New practical grammar of the Spanish language in five parts

Philadelphia: Printed by T. & W. Bradford 8vo. vii, [1], 356 pp.. [1798] First American edition, revised for the American audience and a substantial work from the Bradford press. “Carefully re-printed from the second London, and => revised by a gentleman in this city [of Philadelphia]," this was apparently only the second Spanish grammar printed in the U.S., Giral del PinoÂ’s grammar of 1795 having been its sole predecessor. The text discusses pronunciation, conjugation, agreement, syntax, etc.; then proceeds with vocabulary; and ends with dialogues, fables, and samples of mercantile letters. Interest in learning Spanish increased in the U.S. in the 1790s as commerce with Mexico, Central America, Cuba, and even Spain became a practical matter after Spain opened some ports to foreign commerce. Searches of WorldCat and ESTC locate fewer than 10 U.S. institutions reporting ownership of this work. Needless to say, early school books suffered at the hands of children, one of the great enemies of books. PublisherÂ’s sheep; back cover damaged with loss of leather; text foxed and stained, with dampstaining. Far from a pristine copy but acceptable for such a scarce book.

A Journey from Bengal to England through the Northern Part of India, Kashmire, Afghanistan, and Persia, and into Russia, by the Caspian-Sea

London: R. Faulder,, 1798. 2 volumes quarto (267 × 207 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, black morocco label, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments, but somewhat flaked, single ruled panel enclosing a beaded gilt panel to the boards, edges sprinkled blue, marbled endpapers. Double folding strip map of "the Route of Mr. Forster from Loldong to Petersburg". Bound with both half-titles. Leather with considerable craquelure, some flaking, loss to spine, but surface now stable, corners through, front joint cracked but holding, light browning, some foxing to the map, but remains very good, and a reasonably appealing copy. First edition thus. The first volume was published in Calcutta in 1790, the year before Forster's death, the whole being published for the first time as here. Forster, (c.1752?-1791), was an officer of the HEIC on the Madras establishment, and between 1782 and 1784 undertook "a remarkable overland journey from Calcutta to Europe, travelling through Jammu to Kashmir, Kabul, Herat, Persia, across the Caspian Sea, and thence to Russia. This journey traced back, to a large extent, the route of Alexander in his pursuit of Bessus. It also took Forster through districts of considerable commercial and political interest to the British. Adopting various disguises on his route … he travelled in the company of local merchants. This clandestine mode of travel, through regions completely unfamiliar to contemporary Europeans, made it impossible for him to use any instruments to survey his route, although he was later described as an acute observer with a good knowledge of the languages of central Asia" (ODNB). In Russia he had "sailed up the Volga to Russia, and then proceeded to St. Petersburg" (Cross), his travels there occupying just under a hundred pages of volume II. On his return to England he was encouraged by Henry Dundas to to write a general study of the political state of India, and "in 1785 he published Sketches of the Mythology and Customs of the Hindoos, a work which attracted considerable attention" (ODNB). On his return to India he was employed by Cornwallis to negotiate the conclusion of defensive alliance against Tipu Sultan with Mudhoji Bhonsla and the Nizam Shah, reaching Nagpur in July 1788. He died there in 1790 as resident to the court of Raja Raghoji Bhonsla. The completion of the present work was attained "from papers found in his possession", and on publication quickly obtained a high reputation, being "valued by contemporaries for its contribution to the geographical knowledge of central Asia". It was swiftly translated into French by the prominent orientalist Louis-Mathieu Langlès, being published in 1802 as Voyage du Bengale à Pétersbourg.

Plantae rariores vivis coloribus depictae ... [Bound with:] Plantarum selectarum icones pictae editae

Leiden: Jacob Meerburgh, 1798. Two volumes in one, folio. (17 x 11 inches). [Plantae rariores]: [4], [22], 1pp. 55 hand-coloured etched plates by Meerburgh (first ten with plate numbers added in early manuscript hand [the remaining with printed plate numbers], two with Meerburgh's name added in manuscript to the plate). [Plantarum selectarum]: [4], [8]pp. 28 hand-colored etched plates. Uncut. Modern half calf over marbled paper covered boards, flat spine divided into seven compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt A pair of rare and beautiful works on butterflies and flowering plants, drawn and engraved by the curator of the Leiden Botanical Garden. Meerburgh, the curator of the Leiden Botanical Garden from 1774 until 1814, intended both works, which depict plants cultivated at the Leiden Botanical Garden, to be used for reference with accurately coloured plates that he etched himself. Each plate in the first work includes a butterfly or moth drawn from his own collection. Referring to the first work, Johnston writes: "This is a Latin version of the author's Afbeeldingen van zeldsaame gewassen of 1775-1780 with Linnaen binominals applied to both plants and butterflies displayed." This example would appear unique with proof examples of the first ten plates, before plate numbers, which have been added in contemporary manuscript. The second work, would be issued as a continuation of the first, and was published only in this edition. The works are notable for their depictions of plants and butterflies from America (Baltimora Recta, Saxifraga Stolonifera, Baltimora Alata, Papilio Polyxena and others) and Asia, and including at least one plant in the second work from New Zealand (Sophora Tetraptera). Also of note in the second work is an early western depiction of Agrostema Banksia (Lychnis coronata) from China. The two works are rare, especially the second work, and are rarely found together. Dunthorne 203 and 204; Great Flower Books (1990) p.119; Hunt 705 (Plantae Rariores); Johnston 592 and 643; Landwehr 126 and 127; Nissen BBI 1333 and 1334; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 5785 and 5786; Hagen, p. 528 (Plantae Rariores).

        Landschaft mit Angler

A Treatise on Leases and Terms for Years

      A. Strahan, London 1798 - Very scarce Bacon title. This is not part of Bacon's New Abridgement of the Law, which underwent many printings in the mid 18th and early 19th century, but the first and only edition of a totally separate publication (although the subject matter was indeed included in Bacon's Abridgement). The Advertisement at the front indicates that this book was published separately not out of the greed of the the proprietors (Bacon et al), but to pre-empt a piracy in progress - "Alarmed at such an attempt upon a work in which they were so deeply interested, they endeavoured by remonstrances to prevail with the parties to relinquish their design; but these proving ineffectual, no other means were left them of asserting their claims, then by making a separate Publication of the Tract themselves". Full calf, [iv], 251p., [i], p.245-352, rear endpaper absent. Externally quite worn, with covers detached, spine about gone. Text block firm with no loosened pages other than the first few, which are detached. Pages have almost no foxing other than the title page, no chips, tears, markings. Internally very clean.         Autograph Letter Signed

This Revolutionary War patriot acted on Washington's behalf to secure large lots of land in the District of Columbia area before the center of government was formally established there, then served as the first secretary of the navy (1798-1801). ALS, 1p, 7 3/4" X 10½", n.p., n.y. Addressed to JOHN TEMPLEMAN, a Georgetown merchant associated with Stoddert in various land enterprises. Very good. Mildly age toned, with binding traces down left edge (not affecting text). Interesting if cryptic details on some Georgetown real estate dealings in Stoddert's usual difficult script, reading in part: "Col Burrows has commenced 3 Houses on two lots, which Scot will not transfer, without a person to get two lots already divided to him in the sale square... these are No. 9 & 10. Pray then send an order to Forrest, to transfer to Scot, these two lots. As for the rest -- I believe the business is not to be settled without a Law suit -- a Law suit which will not end during the lives of the Parties who commence it." One Stoddert letter to Templeman in the federal archives concerns different investors interested in Georgetown real estate; though undated, it likely dates from late 1804 -- which time period is also likely for this letter, which is otherwise dated simply "Friday morning." Most unusual, most desirable.

Paris: Hôtel de Thou, 1780; Paris: Moutardier, 1798 - an VIII. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The History of Great Britain during the Reign of Queen Anne With a Dissertation concerning the Danger of the Protestant Succession; And an Appendix, containing Original Papers

London: Printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies..., 1798. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 4to, pp. iv, [vi] - xvii [xviii Errata], 674 [675 - 676 adverts], recently recased in quarter calf, morocco label, marbled boards; title-page soiled and creased, ex-library with handwritten library ownership on first page of text. The erratic pagination is a printing error. Thomas Somerville (1741 - 1830) began collecting materials for his historical works in 1782, and this volume was preceded by his History of Political Transactions and of Parties from the Restoration of King Charles II to the Death of King William III (1792). A native of Hawick, Roxburghshire, he received a honorary D. D. from St. Andrews in 1793 and was also elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was also the author of My Own Life and Times, first published in 1861, and an invaluable guide to intellectual and literary life in Edinburgh in the latter part of the 18th century. Despite the high quality of both the research and the writing, as well as favourable and encouraing comments and reviews, this volume, as well as its predecessor, sold badly. More recent scholarship, such as that by Richard B. Sher, has shown appreciation for Somerville's achievements.

        L'Aretin D'Augustin Carrache

[Paris] - A La Nouvelle Cythere 1798 - A French description of the series of erotic engraved plates, depicting pairs of lovers in different positions of intercourse. Missing the twenty engraved platesby Carrachi, and containing the text only. The plates depict couples and scenes from mythology, including Jupiter and Juno, Anthony and Cleopatra, and Ovid sand Corinne. I Modi (The Ways), also known as The Sixteen Pleasures or under the Latin title De omnibus Veneris Schematibus, is a famous erotic book of the Italian Renaissance in which a series of sexual positions were explicitly depicted in engravings. While the original edition was apparently completely destroyed by the Catholic Church, fragments of a later edition survived. The second edition was accompanied by sonnets written by Pietro Aretino, which described the sexual acts depicted. The original illustrations were probably copied by Agostino Caracci, whose version survives. Condition: In a calf binding with gilt dentelles. Externally, smart, though with some rubbing and marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the odd patch of foxing. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
