Second printing of German architect David Gilly's seminal and famous work on country and rual architecture. The present work is one of the most successful examples of architecture integrating urban and regional planning and architecture and is probably the most important contribution to the development of Prussian Classicism. Gilly had extensive technical knowledge particularly of wooden roof structures. "One of the trendsetters within the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century electorate was David Gilly (1748-1808), a second generation Huguenot whose family had come from Provence. He established the theory and practice of rual architecture in Brandenburg-Prussia; functionality and utility were paradigms by which he desgined buildings. Through his son (1772-1800), Gilly influenced the famous romantic-classicist Klarl Friedrich Schinkel and his school." (Finney, Seeing Seeing beyond the word: visual arts and the Calvinist tradition, p. 272). David Gilly built the two castles Paretz (1796) and Freienwalde (1798) for the king of Prussia

First edition. Small 8:o. (11, 3 blanks), 394 pp. 19th century binding with light-brown calf spine and corners and dark-brown paper on the boards. The spine is divided into four gilt-edged panels one of which contains author and title information; at the foot of the spine there is a gilt-stamped floral decoration. With the signature of Axel Nybleus (1821-1899, Swedish philosopher) at top of front free endpaper and the bookplate of Johann Lyons at the bottom of front paste-down. A light, vertical crease on upper part of the spine. Two insignificant specks on the spine. Corners a bit bumped and rubbed. Minimal loss at the top corner of front free endpaper. A needle-sized hole in top margin from the title leaf until pp. 18, and in top margin of pp. 385 and onwards to the rear free endpaper. A small stain in the text on pp. 361/362. A few light specks throughout the book; contents surprisingly clean. Christian Garve (1742-1798) gained a master's degree in philosophy at the University of Halle in 1766. From 1770-1772 he was Extraordinary Professor of Mathematics and Logic at the University of Leipzig, a post he resigned from in order to devote himself to bookselling, writing and translating in his home town of Breslau. His deep interest in English philosophy led him to translate works of Adam Ferguson, Edmund Burke and Adam Smith. The book offered here is Garve's last work, and has become rather famous because, in it, he continues the criticism of Immanuel Kant's moral teachings which he had begun earlier in a review of the latter's Critique of Pure Reason and which provoked Kant into publishing an ''Anti-Garve''. Christian Garve believed that ''Kantian morality destroys all incentives that can move human beings to act at all''. Erstausgabe des letzten Werkes von Garve. Halbledereinband mit Rückenvergoldung. Sehr gut erhalten. Selten. Ziegenfuss I, 375

        Death of General Montgomery.

Engraving by J.F. Clemens after a painting by John Trumbull. Published in London, February 1798, by A.C. de Poggi. 6th state. 56x79 cm. Fine impression. Minimal foxing. In monumental mid-19th century golden frame.. Swane 266. Fine impression of this great print, showing the heroic death of American general Richard Montgomery (1738-1775) during the siege of Quebec. Montgomery is the central figure in the picture, surrounded by soldiers in various uniforms, scouts and even an Indian volunteer.** Richard Montgomery was born in Ireland. Initially he served the British forces in North America, but changed side and became second in command in the Montreal expedition during the War of Independence.*** John Trumbull´s (1756-1843) painting is a good example of his very narrative pictures from the War of Independence. He met the talented Danish engraver J.F. Clemens (1748-1831) in London while the latter considered pursuing an international career. The first impression was published in 1795, and Clemens was payed no less than 1050 Guineas for his work

Experiments to determine the Density of the Earth,

Cavendish's celebrated paper calculating the weight of the earth using John Michell's torsion balance. PHOTOGRAPHS SENT ON REQUEST. First Edition, extracted from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, vol. 88, 1798, pp. 469-526 and with 2 engraved folding plates. Small quarto, half calf gilt in period style, plates slightly foxed. "The apparatus consisted of two lead balls on either end of a suspended beam; these movable balls were attracted by a pair of stationary lead balls. Cavendish calculated the force of attraction between the balls from the observed period of oscillation of the balance and deduced the density of the earth from the force. He found it to be 5.48 times that of water. Cavendish was the first to observe gravitational motions induced by comparatively minute portions of ordinary matter. The attractions that he measured were unprecedentedly small, being only 1/500,000,000 times as great as the weight of the bodies. By weighing the world he rendered the law of gravitation complete. The law was no longer a proportionality statement but a quantitatively exact one; this was the most important addition to the science of gravitation since Newton." (D.S.B III:158). Norman 422.
