REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE OF CLAIMS, ON THE PETITION OF THE WIDOW OF THE LATE SCOLACUTTAW, OR HANGING MAW, ONE OF THE CHIEFS OF THE CHEROKEE NATION OF INDIANS [caption title]

[Philadelphia], 1797. on a single folded sheet. Light foxing. Very good. Samuel Sitgreaves' copy, with his distinctive signature at the top of the first page. Sitgreaves was a Federalist party House representative from Pennsylvania from 1795 to 1798. Here, the widow of a Cherokee chief petitions the U. S. House of Representatives for financial relief after her husband and "a number of well disposed Indians" were killed by "John Beard, and a number of armed men" in an attack on the Tennessee frontier in 1793. While agreeing that Hanging Maw had been "uniformly friendly" to white settlers, and that he had been murdered, the House denies the claim, instead recommending to the widow that she take up her case with the Indian Department. A rare imprint, as OCLC locates just eight copies. EVANS 32999. OCLC 12431691.

Statuta Ecclesiae Mexicanae necnon Ordo in choro servandus curante Vallisoletanae Ecclesiae capitulo sumptus suppeditante.

Mexici: Apud Marianum Zunnigam, et Ontiverium Folio (27.5 cm; 11"). [1], 140 pp., [2] ff.. 1797 Fray Antonio de San Miguel, the bishop of Michoacan, reprints the statutes promulgated by the Third Mexican Provincial Council (1585) and the "Ordo servandus in choro" of Archbishop Alonso de Montúfar (fl. 1512–70). The archbishop originally established these 42 rules on proper organization and deportment for the choir of the Cathedral of Mexico City. The bishop of Michoacan undoubtedly wished to bring some of this order to his own bishopric and cathedral. Uncommon: WorldCat and NUC Pre-1956 locate only four copies in the U.S. Contemporary vellum over paste boards of printer's waste, vellum cockled and that of the front cover lightly rodent-gnawed at board edges. Worming in text, some of which is meander type, costing letters. Not a great copy, but given the scarcity, an acceptable one.

THE VIRTUOSO'S COMPANION AND COIN COLLECTORS GUIDE

London: Publish';d for the Proprietor by M. Denton, No 139 St. Johns St West Smithfield, 1797. Eight volumes, complete, bound in two. 12mo, handsomely bound in matching early dark brown calf; spines with five raised bands; crimson and black spine labels diminutively lettered in gilt; remaining four spine compartments richly decorated in a floral motif; sides paneled in gilt and in blind; board edges hatched in gilt; decorative blind inner dentelles; fine-combed marbled English endpapers. Finely engraved frontispiece of "History protecting Medals from the Ravages of Time" by T. Prattent, dated 1796; 8 original engraved titles, all dated 1797, each sequentially numbered in ink; single leaf Preface; 4 page Observations on Coins by James Wright; 15, (1) page Index; 8 page Index, to the Continuation; concluding 7, (1) page Index; 240 original engraved plates; each of which depicts both sides of four tokens. Minimal rubbing to binding extremities and occasional light foxing / discoloration; a few margins neatly strengthened. A charming, extremely attractive set. Overall, this is perhaps the finest set we have ever encountered of this classic series of plates, the only comprehensive early work depicting eighteenth-century English tokens. Issued serially over three years, complete sets are today decidedly rare. The preface proposed to issue "fac-similes of four hundred and eighty different Coins, in four Volumes twelves, with an elegant frontispiece, at the price of twenty shillings." After the four volumes had appeared such a wealth of tokens remained un-illustrated that it was decided to extend the series to eight volumes. Initiated by Denton, the last two parts were published by Prattent. The work appeared at ten- to fourteen-day intervals, price sixpence: three plates depicting twelve tokens comprising a number. Given the method of distribution, the change in publisher (many sets are comprised of only the first 180 plates), and the proclivity of early collectors to cut up plates to illustrate other books, it is not surprising that few complete sets have survived, especially with the various indexes and other textual enhancements. A blank leaf preceding the pertinent title in each volume is inscribed in ink: "Homer R. Stephens, Fernbrook Park, Ossining, N.Y., 1937." Included are a number of neat, light pencil notations on the plates, probably accomplished by an earlier collector and mainly describing edge varieties in the scribe's collection.

The History of Pennsylvania, In North America

Zachariah Poulson Junior,, Philadelphia: 1797 - Both volumes of this two volume set are in near fine condition in contemporary, full calf covered boards with red and black, gilt decorated labels on the spines. Both are octavos measuring 8 3/8" by 5" with very light wear and rubbing to the leather joints and to the tips of the boards to volume I. The same wear to the leather of volume II is present, but the upper 2" of the front joint is beginning to part. The hinges, joints and binding are otherwise tight and strong. The frontispiece portrait of William Penn is present, but the fold-out map frontispiece in volume II is missing. Volume I contains 508 pages of text and the errata. Volume II contains 373 pages of text followed by 132 pages of appendices and a 14 page index and the errata for volume II. Of particular interest is the fact that a gift inscription is present on the first (in Vol II) and second (Vol. I) free end pages of both volumes. These inscriptions read: "Peter Barker | to his valued | antient friend | Sarah Barney of | Nantucket " and dated "Philadelphia 11 mo. 22 1803" Beneath this date is another prior owner's name "James Barker". This Sarah Barney was quite likely the same Sarah Barney (1725-1808) of the Society of Friends who was well known as she was instrumental in promoting Quaker women's rights. Considered by Howes to be "quite scarce". (Howes, P-639; Sabin, 66223; Evans, 34421) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dam Amsterdam - vismarkt, Thomas Rowlandson.

He sailed north into the Pacific and was never seen again. Some 40 years later Peter Dillon discovered the wreckage of his ships off Vanikoro. From the library of the Grafen von Ludolf. "One of the few historians of the early nineteenth century to attempt a Kulturgeschichte of the Renaissance period was that strangely erudite Liverpool attorney, William Roscoe. His work deserves mention in any history of Renaissance historiography, not only for the immense stimulus it gave to Italian studies, but also for the direction it gave to many later interpretations. Roscoe conceived the whole cultural revival of the Renaissance in Italy as centering about the Medici family, as indeed largely the product of that family's intelligent direction and liberal patronage" (Ferguson, The Renaissance in Historical Thought, p. 164).         View of Hereford

London: Published by F. Jukes, 1797. Hand-coloured aquatint on wove paper. Very good condition apart from several light water stains in the right and left margins. A fine view of the ancient market town of Hereford, near the Welsh border, from "Series of Views on the River Wye" by Francis Jukes, one of the greatest English exponents of the art of aquatint, after a work by the landscape painter Edward Dayes. Francis Jukes was a prolific engraver, who was chiefly known for his topographical prints, the bulk of which he executed in aquatint. He contributed numerous plates to various publications including Walmsley's Views in North Wales (1792-4) and Campbell's A Journey in Scotland (1802) and collaborated on several projects with the engraver and publisher Robert Pollard. The title is actually "This distant View of Hereford...", and it indicates a different mind-set from ours by which we tend to believe a town consists of its buildings and a few prominent geographical features. In this view, only the cathedral, a couple of steeples and a few outlying houses are distantly visible. Hereford, in this rendition, is the vast space, the stormy sky and rolling fields, even the couple that walk the dusty road, the woman with a suitcase on her head, all taken together. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography ; cf. Abbey, Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland 545.

Antient Metaphysics: Or, the Science of Universals. With an Appendix, Containing an Examination of the Principles of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy. Edinburgh (J. Balfour, Bell & Bradfute) and London, (T. Cadell, W. Davies), 1779, 1782, 1784, 1795, 1797, 1799.

      - First edition of one of the strangest and most intriguing products of the Scottish Enlightenment. Monboddo's epic work, published over a twenty-year period and very seldom found complete in all six volumes. 'Why ought one read it? First, the very massiveness of Antient Metaphysics allowed Monboddo to range over countless points of interest, from the origins of human society and culture, to accounts of wild children, to arguments against Hume’s racism to erudite defences of Mind against Priestleyan materialism and Lockean and Humean empiricism. It also allowed him to interrelate many points from many different perspectives and show how they form a complex system, one of the main goals of his holistic philosophy (Vol. VI, 329–30). Antient Metaphysics is also a work that is indicative of a number of strains in British philosophy, despite the pleasure which Monboddo clearly took in writing against the grain. Monboddo can be viewed as a reactionary Rousseauian in distinction from the conservative Rousseauianism found in the works of John Gregory and Lord Kames. Although Monboddo rarely mentioned Rousseau, his fascination with orangutans as the original men, and his general pessimism about the decline of man from his initial state, have a Rousseauian imprint. But, of course, there are drastic divergences from Rousseau, which signal a second set of influences. Monboddo emphasized that man’s ideal condition was not as a happy orangutan, but rather a state combining Athenian wisdom (not Spartan discipline) and Egyptian politics, drawing on Neoplatonic intellectualism and monarchy in a way entirely foreign to Rousseau. Monboddo’s variety of Neoplatonism, which he called ‘Antient Theism’, had affinities with the philosophy of Cudworth, an author whom he greatly admired Vol. I, ‘Preface’, iii) and more broadly to Cambridge Platonism (although Monboddo probably concocted much on his own). It also had great affinities with Shaftesbury and Shaftesbury’s nephew James Harris (who was Monboddo’s friend and mentor). Monboddo opposed his ‘Antient Theism’ to ‘modern theism’, which he associated in the first volume of Antient Metaphysics with the philosophies of Descartes and Newton. Descartes gradually fell away, to be replaced by Priestley in the second volume of Antient Metaphysics, but Newton was an obsession of Monboddo’s, from the work’s opening pages to its concluding paragraphs, through many books, chapters, and appendices' (Aaron Garrett, 'Introduction' to the Thoemmes Press facsimile reprint, 2003). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 6 volumes, 4to, xxi, [i], ix, ix, [1],555 (E1 and E4 bound out of sequence, 548 misnumbered 558); [xx], [iii]-xii, 461; [xv], iii, lxxx, 378; [xxx], v, [i], 408; [xxix], [i], 323; [xix] , 351,[1] pp., contemporary calf, rebacked, a few scrapes on the covers and wear at corners, old Glasgow University Library bookplates, occasional spotting, no stamps or inscriptions, a very good set.         LIBERTÉ. EGALITÉ. RÉPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE, UNE & INDIVISIBLE. PROCLAMATION. ANNE-JOSEPH-HYPPOLITE MALARTIC...[caption title]

Port Nord-Ouest: Chez F.N. Bolle, 1797. single folded sheet. Contemporary manuscript notation at head of first page. Top corner torn away slightly, small dampstain at foredge. Very good. An early imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text deals with the defense of the island, presumably against potential English invasion. The British did contemplate an invasion in 1797, but concluded it would be too difficult and abandoned the idea. Much of the text is devoted to citing the French defense of Quebec in the French and Indian War as a heroic example, making this a most unusual piece of Canadiana. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base. The British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period, until 1810, only about 400 imprints were produced, mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers, though there are also almanacs and a few other items. All are quite rare. No copies located in OCLC; Toussaint locates copies at the Mauritius Archives, Archives Nationales in Paris, and the British Library. TOUSSAINT A270.

[MANUSCRIPT DETAILING THE SALE OF LAND FROM ROBERT MORRIS TO THE BANK OF NORTH AMERICA]

[Philadelphia], 1797. Folio, stitched as issued. Toned, minor wear to extremities. Very good. Manuscript outlining Robert Morris' contract with the Bank of North America regarding 58 large parcels of land in central and western Pennsylvania. In an act of desperation Morris signed over his investment, attempting to appease his growing legion of creditors. Morris, with his two partners, James Greenleaf and John Nicholson, formed the North American Land Company in 1795. The company acquired nearly six million acres of land which was put into a trust, with stock being issued at $100 per share, and each share representing two hundred acres of real estate. When the market for real estate investment collapsed due to the Napoleonic Wars and the Panic of 1797, Morris was besieged with creditors. Though Morris made several attempts, such as this sale, to raise funds he was eventually sent to debtor's prison where he remained for three and a half years. The official document bears the original wax and seals of the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia.

A DEFENCE OF THE CONSTITUTIONS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AGAINST THE ATTACK OF M. TURGOT IN HIS LETTER TO DR. PRICE, DATED THE TWENTY-SECOND DAY OF MARCH, 1778

Philadelphia, 1797. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards, spines gilt with leather labels. Contemporary ownership signature of John Lorimer Graham on titlepages, light foxing. Very good. Styled the "third edition." The first volume was first published in London in 1787. The second and third volumes, issued later than the first, contain descriptions of the Italian republics of the Middle Ages as well as a lengthy analysis of "the Right Constitution of a Commonwealth." This work is one of the most important and widely read of the many writings of the important Revolutionary figure and second president of the United States. At the time Adams wrote this work he was serving as the first United States ambassador in England, an uncomfortable position for a recent rebel, but he was ever ready to argue the American point of view. Here he forcibly states the principles on which he perceived the United States to be founded. The book was popular and went through numerous editions. Its issuance as the Federal Constitutional Convention was assembling added to its popularity and resulted in several American reprintings, and according to the DAB, "its timeliness gave it vogue." Later, Adams' detractors sought to find in it a hidden desire for a monarchy. This copy belonged to John Lorimer Graham, a distinguished New York City attorney, and at times Postmaster of the city, who had signed and dated the titlepages of each volume. Graham acquired the volumes when he was a legal student, in 1817. He also wrote out at some later point an appreciative appraisal of the work, bound in the front of the first volume. HOWES A60, "aa."       Jena, Maucke, 1797. I) fast vollständig neu ab.

Fuchs, an V.-1797, in 8°, de 4ff.-164pp., cart. papier marbré moderne genre ancien, qq. lég. mouillures claires.

AN AUTHENTIC ACCOUNT OF AN EMBASSY FROM THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN TO THE EMPEROR

London 1797, Stockdale. Full new calf, spine gilt, 1 volume. edition, 33 copper engravings, 13 x 21.5 cm., abridged from. the Papers of Earl Macartney, contents clean, text only, no. atlas.. THE OFFICIAL RECORD: The official account of Earl McCartney's informative but unsuccessful mission to establish formal diplomatic and commercial relations with China. Staunton accompanied the Embassy as Secretary & compiled his book chiefly from the papers of the Ambassador & his fellow envoys. A fascinating true history of the expedition, useful primary source. * IMPORTANT NOTE ! Only the FIRST EDITION of this work contains the atlas folio. Other different or later editions are as described. Beautiful views of Cochin-China, Macao, Yang-Tzw river life, many other views of China. Highly collectable title, documenting the first English Embassy to China. A most handsome addition to any great collection. This work is seldom found in its complete state, with the atlas of maps & superb copper engraved plates, with nice frontis engravings in volumes 1 & 2 of McCartney and Tchien Lung, the Great Emperor of China. * THE ATLAS OR FOLIO: Not issued until 1798: The atlas was copper etched, it contains a folded general chart of the track followed by the two ships around the world, along with 43 other fine charts, maps, plans and marvelous illustrations, with superb views recorded for posterity. * THE PLATES: The lively and large plates illustrate coastal views, birds of an unusual character, natives and other images of significance. Expertly drawn and engraved. * By and large, the best single English language item done on China in the 18th century ! George Staunton [1737-1801] was a British diplomat, in 1774 Dr. Samuel Johnson met Staunton and they became life-long friends. Although the official mission to China failed, a wealth of precious information was collected and published in this first comprehensive official account. During this period of time, Great Britain was anxious to establish formal diplomatic relations with China and open usual trade relations. The unwilling Chinese resisted all Western foreign intervention in China. In the end the gifts and arguments were rejected. * THE FOLIO: The folio [when present] contains [102p.], 5 large folding maps, 50 finely engraved plates, large format, ca. 58 x 43 cm., fresh, clean copy, no foxing. * **** BIBLIOGRAPHY: E. Cox: A REFERENCE GULIDE TO THE LITERATURE OF TRAVEL, P.334-345. * Lust 545. * H. H. Cordier: SINICA 2381-82. * Hill: Pacific Voyages, p280-281, 1628, p.250. * Maggs: Catalog no. 521:"Apart from its Chinese importance, is of considerable interest owing to the various places visited en route, including Madeira, Teneriff, Rio de Janero, St. Helena, Tristan D'Acuna, Amsterdam Island, Java, Sumatra, Cochin-China, etc." * Cox I, p.334: "A most interesting account of Chinese manners & customs at the close of the 18th century." * Color scans can be sent by email.         Die Metaphysik der Sitten. Abgefaßt von Immanuel Kant. Erster Theil. Metaphysische Anfangsgründe der Rechtslehre (- Zweyter Theil. Metaphysische Anfangsgründe der Tugendlehre.).

bey Friedrich Nicolovius, Königsberg 1797 - In zwei Bänden. Gr-8°. XII, LII, (53 -) 235, (1) S.; X, 190 S., (1) Bl. Marmorierte Pappbände d.Zt. mit Rückenschild, Linienvergoldung an Rücken und Deckeln. Berieben und teils etwas beschabt, Ecken und Kapitale etwas betoßen. Erste Ausgabe (Warda 171 und 176). – Vereinzelt leicht stockfleckig. Ohne die Einzeltitel gebunden. Zeitgenöss. Besitzeintrag a.d. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
