Dallas, Alexander James
Philadelphia and Lancaster: Hall and Sellers (and) Francis Bailey, 1797. See Comments. Four volumes, bound in leather. Volume 1 (1797): front and rear hinges broken, cords holding firm, five raised-bands, applied red leather title in 2nd compartment and small applied red leather name tag at base of spine (John H. Weiss) appears to have been added later. Volume 2 (1793): Similarly bound to Vol. 1, hinges intact, minor tear to leather at top of spine. Vol. 3 (1795): Similarly bound to Vols. 1+2, hinges intact, cord broken away at top of spine. Tear resulting in missing part of upper right title-page with loss of part of letter "s" in word "Laws" in title. This volume seems to be the amalgamation of several different publications, with several non-sequentially dated title-pages, but continuous pagination, as described in more detail by others. Volume 4 *may* be missing a title-page, as it is so labelled "Laws of Pennsylvania" and "4" on the spine, but the first title-page we come upon is for "Acts of The General Assembly..." dated 1796. Other section were printed in Lancater, PA by Francis Bailey, and it is his imprint that is on the missing title-page. It is similarly bound to the first three volumes, with broken front and rear hinges and cords holding fairly firmly on rear hinge front cover off. Evidence of old red tape along front hinge entire length, old cellophane tape piece holding part of spine label which has broken away from book. This volume, like 3, seems to be an aggregation of different publications with several title-pages. Signature of John Ross (possibly the Am … [Click Below for Full Description]

The American Universal Magazine GEORGE WASHINGTON'S SLAVES Benjamin Rush Thomas Paine June 1797 Philadelphia: Richard Lee, [1797]. Scarce first edition of this historical journal. Begins with a frontispiece of Dr. Benjamin Rush, one of the founding fathers of the United States and a noted physician. Rush was much involved with the Revolutionary War; he was active with the Sons of Liberty, attended the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence. Rush also opposed slavery which seems a potent theme in this journal as the highlight here are the pages given over to Edward Rushton's powerful letter to Washington about his ugly hypocrisy of fighting so valiantly for liberty and yet owning slaves, see below for the text. Also in these pages: Rousseau; Cherries; Paine's Agrarian Justice, Artificially Heating Eggs, & more. Toned, stained, foxed, a few small tears, disbound with last few pages loose. Quite a rarity. "Expostulatory Letter to George Washington, of Mount Vernon, in Virginia, on his continuing to be a proprietor of Slaves. by Edward Rushton. Oh! reflect that your rights are the rights of mankind That to all they were bounteously given, And that he who in chains would his fellow man bind Uplifts his proud arm against heaven. In July last the following letter was transmitted to the person to whom it is addressed, and a few weeks ago it was returned under cover, without a syllable in reply As children that are crammed with confectionary have no relish for plain and wholesome food; so men in power who are seldom addressed but in the sweet tones of adulat … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAGRANGE, Joseph Louis, Comte
2 p.l., viii, 277, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. half-calf & speckled boards (final ten leaves with pale & unimportant dampstaining, occasional minor browning), uncut. Paris: Imprimerie de la République, An V [1797]. First edition and a lovely copy. In this work, Lagrange "intended to show that power series expansions are sufficient to provide differential calculus with a solid foundation. Today mathematicians are partially returning to this conception in treating the formal calculus of series."-D.S.B., VII, p. 570. "The year 1797?saw the appearance of the famous work of Lagrange, Théorie des fonctions analytiques, ?This book developed with care and completeness the characteristic definition and method in terms of 'fonctions derives,' based upon Taylor's series, which Lagrange had proposed in 1772. In it the author gave not only an attempted proof of the incorrect theorem that every continuous function may be so expanded, but also the determination of the 'fonctions derives' (or derivatives) of the elementary functions, and numerous applications to geometry and mechanics?Lagrange's Théorie des fonctions was only one, but by far the most important, of many attempts made about this time to furnish the calculus with a basis which would logically modify or supplant those given in terms of limits and infinitesimals."-Cajori, The Concepts of the Calculus, pp. 261-63. LAGRANGE, JOSEPH LOUIS. - [FOUNDATION OF ANALYSIS]
Paris, De L'Imprimerie de la République, An V (1797). 4to. Uncut and partially unopened. Contemporary manuscript-binding. Provenance: With the exlibris of Stillman Drake - one of the most renown Galileo scholars. Some light brown spotting through out. Otherwise a very good copy. (4),VIII,276 pp. ¶ First edition, first printing. Several bibliographies mention that there are two issues of the first edition, with no priority established - one with 277 numbered pages and another with 276 numbered pages which compromises Vol. III of the ninth cahier of the 'Journal de l'Ecole Polytechnique' (see Norman 1258 for example). However, the second mentioned printing was first published in 1801 (See Prof. Craig G. Fraser's article in "Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 1640-1940", pp. 258-276).Lagrange is the great formulizer of his time. In his masterpiece 'Méchanique Analytique' from 1788 he freed Newtonian mechanics from synthetic and geometrical reasoning by reducing the theory of mechanics and the art of solving problems in that field to the mere solution of general formulas. In this work, the 'Théorie des fonctions analytiques', Lagrange attempted to give calculus an algebraic foundation and avoid the employment of infinitely small quantities. In this work Lagrange developed a systematic foundation of the calculus. Throughout the eighteenth century a critical attitude had developed both within mathematics and within general scientific culture. Bishop George Berkeley had already in 1734 in his work 'The Analyst' called attention to what he perceived as logical weaknesses in t … [Click Below for Full Description]

KANT, IMMANUEL. - [KANT'S PHILOSOPHY OF LAW]
Königsberg, 1797. 8vo. Contemporary half calf with Five raised bands and gilt lines to spine. Upper capital, bands, and corners worn, but overll well preserved, solid and tight. Internally very nice and clean. Ex libris to inside of front board and old owners' names to front free end-paper and title-page respectively. XII, 235, (1, -errata) pp. (being numbered as thus: XII, LII, (2) pp., pp. 56-235 + 1 p. of errata). ¶ The first edition of Kant's influential philosophy of law (or right), his "Rechtslehre", which appeared as the independent first part of his "Metaphysik der Sitten". Kant's "Rechtslehre" is explained as a system of the principles of law, in which Kant applies the foundational notions developed in, for instance - and most notably, his "Critique of Pure Reason".In this important work, Kant seeks the general and necessary principles of law/right, those that are given through the pure reason a priori, and he determines the degree to which these principles found the empirical praxis of law/right. After having determined the general principles, he discusses their application to private law as well as institutional law. The work thus continues to be of great importance to the philosophy of law.The present copy without the colophon on the second-last page (but with the errata), as explained by Warda (note 18) - there is no precedecy between copies with/without the colophon.Warda 171.

1797. Finely handcolored engraved frontis. map & two folding engraved plates (one with some foxing). [3]-15, 314 pp. 8vo, cont. polished half-cal & marbled boards, flat spine gilt, blue morocco lettering piece on spine. London: B. Macmillan for G. Nicol et al., 1797. Second and fullest edition; a preliminary version had been published as a 92-page quarto in 1794. The first of six contributions by Young to the extraordinary series of county agricultural surveys inaugurated by Sir John Sinclair, when he became the first president of the new Board of Agriculture in 1793. Young in fact had misgivings about the vast project, and complained privately of Sinclair's "incessant printing." In this work, Young found much to praise: the rich tenant farmers, the practice of hollow draining, the system of crop rotations, and the excellent roads. However, there is a long section near the end on the impoverished inhabitants of the county. A very fine copy, lacking the half-title and, as usual, the final leaf with directions to the binder. SOTZMANN, Daniel Friedrich and Christoph Daniel EBELING
Carl Ernst Bohn. Sotzmann's rare map of New Jersey Double-page engraved map, with contemporary hand-colour in outline. Published in the Ebeling-Sotzmann 'Atlas Von Nordamerika' designed to accompany Ebeling's (1741-1817) 7 volume 'Erdbeschreibung und Geschichte von Amerika, die vereinten Staaten Von Amerika'. The independence of the United States created a desire for information about the new republic in Europe as well as in America and Ebeling's grand atlas was "one of the most comprehensive, detailed, and sympathetic geographic descriptions of America" (Ristow). New Jersey is shown bounded by the Delaware river in the south and east, the boundary line settled by the Commissioners in 1769 with New York in the north, and the Hudson River and Atlantic Ocean in the east. Sotzmann (1754-1840) is known to have completed only 10 maps of an intended 18, including Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts in 1796; Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland & Delaware (on a single sheet) in 1797; Maine in 1798; and New York in 1799. Complete sets of all 10 maps are very rare, and only a handful of institutions hold them, including the LOC and Harvard. "This series, thus, is among the rarest of cartographic Americana for the closing decade of the 18th-century" (Ristow, page 176). Using as his sources contemporary maps by Carey, Blodget, Belknap, Howell, Carleton, De Witt, Griffith, and others, Sotzmann's maps are highly detailed with symbols for churches, roads, court houses, distilleries, iron works, mills, academies, county lines, and town lines. Edition-originale.com - [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First Edition. The sale catalogue of an important Belgian picture collection, fully priced in a contemporary hand. Herder, Johann Gottfried.
Riga, Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1793-1797. Wenige, unbedeutende Fleckchen. Bezugspapier von Band 9/10 berieben. Schönes, frisches Exemplar. Titel von Band 1 verso mit kl. Stempel der Fürstenbergischen Bibliothek Donaueschingen. [Hamilton, Alexander]: [Callender, James T.]
Philadelphia, 1797. viii,288pp. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt morocco label. Some chipping, rubbing, and edge wear, label worn. Contemporary ownership signature on titlepage, marginal chipping to bottom of titlepage, mild foxing. Good plus. Untrimmed. In a half morocco box. One of the critical works in the saga of Alexander Hamilton, this scurulious text contains the famous scandalmonger Callender's revelation of Hamilton's affair with Mrs. Reynolds, and the subsequent correspondence between Hamilton and Mr. Reynolds concerning blackmail money. "Chapters 5 and 6, charging him with financial dishonesty, forced Hamilton to issue his 'Reynolds pamphlet'" - Howes. While Hamilton was able to clear himself of alleged theft charges, the breaking of the Reynolds story was the effective end of his political career. The present text was later reprinted in Callender's HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES FOR 1796, to which Jefferson lent financial backing. Callender's unscrupulous behavior was halted in 1801, when, in a drunken stupor, he drowned in three feet of water in the James River. The volume is also important for the wealth of political and diplomatic news of the day. HOWES C69. EVANS 31905. SABIN 10062. REESE, FEDERAL HUNDRED 67 (ref).

MeLville Papers
"Suggestions Respecting the Means of Improving our Connexion with China on the Side of Napaul & Thibet" [Great Britain], 1797. Manuscript memorandum revealing a trade relations strategy for Great Britain to increase access in China, written by an unidentified British colonial administrator or politician who was abreast with the political climate and the leaders in China, Nepal and Tibet. Folio. 16 pages in manuscript, written recto and verso with wide half-page margins, on five double leafs laid watermarked paper made by Whig politician and leading papermaker Clement Taylor in 1796, measuring approximately 20 x 31 cm, and string-tied to upper left margin with a green ribbon. Docketed to verso. Very slight occasional age-toning, otherwise in very good condition, clean and bright, a stellar primary source document. Provenance: From the Melville Papers. Written shortly after the return of Lord Macartney's Embassy to China, most likely by an influential administrator of the East India Company which had a monopoly on East Indies trade including Canton in China, the present memorandum is a proposal for a mission with the same objective of securing increased trade with China - this time by means of a somewhat obliquitous political connection through Nepal and Tibet. The East India Company was both ambitious and persistent with its aim of expanding commerce with the Far East, sparing no expense in sending great missions such as Lord Macartney's, and also chancing more intimate, lesser known missions aimed at reconnaissance or relationship building. This manuscript sets forth a new … [Click Below for Full Description]

(TARAYRE Jean-Joseph) BLARY (?)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Théorie des fonctions analytiques, contenant les principes du calcul différentiel. . . . 4to. [4], viii, 276pp. Paris: Imprimérie de la République, An V [1797/98]. 271 x 215 mm. (uncut and partly unopened). Original limp boards, title in ink on spine, minor soiling at foot of spine. Light toning, otherwise a very fine, crisp copy. First Edition, second issue. Lagrange was born in Turin of mixed Italian and French descent, and spent the first 30 years of his life in his native city. He began devoting himself exclusively to mathematics when he was 17; within a year he had published his first mathematical paper and begun a fruitful correspondence with Leonhard Euler, who at the time was working in Berlin as Director of Mathematics at the Berlin Academy. While in Turin Lagrange founded the Turin Academy of Sciences and published a number of papers in its journal; his mathematical work during this time helped to establish the calculus of variations. In 1766, upon Euler's return to St. Petersburg, Lagrange agreed to take over Euler's position at the Berlin Academy. He spent the next twenty years in Berlin where he made a number of fundamental contributions to algebra, number theory and celestial mechanics; during this time he also wrote his landmark Mécanique analytique (1788), which "transformed mechanics into a branch of mathematical analysis" (O'Connor and Robertson). In 1787 Lagrange moved to Paris where he became a member of the French Academy of Sciences; i … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEGENDRE, Adrien Marie.
Paris: Duprat, 1797-1798. First edition. A fine copy of the first book entirely dedicated to number theory. The work contains Legendre's discovery of the law of quadratic reciprocity, which Gauss referred to as the ‘golden theorem' and for which he published six proofs in his <i>Disquisitiones arithmeticae</i> (1801). ❧Norman 1325; Parkinson <i>Breakthroughs</i> 231. <br/><br/> “The theory of numbers in the eighteenth century remained a series of disconnected results. The most important works in the subject were Euler's <i>Anleitung zur Algebra</i> (1770) and Legendre's <i>Essai sur la thorie des nombres</i> (1798).” (Kline). “Legendre was one of the most prominent mathematicians of Europe in the 19th Century… His texts were very influential. In 1798 he published his <i>Theory of Numbers</i>, the first book devoted exclusively to number theory. It underwent several editions, but was soon to be superseded by Gauss' <i>Disquisitiones arithmeticae</i><br/><br/> “Many of Legendre's results were found independently by Gauss, and serious priority disputes arose between them. Legendre's proofs, moreover, left much to be desired, even by mid-18th-century standards. For example, he discovered the law of quadratic reciprocity, unaware of Euler's prior discovery, and gave a proof based on what he viewed as a self-evident fact, namely the existence of infinitely many primes in any arithmetic progression <i>an + b (n = 1, 2, 3, …</i>, with <i>a</i> and <i>b</i> relatively prime). This was a very difficult result, proved subsequently by Dirichlet using deep methods of analysis. Le … [Click Below for Full Description]

MASCHERONI, Lorenzo.
Pavia: Heirs of Pietro Galeazzi, 1797. First edition of Mascheroni's most important book, in which he proves that any geometrical construction that can be performed using ruler and compasses can be carried out by means of compasses alone. The history of the problem goes back at least as far as Euclid, the restriction to ruler and compass occurring in Book I of the Elements. The problem of carrying out constructions under additional restrictions was considered by da Vinci, Dürer, Cardano and Tartaglia, among others. "In the preface Mascheroni recounts the genesis of his work. He was moved initially by a desire to make a contribution to elementary geometry. It occurred to him that ruler and compass could perhaps be separated, as water can into two gases; but he was assailed by doubts and fears often attendant upon research. He then chanced to reread an article on the way Graham and Bird [who supplied instruments to Maupertuis] had divided their great astronomical quadrant, and he realised that the division had been made by compass alone, although, to be sure, by trial and error. This encouraged him and he continued his work with two purposes in mind: to give a theoretical solution to the problem of constructions with compasses alone and to offer practical constructions that might be of help in making precision instruments. The second concern is shown in the brief solutions of many specific problems and in a chapter on approximate solutions. "The theoretical solution (see especially §191) depends on the solution of the following problems: (1) to bisect a given circular arc of … [Click Below for Full Description]
