A Speculation touching Electric Conduction and the Nature of Matter" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, 3, 1844, pp. 136-144.

      - FIRST EDITION of "the first account of Faraday's fundamental ideas on matter and, in particular, on the nature of the space between its constituent particles" Science in the Making, 1798-1850, p. 214). Here Faraday develops the hypothesis that atoms are not matter having a finite dimension, but instead are 'centers of foce' and that the force from each atom extends outward, filling all of space. "That such space exists is deduced from the fact that atoms 'though grouped and held together by their powers, do not touch each other, otherwise pressure or cold could not make a body contract into a smaller bulk'. He then poses the questions, 'if space be a conductor how then can shell-lac, sulphur etc. insulate? for space permeates them in every direction. Or if space be an insulator, how can a metal or other similar body conduct'. Faraday's answer to this problem is to remove the distinction between the nuclei of matter and the powers of forces surrounding them. He considers the disposition in space of these forces (not necessarily spherical, although emanating from a centre) and their extent (throughout 'all space to which gravitation extends, including the sun and its system'). As to the nuclei -- the centres of the forces -- he dismisses them as being inconsequential. Why, he asks, 'assume the existence of that of which we are ignorant, which we cannot conceive, and for which there is no philosophical necessity?'. To Faraday, therefore, matter was to be identified and its properties explained in terms of point centres surrounded by forces. Rather than being associated with the nucleus of the centre of force, Faraday regards it as permeating the whole region of influence of the force itself. Viewed in this way, his ideas could be interpreted as providing a foretaste of particle-wave duality as developed in the following century. This is most clearly seen by his explanation of the chemical interaction between atoms in which he uses the analogy of 'the conjunction of sea waves of different velocities into one, their perfect union for a time and (their) final separation into the constituent waves'" (ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). [viii], 552, [2], 4. Faraday paper: pp. 136-144. Ex-libris bearing only a small paper label at the spine and a discreet stamp on the title page. Bound in three quarter polished black calf over marbled paper boards. GIlt-ruled and lettered at the spine. Minor rubbing and scuffing; tightly and solidly bound. Slight age toning and foxing. Very good condition.

London: Printed for G.G. & J. Robinson and J. Edwards, 1798.. Four volumes including atlas volume of plates and maps. Quarto text volumes: [8],xxix,[8],432; [10],504; [10],505,[3]pp. plus eighteen plates. Folio atlas: Ten folding engraved charts, six engraved plates of coastal profiles. Text volumes: Contemporary mottled calf, gilt border, expertly rebacked to style with richly gilt spine, leather labels. Internally very clean. Atlas: Bound in matching style in quarter calf and marbled boards, spine richly gilt, leather labels. Maps and coastal profiles mounted on guards, some slight soiling on a few margins. A very good copy. A nice first edition of Vancouver, including the atlas: a cornerstone work on the exploration of the Pacific and the northwest coast of America. "This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge" (Hill). Vancouver was put in command of the expedition on the recommendation of his old commanding officer, Alan Gardner. He had served earlier with Admiral Rodney and on James Cook's second and third voyages, so was well equipped in terms of experience; in addition, he was a first-class navigator. The voyage was mounted as a "grand-scale expedition to reclaim Britain's rights, resulting from the Nootka Convention, at Nootka Sound, to thoroughly examine the coast south of 60º in order to find a possible passage to the Atlantic; and to learn what establishments had been founded by other powers. This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge. Vancouver sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he discovered King George's Sound and Cape Hood, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America. In three seasons' work Vancouver surveyed the coast of California; visited San Francisco and San Diego...and other Spanish settlements in Alta California; settled the necessary formalities with the Spanish at Nootka; investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca; discovered the Strait of Georgia; circumnavigated Vancouver Island; and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson Bay" (Hill). Vancouver must be considered, along with Cook, La Pérouse, and Malaspina, as one the greatest explorers of the late 18th century. "All four visited the northwest coast, but only Vancouver surveyed the enormous extent of the coast from Southern California to Cook Inlet...His meticulous survey literally put on the map of the world the intricacies of Puget Sound, Hood Canal, and the western coast of mainland Canada" - Tweney. COWAN (1914), p.236 ("superior to any of its kind, and constitutes the chiefest source of authority of that period"). COWAN (1933), pp.654-55.         Morning after the Storm. The husband's return. Le Matin devenu Calme. Le retour du mari

Published by William Redmore Bigg, London 1798 - A lovely genre picture after the celebrated artist William Redmore Bigg which demonstrates familial love. In this excellent colour mezzotint, William Ward's fine engraving conveys the charm of Bigg's painting, and illustrates a sensibility and concern for familial warmth that has, to a definite degree, since been lost. Bigg's early Romantic narratives anticipate the "good" people in Dickens' novels for whom familial affection and constancy are ultimate values, unattainable to those in whom personal greed and envy predominates. Bigg has selected his moment well, The fisherman's family has endured hours of imagining and not knowing his fate, listening to the storm rage outside. Now he is safely home and all is well. The family gathers happily but quietly around him, his wife and eldest son help him remove his sea-drenched top-coat. Another son kneels at his feet with a boot-jack. Two more children warm some dry clothes over the fire. The youngest daughter watches the baby whilst her father's needs are dealt with. With skill and beauty Bigg's expresses this happy release from anxiety. Colour printed mezzotint with additional hand-colouring. In good condition with the exception of some neat repairs to the plate mark.

Lisbon, Na Offic. de João Procopio Correa da Silva, 1798. - Woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. (4 ll.), 31 pp., engraved folding plate, large folding leaf with 2 tables on its recto and 1 on its verso. 8°, mid-twentieth-century half tobacco sheep over marbled boards, spine richly gilt with raised bands in five compartments, burgundy leather lettering pieces in second and fourth compartments (slight rubbing to lettering pieces and bands), vertical gilt fillet on on each cover at edges of leather near the boards, top edges rouged, red silk ribbon place marker, contemporary decorated wrappers bound in. Small to tiny worm trace in lower outer margin of most leaves, never affecting text. A good to very good copy. ---- First and Only Edition in Portuguese of this work on cloves cultivated on the "Islas de Bourbon" (Réunion), Cayenne in French Guiana, and the Molucas. In addition to translating the work into Portuguese, Fr. Velloso provides a six-page dedication to the Príncipe do Brasil, in which he refers to the vast domains of the Amazon in which the clove can be cultivated, increasing greatly the commerce of Portugal. He speaks of other Brazilian fruits, including "Cravo do Maranhão", "Pindaiba" or "Loureiro" (Laurel Tree), called "Pixori grosso e miudo" and its many varieties, including cinnamon from Ceylon, ginger, and various other fruits and spices. Bahia is cited as a place where, due to its warm climate, cultivation of such trees would be efficacious. He goes on to refer to the cultivation of these plants by the French in Mauritius, and to a work already translated and published cataloguing plants from these islands (present in the tables at the end of the work). He concludes by pointing out that he has translated the present work and others already published in hopes that they will inspire Brazilian farmers. The 3 tables are titled, respectively, "Catalogo das Arvores que existem nos Viveiros do Rei da França, para se repartirem pelos moradores das Ilhas de França, e Bourbon ?" which have been sent to the Islands of Cayenne, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and the Seychelles; "Catalogo Das Plantas do Horto público de S. José ? da cidade de Belem de Pará ?" by order of D. Francisco de Sousa Coutinho; and "Catalogo de algumas Plantas exoticas, que podem ir do Brasil."This work is part of the series begun at the instigation of D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho, Minister of State, and edited by Fr. José Mariano da Conceição Velloso (1742?-1811), which aimed at spreading information on new techniques in the arts, industry and agriculture in Portugal and Brazil, by means of translating and publishing recent foreign works on these subjects. Until 1800 the works were printed with government funding at private presses; after that, the short-lived press at Arco do Cego was established specifically to print such works, under the supervision of Velloso. A native of Minas Geraes, Velloso was a Franciscan and a noted botanist in his own right; his @Florae fluminenses, completed in 1790, was the most complete study of Brazilian vegetation. ---- Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 896; @Período colonial, p. 397. Sacramento Blake, V, 67 (without collation; calling for a plate). Innocêncio, V, 56 (calling for a map; no doubt referring to the tables). Gonçalves Rodrigues, @A tradução em Portugal 2144 (without mention of the plate or tables). @Arco do Cego 117 (illustrating the title page of one of the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal copies, and referring to "2 mapas desdobr." which are in fact the folding leaves containing the tables). Porbase locates two copies, both in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (the record gives a different collation, but the copy examined is the same as ours except that the plate has been colored, and the large folding leaf with the 3 tables has been divided into 2 folding leaves).         Essays and Criticisms, By Dr. Goldsmith; With An Account of the Author.

London: Printed for J. Johnson St. Paul's Church-Yard. 1798 - FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. 3 volumes. 12mo, 172 x 98 mms., pp. [ii], vi [vii - viii Contrntd], 232; xxx [xxxi xxxii Contents], 238; [vi], 276, including half-title in volumes 2 and 3, engraved portrait (by T. Holloway after Sir Joshua Reynolds) as frontispiece in volume 1, contemporary tree calf, gilt spine; lacks all labels, but a very good set with the later autograph of "John Gladstone/ Liverpool" on the title-pages of volumes 1 and 2. Volume 1 is a republication of Essays by Mr. Goldsmith first published in 1765; the second and third volumes, which were edited by Thomas Wright, with the assistance of Isaac Reed, constitute a new collection. Many of the essays here ascribed to Goldsmith are almost certainly not by him. However, the notice in The Critical Review for 1798 claimed "The first volume of these Essays was published by Goldsmith himself; the other are now first collected. The internal evidence is sufficient to prove their authenticity, and the account given in the preface satisfactorily establishes that point." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Voyage Round the World in the Years 1785[-]1788

London: J. Johnson, 1798. Three volumes, octavo, with 42 engraved plates and maps; a few instances of light foxing but a very good set in contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked; old bookplates, gift inscription to the Andover Institute Free Library dated 1873 at start of each volume and the library's stamp on p. 51 of each volume. First English edition. First English edition (it now seems) of the official account of the tragic French voyage. The disappearance of the entire La Pérouse expedition overshadows what was in reality a great Pacific voyage; the French navigator arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788, just hours after Governor Phillip had arrived with the First Fleet. La Pérouse's habit of forwarding records whenever opportunity offered ensured their survival. The first portion was forwarded by sea from Macao; the second (Macao to Kamchatka) went overland with De Lesseps, and the final despatches by courtesy of Governor Phillip from Botany Bay. After they left Botany Bay, the expedition disappeared - and no trace of them was found for forty years. Various versions and abridgments of the official account of La Pérouse's expedition came out in London in 1798 as English publishers scrambled to be the first into print. Forbes has demonstrated that the traditional idea that Stockdale's edition in two volumes was the earliest English version is probably wrong and that this Johnson edition was most likely the first of several to appear (see note to Hawaiian National Bibliography, 287).

        Portrait of La Pérouse

London: G. & J. Robinson, 1798. Engraving, 255 x 190 mm.; faint spotting, but very good. Attractive portrait of La Pérouse, "Commodore in the French Navy, born at Alby in 1741". Jean-Francois de Galoup, Compte de la Perouse was commissioned in 1785 by the King of France to head an expedition to explore the Pacific Ocean. He was under instructions to investigate whaling and fur prospects, as well as the possibility of establishing French territorial claims in Australia. La Perouse was the first French explorer to visit Hawaii. He sailed there twice, in 1786 and then again in 1788. Continuing onto Australia, he landed in Botany Bay just five days after the First Fleet arrived. He then headed for the Solomon Islands, en route his ship and it's crew were lost in a storm. In 1791, France sent out a search party to the Islands, but no sign could be found of him or his ship.

A Voyage Round the World , performed in the Years 1785, 1786, 1787 and 1788, by the Boussole and Astrolabe, under the command of J.F.G. de la Perouse

London: G.G. and J. Robinson, 1798-, 1799. Two volumes, quarto, with engraved frontispiece portrait, and a folio atlas with engraved title, and 69 maps and plates; generally a very good copy in a decent modern binding of half dark green morocco, gilt, and marbled boards. Best English edition. The best English edition of La Pérouse, the first to contain a full translation of the French original, and a handsome set with two substantial volumes of text and a folio atlas. Abridged translations had appeared in 1798, but this was the first publication of a complete translation of the French original, and the first English publication of the complete set of images of the expedition. Most of the engraved plates are by Heath, engraver of some of the plates for Cook's third voyage. The translator modestly announces: 'The book now laid before the world is one of the most magnificent in its conception, and recent in its execution'. This edition is rare on the market. The disappearance of the entire La Pérouse expedition overshadows what was in reality a great Pacific voyage. While primarily a voyage of exploration and discovery, the possibilities of the fur trade and of French expansion into the Pacific and Asia were evidently investigated in depth. The most significant results of the voyage are the charts of the imperfectly known Asiatic side of the Pacific. En route to Kamschatka, La Pérouse was the first to safely navigate and chart the Japan Sea and the strait between the island of Sakahlin and the northernmost island of Japan, which bears his name. At Kamschatka he received instructions to proceed to Australia to assess the extent of British plans in New South Wales. Travelling via Samoa where he discovered Savaii, Manono and Apolima islands in December 1787, and through the Tongan group, he arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788, just hours after Governor Phillip had arrived with the First Fleet. La Pérouse's habit of forwarding records whenever opportunity offered ensured their survival. The first portion was forwarded by sea from Macao; the second (Macao to Kamschatka) went overland with De Lesseps, and the final despatches from Botany Bay.

Ansicht von Worms Vue de Worms

Artaria & Comp, Vienna 1798 - A fine view of the city of Worms, a river-port on the Rhine, twelve miles north-north-west of Mannheim Hand-coloured aquatint etching by Ziegler after Janscha, with contemporary ruled and wash border. Accompanying the plate is a descriptive leaf of letterpess text, in French and German, with a contemporary manuscript English translation beneath `After passing the little island of Neusatz, the Rhine arrives at Worms? situated in the Lower Palatinate beyond the Rhine. The surrounding countryside produces much corn & rape seed also the excellent wine known as "Liebfraumilch"? The Church in the middle of the picture belongs to the Protestants who built it in 1725. The Catholics although they are few in number possess the Dome Church & four others. The Lutherans also have one. The residence of the bishop & the Town Hall are worthy of note it was in the latter that Luther appeared in 1521 at the Diet before the Emperor Charles 5th. It was at Worms that a treaty was concluded in 1743 between Marie Thérése & the kings of England & Sardinia'. This view comes from a work published in Vienna in 1798 entitled `Collection de cinquante vues du Rhin'. Janscha (1749-1812), born in Hungary, studied at the Vienna academy of arts, and later, in 1801, was appointed a professor of the same institution. The engraver Johann Ziegler (1750-1812) also studied at the Vienna academy and in addition to the present work he collaborated with Karl Schutz to produce a collection of 50 views of Vienna and its environs. "Idomeneo is remarkable for its orchestration... [It] is also notable for its continuity... [It] is also the first Mozart opera in which the arrangement of tonalities seems deliberately calculated...
