Carte d Asie dressee pour l instruction.

Artist: Dezauche JA; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1798 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 62; - description: Map shows total Asia with southeast Asia, Turkey and Arabia; -vita of the artist: J. A. Dezauche was the successor to Guillaume De L'Isle and Philipe Buache. Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas.Like many cartographers of these days, De L isle did not travel with the explorers and elaborated the maps mostly in his office. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network that would provide him first-hand information. Given the family?s reputation and his own, De L isle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were coming back from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he was also aware of recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of his source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered, but no one else could validate it, so Delisle warned the viewer that its actual existence was in doubt. De L isle 's search for exactitude and intellectual honesty entangled him in a legal dispute in 1700 with Jean-Baptiste Nolin, a fellow cartographer. Noticing Nolin had used details that were considered original from his Map of the World, De L isle dragged Nolin in court to prove his plagiarism. In the end, Delisle managed to convince the jury of scientists that Nolin only knew the old methods of cartography and therefore that he had stolen the information from his manuscript. Nolin's maps were confiscated and he was forced to pay the court costs. The scientificity of the work produced by the De L isle family contrasted with the workshop of Sanson. While Sanson knowingly published outdated facts and mistakes, De L isle strived to present up-to-date knowledge. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Early 19th century half calf, rubbed and soiled, inside throughout brown spotted, ownership entry in ink on title: Gierth, mostly probably the author of Wiener Zimmermann Very rare architectural work, as the foreword writes intended to give: Ideas for the refinement of larger ob-jects (Ideen zur Veredelung grösserer Gegenstände) similar to Grohmann’s Ideen-Magazin. The publisher Friedrich August Leo found in Friedrich Meinert the person to collect and comment on the architectural designs of Saxonian architects. Meinert’s text for each design is disciplined and strictly systematic. It starts with a brief characterization, describes the respective ground plan in ist functional arrangement, then goes over to the exterior views and makes suggestions for the color design and the ideal surrounding situation for the building. Finally, there are some details about the ideal resident of the respective house. Friedrich Meinert (1757-1828), was professor of philosophy at the University of Halle. In 1797 he began his military career as a Royal Prussian Lieutenant in the Second Engineers Brigade; taught fortifications and fortress war at the Military Engineering Academy in Potsdam. He was a prolific scientist who wrote on astronomy, geodesy, econo-mics and architecture. He was the first to "apply mathematics for the well being of the state and ist citizens, not so much to questions of distribution and political welfare as to economic law and theory, and above all to a multitude of technical questions that fall under the jurisdiction of the government: structural engineering in construction inspections; ballistics for artillery; mechanics and machinery in mills, transport, manufacturing, and mining." - not in Millard, Fowler, et al. Lit.: Rüdiger Campe: "The Game of Probability: Literature and Calculation from Pascal to Kleist" (2012). Klaus Jan Philipp. Um 1800. Architekturtheorie und Architekturkritik in Deutschland. 1997. pp. 134 - 139. Ingenieur-Akademie in Potsdam. SECOND EDITION SUBTITLE: cont.: "And a Small Part of Chinese Tartary. Together With a Relation of the Voyage Undertaken on the occasion by His Majesty's Ship the Lion, and the Ship Hindostan, in the East India Company's Service, to the Yellow Sea, and gulf of Peking; as Well as of Their Return to Europe; With Notices of the Several Places Where they Stopped in Their Way Out and Home; being the Islands of Madeira, Tenerife, and St. Jago; the Port of Rio de Janeiro in South America; the Islands of St. Helena, Tristan d'Acunha, and Amsterdam [Island]; the Coasts of Java, and Sumatra, the Nanka Isles, Pulo-Condore, and Cochin-China. Taken Chiefly from the Papers of His Excellency The Earl of Macartney, Knight of the Bath, His Majesty's Embassador [sic] Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Emperor of China; Sir Erasmus Gower, Commander of the Expedition and of other Gentlemen in the Several Departments of the Embassy." *** THE OFFICIAL RECORD: The official account of Earl McCartney's informative but unsuccessful mission to establish formal diplomatic and commercial relations with China. Staunton accompanied the Embassy as Secretary & compiled his book chiefly from the papers of the Ambassador & his fellow envoys. A fascinating true history of the expedition, useful primary source. *** By and large, the best single English language item done on China in the 18th century ! George Staunton [1737-1801] was a British diplomat, in 1774 Dr. Samuel Johnson met Staunton and they became life-long friends. Although the official mission to China failed, a wealth of precious information was collected and published in this first comprehensive official account. During this period of time, Great Britain was anxious to establish formal diplomatic relations with China and open usual trade relations. The unwilling Chinese resisted all Western foreign intervention in China. In the end Stanton's gifts and arguments were rejected by the Emperor. *** THE SECOND EDITION: This being the "Second Edition, Correct" edition of 1798. Uniformly bound in three full calf volumes, with 5 raised spine bands, gold stamped spine decorations, two red leather labels with gold stamping one the spines, [vol.1 lacking volume number label], else complete. * CONDITION: The set is solidly bound, with minimal wear to the edges. Volume 3 has mis-numbered pages 32 & 212. Also in vol. 3 there is some feint and minor stain to the edges of six locations, this is by and large in the margins, and does not affect much text. We are being overly critical, some of this is almost unnoticeable. Else the paper is very clean, no foxing or other issues. All hinges intact, there is a 3 cm. small split to the lower spine front edge of vol. 3, which has been reinforced, it is not solid and firm. There are a few old minor stains to the covers. By and large a handsome set, in period full leather bindings. The set has discreet armorial book plates. Please see scans posted to our website. **** There is bibliographical evidence that this set came with two maps a chart, but this copy has no list of maps nor any hint of maps being removed. This work was clearly bound with out any maps or charts at all. **** BIBLIOGRAPHY: E. Cox: A REFERENCE GULIDE TO THE LITERATURE OF TRAVEL, P.334-345. * Lust 545. * H. H. H.       Richmond: Printed by Samuel Pleasants, 1798 - 8vo, original quarter sheep and blue paper boards. The first book by William Munford (1775-1825), a collection of verse, prose and one play. The play is entitled "Almoran and Hamet, A Tragedy founded on an Eastern Tale of the Name." Lacking the free endpapers; some foxing and wear; overall a very good copy. In his prefatory remarks, Roscoe, who dedicates his efforts in sonnet to his wife, illustrates his passion for the piece, stating; 'The subject is in a high degree interesting, and is treated in a manner peculiarly pointed and direct, yet without violating that decorum which is due to the public at large, and in particular to the sex to whom it is addressed'.         A voyage of discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and round the world; in which the coast of north-west America has been carefully examined and accurately surveyed. principally with a view to ascertain the existence of any navigable communication between the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans; and performed in the years 1790, 1791, 1792, 1794, and 1795, in the Discovery Sloop of War, and Armed Tender Chatham, under the command of Captain George Vancouver.

London Robinson and Edwards 1798 - First edition. 4 volumes comprising 3 volumes 4to text, 1 volume atlas folio, half-titles to volumes I and III, 34 engraved plates and maps (17 engraved views printed on large paper and one map in text volumes, atlas with 10 maps and 6 coastal profiles, all folding); text volumes contemporary tree calf gilt, black and red morocco labels, nautical motifs to spines, atlas modern half calf to match, neat repairs to extremities, a fine set. First edition of one of the most difficult geographical surveys ever undertaken. Vancouver's voyage ranks among the most important in exploration literature. George Vancouver (1757-1798) had gained valuable experience on Cook's second and third voyages. He sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he discovered King George's sound and Cape Hood, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America. In three seasons' work Vancouver surveyed the coast of California, visited San Francisco and San Diego and other Spanish settlements in Alta California investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca, discovered the Strait of Georgia, circumnavigated Vancouver Island, and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson Bay. "Of all the men who served under Cook, Vancouver was the only one whose work as a hydrographic surveyor placed him in the same class as his mentor. The care Vancouver took with the health of his crew during this voyage also mirrored Cook's achievements Almost all the names given by Vancouver on the north-west coast of America have survived" (ODNB). Vancouver retired to Surrey in 1795 to revise his journal for publication; the work was uncompleted on his death in 1798, and was completed by his brother John.

Copper engraved view of Santiago de Chile, by Brambila, ca. 1798. One of the most influent views of Chili´s Capital city, engraved by Brambila "Brambila lo delineó y gravó". Brambila (1763 - 1832) was an Italian artist of considerably ability; in 1789 he joined Alejandro Malaspina's scientific expedition as the official draughtsman. The crew included scientist, professional sailors and other artists. The position allowed him to visit Argentina & Chile -travelling by foot on occasions-, as well as Guam, Macau, the Philippines, amongst others. So celebrated were his designs made during the voyage, that in 1798, upon his return to Madrid, he was appointed "Pintor de Cámara". Malaspina´s voyage came in a difficult time for Spain; as a result the monumental work that had been planned never came to light. After five years at sea Malaspina returned home in 1794 and found the political situation of Spain not to his liking: his liberal tendencies led to his imprisonment in 1796 and exile after his release in 1802. His seven-volume account of his expedition was suppressed and remained unpublished until the late 19th century.

A Letter Of Protest Concerning A Robert Morris Unfulfilled Promissory Note; Morris Was Already In Debtor's Prison When This Was Filed

DS. 1pg. 8" x 13". July 21, 1798. Philadelphia. A letter of protest signed "Peter Lohra", protesting the bad promissory note written by John Nicholson to Robert Morris on July 17, 1795. The partly printed document states to condition of the bounced note at the top, then states "Be it known, That on the Day of the Date hereof, I, Peter Lohra, Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, by lawful authority duly Commissioned and Sworn, residing in the City of Philadelphia, in the said Commonwealth, at the Request of Mr. Walter Smith went to the Compting House of John Nicholson drawer of the original promissory note whereof the above is a true copy in order to demand payment but found the same shut up and no person there to answer or pay the said note wherefore I left notice of the nonpayment thereof at the Compting House of Robert Morris the indorser [sic] Whereupon I, the said Notary, at the Request aforesaid, Have and Do hereby solemnly Protest against the Drawer of the said Promissory Note, and all others concerned, for all Exchange, re-Exchange, Costs, Damages, and Interest suffered and to be suffered for want of Payment thereof. Thus Done and Protested at Philadelphia aforesaid, the twenty-first Day of July 1798. In Testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my Hand, and affixed my Notarial Seal, the Day and Year abovewritten." At the top of the document is a handwritten copy of the bad promissory note, dated July 18, 1795 and signed by Nicholson and Morris; it states "Three years after date I promise to pay Robt Morris Esqr or order Five thousand Dollars for value received." Obviously, the 1795 promissory note was never paid, and Morris was already in debtors prison by the time this letter of protest was filed. The document has an embossed seal in the lower left corner and was folded three times. The condition is fine.

Tremsbüttel, 21. VII. 1798. - 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Hiemit wär also diese kleine Geschichte beendiget. - Christian Stolberg selbst verkaufte zwei Jahre darauf, also i.

Consequences of a successful French invasion

No. 1. Plate 1st.  "We come to recover your long lost liberties" - Scene. The House of Commons. London: James Gillray, March 1st 1798. Etching printed in sanguine, 315 x 360 mm (edge of image, including text), trimmed, laid on paper, old creases and dicolouration, a few areas of loss to lower margin. A satirical depiction of the House of Commons if the planned French invasion was successful, a caption in the image reads 'This house adjourned to Botany Bay' with the members of the House garbed as convicts, shackled for their journey. The first of a series of four plates engraved by Gillray after descriptions written by Sir John Dalrymple, which illustrate the impact Napoleon's invasion would have on English society. The text descriptions by Dalrymple were originally published in a prospectus, with twenty plates intended to complete the series. Dalrymple hoped the etchings would take on the form of popular propoganda, and so they were priced at sixpence each (uncoloured, a shilling coloured), rather than the usual shilling (or two, if coloured). Gillrary was unhappy with this price, and so only four plates were completed of the twenty, and the remainder, while described in Dalrymple's original prospectus, never created. The plate was restruck in a more commonly found edition by Bohn in the 1850s, but the original 1798 impression is rare. KING, Jonathan. The other side of the coin : a cartoon history of Australia.         The Wild Huntsman's Chase. From the German of Bürger, Author of Lenore.

Printed and sold by Sampson Low . sold also by R. Faulder, and E. Booker., London 1798 - First edition in book form, the Schwerdt and Duke of Gloucester copy, of this anonymous translation of Bürger's 'Der Wilde Jäger'. A note on the leaf following the title states: 'The following Translation appeared in one of the public prints on the 26th of October, 1796. A few weeks after an elegant version of the Ballad, which had been advertised about the same time, was given to the Public by another hand, under the title of The Chase' [referring Sir Walter Scott's first published literary work The Chase and William and Helen: Two Ballads from the German of Gottfried Augustus Bürger]. The present translation received surprisingly few contemporary notices and the Critical Review remarked that the work would probably never have been translated had it not been for the 'great and deserved reputation of Lenore', the work which brought Bürger European fame. 4to (258 × 196 mm), pp. 15, [1]; twentieth-century three quarter calf, gilt; Schwerdt and Gloucester bookplates; a fine copy.

Vade-mecum medicum, in duas partes divisum, ...Leiden, Abraham and Jan Honkoop, 1800. 12mo. Contemporary mottled boards.

Cowen, America's pre-pharmacopoeial literature, pp. 21-22; STCN (1 copy); Founders online (letters to Tazewell from Washington and Jefferson); Wellcome V, p. 241; WorldCat (2 copies). Rare second edition of "the first general (as distinguished from hospital) 'pharmacopoeia' compiled by an American" (Cowen), first published at Paris in 1798. The first part of the book is a classification of diseases, and is taken word for word from the influential 1769 nosology by the Scottish physician William Cullen. The second part is a pharmacopoeia, divided into materia medica and composite medicines. The introduction notes that it is based on the author's notes made at the University of Edinburgh, the London pharmacopoeia and Joseph Townsend's The physicians' vade mecum (1794) (p. x). Between the two parts can be found a list translating the Latin names of the chemical preparations, "which not all readers will view as sufficiently legitimate" (p. 77) into the modern English and French nomenclature.William Tazewell (d. 1832) was an American physician who had studied in Edinburgh and in 1797-1800 was secretary to Elbridge Gerry in Paris. After returning to the United States, Tazewell set up a medical practice in Williamsburg and later moved to Virginia. In 1803 he presented copies of his Vade-mecum to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, the latter writing that "it has really brought the whole science of diseases & remedies within the shortest compass possible, and, not meddling with the details of the science himself, it presents exactly such a general view of every part of it, as [Jefferson] often wishes to take" (Cowen). With a small price in pen on the first flyleaf. Only some thumbing on the last 30 pages, otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed. Boards slightly worn and spine cracked, but still structurally sound.

Richmond: Printed by Samuel Pleasants, 1798. 8vo, original quarter sheep and blue paper boards. The first book by William Munford (1775-1825), a collection of verse, prose and one play. Munford was a native of Virginia and the son of Revolutionary War soldier and dramatist Robert Munford (d. 1784). In his poetry, Munford skillfully lampoons politicians, as his father did in his plays, but there are also patriotic and historical poems, such as his piece on the Battle of Fallen Timbers, entitled "A Poem on the Defeat of General St. Clair." The play is entitled "Almoran and Hamet, A Tragedy founded on an Eastern Tale of the Name." Lacking the free endpapers; some foxing and wear; overall a very good copy.

London: Printed for J. Debrett, 1798. 78pp. 19th-century three-quarter sheep and marbled boards, spine gilt. Clean internally. Good. In a red half morocco and cloth slipcase and chemise. First English edition of these controversial diplomatic exchanges, which first appeared in President John Adams' MESSAGE... of April 3, 1798 in Philadelphia. The incident known as the XYZ Affair had its origins in a French attempt to coerce a bribe from American envoys in order to engage in negotiations to improve relations between the two countries. The incident only served to sour Franco-American relations, leading to the so-called "Quasi War." These French machinations were of great interest to the English, who had been at war with France for several years, hence the present publication. Included here are the instructions to the American ministers, and a series of letters detailing the French demands or bribes. Not in Howes. SABIN 2446.
