The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent, Containing the Antient and Present State of It, Civil and Ecclesiastical; Collected From Public Records, and Other Authorities: Illustrated with Maps, Views, Antiquities, &c. The Second Edition, Improved, Corrected, and Continued to the Present Time. [ Twelve Volume Set, Complete: Volumes I - XII, 1797 - 1801 Edition ]

      W. Bristow, on the Parade, Cantebury 1797 - A very good copy of the complete twelve-volume, stated second ("improved, corrected .") edition (first issue: with initial publication in 1797 or, as printed on the title page: MDCCXCVII). As noted, bindings are three quarter (green) leather with marbled boards and marbled endpapers, with five raised bands and gilt devices and gilt lettering to the spines. The text of each volume is wholly unmarked, pristine. Some minor shelf-wear to the base of the volumes, but the bindings are remarkably strong and solid, with no splitting of the gutters and thus no wobbling to any of the boards. Some incipient splitting of portions of the leather at the spine seams of volumes IX, XI and XII, else minor wear and rubbing/abrasions of the leather at the crowns of the spines of about five of the volumes: unobtrusive, but noticeable. Volumes are uniform in binding characteristics, with dates of publication as follows: Volumes I, II, II: 1797 (MDCCXCVII);Volumes IV, V, and VI: 1798 (MDCCXCVIII); Volumes VII and VIII: 1799 (MDCCXCIX); Volumes IX, X, and XI: 1800 (MDCCC); and Volume XII: 1801 (MDCCCI). All in all an astonishingly well-preserved copy of the complete second edition. [Please note: Due to the size and weight of the volumes extra shipping may be required depending on the destination and speed of delivery requested. International buyers may especially wish to inquire prior to ordering. Quotations gladly provided.] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Moravian missionary and Indian agent John Heckwelder reports on the news of a Lenape chief who allied himself with the United States during the Revolutionary War

Baltimore, December 9, 1797. 6.5" x 8". "Letter Twice Signed, ""John Heckewelder,"" 1 page, 6.5"" x 8"", Baltimore, December 9, 1797, addressed in his hand on the integral transmittal leaf to ""William Holmes (an Indian) Philadelphia."" Expected folds, light soiling, else very good.Heckwelder writes in full: ""Inclosed is my Certificate [not present] of the Death of the late Indian Chieff [sic] called (the Big Cat) The Papers you left in pledge with Mr. Van Veach, together with your Note of Doll[ars] 20 which was to be paid before the Papers should be delivered up; are sent to a Gentleman of our Society & from Nazareth) now in Philadelphia (a Mr. Jacob Eyerly) Member of Assembly who has taken Lodgings at Mr Leshers Tavern in Second Street near the Corner of Race Street, where you may receive them on paying the above Sum, as Mentioned in the Note.""John Heckwelder (1743-1823) was born in Bedford, England, emigrating to Pennsylvania in 1754. He apprenticed as a cooper, but following a visit to Ohio with a colonial Indian agent, he began working for several Moravian missions in Pennsylvania in 1762. In 1771 Heckwelder became a full-time evangelist to the Indians, working as an assistant to Moravian missionary David Zeizberger (1721-1808) for fifteen years. His extensive knowledge of Native America affairs brought him to the notice of the newly-formed federal government in 1792 when he accompanied General Rufus Putnam to treat with the Indians at Vincennes. The following year the War Department commissioned him to treat with tribes on the Great Lakes, and from 1797 to 1800 he lived in Ohio, working as a postmaster and justice of the peace. In 1810 he retired and spent his later years in literary pursuits, becoming a member of both the American Philosophical Society and the American Antiquarian Society. Perhaps Heckwelder's most important contribution was his work translating the creation myths of the Lenape people and writing on their customs and manners. His published works include Account of the History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Nations who once inhabited Pennsylvania and the Neighboring States (1818); Narrative of the Mission of the United Brethren among the Delawares and Mohegan Indians (1820); and Names which the Lenni Lenape or Delaware Indians gave to Rivers, Streams, and Localities within the States of Pennsylvania. New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia, with their Signification (1822).Big Cat (d. c. 1797) was the Lenape name for Henque Puschees (and also known as Kelemand or Lieut-Colonel Henry), a Lenape Sachem. During the Revolutionary War, unlike many of the Lenape and other tribes along the Great Lakes, allied himself with the United States. He was a signer of the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and is is mentioned briefly in David Zeisberger's diary on November 17, 1788 ( KAPPLER, Indian Affairs: Laws and Treties, 1904 2:8; Diary of David Zeisberger... 1855, 456-7).         An ecclesiastical history, ancient and modern, from the birth of Christ to the beginning of the present century: In which the rise, progress, and variations of Church power are considered in their connexion with the state of learning and philosophy, and the political history of Europe during that period.

Philadelphia: Pr. by Stephen C. Ustick 6 vols. 8vo (22 cm, 8.625"). I: xxiii, [1 (blank)], [1] pp., pp. xviii–xxxi, [1 (blank)], 420 pp. II: [2] ff., 571, [1 (blank)] pp. III: [2] ff., 456 pp. IV: [2] ff., 510 pp., [1 (blank)] f. V: [2] ff., 496 pp. VI: [2] ff., 387, [1 (blank)], 8 pp., [10] ff.. 1797 Johann Lorenz von Mosheim (1694–755) was a professor of theology at Göttingen and his Institutiones historiae ecclesiasticae "was marked by hitherto unprecedented objectivity and penetration, and he may be considered the first of modern ecclesiastical historians" (ODCC). First published in 1726, this work was originally composed in Latin; Archibald Maclaine made this first of two translations into English in 1764. Of this first, 1797 American edition, vols. II–VI were printed 1798–99. Printed with ample notes, it has a series of chronological tables at the end. An eight- page Vindication of the Quakers disputing Mosheim's view of that denomination is also appended at the end of vol. VI, just before the list of subscribers. These latter include such noted names as John Adams, then President of the United States, and John Jay, then governor of New York. Contemporary sheep, spine modestly gilt with nice gilt-lettered morocco labels and old-fashioned paper library shelf labels; leather scuffed of old and with joints open, sewing holding. Foxing, browning, and staining, variously, the latter obscuring letters in a few places without loss of sense; some endpapers partially detached. Bookplates on some pastedowns. Untattered and a good, useable set.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE OF CLAIMS, ON THE PETITION OF THE WIDOW OF THE LATE SCOLACUTTAW, OR HANGING MAW, ONE OF THE CHIEFS OF THE CHEROKEE NATION OF INDIANS [caption title]

[Philadelphia], 1797. on a single folded sheet. Light foxing. Very good. Samuel Sitgreaves' copy, with his distinctive signature at the top of the first page. Sitgreaves was a Federalist party House representative from Pennsylvania from 1795 to 1798. Here, the widow of a Cherokee chief petitions the U. S. House of Representatives for financial relief after her husband and "a number of well disposed Indians" were killed by "John Beard, and a number of armed men" in an attack on the Tennessee frontier in 1793. While agreeing that Hanging Maw had been "uniformly friendly" to white settlers, and that he had been murdered, the House denies the claim, instead recommending to the widow that she take up her case with the Indian Department. A rare imprint, as OCLC locates just eight copies. EVANS 32999. OCLC 12431691.

Mexici: Apud Marianum Zunnigam, et Ontiverium Folio (27.5 cm; 11"). [1], 140 pp., [2] ff.. 1797 Fray Antonio de San Miguel, the bishop of Michoacan, reprints the statutes promulgated by the Third Mexican Provincial Council (1585) and the "Ordo servandus in choro" of Archbishop Alonso de Montúfar (fl. 1512–70). The archbishop originally established these 42 rules on proper organization and deportment for the choir of the Cathedral of Mexico City. The bishop of Michoacan undoubtedly wished to bring some of this order to his own bishopric and cathedral. Uncommon: WorldCat and NUC Pre-1956 locate only four copies in the U.S. Contemporary vellum over paste boards of printer's waste, vellum cockled and that of the front cover lightly rodent-gnawed at board edges. Worming in text, some of which is meander type, costing letters. Not a great copy, but given the scarcity, an acceptable one.

THE VIRTUOSO'S COMPANION AND COIN COLLECTORS GUIDE

London: Publish';d for the Proprietor by M. Denton, No 139 St. Johns St West Smithfield, 1797. Eight volumes, complete, bound in two. 12mo, handsomely bound in matching early dark brown calf; spines with five raised bands; crimson and black spine labels diminutively lettered in gilt; remaining four spine compartments richly decorated in a floral motif; sides paneled in gilt and in blind; board edges hatched in gilt; decorative blind inner dentelles; fine-combed marbled English endpapers. Finely engraved frontispiece of "History protecting Medals from the Ravages of Time" by T. Prattent, dated 1796; 8 original engraved titles, all dated 1797, each sequentially numbered in ink; single leaf Preface; 4 page Observations on Coins by James Wright; 15, (1) page Index; 8 page Index, to the Continuation; concluding 7, (1) page Index; 240 original engraved plates; each of which depicts both sides of four tokens. Minimal rubbing to binding extremities and occasional light foxing / discoloration; a few margins neatly strengthened. A charming, extremely attractive set. Overall, this is perhaps the finest set we have ever encountered of this classic series of plates, the only comprehensive early work depicting eighteenth-century English tokens. Issued serially over three years, complete sets are today decidedly rare. The preface proposed to issue "fac-similes of four hundred and eighty different Coins, in four Volumes twelves, with an elegant frontispiece, at the price of twenty shillings." After the four volumes had appeared such a wealth of tokens remained un-illustrated that it was decided to extend the series to eight volumes. Initiated by Denton, the last two parts were published by Prattent. The work appeared at ten- to fourteen-day intervals, price sixpence: three plates depicting twelve tokens comprising a number. Given the method of distribution, the change in publisher (many sets are comprised of only the first 180 plates), and the proclivity of early collectors to cut up plates to illustrate other books, it is not surprising that few complete sets have survived, especially with the various indexes and other textual enhancements. A blank leaf preceding the pertinent title in each volume is inscribed in ink: "Homer R. Stephens, Fernbrook Park, Ossining, N.Y., 1937." Included are a number of neat, light pencil notations on the plates, probably accomplished by an earlier collector and mainly describing edge varieties in the scribe's collection.

The History of Pennsylvania, In North America

Zachariah Poulson Junior,, Philadelphia: 1797 - Both volumes of this two volume set are in near fine condition in contemporary, full calf covered boards with red and black, gilt decorated labels on the spines. Both are octavos measuring 8 3/8" by 5" with very light wear and rubbing to the leather joints and to the tips of the boards to volume I. The same wear to the leather of volume II is present, but the upper 2" of the front joint is beginning to part. The hinges, joints and binding are otherwise tight and strong. The frontispiece portrait of William Penn is present, but the fold-out map frontispiece in volume II is missing. Volume I contains 508 pages of text and the errata. Volume II contains 373 pages of text followed by 132 pages of appendices and a 14 page index and the errata for volume II. Of particular interest is the fact that a gift inscription is present on the first (in Vol II) and second (Vol. I) free end pages of both volumes. These inscriptions read: "Peter Barker | to his valued | antient friend | Sarah Barney of | Nantucket " and dated "Philadelphia 11 mo. 22 1803" Beneath this date is another prior owner's name "James Barker". This Sarah Barney was quite likely the same Sarah Barney (1725-1808) of the Society of Friends who was well known as she was instrumental in promoting Quaker women's rights. Considered by Howes to be "quite scarce". (Howes, P-639; Sabin, 66223; Evans, 34421) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dam Amsterdam - vismarkt, Thomas Rowlandson.

Second or third edition in the original French, "the basis for editions in several foreign languages" (Anker), of La Pérouse's important Pacific voyage, first published in 1797. La Pérouse commanded an ambitious scientific expedition to the Pacific with the objective to establish trade contacts and to explore territories left uncharted by Cook. Fitted out with two ships, L'Astrolabe and La Bousole, the expedition sailed from Brest in August 1785. They called at Chile, Hawaii, Alaska, Macao, Manila, Terney, Kamchatka, Samoa and Tonga, reaching Botany Bay (Australia) in January 1788. La Pérouse weighed anchor in March of the same year. He sailed north into the Pacific and was never seen again. Some 40 years later Peter Dillon discovered the wreckage of his ships off Vanikoro. From the library of the Grafen von Ludolf. The text volumes and some plates somewhat foxed, the atlas frontispiece and title-page slightly dirty, some maps and charts with small tears at the folds, but still in good condition, most of the plates very good. All volumes rebacked (as noted), the atlas worn and the corners damaged. "An octavo edition of the La Pérouse voyage which is less often found than the official quarto edition" (Forbes).

His work deserves mention in any history of Renaissance historiography, not only for the immense stimulus it gave to Italian studies, but also for the direction it gave to many later interpretations. Roscoe conceived the whole cultural revival of the Renaissance in Italy as centering about the Medici family, as indeed largely the product of that family's intelligent direction and liberal patronage" (Ferguson, The Renaissance in Historical Thought, p. 164).         View of Hereford

London: Published by F. Jukes, 1797. Hand-coloured aquatint on wove paper. Very good condition apart from several light water stains in the right and left margins. A fine view of the ancient market town of Hereford, near the Welsh border, from "Series of Views on the River Wye" by Francis Jukes, one of the greatest English exponents of the art of aquatint, after a work by the landscape painter Edward Dayes. Francis Jukes was a prolific engraver, who was chiefly known for his topographical prints, the bulk of which he executed in aquatint. He contributed numerous plates to various publications including Walmsley's Views in North Wales (1792-4) and Campbell's A Journey in Scotland (1802) and collaborated on several projects with the engraver and publisher Robert Pollard. The title is actually "This distant View of Hereford...", and it indicates a different mind-set from ours by which we tend to believe a town consists of its buildings and a few prominent geographical features. In this view, only the cathedral, a couple of steeples and a few outlying houses are distantly visible. Hereford, in this rendition, is the vast space, the stormy sky and rolling fields, even the couple that walk the dusty road, the woman with a suitcase on her head, all taken together. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography ; cf. Abbey, Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland 545.
