The second rule of the Harmonic Society states that "No Person whatsoever shall be eligible into this Society but Noblemen, Gentlemen, and Professional Men, who reside in Bath or its Vicinity, or who may occasionally visit it." Could they have out-sung all those Welshmen in the dissenting churches? ESTC T90829 locates a copy of the first edition of 1979 in the BL only, while what seems to be a second issue (N70113) has a publication date of 1798 (Duke only). Two printings designated "second edition" are recorded, one with 180 pages and a plate (4 copies, Berkeley and North Carolina only in the US), the other with 152 pages and no plate (9 copies, Folger, Huntington, Virginia in the US). First Bastien Edition, entirely revised and enlarged, of this rural and domestic encyclopedia. The work has its origins in Charles Estienne's Praedium Rusticum (1554), the French version of which was edited and seen through the press by Jean Liébault in 1564 under the title L'Agriculture et Maison Rustique. Numerous editions, revisions, and updates followed, with French horticulturalist Louis Liger's two-volume modernized version, Oeconomie Générale de la Compagne, ou Nouvelle Maison Rustique, first appearing in 1700. Bastien has here completely revised and rearranged the text, and made copious additions in terms of both text and illustrations. The work includes sections on buildings and provisions, agriculture, husbandry, silk worm culture, bee-keeping, diseases of plants and animals, gardening, viticulture, hunting, fishing, distillation, apothecary medicine, and cookery. Illustrating the text are sixty engraved plates of domestic animals, plants and trees, honey and silk production, field cultivation, wine presses, fishing nets, animal traps, farming instruments, &c.       - Hannover, the author & Hahn, 1798-1823. 27 parts in 25. 4to (310 x 250mm). With 159 (of 162) beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary wrappers, uncut. A very fine uncut copy in its original wrappers of one of the rarest works on South African botany. The last parts are particularly rare due to the well-known 'Napoleonic Pause' the disruption of most of Western Europe's cultural life caused by wars waged by Napoleon and the aftermath. In our copy 3 plates are lacking in part 14. Johann Christoph Wendland (1755-1828) was chief-gardener at Herrenhausen. The fine plates are after drawings by the author and the great majority depict South African species. Dr. W.Junk in his 'Junk Rara' writes that he does not remember having seen a complete copy. The only complete copy to have been on the market in the last decades is the Plesh copy sold at auction in 1976.Kerkham, 'Southern African Botanical Literature', 723; Stafleu & Cowan 17.132.         Athenian Letters or, the Epistolary Correspondence of an Agent of the Kingof Persia, residing at Athens during the Peloponnesian War. . A New Edition, to which is prefixed a Geographical Index. In Two Volumes. Illustrated with Engravings, and a Map

Cadell and Davies, London, 1798, - (YORKE, Philip, Earl of Hardwicke). Athenian Letters: or, the Epistolary Correspondence of an Agent of the King of Persia, residing at Athens during the Peloponnesian War. A New Edition, to which is prefixed a Geographical Index. In Two Volumes. Illustrated with Engravings, and a Map of Ancient Greece. London : Printed for T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies in the Strand, 1798.4to, Pp (4), [i] - lxii, (2), [1] - 436, (4), + engraved frontispiece (portrait of Philip Earl of Hardwicke), large folding cloth-backed map of Greece, and 7 engraved plates. Vol 2: Pp (4), [i] - xv, (1), [1] - 466, (4), + 5engraved plates. Bound in exquisite full tree calf with gilt décor and lettering on spine, gilt dentelles and edges to boards, and black and wine coloured morocco labels on spine. "The Authors of these Letters were a Societyof Friends, who were contemporaries at the University of Cambridge, about the years 1739 and 1740; all their names (except that of the Writer of thisPreface) were an ornament to the place. The world was unfortunately deprived of the talents, virtues, and services of one of them, when they were mostwanted, both by his own Profession and by the Public: not above two or three of the set are now living ; they lament theloss of their colleagues, and cultivate the remembrance of their former friendly connection. The learned, into whose hands these Letters may fall, will best judge how correctly the manners of antiquity are kept up, and how truly the history of those times is represented in them." Binding of volume I repaired, light wear to edges, lacking the engraved frontispiece for Vol.II (portrait of Charles Yorke), some foxing to plates and map, slight scattered foxing elsewhere, marginal tear to leaf 413/414 of Vol. 1. An attractive set. 1,350.00 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Flora Bedfordiensis, Comprehending such Plants as Grow Wild in the County of Bedford, Arranged According to the System of Linnaeus, with Occasional Remarks.

Printed by W. Smith Bedford 1798 - First Edition, xii,351,[9]pp., presentation inscription from the author, 6 cont. hand-coloured engraved plates, cont. half, 2 contrasting gilt lettered morocco labels, paper shelf label to spine, a nice copy. This is the third English local flora, after Ray (Cambridge) and Sibthorp (Oxford), and the first in English. Although the BM (NH) copy has coloured plates, and Henry calls for them, this book is usually found with uncoloured plates, coloured copies an extremely rare in commerce. "A work described by one authority as 'almost a model as a county flora'. Abbot's carefully prepared Flora bedfordiensis is written entirely in English, except for the first two words of the title and the Linnaean botanical names of the plants. It lists 1325 flowering plants and cryptogams. A brief description of each species is followed by the general place of growth, and in the case of some rare plants, the precise locality". (Henry).         British Public Characters of 1798

London, Printed for R. Phillips,, 1798. Octavo (225 × 137 mm.) Uncut in original boards neatly rebacked to style with a new label. Folding frontispiece of thirty small portrait sketches. Light browning, some foxing to the frontispiece, but overall very good. First Edition. The very first biographical notice of Nelson, not noted by Cowie, published soon after his triumph on the Nile at Aboukir, the beginning of his rise to Glory; "In every point of view, we are warranted in concluding, that Lord Nelson has rendered a most important service to humanity by his late and decisive victory. If the hostile cabinets of Europe should prudently avail themselves of its impression upon the enemy... an honourable and glorious peace may be the happy result." His portrait is the first on the folding frontispiece, quite a good likeness, most closely resembling the Orme portrait. Other Naval "characters" noted are Lords Hood and Duncan and Sir Sydney Smith, amongst the others are Erasmus Darwin, Lord Monboddo, Isaac D'Israeli, Mrs. Siddons, William Herschel and Joseph Priestley. The first of a series which was to run for some 12 years under the title Public Characters, a great success, perhaps partly on the basis of this summary of the career of "England's Saviour," this volume ran through four editions by 1803. The first edition is decidedly uncommon.

Numerous folding tables throughout the text. Octavo text volumes with quarto atlas. Contemporary three- quarter calf and marbled boards, spines gilt, leather labels. One text volume expertly rebacked, with original spine and label. A handsome copy in very good plus condition, with the Errata leaf present in all five text volumes. First edition, octavo issue. An account of the second French circumnavigation and the first French commercial voyage to the Pacific Northwest. Marchand, commander of the voyage, had learned of the lucrative potential for the fur trade in that region from British captain Portlock. He sailed via Cape Horn, stopped at the Marquesas, and traded along the Northwest Coast in the summer of 1791. He provides detailed descriptions of Norfolk Sound and Sitka, followed by a particularly detailed account of the Queen Charlotte Islands, and further explorations as far as the southern end of Vancouver Island. Besides the lengthy descriptions of the country and the Indian inhabitants, the author gives the most extensive history of exploration on the Northwest Coast up to this time, including the voyages of Drake, Juan de Fuca, de Fuentes, Bering, Cook, La Pérouse, Meares, Dixon, Colnett, Malaspina, Roggeveen, etc. Two editions were published in 1798-1800, one consisting of four volumes and one of six. Howes rates them both "b." "A most important work for the history of geographical discovery in the Northwest" -Hill. "A very important and authoritative work for the history of the Northwest Coast" -Lada-Mocarski. From North America Marchand sailed to Hawaii and then to Macao, where he failed to sell his valuable cargo of furs. He then returned to France, where the Revolutionary government confiscated his cargo. The voyage was a loss for its investors. Marchand died in 1793 and Count Fleurieu, himself an experienced Pacific explorer, took over the editing and publication of the material from the voyage, as well as adding an authoritative history of Pacific exploration and discoveries along the American coast. Considerable text is also devoted to natural history exploration en route. The detailed maps are of Alaska and the Northwest Coast, the Marquesas, and Hawaii. HILL 612. STREETER SALE 3496. Sehr selten. MENTHAE BRITANNICAE: BEING A NEW BOTANICAL ARRANGEMENT OF ALL THE BRITISH MINTS HITHERTO DISCOVERED. Illustrated with twenty-four Copper-plates, of the natural Size, Done from the Life by able Artists; Exhibiting a Figure of every distinct Mint herein treated of, Including all those enumerated by Ray and Hudson; Together with Several new Species hitherto unnoticed. By W. Sole.

Printed by R. Crutwell, Bath; and sold by Messrs. White, Fleet-Street; Bull and Co. and J. Barratt, Bath; Gilbert, Dublin; Hanwell, Oxford; and Hodson, Cambridge. 1798 - Folio. 9.75 x 13.5 inches. viii + 55 pp. + [1] pp. corrigenda. Illustrated by 24 engraved plates. Lacks plate 14, which has been replaced by a photocopy. Half-title. Bound in original green half morocco over marbled boards, rebacked with spine divided into compartments by raised bands and gilt rules, with red morocco label, gilt, now eroded. Extremities worn. Stain to upper blank margin of last leaf and isolated spotting elsewhere, otherwise a fine copy. 'The first published work to be devoted entirely to British mints' (Henrey). It is remarkable for its fine printing by Richard Cruttwell, and the quality of its engravings by William Hibbert, both of Bath, indicating the texture and shading of the mint plants. The original drawings from life were by James Hewlett, then of Bath, and others (see Henrey for further details). In his preface, the author critically surveys the work of earlier artists who had depicted mints, rating some as 'in general rude and Gothick' or 'very indifferent.' William Sole (1741-1802) was born and educated in Cambridgeshire, but later moved to Bath, where he practised as an apothecary-surgeon and lived for the rest of his life: 'One cannot watch most of the British mints growing in a garden in Bath for more than 25 years without knowing them very intimately' (quoted in Henrey). He also compiled an unpublished flora of Bath and was rewarded by the Bath and West of England Society in 1799 for his study of British grasses and their agricultural uses. Following the publication of the Menthae Britannicae a controversy ensued between Sole and James Edward Smith, President of the Linnean Society, who disagreed with Sole's nomenclature and classification.         MEMOIRS OF STEPHEN BURROUGHS. [with:] ...VOLUME II

Hanover, N.H.: Benjamin True, 1798, and Boston: Caleb Bingham, 1804.. Two volumes. [2],vi-vii,[8]-298; 202pp. Portrait on newsprint pasted to verso of second volume titlepage. First volume: Modern calf. Second volume: 12mo. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked in matching style. Some foxing and toning. A very good set. The Thomas W. Streeter-Frank S. Streeter copy, with their bookplates on the front pastedowns, and Thomas Streeter's pencil notes on the front pastedown of the second volume. A complete set of this memoir of a notorious swindler and con man, including the notoriously rare second volume. Burroughs (1765-1840) was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, the son of a Congregational minister, and quickly gained a reputation as a troublesome child. He ran away from home at age fourteen, joined the army only to desert shortly thereafter, and then enrolled at Dartmouth. He left college early, went to sea as a privateer, and impersonated a ship's physician. Back in New England he impersonated a minister in Pelham, Massachusetts, and was soon caught counterfeiting money. Burroughs was imprisoned in Northampton, where he tried several times to escape before setting fire to the jail, which resulted in his incarceration at Castle Island in Boston Harbor. He escaped from the island fortress, was recaptured, and served out his term, eventually moving to Canada, where he became the leader of a counterfeiting ring. Later in life he reformed, joined the Catholic church, and became a teacher to privileged youth. "One of the great criminal autobiographies, and an important piece of picaresque Americana" - Streeter. As the second volume was published some years later in a different city, and evidently in much smaller numbers, complete sets are virtually impossible to come by. Shaw & Shoemaker locate only three copies of the second volume. STREETER SALE 724 (this copy). SABIN 9466 (not noting 2nd volume). HOWES B1022, "aa." EVANS 33478. NAIP w020739. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 5957.         Plan of the Entrance of the Port of Bucarelli on the North West Coast of America

London: Robinson, 1798. Engraved map, 410 x 510 mm; with original central fold, fine. Rare alaskan map. Fine and very detailed chart of Bucareli Sound in Alaska, prepared for the publication of La Pérouse's voyage, here in the English version. The engraving acknowledges its derivation from the mapping by Maurelle and Quadra on the Spanish expeditions of 1775 and 1779. The sound was named for New Spain's Viceroy - for some time it was thought to offer an entrance to the Northwest passage, which is why it was included in the publication of La Pérouse's voyage. Bucarelli Sound is located about 50 miles west of Ketchikan. The chart shows many soundings around the harbor shoreline. Locates Golfo De Esquibel. Is. De St. Fernando, Is. St. Juan Baptista. Puerto de la Real Marina and shows points and bays, channels and many small islands.

Paris: Didot le jeune, Bozérian, & Lejeune, 1798. The very rare first sale of Bozérian’s books. Many of the books offered here were bound by Bozérian during his leisure time for his own library. Culot states that Bozérian was obliged to sell these books in order to raise funds to purchase a workshop. Bozérian (1762-1840), called the Elder to distinguish him from his younger brother François (active 1805-1820), was one of the foremost and innovative binders of his time who also successfully engaged in bookselling and publishing. Over the years, he sold books at auction four times: 1798, 1807, 1811 (in order to retire in comfort) and 1834. There was a fifth, posthumous, sale in 1846. 513 lots and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Fine copy. Without the 4-page schedule of sale at end. ?         Erotopaegnion sive Priapeia trastulli amorosi

      F. Patris 1798 - Misura cm 18 x cm 12, legatura muta d’attesa, esemplare marginoso stampato su carta forte a barbe. Suede or suede-like cloth, dual red and black spine labels, marbled endpapers, unpaginated, volumes I and III about 6 cm thick; volume II about 7.5 cm thick. Externally quite worn, with chipped spines (see image provided), joints cracked but covers attached (the front cover of volume II is barely attached), covers peeling, evidence of old worming to the covers and joints. Intermittent foxing, from light to moderate, some occasional offsetting. Volume I: One text page has a stitched repair, a few lower edge chips, final twelve leaves of text dampstained toward the outer edge, miscellaneous other chips and closed tears, none affecting plate images. Volume II: first few leaves detached, several pages have closed tears from the bottom edge, several pages and plates with inner margin dampstains near the top edge, several plates with closed tears starting from the bottom margin. Volume III: numerous edge chips and closed tears, a few dampstains to margins, last four leaves have dampstains at outer edge. A worn but quite decent copy overall, a venerable old set suitable for breaking although we would rather see it stay together, handsome despite the obvious signs of use. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
