Lyrical Ballads, with a few other poems.

Printed for J. & A. Arch 1798 - FIRST EDITION, second issue, lightly toned, errata leaf present but advertisement leaf discarded, pp. [ii], v, [3], 69, [2], 70-210, [2], 8vo, nineteenth-century biscuit calf, boards bordered with a triple gilt fillet, neatly rebacked to style with dark brown morocco lettering pieces and gilt tooling in spine compartments, old leather a little darkened and cracked at the edge of the repair, very good. The London, or second, issue of the first edition of the foundational text of the Romantic movement - the title-page cancelled replacing the original Bristol imprint. Five hundred copies had been printed but sales were so slow that Cottle, the Bristol publisher, sold most of them on in bulk to Arch. Slow sales did not prevent the second edition, expanded into two volumes and with some textual changes, from appearing in 1800. Wordsworth's poem 'The Convict' was omitted from later editions, among other textual changes. In this copy the misprint on p. 19 is corrected by hand, but on p. 204 'woods' and 'thought' are intact.         The Republican Judge: Or the American Liberty of the Press, As.

1798 - London, 1798. Freedom of the Press During the Federalist Period [Cobbett, William (1763-1835)]. The Republican Judge: Or the American Liberty of the Press, As Exhibited, Explained, And Exposed, In the Base and Partial Prosecution of William Cobbett, For a Pretended Libel Against The King of Spain and His Embassador, Before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. With an Address to the People of England By Peter Porcupine. London: Printed for J. Wright, opposite Old Bond Street, Piccadilly, 1798. [11], 96, [2] pp. With a half-title, advertisement leaves on recto and verso of rear wrapper. Octavo (8" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in original printed wrappers bound into recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards. Some soiling and edgewear to wrappers, "William Cobbett" and struck-through "Cobdett" in large early hand to front wrapper, moderate toning and light foxing to text. $1,250. * Only English edition, one of four issues from 1798. Cobbett was an important liberal English pamphleteer and journalist, later a Member of Parliament. A former soldier, he wrote The Soldier's Friend (1792), a protest against the poor treatment of enlisted men. Fearing reprisal from a group of officers, he moved to the United States, where he lived from 1792 to 1800. He established a career in Philadelphia as a pro-British journalist and pamphleteer under the pseudonym "Peter Porcupine." Also printed in 1798, The Republican Judge was originally published in Philadelphia as The Democratic Judge. As indicated by its subtitle, it is an account of a unsuccessful libel case against Cobbett and an essay on freedom of the press. A notable historical document about the role of a partisan journalist in the early days of the Republic, it also provides insights into the kind and degree of newspaper censorship exerted by the federal government during the Federalist period.

A Montpellier: De lÂ’imprimerie de Fontenay-Picot, rue des ci-devant Capucins, No. 200, an VI [1798]. A Montpellier: De limprimerie de Fontenay-Picot, rue des ci-devant Capucins, No. 200,, an VI [1798]. First printing. Paperback. Fine. 8vo ; [i ;viii ; 110 pages, errata (i) ; i] First edition, untrimmed and uncut. Still in the printers marbled wrapper. Condition is fine. This copy is signed and inscribed by the author: " au Citoyen Baraillon, Médn de la santé de Montpellier, comme un faible témoinage dattachement et dEstime, de la part de lauteur. H. Fouquet. " This copy also has the hand corrections in ink of the author in addition to the Errata. An interesting report on the weather in Year IV (1797) and the subsequent local illness. The winter of 1797-98 was marked by extreme cold, wind (Sirocco) and ice. Dr. Fouquet recorded the barometric readings. He records chimneys being blown down on the first Sunday in Lent, doors yanked off their hinges, trees uprooted, even an earthquake. He remarks on the quality of a thermometer from Reaumur. Herds of sheep died. The illnesses which followed this extreme weather are recorded, as are treatments with lipécacuanha et la rhubarbe; racine de columbo, et de cachou, lextrait de quinquina. Fouquet records other treatments of other doctors in use at the time of his writing and discusses advantages of various treatments. He gives a graphic description of the progression of a gastric complaint that became septicemia. He refers to other bad winters, such as the winter of 1773. He also observed the usefulness of the pulse as essential diagnostic data. Autopsies were performed to determine causes of deaths. Dr. Fouquet writes a very interesting description of the physical conditions that warrant the use of the word epidemic. Fouquet devotes many pages to a comparative study of epidemics from Galen, Hippocrates and Prosper Martian forward to his own time in the work of Plenciz, Stoll, Grant, Huxam, Rivière, Giudetti, Baillou, Santa-Cruce, Hoffmann, Robert and Baglivi. Of great interest is the thorough comparison of treatments of fever (with quinquina) and of the history of treatments for péripneumonie. This is an extraordinary account of an epidemic caused by prolonged extreme weather (torrential rains) followed by prolonged cold and the public health response directed by Dr. Fouquet. Two copies were located in the United States at the Harvard Medical School and in the National Library of Medicine. Five additional copies were found in France, none recorded as being signed or annotated by the author.

A good, sound, copy. First edition in Swedish of Mary Wollstonecraft's Letters written during a short residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark> (London, 1796). Windle A7h. Mary's lover Gilbert Imlay, the father of Fanny (born 1794), had suffered the theft of a valuable cargo by the Norwegian captain of his ship, and in 1794 Imlay suggested to Mary that she travel there on his behalf to get compensation and call in various debts. Despite having the responsibility of her young baby, Mary Wollstonecraft agreed and spent nearly four months travelling to remote and unfamiliar destinations to meet and bargain with officials, studying local customs, enjoying strange landscapes and undergoing risky sea journeys. The Letters> themselves were all written to Imlay. 'She was a good travel writer; although the Letters> were touched with melancholy [and] personal complaints, they were also full of sharply sketched accounts of the people she met and the manner in which they amused or shocked her, the social condition she found and the northern scenery of rocks, waterfalls and forests in its summer incarnation'. [Claire Tomalin, Life>, pp.189-190]. Mary was actually away on her Scandinavian adventure from April to October 1795. She and Imlay separated permanently soon after her return to London. The original Dutch edition appeared as two separate works: Reize van Zeeland over Kaap de Goede Hoop naar Batavia, Bantam, Bengalen, enz. gedaan in de jaaren 1768 tot 1771, published in 1793 (Landwehr VOC 296), and Reize van Zeeland over de Kaap de Goede Hoop en Batavia, naar Samarang, Macasser, Amboina, Suratte enz. gedaan in de jaaren 1774-1778, published in 1797 (Landwehr VOC 297). Beekman, in his study of Dutch colonial literature, believes that the English translation actually "improves on the original; by rectifying inaccuracies and errors" (Beekman, Fugitive Dreams: an Anthology of Dutch Colonial Literature, p.49, n.14). Stavorinus (1739-1788) was a postmaster with the Dutch navy. With few opportunities for action at the time in the navy, Stavorinus turned to the merchant fleet and the Dutch East India Company for service overseas. "Between 1768 and 1778, he undertook several trading voyages, visiting most of the Dutch trading posts in South Africa and Asia, maintaining detailed logs on his travels by sea and land" (Moore, "Johan Splinter Stavorinus' Voyages to the East Indies, Patriot in an Age of Reason", in Canadian Journal of Netherlandic Studies, 1991:12, n.p.). His accounts of these voyages present extensive descriptions of the Dutch colonies in Asia, covering a range of topics including local government, the role of the VOC, customs and history, flora and fauna, as well as extensive notes on the conditions of travel. The English edition was one of the few contemporary, up-to-date accounts of Java available to Stamford Raffles while planning the British invasion of the island. Clarke, New Bond-Street, London., Carlisle 1798 - Sole edition of the Carlisle poet's first collection (his dialect collection Ballads in the Cumberland Dialect followed in 1805). After a brief Quaker education in his home town, Anderson worked as a calico printer and as apprentice to a pattern drawer, a trade which took him to London, where he is said to have been inspired by songs heard at Vauxhall Gardens (Oxford DNB).This first collection was not widely noticed (in comparison with the Ballads), but the Monthly Visitor, and Pocket Companion of October 1799 devoted a few lines to it. 'This poet is self-educated, and therefore his productions must not be severely scrutinized .

Artist: Dezauche JA; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1798 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 62; - description: Map shows total Asia with southeast Asia, Turkey and Arabia; -vita of the artist: J. A. Dezauche was the successor to Guillaume De L'Isle and Philipe Buache. Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas.Like many cartographers of these days, De L isle did not travel with the explorers and elaborated the maps mostly in his office. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network that would provide him first-hand information. Given the family?s reputation and his own, De L isle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were coming back from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he was also aware of recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of his source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered, but no one else could validate it, so Delisle warned the viewer that its actual existence was in doubt. De L isle 's search for exactitude and intellectual honesty entangled him in a legal dispute in 1700 with Jean-Baptiste Nolin, a fellow cartographer. Noticing Nolin had used details that were considered original from his Map of the World, De L isle dragged Nolin in court to prove his plagiarism. In the end, Delisle managed to convince the jury of scientists that Nolin only knew the old methods of cartography and therefore that he had stolen the information from his manuscript. Nolin's maps were confiscated and he was forced to pay the court costs. The scientificity of the work produced by the De L isle family contrasted with the workshop of Sanson. While Sanson knowingly published outdated facts and mistakes, De L isle strived to present up-to-date knowledge. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Early 19th century half calf, rubbed and soiled, inside throughout brown spotted, ownership entry in ink on title: Gierth, mostly probably the author of Wiener Zimmermann Very rare architectural work, as the foreword writes intended to give: Ideas for the refinement of larger ob-jects (Ideen zur Veredelung grösserer Gegenstände) similar to Grohmann’s Ideen-Magazin. The publisher Friedrich August Leo found in Friedrich Meinert the person to collect and comment on the architectural designs of Saxonian architects. Meinert’s text for each design is disciplined and strictly systematic. It starts with a brief characterization, describes the respective ground plan in ist functional arrangement, then goes over to the exterior views and makes suggestions for the color design and the ideal surrounding situation for the building. Finally, there are some details about the ideal resident of the respective house. Friedrich Meinert (1757-1828), was professor of philosophy at the University of Halle. In 1797 he began his military career as a Royal Prussian Lieutenant in the Second Engineers Brigade; taught fortifications and fortress war at the Military Engineering Academy in Potsdam. He was a prolific scientist who wrote on astronomy, geodesy, econo-mics and architecture. He was the first to "apply mathematics for the well being of the state and ist citizens, not so much to questions of distribution and political welfare as to economic law and theory, and above all to a multitude of technical questions that fall under the jurisdiction of the government: structural engineering in construction inspections; ballistics for artillery; mechanics and machinery in mills, transport, manufacturing, and mining." - not in Millard, Fowler, et al. Lit.: Rüdiger Campe: "The Game of Probability: Literature and Calculation from Pascal to Kleist" (2012). Klaus Jan Philipp. Um 1800. Architekturtheorie und Architekturkritik in Deutschland. 1997. pp. 134 - 139. Ingenieur-Akademie in Potsdam. Palau, 185979. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
