THE MONTHLY MILITARY REPOSITORY. RESPECTFULLY INSCRIBED TO THE MILITARY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. VOL. I. [and] VOL. II. [all published]

New York: For the author, 1796-1797.. New York: For the author, 1796-1797.. Two volumes bound in one: 336pp., plus a single-page view of Quebec and eight folding maps; 215,[1]pp. Frontispiece portrait of George Washington in the first volume, portrait of Anthony Wayne before the titlepage of the second. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked in matching style, preserving original gilt leather spine label. Bookplates of noted collectors Frank Deering and Charles Sanders on front and rear pastedowns. Light tanning and foxing. Three-inch closed tear in Yorktown map. In a half morocco and patterned silk slipcase, spine gilt, very good. The Frank C. Deering copy, with his gilt leather bookplate on the front board. A rare complete copy of the MONTHLY MILITARY REPOSITORY, most often found with maps removed. Edited by Charles Smith, it initially appeared as a periodical, and then in this collected edition. The military descriptions of Revolutionary War battles in the text are believed to have been supplied by Baron Steuben and Gen. Horatio Gates. Smith informs the reader that he also includes "some rare and valuable manuscripts with which he has been favoured," as well as accounts of European wars, and extracts "from military works of merit." The book is most prized, however, for its accounts of the Revolution by high-ranking participants, and for the excellent folding maps, including the battles of Yorktown, Breeds [i.e. Bunker] Hill, Savannah, Charleston, Saratoga, White Plains, and Quebec. There is also a single-page view of Quebec. The outstanding map of Yorktown was drawn by the talented Benjamin Tanner, and shows the position of the American and French forces. The map of the siege of Savannah is by Charles B.J.F. Saint- Mémin, an artist best known for his profile portraits. This copy adds a map of the United States by Tanner. Sabin (50185) is incorrect in calling for only six maps in the first volume and 314pp. in the second. These errors are corrected in his entry 82379, which describes the two portraits, the view, and the folding maps, but also adds a portrait of Nathaniel Greene, which was apparently not issued with the work. A valuable narrative and cartographic history of the Revolution, and rarely found with all the maps. EVANS 30807, 32492. ESTC P3454. SABIN 50185, 82379. CHURCH 1271. HOWES S581 (note).

The Law of Nations, Or, Principles of the Law of Nature Applied to the Conduct and Affairs of Nations and Sovereigns : A Work Tending to Display the True Interest of Power

New York : Printed and sold by S. Campbell, 1796-01-01. New York : Printed and sold by S. Campbell, 1796-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo. xlviii, 563 p. 1st American Edition. Bound in contemporary full calf leather. Modern reback. Gilt lettering on red spine label. Good binding and cover. Two owner's name in 19th century ink. Clean, unmarked pages with minimal tanning. Foxing to pages.
Emer de Vattel was a noted Swiss philosopher and legal theorist. Vattel made important foundational contributions to modern international law and political philosophy. “To begin with, he applied a strictly interstate perspective in which the law of nations is specifically the law governing relations between States. Vattel recognized the existence of a duality of norms governing the conduct of sovereign States: the norms imposed by natural law and those imposed by the positive law of nations. He also theorized about a law of nations that is both ‘liberal and pluralist’, and which is very much in line with the state of European society at the time of the Enlightenment.” Emmanuelle Jouannet, The Oxford Handbook of the History of International Law .
Vattel’s impact can be seen on the framers of the American constitution. Jefferson notably read and admired Vattel’s work. An important work in legal history.

MacDonnell, The Great Jurists of the World 479, 504. Haydeblümchen. 2 Bl., 220 S. Mit gestoch. Titel mit Vignette und gefalt. Notentafel. Marmor. Pappbd im Stil d. Z. mit Rückenschild.

Hamburg, Mutzenbecher, (1796).. . Seltene erste Ausgabe. - Kawa 24.

        The Chase. A Poem

London: Printed by W. Bulmer, Shakespeare Printing Office, 1796. London: Printed by W. Bulmer, Shakespeare Printing Office, 1796. First Bulmer edition. 4to (12 x 9-1/2 inches). With wood engravings by John and Thomas Bewick. xv, vii, [i], 126 pp. Bound in full green levant morocco, triple gilt rule borders, spine gilt, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. Some foxing (chiefly to title page and frontispiece). Typed letter from bookseller Harry Levinson laid in, offering the present volume to a customer. Bookplate of Constance and Henry Bowles. Schwerdt II, p. 167; Hugo, The Bewick Collector, 94; Andrews, Tally Ho! 35 (for first ed.) . A foxhunting classic that "continues to be read for its depiction of a sport that has changed only in details since Somervile's time" (Andrews). The author, a devotee of field sports, was a genial man of whom it was said "his only enemy was the weather", and of whom Dr. Johnson remarked, "He writes very well for a gentleman." This copy extra-illustrated with the insertion of 38 plates by Samuel Howitt (from the British Sportsman, 1834); a proof wood-engraving by W. Smith and an engraving by Dodd ("Hare Hunting"). This edition is, as Schwerdt noted, "the finest of them all"; the superb wood engravings were designed and drawn on the block by John Bewick, who died before he could engrave them; apart from the final tail-piece, all were engraved by Thomas Bewick. At his death, the Gentleman's Magazine stated, "[John Bewick's] engravings to 'Somervile's Chace' will be a monument of Fame of more celebrity than marble can bestow." The letters of] Junius. Stat Nominis Umbra

printed by T. Bensley, for Vernon and Hood, London 1796 - 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. [2], xl, [4], 325; [2], 366; 2 inserted engraved title pages (dated 1797) plus 16 stipple-engraved portraits (moderately offset), contemporary full tree calf, red and green morocco labels on gilt- decorated spines; minor rubbing, but near fine throughout. "The secret of the authorship of these letters which puzzled the men of the last century still remains unsolved, and it may be added that with our present information it is practically insoluble" (Halkett & Laing III. 327), although current scholarship seems to suggest that they are the work of Sir Philip Francis (1740-1818). "The first of the letters of Junius appeared in Woodfall's Public Advertiser in London, Jan. 21, 1769. Further letters appeared irregularly until 21 Jan. 1772. The series attracted enough attention to make it profitable for various booksellers to bring out editions of the letters before the series was concluded. At least 16 of these unauthorized partial editions were published before the end of 1771. In addition, individual letters were published in other political collections" (NCBEL, II, 1178). A NEW AND ACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF ALL THE DIRECT AND PRINCIPLE CROSS ROADS IN ENGLAND AND WALES (PATERSON'S ROADS) / A TRAVELING DICTIONARY: OR, ALPHABETICAL TABLES OF THE DISTANCE OF ALL THE PRINCIPLE CITIES, BOROUGH, MARKET AND SEA-PORT TOWNS, IN GREAT BRITAIN, FROM EACH OTHER (BOUND IN A SINGLE VOLUME) CONTAINING: I. An Alphabetical List of all the Cities, Towns and remarkable Villages; with their Market-Days, and the Counties in which they are situated.II. The Direct Roads from London to all the Cities, Borough, Market, and Sea-Port, Towns; shewing the Distance from each City, Town, or Village, to the next on the same Road; with their Distance from London, and an Account of the Remarkable Seats that are near the Road.III. The Cross Road

T.N. Longman, LONDON 1796 - Daniel Paterson was the Assistant to George Morrison (to which the book is dedicated), the Quarter-Master-General of his Majesty's Forces. This is the Eleventh Edition of an important chapter in the history of coaching, this indispensable tool was one all coachmen carried to find their way, "with the addition of many more pages, including considerable Improvements in the direct Roads, many new Cross Roads, and a great Number of Noblemen's and Gentlemen's Seats.". 406 pp. includes index to Country Seats. In the preface, the publishers thusly describe the companion volume to this single-bound volume, called The Traveling Dictionary: "Having thus, to the best of our Abilities, supplied the Traveller with a full and accurate Description of a much greater Collection of Roads than was ever before attempted; yet, as the different Routs which Travellers may have Occasion to take are almost infinite, and consequently not comprisable in a Volume of this Size, we have, in order to complete our Plan, compiled, and published separatelly, a Second Part to this Work.By these Tables, the Traveller will find the Compass he must make to visit any Place or Places which he may be desirous of taking in the Course of his Journey, and will likewise be enabled, at setting out, to form an Estimate of his Time and Expence, by ascertaining the Number of Miles he must travel, with the greatest Exactness, should the Tour he proposes to make be ever so much about, or irregular." Further, the author adds: "the two bound together make a complete Travelling Companion". ".When the Travelling Dictionary is bound up with this, Then the Distances between any two Places (London not being one of them) follow the Index to the Gentlemen's Seats; and, at the End of them, are the Distances of the several Towns and Bridges upon the River Thames, from London Bridge, and from each other, by Water." This, (bound together with Paterson's Roads) Seventh Edition of The Traveller's Dictionary, consisting of 215 pp., and published in 1797.Later binding of rich vermilion calf, with raised bands, black spine label with gilt-stamped title and date. A Treatise on the Police of the Metropolis; Containing a Detail of the Various Crimes and Misdemeanors by which Public and Private Property and Security are, at Present, Injured and Endangered: and Suggesting Remedies for their Prevention. By a Magistrate.

London: Printed by H. Fry for C. Dilly 1796 - Third edition. 8vo. xviii, (6), 440, xxviii pp. Nineteenth century full tan calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered label, engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Robert Johnson Eden to the front pastedown. Joints neatly repaired, spine darkened, else very good. The author spent the early part of his working life in commerce before moving to London and devoting himself to public service. He was appointed to the position of magistrate in 1792 and subsequently campaigned for the development of a rudimentary police force. The scheme that he submitted to the authorities was ill thought through and was easily dismissed. However, in attempt to garner wider public support for his arguments he published his analysis, a move which met with much success and led to multiple editions within a few years. His reputation enhanced, Colquhuon subsequently helped to found the Thames Police.
