(all present.) Plates slightly larger (32 x 24 cm) than in the earlier quarto edition and are also identified outside the image David Roberts, R.A. (24 October 1796 ?" 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838?"1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841. In 1838, Roberts embarked on a journey that would shape Europe's perception of the Middle East and then Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce the lavishly illustrated plates of the Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria, 1842?"1849 and Egypt & Nubia series. He funded the work through advance subscriptions which he solicited directly. The scenery and monuments of Egypt and Holy Land were fashionable but had hitherto been hardly touched by British artists, and so Roberts quickly accumulated 400 subscription commitments, with Queen Victoria being subscriber No. 1. Her complete set is still in the Royal Collection. The timing of publication just before photographs of the sites became available proved fortuitous.

The book contains a lot of valuable information, it is cut into thin varied chapters, including the Dutch counters, Portuguese, and jeopardizes the English in Hindustan. These memories should have appeared in 1784, as they were led by a delegation in order to inform the French about the situation of this country, but the Revolution and events in France delayed the publication. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

        Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark

      (iv). London: J. Johnson, 1796 8vo. (iv), 262, (2, appendix), (2, notes), (2, ads) pp. Modern calf antique, early ink signature on title-page, first and last leaves browned, overall, a very good copy. First edition of these eloquent travel narratives, comprising the first published account in English of a woman travelling on business. "When Johnson published the Letters they found an enthusiastic public, not least among young poets. The wording of her description of the waterfalls she visited . . . appears to have played a part in inspiring Coleridge's description of the sacred river Alph in Xanadu; and the theme of the book . . . set a fashion for questing romantic journeys. Byron, Wordsworth, Shelley, and Mary's as yet unborn daughter Mary, who sends her Frankenstein north at the end of his story, all read and followed in Mary Wollstonecraft's footsteps." (Tomalin, The Life and Death of Mary Wollstonecraft, Penguin 1992, p. 228.) Godwin noted in his memoirs (1798): "If ever there was a book calculated to make a man in love with its author, this appears to me to be the book." With the final advertisement leaf listing all of Mary Wollstonecraft's books from Johnson to that date, the first "bibliography" of her work. Rothschild 2598. Windle A7a.

        A Select Collection of Epigrams. Many of them Original.

      Printed for Thomas Clio Rickman and John Walker 1796 - FIRST EDITION, some scattered foxing, occasionally a poor impression of the type, pp. vi, [1], 112, 12mo, contemporary calf, single gilt fillet border on sides, spine gilt, red lettering piece, rebacked preserving the original spine, good. Rare; ESTC records just BL, 2 in the Bodleian, Folger, LoC, and Wayne State. Rickman defines an Epigram as 'a few lines on a given subject, either humourous or grave; having an unexpected and happy turn to work up its climax.' As such, there aren't very many, and the smallness of the volume is thus doubly appropriate. His own contributions are not numerous, but include an Impromptu on Thomas Paine's Work - Rights of Man, being prohibited Sale. Most of the epigrams are of the humourous kind, on cuckoldry, scolding wives, &c, but fun is also poked at monarchs and the Church. 'Rickman's name will be forever linked with Paine, for he "was to Paine what Boswell was to Johnson" . Paine stayed as a lodger at the Rickmans' home in 1791 and 1792 and while there completed the second part of The Rights of Man . Rickman faced constant suspicion for selling Paine's books. He did not make matters easy for himself by composing and publishing songs in praise of political liberty and the French Revolution' (ODNB). (ESTC T115750)

        The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne. A Highland Story

      Philadelphia: Published by Thomas Bradford, 1796. First American edition. 12mo. Contemporary sheep, red morocco label. Some chipping of spine, rubbing, some browning and spotting of text, tears, mostly marginal though that on I6 with loss of four lines of text. First American edition. 12mo. Her first book, published in 1789. Described by Baker as a "sham historical novel mixing up baronial and highland life on the north-east coast of Scotland with the courtly and chivalrous society of Gothic romance" (p. 21). Radcliffe is known best for her Gothic novels where acts of the supernatural and the mysterious are used to draw horror and terror from the reader and are ultimately given some commonplace explanation. The Gothic novels of Radcliffe, Walpole, Godwin and others greatly influenced American novelists, especially Charles Brockden Brown who adapted the Gothic elements to the American climate and audience. Shipton and Mooney 31067. For the first edition: Block, p. 193; Summer, p. 135; Tinker 1700

Pietro Trapassi (1698-1782), better known as Metastasio, was regarded as one of the greatest poets of the 18th century; his libretti were set to music by numerous prominent composers. Although his works had been translated into English by John Hoole in 1767, Burney's treatment of him is still the most extensive in English. "Although his fame rests chiefly on his 27 opera seria librettos, his works intended for musical setting also include a comic intermezzo, close to 40 occasional pieces (ranging from elaborately staged feste teatrale to simple complimenti for two participants), 8 oratorios, 37 cantatas, 8 solo complimenti, 7 canzonettas, 33 strofe per musica and other lyrical stanzas. This broad spectrum, widened further by settings of some of the 32 sonnets, has brought over 400 composers in contact with Metastasian texts." Don Neville in Grove Music Online.

        The GROUP; or, An Elegant Representation. Illustrated.

      Philadelphia: Printed for Thomas Stephens, By Lang and Ustick, 1796. 35, [1 (Errata)]. A verse satire in support of George Washington's administration and the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation Between His Britannic Majesty and The United States of America, commonly known as the Jay Treaty after its chief American negotiator, John Jay. Much of the poem is in the form of a dialogue "in which various mechanics and tradesmen, Solon Verges a carpenter [the subject of the frontispiece], Nat Futtock a shipwright, Gobbo Finis a coffin-maker, John Stripe a schoolmaster, with others, are represented as meeting for discussion on topics beyond their reach, respecting politics and the state. The coarse and vulgar material of low Jacobinism, which is not at all disguised in the poem, is occasionally elevated by the polish of the author's verses" (Cyclopaedia of American Literature, 1875). Authorship is usually attributed to William Cliffton, son of a wealthy Quaker, whose ill health allowed him the time for literary pursuits. His works are noted for their "vituperations of the French revolutionists and the party enemies of the writer" [i.e., Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans] (Kettel, Specimens of American Poetry). Marbled paper spine perished. Bookseller slips to ffep. Light offset to t.p. from frontis. Otherwise, a respectable VG - VG copy.

        Über das Organ der Seele,

      Königsberg Nicolovius, 1796 - seltene EA, "unserem Kant" gewidmet. Soemmerring vertrat die These, die Seele sei in der Flüssigkeit der Hirnventrikel lokalisiert. Sein Buch ist der letzte Versuch, ein "Seelenorgan" zu begründen, d.h. eine bestimmte lokalisierte Strukur innerhalb des Gehirns, wobei Soemmerring den Ort der Interaktion zwischen Körper und Seele in die Flüssigkeit der Hirnventrikel verlagert. Zwar behauptet S. in einleitenden Worten zum Kommentar Kants im Anhang, dieser habe "die Gefälligkeit", seiner Idee "nicht nur seinen Beifall zu schenken, sondern dieselbe sogar noch zu erweitern und zu verfeinern und so zu vervollkommnen", aber dieser kritisiert ihn doch scharf und wirft ihm vor, nicht genau zwischen dem Sitz der Seele und dem Sitz des Seelenorgans zu unterscheiden. "Nun kann die Seele sich nur durch den inneren Sinn, den Körper aber . nur durch äußere Sinne wahrnehmen, mithin sich selbst schlechterdings keinen Ort bestimmen, weil sie sich zu diesem Behuf zum Gegenstand ihrer eigenen äußeren Anschauung machen und sich außer sich selbst versetzen müßte; welches sich widerspricht" (p. 86). - NORMAN 1972, HIRSCH/H.         ATWOOD (George) The Construction and Analysis of Geometrical Propositions, Determining the Positions Assumed by Homogeneal Bodies Which Float Freely, and at Rest, on a Fluid's Surface;

      - Also Determining the Stability of Ships, and of Other Floating Bodies, 46-130; Presented within the complete volume of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol 86, Parts I and II (complete), bound in one volume for 1796. * "Atwood entered Trinity College in 1765, subsequently taking active part in reviving natural philosophy teaching in Cambridge. On 13 June 1776 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. He demonstrated elementary mechanics and hydrostatics with pulleys, pendulums, and air-pumps, as well as electricity, magnetism, and optics, including Leonhard Euler's principles of achromatic lenses. The lectures drew large audiences, including William Pitt, and complemented the reform of 1779 that overhauled the Senate House examination and highlighted mathematical expertise." (ODNB) The present work is his major contribution on the stability of floating bodies, comparing the mathematics of flotation with the performance of the Cuffnells, an East India Company ship built by Randall and Brent. His conviction being that the "imperfections in the theory of vessels, are amongst the causes which have contributed to retard the progress of naval architecture, by increasing the hazard of failure in attempting to supply its defects by experiment. doubts which can be resolved only by having recourse to actual trial: a species of experiment rarely undertaken under the impressions of uncertain success, when the objects of it are so costly. To the imperfections of theory, may also be attributed that steady adherence to practical methods, rendered familiar by usage, which creates a disposition to reject rather than to encourage, proposals of innovation in the construction of vessels." * Presented within the complete volume of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol 86, Parts I and II (complete), bound in one volume for 1796, comprising, vi, (2), 510, (10)pp., quarto, with 15 engraved plates (mostly folding or extending), late 19thC morocco backed library cloth with a neat unlinked library name stamp on general title, foot of last leaves and occasionally elsewhere, a good copy, London, Elmsly printer to the Royal Society,1796. * A FULL LIST OF CONTENTS OF THIS VOLUME SENT ON REQUEST.         Letters written in France, to a friend in London, between the month of November 1794, and the month of May 1795 By Major Tench, of the Marines, late of His Majesty's Ship Alexander

      London: J. Johnson, 1796. 8vo., iv + 224pp., front free endpaper creased, some foxing at foot of title, occasional old marginal emphasis marks, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, flat spine gilt and labelled. A very good copy. First edition. Really quite rare: ESTC locates a total of 15 libraries with copies, of which only the Alexander Turnbull Library (Wellington, N.Z.) in Australasia. Watkin Tench (1759?-1833), perhaps born in Wales (Wantrup suggests it was actually Chester). was a professional soldier, served for a time in America, and was sent to Australia in 1787 as a captain of marines in charge of convicts. In 1789 he published a Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay>, the first published account of white settlement in Australia. According to Jonathan Wantrup (Australian Rare Books, 1788-1900>, 1987, p.56), Tench 'wrote in an easy, natural, but literate style that remains eminently readable to-day'. After his four years in Australia, Tench returned to England serving on the Alexander under Captain Richard Rodney Bligh. In November 1794 the ship was captured by a French squadron and taken into Brest: Tench was held prisoner-of-war but was selected by Bligh as his A.D.C. and interpreter. The Letters written in France> were written 'under very adverse circumstances, in a part of France remote from the beaten track in which travellers generally keep'. The Letters> are in fact a detailed diary of life as a (relatively free) English P.O.W. in provincial post-Revolutionary France. He describes Brest and Quimper, meets local people, the military and civil servants, discusses and listens to political debate promoted by royalists, federalists, republicans, and partizans of all sorts. He sees a France that is 500 miles from the capital: it is a confused, chaotic picture of an unsettled country. The author leaves the reader with a feast of vivid vignettes of 'real life' and 'real people' that is an enduring record of the times. It is interesting to note that a result of Tench's experiences of France in 1794/5 was to admit a sympathy with the revolutionary cause. 'Had I been born a Frenchman, I should have struggled as hard for the revolution of 1789 ... Since I have resided among the French, I have met only one person ... who has expressed to me a wish to see the old system restored ...' [p.166].

        A Voyage to New South Wales; with a Description of the Country; The Manners, Customs, Religion, &c. of the Natives, in the Vicinity of Botany Bay. By George Barrington, now Superintendent of the Convicts at Paramatta [sic]

      Printed by Thomas Dobson, Philadelphia 1796 - Duodecimo, with 2-pp. publisher's advertisements, contemporary owner's inscription for "Will. Bowman"; the text embrowned with some foxing, a good copy in old sheep boards, recently rebacked. The rare American Barrington. Only the second work on Australia to be published in America. This first American edition of Barrington's Voyage, in appealing and characteristic contemporary condition, is very rare; two copies are recorded at the State Library of New South Wales (Mitchell and Dixson), while the National Library has Ferguson's copy and a fourth is to be found at Monash University.It is ironic that an essentially fraudulent work should prove to be a fundamental source for eighteenth-century American knowledge of the new settlement at Port Jackson. Eighteenth-century American voyage publications are generally acknowledged as rare: this is particularly interesting as one of only two accounts of New South Wales printed in the United States by 1800. The Philadelphia Barrington was preceded only by the exceptionally rare 1789 New York edition of Tench, of which only two copies are known, at the Mitchell and the National Library.         Erklärung der Kupfer zur Darstellung des Geschmacks der verschiedenen Völker

      (Leipzig, Göschen 1796 - 1798).. Mit 49 Kupfertafeln. 10 S. HLdr. um 1850. 20,5 x 25,5 cm. ADB XXVII, 105; Rümann 887; Ornamentkatalog 3978. - Der sehr seltene Tafelband zu dem vierbändigen Werk "Darstellung und Geschichte des Geschmacks der vorzüglichsten Völker in Beziehung auf die Auszierung der Zimmer und auf die Baukunst". Die Tafeln u. a. von P. Veith, J. G. Schmidt, J. G. Seiffert, J. A. Dornstedt nach Christian Friedrich Schuricht. - Rackwitz (1744-1818) war seit 1790 Hofmarschall am kursächsischen Hof; in dieser Eigenschaft war er u. a. für die Verwaltung und Ausgestaltung der herrschaftlichen Gartenanlagen und Wohnräume zuständig. Das Werk zeigt die verschiedensten Möglichkeiten und Stilentwürfe auf, der hier vorliegende Tafelband mit einer Vielzahl an Beispielen besonders für die Ausgestaltung von Gärten und Parkanlagen. - Nicht überall stießen die Racknitzschen Ideen auf Begeisterung, Schiller und Goethe spotteten in den Xenien: "Ehemals hatte man einen Geschmack; nun gibt es Geschmäcke; Aber sagt mir, wo sitzt dieser Geschmäcke Geschmack?" und "Kamtschadalisch lehrt man euch bald die Zimmer verzieren, Und doch ist Manches bei euch schon kamtschadalisch genug". - Die wenigen Vergleichsexemplar auf deutschen Auktionen der letzten 60 Jahre immer mit nur 48 Tafeln. Einige Tafeln etwas stockfleckig, insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar!
