Mémoires Pour Servir A L'Histoire Du Jacobinisme:, [Première Partie.]

London/Londres De L Imprimerie Francoise, Ph. Le Boussonier., 1797 - [4 nn S. Titel mit gestochener allegorischer Vignette] xx. 426 S. Wolfstieg I, 6367; Caillet I, 772; Erster Band der ersten Ausgabe des berühmten Werkes des Jesuiten Augustin Barruel (* 2. Oktober 1741 in Villeneuve de Berg, heute zum Département Ardèche; † 5. Oktober 1820 in Paris).

TRADUITES DU FRANCAIS EN ITALIEN PAR M. DEODATI

Paris: L'Imprimerie de Migneret 1797. Paris: L'Imprimerie de Migneret, 1797.. 487,[1]pp. Large octavo (230 x 160 mm). Contemporary tree calf, spine and edges decorated in gilt, a.e.g. Engraved portrait and 6 plates. A bit of dusting and foxing to prelims and terminal leaves; a bit of marginal spotting/foxing to plates and tissue guards; lower extremities and forecorners worn, with shallow loss at toe of spine, otherwise a very good copy. First edition in this format, with the text in parallel Italian and French. Illustrated with plates engraved by Choffard, Halbou, Ingouf, Patas, Gaucher and Lingée after designs by Le Barbier. The portrait was engraved by Gaucher after La Tour. This copy is from the deluxe issue on large vélin, with the plates before letters. Graffigny's epistolary novel was first published anonymously in 1747, represented as a sequence of letters written by a young Incan princess, Zilia, who was abducted by the Spanish during the conquest, and then after being rescued by French sailors, is introduced into French society. Graffigny was prompted to undertake the work after seeing a performance of Voltaire's ALZIRE, and relied on her reading of Garcilaso de la Vega for historical context. In fact, the cumulative result is a satirical view of French life, particularly the situation of French women, as seen by a complete outsider. The novel proved highly popular, and went through many editions, with a revised text appearing in 1752, and was the catalyst for sequels and pastiches by other hands. COHEN & DE RICCI, p.447. BRUNET II:1690.

Matching Set of Jedidiah Morse's First Gazetteers - 2 Volumes

Boston: S. Hall and Thomas & Andrews; Samuel Etheridge, 1797. Nice set of the first editions of Morse's Gazetteers. Vol. 1, The American Gazetteer . . . Of the American Continent was printed in Boston by Hall, Thomas, and Andrews in 1797. Vol. 2, A New Gazetteer of the Eastern Continent . . . was printed in Boston by Etheridge in 1802. Both volumes are complete with all maps in their original leather covers. Vol. 1 has seven maps (six folding). Vol. 2 has 17 folding maps (the title page mistakenly calls for 18, but the instruction to the binder specifies only 17, all by title). Sound bindings; front hinge of Vol. 1 has been neatly mended. Clean pages. All 24 maps are complete but one; the "Map of the Northern Part of the United States" is missing a 1" x 2" rectangle at the bottom of the inside edge (likely removed during binding). Some of the maps have minor toning and wear to the edges. The margins of several have been trimmed close to the frame-lines. The covers have some wear; the original red and gilt spine labels are in good shape. Overall, very nice. Very hard-to-find as a matched set. . First Edition. Leather. Very Good -. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

The Botanist's Repository, comprising colour'd engravings of new and rare plants only, with botanical descriptions &c, in Latin and English after the Linnaean system...

London, T. Bensley, for the author, 1797 (-1815). 10 volumes. 4to (282 x 220mm), with 10 engraved titles and 664 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary red half morocco, spines with gilt lines and lettering, sides red boards with gilt border. A very fine large and uncut set of the first edition of this showcase of exotic species, which made a contribution of lasting importance to the literature of botany and horticulture by providing records and means of identification of a great diversity of beautiful and interesting plants, many of them new to science (Hunt catalogue). A large number of the plants depicted and described are from Australia and South Africa (among the latter 47 proteas and 26 ixias). The text was written by John Kennedy, Adrian Haworth and George Jackson. Unusually, this copy has the printed title for volume one, along with the engraved titles for all volumes (the engraved title is transcribed above). Normally the letterpress titles were discarded by binders. The wording on the printed title is different and more extensive; see Stafleu. Each plate is accompanied by a leaf of letterpress text and each volume has an index leaf; in addition, volume one has a leaf of preface and errata, volume five has an index leaf to vols 1-5, and volume ten has a leaf of index to vols 6-10. The plates are all by Andrews. Great Flower Books, p. 83; Nissen BBI, 2382.

An uncommon map, published in the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives ? he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. Roma Rome 365 490

A very fine copy, from the library of the dedicatee, of this dissertation on the law of credit and finance, presented to the legal faculty of the University of Würzburg. Deissenberg (died 1815) is particularly concered with te issues surrounding the conflicting rights of creditors in cases of insolvency, with particularl attention to the practice in Würzburg. The work, which served as Deissenberg's dissertation under the supervision of the distinguished Franconian jurist Joseph Maria Schneidt (1727 - 1808), is dedicated to Georg Karl von Fechenbach, who became Prince Bishop of Würzburg in 1795, and was the last bishop also to have temporal authority over the city.

        Autograph letter signed

Philadelphia, 1797. Devèze, Jean (1753-1826?). Autograph letter signed, in French, to Theodore Charles Mozard (1755-1810). Philadelphia, 2 pluviose, an 5 (January 24, 1797). 1 page plus integral address leaf. 230 x 188 mm. Portion of letter (approx. 40 x 80 mm.) torn away from left margin when opened, affecting 4 lines of text, smaller portion of address leaf torn away when seal was broken, not affecting text. Very good otherwise.Rare autograph letter from French émigré physician Jean Devèze, best known for his feud with Benjamin Rush over the treatment of yellow fever during Philadelphia epidemic of 1793, to Theodore Charles Mozard, regarding the latter's admission to the American Philosophical Society. Devèze was then chief physician of a French military hospital established in Philadelphia; he had been admitted to the American Philosophical Society the year before. His letter can be translated in part as follows:"It is with great pleasure, my dear son and confrere, that I announce to you that you were elected a member of this city's Philosophical Society yesterday evening. An unfortunate quarrel between me and another over a member's right to propose candidates forced me to observe formalities and delayed your admission until this moment. You should not doubt my pleasure in being a member of the same society as yourself . . . [I beg you] to send me your baptismal name . . . so that I can expedite your diploma, which I will send you as soon as I have it in hand . . . "Devèze had arrived in Philadelphia from Santo Domingo (now Hispaniola) in the summer of 1793, during the yellow fever epidemic that was then devastating the city. Because of his extensive experience with the disease on Santo Domingo, he was immediately appointed head of Bush Hill, a yellow fever hospital in Philadelphia, where he treated patients by keeping them comfortable and clean and administering quinine and stimulants. Devèze's conservative treatment regimen contrasted sharply with that of Benjamin Rush, who advocated extensive bloodletting to combat the disease. Both Devèze and Rush published accounts of the yellow fever epidemic in 1794, but Devèze's went largely ignored for sixty years, until brought to light in La Roche's Yellow Fever Considered in its Historical, Pathological and Therapeutical Relations (1855).Devèze's correspondent Mozard was Consul of the French Republic at Boston. Unlike Devèze, who ended up settling in the United States (where his descendants changed their name to Dewees), Mozard left the country in 1798 after having his consulship revoked by President John Adams.

Bound Volume of Sheet Music with Eighteen Different Songs Signed by Charles Dibdin

Folio. Quarter calf and marbled papercovered boards. Corners of the boards worn away, a sound, good copy, internally ranging from good plus to very good. Owner's name "Campies Bitties L'Tomes Music Book -- Roswell Cobb Co. Georgia" on the front free endpaper. The rear free endpaper seems to have been used as a legal document at the Office of Music Conveyance (possibly affirming American or individual state copyrights?) in South Carolina, signed by Daniel Smith in Charleston and by Stephen Ravenel in Savannah, both in 1797, and further attested by Andrew M'Curdie, Alderman of Savannah in 1800. The book is bound up sheet music of English popular songs, many of them sea chanteys, the first twenty of the songs (from a total of about sixty-five in the volume), are written, composed, and published by Charles Dibdin, and eighteen of them have been Signed or Initialed by Dibdin at the bottom of the first page of music. Many of the songs are from Dibdin's various musical entertainments including The Quizes, or A Trip to Elysium; Private Theatricals, or Nature in Nubibus; Castles in the Air; The Wags, or The Camp of Pleasure; or The Oddities, the songs include: "Neighbor Sly," "Bill Bobstay," "The Lucky Escape," "Soldier Dick," "Little Ben," "Happy Jerry," "A Drop of the Creature," "The Tar for All Weathers," "Bachelor's Hall," and "Poor Tom, or the Sailor's Epitaph"; other songs not directly associated with specific shows include, "The Contented Sailor," and "The Negroes Complaint" (about a captured slave). Dibdin (1745-1814) was one of the most celebrated songwriters in England, and was particularly known, as one might guess from the title above, for his nautical songs. According to one source, Dibdin's patriotic nautical songs were said to be "worth ten thousand sailors to the cause of England," and manuscripts and signed copies of his sheet music are featured items in the collection of the Caird Library at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. The songs in this book seem to date from around 1788 -- 1791, Dibdin's most prolific period. .

'One of the few historians of the early nineteenth century to attempt a Kulturgeschichte of the Renaissance period was that strangely erudite Liverpool attorney, William Roscoe. His work deserves mention in any history of Renaissance historiography, not only for the immense stimulus it gave to Italian studies, but also for the direction it gave to many later interpretations. Roscoe conceived the whole cultural revival of the Renaissance in Italy as centering about the Medici family, as indeed largely the product of that family's intelligent direction and liberal patronage' (Ferguson, The Renaissance in Historical Thought, p. 164).         Il Comitato di Verificazione Ai Popoli Cispandani. Bologna 26. Marzo 1797. Anno I. della Repubblica Cispadana una, e indivisibile.

1 sheet. Broadside. First edition. Illus. with vignette at head of an allegorical female figure with Phrygian cap on a rod, leaning on fasces with an axe blade emerging. A broadside announcing a new constitution and proclaiming the creation of the Republic of Cispadana. The Cispadane Republic (Repubblica Cispadana) was a short-lived Napoleanic state, founded in 1796 with the protection of the French army, led by Napoleon Bonaparte. A preliminary draft of a constitution was began in January 1797 and worked on by a 'congress of the people' from January 21 to March 1, 1797. As a flag, it chose a tricolor (of red, green, and white), Italy's first. Bonaparte demanded additional changes to the constitution, including the abolition of a clause restricting the principle of equality: needed was "An absolute equality and understanding in the spirit, in virtue and in physical strength, in luck, in education, and good fortune to all men." In July the Republic was merged with the Transpadane Republic, forming the Cisalpine Republic (which was gone by 1802, merged into the new Italian Republic, also formed by Napoleon. In 1805, following Bonaparte's assumption of the title of Emperor of the French, the Italian Republic was transformed into the Kingdom of Italy [Regno d'Italia]). Reporting that the vote was in favor of the constitution, the broadside notes that "after abolishing tyranny, we have achived without revolution, a new government.. [and] ..we have a solemnly sanctioned social pact, we will soon have a stable government, legal representation, a body of magistrates, and public functionaries elected by various 'comitia' of the people." Very rare. The constitution itself shows a few institutional holdings and later reprints, bit this announcement is a different story; we could locate no copies at any North American or European Libraries. OPAC locates one copy with a similar title but issued one day later and published "In Bologna, ed in Ferrara, " at the Biblioteca Civica Bertoliana di Vicena. A fine copy, previously folded.

2011. Marriott, William. A New Law Dictionary; Comprehending A General Abridgment of the Law, on a More Extensive Plan than has hitherto been attempted: Containing not only the Explanation of the Terms, but also the Law Itself, Both with Regard to Theory and Practice in which are Incorporated the Statutes and Adjudged Cases down to the Present Time. Including all the Acts Passed the Last Session of Parliament Essentially Useful to Barristers, Solicitors, Justices of the Peace, Attornies, Solicitors, Students in the Law, Clergymen, Merchants, Traders, Parish Officers of Every Denomination, &c. Originally published: London: Printed for W. and J. Stratford, 1797-98. 4 Volumes. 2,580 pp. Reprinted 2011 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. With a new introduction by Bryan A. Garner, President, LawProse, Inc. ISBN-13: 9781616190439. ISBN-10: 1616190434. Hardcover. New. * Reprint of the rare original edition. "This four-volume work was the culmination of an 18th-century bloodline that began in 1729 with the appearance of Giles Jacob's New Law-Dictionary, which appeared in 11 editions through 1782. Jacob started a new genre: the law dictionary that was also an "abridgement"--that is, an alphabetically arranged restatement of the whole law, subject by subject. (...) His four-volume set (as ultimately published) has remained one of the most obscure law dictionaries ever. Copies are extremely rare today: few libraries, even at the institutions that have specifically built up their holdings in law dictionaries, possess one. I, for example, was never able to examine a copy until the page proofs of this reprint were made available to me. My guess is that no more than 100 were printed. Fewer than a dozen copies are known to exist. The book has therefore received scant attention." --From the Introduction by Bryan A. Garner.

Observations and experiments on the colour of blood.

PHOTOGRAPHS SENT ON REQUEST. In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, complete volume 87 (1797): pp416-431. With: Cruikshank, William Cumberland (1745-1800) Experiments in which, on the third day after impregnation, the ova of rabbits were found in the fallopian tubes; and on the fourth day after impregnation in the uterus itself; with the first appearance of the foetus. Ibid. 197-214. Folding plate. With: Wollaston, William Hyde (1766-1828). On gouty and urinary concretions. In: ibid.: 386-400. Whole volume, 4to. vi, [2], 546, [6], 26pp. 12 folding plates, late 19thC morocco-backed cloth, small neat uninked embossed library name on title and occasionally elsewhere, London: Peter Elmsly [for Royal Society], 1797. First Editions. Garrison-Morton 863.1 (Wells); 1218 (Cruikshank); 4282 (Wollaston). Wells was an American-born physician who received his medical training at the University of Edinburgh and spent most of his adult life in London, where he practiced medicine and performed scientific research in a number of areas. In the present paper Wells demonstrated that the colouring matter in blood is not iron but a complex organic substance; this was later identified as haematin, an iron compound responsible for haemoglobin's oxygen-carrying properties. Wells also made significant contributions to our understanding of binocular vision, and outlined a theory of natural selection prior to Darwin. Cruikshank's experiments, undertaken to confirm de Graaf's theories on generation in the rabbit, were undertaken in 1778 but not reported to the Royal Society until nearly 20 years later. Repeating de Graaf's experiments a total of 29 times, Cruikshank was able to show "that the ovum is formed in, and comes out of, the ovarium after conception. It then passes down the fallopian tube, in which it is sometimes retained and prevented from entering the uterus. A successful passage to the uterus takes four days. De Graaf did not see the foetus until the tenth day, whereas Cruikshank saw it on the eighth; and de Graaf only observed one ovum, while Cruikshank observed twenty-eight. By means of these experiments Cruikshank was able to throw some light on human reproduction, particularly on the causes of extrauterine pregnancies" (DSB). Wollaston's paper "showed that, in addition to stones consisting of uric acid, renal calculi might also consist of calcium phosphate, magnesium, ammonium phosphate, and calcium oxalate, or a mixture of these" (G-M). 33818

Octavo. xii,481 pp., + [1] errata. Contemporary calf, morocco label at spine. Ink ownership at front pastedown. Text is clean despite occasional, light soiling in margins and faint dampstaining at the bottom edge of the last few leaves. The binding is solid but quite worn looking; it is scuffed all over and rubbed at joints, with corners bumped, upper joint starting, and shallow loss at crown. Nonetheless, it is a very good copy overall. As the title indicates, this volume is a collection of essays, written in a discursive and conversational tone, covering a variety of topics: "Awakening the Mind," "Early Taste for Reading," "Riches and Poverty," ""Difference in Opinion," etc.

Dissertatio de canalibus et cataractis in Svecia generatim, speciatim vero Strömsholmensibus [and] Afhandling om Strömsholms Canal och Slusswärk.

Upsaliae / Upsala. Litteris Joh. Fr. Edman, reg. Acad. Typogr / Tryckt hos Joh. Fr. Edman, Kongl. Acad. Boktr. 1797. 4:o. 20,5 x 17 cm. Both the latin and the swedish treatsie present. Latin text: Title (in latin) + (4 pp. dedication in swedish) + 6 pp. (in latin). Swedish text: 36 pp. (including title) + (4 pp.) + folding table + large folding map, 25 x 147,5 cm unfolded. Both treatsies are complete. Newly attached blue/grey cover paper. A couple of map folds with minor repairs. Very nice condition.. A description of the history, construction and economy of the Strömsholms canal, completed in 1796. The tables describes what was shipped on the canal and at what prices etc. The tables also list the shareholders and how much capital they had invested. The map shows the entire length of the canal and its locks as well as some profiles. The map was engraved by Erik Åkerland a very skilled and productive engraver, pupil of Per Floding. At some point this copy seems to have been assembled by joining the latin and the swedish treatsies and then wrapped them in a blue/grey contemporary paper. Both the present treatsies are printed on thin paper, but they were also published on fine paper. At least the swedish fine paper edition is often seen with very large margins. The swedish fine paper edition also has a different title page, containing the authors name. The present thin paper treatsie copy do not have the name at the title. The present copy has the swedish dedication contained within the latin text, The copy in the swedish royal library has the same set up. Scarce
