Unpublished Autographed Letter Signed as Governor

Trenton, NJ, 1798. unbound. 2 pages (front and back), 9 x 7.5 inches, Trenton, New Jersey, July 12, 1798. Written to U.S. Senators John Rutherford and (signer) Richard Stockton, at Philadelphia, concerning State appointments and news of a secret visit by George Washington, in part: "...I find the old General-in-Chief, the good Washington is going to make a tour to Boston; ask anybody, by any means, discover how he will arrive at Trenton, on his nay, if you will oblige me. Try old Tim Peck, McHenry or even the old and good President to find out - but if Major Dandridge is along with the General, present my compliment to him and beg him to acquaint you as far as is consistent with orders...I have a letter from Dr. William Cozens requesting me to recommend him as Adjutant. I know the man to be humble, active, and I believe brave, but his family were the last war the other way. As to his sentiments, I believe they are Federal to the backbone. He is sober and remember, he was a boy when the Revolution began. Shall we judge him by the sins of the father? I answered the address of [Robert] Morris at the Township of Caldwell, taking it by paragraphs..." Light show-through but very easy to read; chipping at bottom margin affecting four words of text. Overall good condition. Revolutionary War patriot and life-long friend of General George Washington. At the age of 39, he was elected the 3rd Governor of New Jersey, serving from 1794 - 1801. In 1779 Howell resigned his commission in the Continental Army so that he could engage in intelligence work for General Washington. After the war he became an early member of the Society of Cincinnati. His Grand-daughter Varina Howell became Mrs. Jefferson Davis - the First Lady of the Confederacy.

Transactions of the Linnean Society. Volume IV

London: J. Davis, 1798. Quarto, 22 plates (four with beautiful hand-colouring, one folding), partially unopened; an excellent tall copy, in simple early blue boards, neat repairs to spine. James Edward Smith and Ferdinand Bauer. With an excellent essay and plate depicting the Southern Emu-wren, as well as an important essay illustrated with an engraving by Ferdinand Bauer on 20 new plants from Australia by James Edward Smith, author of the Botany of New Holland.Copies of the first series of the Transactions, published very occasionally between 1791 and 1875, are now quite difficult to find, and are of interest because several include good early notice of Australian natural history: this volume, published in 1798, includes an important essay by James Edward Smith, 'The Characters of Twenty New Genera of Plants', (pp. 213-223) with a fine folding plate depicting the Lambertia formosa drawn by Ferdinand Bauer and engraved by Mackenzie. The most attractive inclusion is certainly the essay by Thomas Davies (c. 1737-1812), a British soldier who saw long service in Canada but retired to England to pursue his natural history pursuits, becoming a member of the Linnean Society and publishing frequently in th Transactions, chiefly as regards the exotic birds he collected. It is interesting to note how many of the birds figured by Latham in his General Synopsis were drawn after specimens in the Davies collection. The essay here relates to a bird newly sent to England, published as 'Account of a New Species of Muscicapa, from New South Wales' (pp. 240-2), with an attractive unsigned plate showing a pair of the "Flycatchers". Davies notes that he had good field notes on the habits of the birds which were found near Sydney and Botany Bay from "Arthur Phillip, Colonel Nepean, and other Gentlemen, who resided some years in New South Wales." The bird was here described for the first time by George Shaw as the Muscicapa malachura, but has since been renamed the Southern Emu-wren or Stipiturus malachurus. These early volumes of the Transactions were a veritable who's-who of English natural historians of the late eighteenth century, and this one includes work by the botanist who sailed with Vancouver, Archibald Menzies, on mosses with accompanying plates (including two from New Zealand); a reminiscence by Aylmer Bourke Lambert, (patron of surgeon John White); as well as the zoologist George Shaw and many others.

A Christmas Box Containing the Following Bagatelles É set to music by Mr. Hook. [With:] Second Volume of Christmas Box. [With:] Hook's Original Christmas Box. Vol. III

London: Printed and sold at Bland & Wellers, 1798. First editions. Engraved decorative or allegorical titles, engraved piano and vocal scores throughout. 3 volumes bound in 1 vols. Folio (13 x 9 1/2 in.; 332 x 240 mm). Modern quarter cloth, printed title label on spine. Occasional tears and soiling in bottom margin, stab holes at inner margin. Early inscription (ÒMiss Burstein January 1801") on each title page. All three volumes of the "Christmas Box" of nursery rhymes set to music. This collection of children's favorites predates Sarah Catherine Martin's Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard (1805) and the popularity of nursery rhymes which resulted from that publication. Included here are such well-known rhymes as "Goosy Goosy Gander," "See Saw Margery Daw," "Little Jack Horner Sat in a Corner," "Hey Diddle Diddle The Cat and the Fiddle," "Hot Cross Buns" and many others. Hook (1746-1827) "was a prolific composer in many fields, with an astonishing facility for writing catchy melodies of all kinds" (New Grove 684) and, to judge from his portrait in the New Grove, looked very much like our Santa but without the beard.

Some foxing, mainly to plates. Boards with a bit of minor scuffing. Overall a very good set. Lavater (1741-1801) "was the last and most influential of the descriptive physiognomists, a class of pseudo-scientists who attempted to ascertain character on the basis of physical features...Von der Physiognomik [1772], an unillustrated twovolume book, was Lavater's first work on the subject; this was later expanded, with the help of Goethe, into the four-volume Physiognomische Fragmente (1775-1778), and further perfected in a French translation, Essais sur la physiognomie...supervised by Lavater himself. Lavater's physiognomy differed from those of his predecessors in that he paid special attention to the structure of the head, particularly the forehead-a form of psychological indexing that exerted some influence on the development of phrenology and brain localization theories in the early nineteenth century. Lavater's work also influenced artists of the period, both in the overall creation of portraits, and in the use of his physiognomical theories to construct individual faces in historical paintings" (Norman Library). Lavater's work on physiognomy was extremely popular, and, by 1810, sixteen German, twenty English, fifteen French, two American, two Russian, one Dutch, and one Italian version had appeared. Among the portraits included are those of Descartes, Locke, Milton, Newton, Vesalius, Voltaire, and George Washington. Garrison and Morton. Norman Library. Osler 3178.

Consequences of a Successfull French Invasion

London: J. Gillray, n.d., 1798. Etching; 320 x 360 mm., mounted. The House is adjourned to Botany Bay. The original version of this rare transportation engraving (with both the date and the publishing details scratched through in ink). A later version was issued with other Gillray prints in the 1850s.Stephens in his great catalogue of the British Museum's print collection shows that this is the first of a series of four political satires by Gillray after Dalrymple, and one of a pair depicting government (the other two have agricultural settings). Showing a mad scene in the House of Commons, this is sub-titled "No. 1 Plate 1st. We come to recover your long lost Liberties...". The second such print, more frequently seen, is set in the House of Lords and is sub-titled "No. 1 Plate 2d. We explain the Rights of Man to the Noblesse...".Although recorded and reproduced by Jonathan King in The Other Side of the Coin, we have not found this image listed in standard Australian catalogues though its non-Australian pair seems to be quite well held in institutions. This setting allows this print (only, of the four) to take a satirical look at the decision of the English parliament to create a penal settlement at Botany Bay, in contrast to the atmosphere of reform and concern with civil liberties in the newly created republic of France and in the American colonies. Gillray turns the tables on the politicians of the House of Commons responsible for the Botany Bay decision: French revolutionaries led by Napoleon storm the parliament gagging the Speaker and placing all the Members in chains and dressing them in the garb of convicts. All the symbols of House are destroyed: the mace is smashed, the statutes discarded on the floor, and above the Speaker's chair are the words, "The House is adjourned to Botany Bay - sine die"

Memoires d'Hyppolite Clairon, et reflexions sur la declamation theatrale; publies par elle-meme.

Paris, F. Buisson, "an VII de la Republique", (1798). Format: 8°.. [4], II, 360 S.. .

Zweyte verbesserte Auflage

Berlin, Carl August Nicolai, Sohn, Buchhändler in der heil. Geiststraße im goldenen Arm, 1798.. 24 S. Pappband d. Zt. Berlin-Bibliographie I, 812. Instructions for cutting out apparel for the poor. . . with 13 folding plates of clothing patterns.

      J. Walter, London 1798 - Instructions for cutting out apparel for the poor. . . With 13 Engraved Plates of Clothing Patterns Instructions for cutting out apparel for the poor; principally intended for the assistance of the patronesses of Sunday schools, and other charitable institutions. . . . 8vo. xii, 85 [7]pp. 13 folding engraved plates of clothing patterns. London: J. Walter, 1789 [imprint lined out, with ms. correction below: Sold at the Parliament Office / Old Palace Yard]. Gilt-ruled calf c. 1789, a little rubbed, rebacked, endpapers renewed. Title-leaf silked, some edges of plates a trifle soiled and frayed, insignificant foxing and dampstaining. Very good copy. First Edition. This very rare work on methods and costs of producing affordable clothing for poor children, addressed to "Patronesses of Sunday Schools," is one of the products of the Sunday school movement, which spread rapidly throughout Britain after the philanthropist Robert Raikes (1736-1811) established the first Sunday school in Gloucester in 1783. The book describes the charitable program established at Hertingfordbury in the county of Hertfordshire, involving the town's two Sunday schools and two day schools or "Schools of Industry." In order to encourage the poor to send their children to the Sunday schools, a small portion of the charitably supported Sunday School Fund was used to purchase the raw materials (cloth, yarn, ribbon, sewing and knitting needles, etc.) for various items of clothing; these were then transformed into finished goods by the female students at the School of Industry, and offered for sale to the families of Sunday school students at a reduced price. The system was supposed to provide clothing for Sunday school students at about half of what it would ordinarily cost, plus provide the girls at the School of Industry with the training necessary to become "good servants, and useful mothers to families of their own." Quantities, types and prices of a great number of materials and finished goods are given, plus instructions and actual patterns for making various types of clothing. Very rare in commerce: When we checked OCLC cited six copies in North American libraries (ICU, MH-BA, NBuG, ICN, CaOHM, DSI). Kress B.1634. Goldsmiths 13970. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

CHARTS AND PLATES TO LA PEROUSE'S VOYAGE

London: G.G. & J. Robinson, 1798.. Engraved titlepage and [2]pp. text, plus portrait and sixty-eight (of sixty-nine) plates and maps. Lacks the large folding map. Folio. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt, leather label, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Some minor foxing, else very good. The atlas volume to the first English edition of La Pérouse's A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD..., without the large folding map, as is usually the case. "La Pérouse's expedition was one of the most important scientific explorations ever undertaken to the Pacific and the west coast of North America....The charge to the expedition [which took place between 1785 and 1788] was to examine such parts of the region as had not been explored by Captain Cook; to seek for an interoceanic passage; to make scientific observations on the various countries, peoples, and products; to obtain reliable information about the fur trade and the extent of Spanish settlements in California; and to promote the inducements for French enterprise in that quarter....La Pérouse and his men did important geographical research....The voyage also included the first foreign scientific group ever to visit Alta California [two of the plates depict a bee-eater and a male and female partridge of California. There are also maps and plans of San Francisco, Monterey, and San Diego]....La Pérouse sent dispatches back to France from Kamchatka and Botany Bay. The two ships then set sail from Botany Bay, in 1788, and were never heard from again" - Hill. It was not until the 1820s that the wrecks of his ships were discovered on a reef in the Santa Cruz group. Among the most significant results of the voyage are the series of charts that were produced as a result of the expedition's surveys of Asiatic side of the Pacific; and the ethnographic details of "the peculiarities [La Pérouse]...observed in the natives of the northwest coast of North America" (Sabin). In addition, he was the first westerner to safely navigate and chart the Japan Sea and the strait between the island of Sakhalin and the northernmost island of Japan. En route for Australia in 1788, La Pérouse sailed via Samoa, where he discovered the islands of Apolima, Manono, and Savaii. The atlas provides a fascinating pictorial record of this important voyage. HILL 975. HOWES L93, "b." WAGNER NORTHWEST COAST 837-848, pp.199-201. ZAMORANO 80, 49. FERGUSON 288. TPL 596. COWAN, p.383.         Alphabet arabe, turk et persan, a l'usage de l'imprimerie orientale et francaise.

Alexandria, Imprimerie orientale et francaise, an VI [1798].. Small 4to. 16 pp. Modern brown half calf with red label to giltstamped spine, bound to style.. The first book ever printed in Egypt, unquestionably the rarest and most important of the early books printed in the Middle East, published in the very year when modern printing was introduced to the Arab world. Only in October 1798 did J. J. Marcel arrive in Cairo with his employees and types to organize the Imprimerie Orientale. "The expedition of Napoleon Bonaparte to Egypt from 1798 until 1801 was a prelude to modernity. It was to change permanently the traditional Arab world [...] The French brought Arabic typography to Egypt, where it was practised under the supervision [...] of Jean Joseph Marcel [...]. Only a few days after the French troops landed [...] they set up the Imprimerie Orientale et Francaise there. It was an extraordinarily important turning point. For, leaving aside the Hebrew printing presses in Egypt of the 16th to the 18th centuries, until this date announcements and news adressed to Arabs there, as well as in other parts of the Arab-Islamic world, had been spread only in hand-writing or orally, by criers, preachers or storytellers" (Glass/Roper). - Slightly spotty in places, but well preserved. No copy in auction records or in libraries within the Arab world. - Geiss, Imprimerie en Egypte, p. 146, no. 1. D. Glass/G.
