gilt, sides panelled and with the gold-stamped Bourbon arms (i.e., arms of Louis XVIII) at center, salmon pink endpapers, gilt edges (small gouge to front joint). A small pen-and-ink drawing of a gentleman in profile inserted. Bookplate of Carlo de Poortere.*** Sixteen years before the Bourbon Restoration, in the middle of the Revolutionary Wars, this almanac was published to encourage supporters of a return of the Monarchy in the person of the Comte de Provence, future Louis XVIII (known in certain circles as Désiré), heir to the French throne after the execution of his brother Louis XVI in 1793 and the death of his young nephew Louis XVII in prison two years later. In 1798 the wandering royal exile was in Latvia, having been deported from Verona under pressure from the Directoire, the governing body of France. The title-page signals the work's agenda on multiple fronts, from the Bourbon coat-of-arms to the motto "Aimer son Roi, c'est aimer sa Patrie." Following the calendar (strictly Gregorian), a list of Kings of France, and a genealogy of Louis XVIII, the text (pp. 38-155) consists of dozens of short poems, songs, verse fables, acrostics, epigrams, invocations, and short jokes based on word-play, ranging from nostalgic paeans to the old regime to bitingly satirical parodies of the Revolution and its proponents. They may be the work of a single writer. The first poem is emblematic of the collection, opening nostagically, before moving to more somber imagery, and uses italics to highlight the ugly vocabulary of the Revolution: " Dans le vieux régime on avoit / de voyager pleine licence / et sans passe-port on pouvoit / faire vingt fois son tour-de-France / lorsque chez soi l'on demeuroit / personne n'avoit souciance / Combien de temps on y restoit / et de vous point on n'exigeoit / certificat de résidence /... Other poems grimly celebrate the death of Robespierre, deride Revolutionary publications and personnages, or promise a return of the monarchy. The unsigned engraved frontispiece (new to this edition) contains an excerpt from Louis XVIII's manifesto of March 10 1797, inscribed by a sad putto, in a pastoral setting. The citation weaves together several passages which urge a return to Religion [and the monarchy], but promote forgiveness rather than vengeance. Along with four other titles, this edition was proscribed in a public pronouncement, dated from Bourg, March 9, 1798 (16 Ventose, l'an VI of the Republican calendar), and circulated in a 2-page printed flyer (a digitized copy of the Lyon Municipal Library copy is available online). The proscription describes this very 1798 edition, including the frontispiece. Citizens are asked to turn in any booksellers or pedlars (colporteurs) caught offering this atrocious work, a large number of copies of which had been seized, along with the four other books, on the Swiss stagecoach in Geneva. Like all clandestine texts, this daring challenge to the Revolutionary regime probably circulated in multiple editions, which are not easy to distinguish without comparison of the physical copies. At least three editions under this title appeared in 1797, without place of publication but with the same fictitious imprint as this 1798 edition. Grand-Carteret describes two of these editions (held by the BnF) as 24mo, one, marked "Second edition," with a portrait of Louis XVIII. A copy in Troyes (format not stated) is identified as a "Third edition." Leber's copy of a 1797 edition (also with the portrait) is in a larger format, described as 18mo in the Rouen library's online catalogue. The contents of the present edition differ from the cited 1797 editions, and seem to include more poems and satirical pieces. It was almost certainly printed in London. The typeface appears English, the parentheses marks around the pagination were a characteristic of English printing, and the type-ornament border used for the title and calendar pages is identical to one used by Baskerville, who was widely copied in England (reproduced by Updike, Printing Types, vol. 2, pl. 274). One of the 1797 editions (see below) was also ascribed to London, by J.M.C. Leber (whose collection is now at the Rouen Municipal Library), who noted accurately, in his catalogue description, that it was "uncommon to find political books of this period, bound with the arms of the exiled king..." (his copy of the 1797 edition was bound similarly to ours). Copies of the 1797 edition(s) are held by Stanford and Princeton. Of this edition (or a different edition dated 1798) I locate one other copy, at the University of Augsburg. Not in Barbier. Cf. 2, no. 4991, transcribed verbatim in the Rouen Municipal Library online catalogue.

Sounds from the Cave in Central Park

n.p.: n.p., n.d.. Ephemera. Very Good. Broadside; 300x239mm; an 11 stanza poem, plus the moral, printed (recto only) in two columns within a decorative border; mounted to plain paper over cardboard. N.d., likely early 20th century. Flattened crease down the middle, from folding; a few small closed tears along the edges; a few small specks of soiling. A poem about an encounter with a British lion in New York's Central Park, referencing the American Revolutionary War -- specifically, the Trent Affair. Captain Charles Wilkes is mentioned by name, as are Mason, Slidell, and others, plus other well-known events (such as Bunker Hill). Wilkes (1798-1877) was an American naval officer and explorer. He led the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842 and commanded the ship in the Trent Affair during the American Civil War (1861?1865), where he attacked a Royal Mail Ship, almost leading to war between the U.S. and the UK. The moral of the poem is "If you wish to live in PEACE, always be prepared for War; for a small matter kindleth a great fire! Large enough to set the world ablaze!" Very scarce, none found on OCLC, nor in the holdings of the NY Historical Society.

Vancouver sailed to the Pacific via Australia, where he discovered and charted King George Sound and Cape Hood, passed Van Deiman's Land, and visited New Zealand, Hawaii and the Northwest Coast.
