        Scherzi poetici e pittorici.

        Valley of Glencoe

London: Published by Robert Andrew Riddell, 1795. Colour-printed aquatint. Full inscription at bottom of print reads: 'To the Most Noble George Marquis of Tweedale & this View of the Valley of Glencoe is respectfully Inscribed by His Lordships most obedient Humble Servant.' Very good condition apart from some light soiling, minor foxing, and several small losses in the margins. A fine plate of the scenic mountains of Glencoe in the Highlands of western Scotland. This beautiful image is most likely part of a pair prints depicting Glencoe that Riddell published in 1795. Robert Andrew Riddell was a landscape painter, who primarily depicted the scenic topography of Scotland in watercolour. He exhibited one of his works at the Royal Academy in 1793 and gave several of his paintings to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Archibald Robertson (1765-1835) was a Scottish artist, very talented in both painting and printmaking, who immigrated to America around 1796 (soon after this print was published) where he had a successful career painting miniature portraits on ivory. He also produced a number of topographical prints of New York City places: "Collect Pond" of 1798 among others. A number of his miniature portraits are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. This early work of the Highland valley Glencoe is an extraordinarily fine landscape print, aesthetically superior to Robertson's American prints, and a fine example of colour printed aquatint.

– Exlibris.         Outlines of an Historical View of the Progress of the Human Mind:

London: Printed for J. Johnson,, 1795. being a posthumus work of the late M. de Condorcet. Translated from the French. Octavo (205 x 126 mm). Contemporary half calf, marbled sides, spine gilt in compartments, titles to spine gilt, edges sprinkled green. Contemporary ownership signatures to front pastedown and head of title page. Extremities slightly rubbed and worn, joints cracked but firm, endpapers lightly tanned, occasional minor spotting to text block. A very good copy. First edition in English of Esquisse d'un tableau historique de progrès de l'esprit humain, originally published earlier the same year in Paris. "In the Esquisse ... Condorcet traces the history of man through epochs, the first three covering his progress from savagery to pastoral community and thence to the agricultural state. The next five span the growth of civilizations, and knowledge down to Descartes, and the ninth describes the revolution of Condorcet's own lifetime, from Newton to Rousseau. The prophetic view of the tenth epoch shows Condorcet at his most original. He forecasts the destruction of inequality between nations and classes, and the improvement, intellectual, moral and physical, of human nature" (PMM).

The scholar armed against the errors of the time. Or, a collection of tracts on the principles and evidences of Christianity, the constitution of the Church, and the authority of civil government. In two volumes. ..... The whole intended for the information and assistance of young students in our schools and universities; and published by a Society for the Reformation of Principles.

London: F. and C. Rivington. 1795. Two vols., 8vo., (10) + xi + (3) + 576 and (4) + 525 + (1)pp., with the mid-19th century armorial bookplates of John Bowles >on pastedowns, contemporary tree calf, sometime rebacked, spines gilt and labelled. A fine copy in a pleasing binding. Second edition*: scarce. 'Jones of Nayland (1726-1800), Anglican clergyman and religious controversialist, and his associates had early on after 1789 been inspired by the French Revolution to heightened energy in defence of the Church against what they saw as anarchy, irreligion, and Antichrist. In 1792 Jones founded the Society for the Reformation of Principles to promote high-church values, which resulted in the publication of the British Critic>. He edited in 1795 an expanded version of a collection of tracts previously published fifteen years earlier and now entitled The Scholar Armed against the errors of the time>. ..... [Jones's] career illustrates the ways in which the high-church mentality, with its connotations of sacerdotalism and respect for divinely constituted authority, was more influential in the 18th century than has sometimes been appreciated. The threats to order posed by the American War of Independence, and even more by the French Revolution, gave Jones and his contemporaries a wide readership.' [G.M. Ditchfield in ODNB]. * This 2nd ed. (the 1st was 1780) is much enhanced by Jones's detailed proposals for the formation of the Society for the Reformation of Principles. They are set out here in full (pp. i-xi) in three papers and a postscript severally dated January 1, 1792, June 11, 1792, and January, 1795. There were to be 'acting' [i.e. active] members, a committee, and annual subscribers. Messrs. Rivington, the London publishers, were to accept subscription.

        Amsterdam antieke plattegrond.

The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out of the original tongues; and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by His Majesty's special command.

[with] O.T. Psalms. English.1795. Paraphrases. The Psalms of David in metre. Translated, and diligently compared with the original text, and former translations. More plain, smooth, and agreeable to the text, than any heretofore. Allowed by the authority of the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland, and appointed to be sung in congregations and families. Edinburgh: Mark & Charles Kerr, 1795. 4to. [24] ff. The Kerrs, printers to His Majesty, published a number of Bibles in the late 18th century, with minor to significant variations among the editions -- including several different formats in 1793. In the present (uncommon) large quarto edition, the Apocrypha are not present although listed in table of contents, but the signatures of the Old and New Testaments are continuous and uninterrupted; the New Testament has a separate title-page. This edition ends with leaf 6M4 and does not match Darlow and Moule 957 (Edinburgh: M. & C. Kerr, 1793), described as a folio with text ending on 9R2, although that entry's statement that "The insertion of the Apocrypha interrupts the signatures" would seem to explain the absence of the non-integral Apocrypha; the accompanying Scotch Metrical Psalms of 1795 are also present in Darlow and Moule's listing. Herbert finds additional Kerr printings of 1793, but none that match the format and collation of this copy. Scarce: ESTC, OCLC, and NUC Pre-1956 find only two U.S. holdings. Provenance: The beautifully written ownership note, "Rebecca Jane Emack," at top of first text leaf.

        Scherzi poetici e pittorici...

Parma, Co’tipi Bodoniani, 1795. 4to, 54 leaves, some edges untrimmed. With an engraved title-page and 40 plates printed in sepia, with black ornamental borders, by Jose Teixeira Barreta. Early stiff vellum, backstrip gilt with red and black labels, gilt edges, a fine copy in a modern cloth box. First Bodoni edition, and one of a few Bodoni imprints issued with illustrations (the others mostly being fête books). This copy has large margins and is printed on fine paper with the plates in delicate shades of sepia -- it may be one of 12 copies that Brooks and de Lama refer to as ‘colored’. De Lama notes copies with plates printed in black, plates “medesimi coloriti all’etrusca” and (this copy) “altri coi rami stampati in rosso pallido entro un arabesco nero”. Updike, Printing Types, vol. 2, page 165 etc. notes that Bodoni’s earlier books (such as this) are to be preferred both for their fine design and presswork, for which he was justly renowned. This work, a collection of poems, is printed in roman and italic; each poem is illustrated with an allegorical engraving, contained in an elaborate border (all different) printed in black -- in a simple neo-Classical style. Barreta (Benezit gives Bareto) was a Portuguese Benedictine monk whose artistic skills were renowned -- in addition to these engravings he executed a number of full-scale paintings at his monastery which still survive. A second edition (without the plates) appeared in 1804. Brooks 600. De Lama II, 107/8. Weiss Catalog 11 (1926) #249 (but of the four copies, none with this configuration of illustrations in russet and borders in black).

Cries of London, Plate 10, Old Chairs to Mend

London: Published by Colnaghi & Co. No. 132 Pall Mall, 1795. Colour printed stipple engraving. Printed on wove paper. In good condition with the exception of being trimmed just within the platemark on all sides. Margins have some loss to surface of paper. Traces of glue residue on verso of sheet. Small sections of lost paper on upper and bottom margin has been expertly infilled. Image size: 14 x 11 inches. A wonderful image of a chair mender from Wheatley's famous "Cries of London" series. The "Cries of London" was a recurring theme in English printmaking for over three centuries. These colourful prints form a visual record of London's "lower orders", the peddlars, charlatans, street hawkers, milkmaids, and grocers who made their living on the city streets. They give the viewer a glimpse of a long forgotten London where tradesmen would advertise their wares with a musical shout or a melodic rhyme. Different versions of the "Cries" vary in tone from idealistic visions of contented street vendors to satirical caricatures of humorous urban figures. One of the most famous series of "London Cries" is the group of pretty pictures executed by Francis Wheatley. Wheatley's series was immensely popular and enjoyed a long period of success in the English print shops. Between 1792 and 1795 Wheatley exhibited 14 paintings of the "Cries" at the Royal Academy. The pictures attracted a great deal of attention at the exhibition and Colnaghi & Co. quickly agreed to publish a series of engravings after Wheatley's famous series. Only thirteen of the fourteen paintings were engraved and they were offered for sale individually or in a portfolio collection. The prints, which were executed in stipple, were engraved by some the most noted engravers in England; artists such as Luigi Schiavonetti, Giovanni Vendramini and Thomas Gaugain all contributed their work to the series. Complete collections of the "Cries" remained immensely popular, and by 1910 they were fetching more than James Audubon's folio "Birds of America" at auction. This lovely print is plate ten in the series and depicts an industrious craftsman mending chairs outside a simple house; St. Paul's is pictured in the background. Roberts F. Wheatley, R.A. His Life and Works London , 1910, pp.28-32.

This lovely print is plate eight in the series and depicts a cherry seller weighing out a portion of cherries for two eager children. Roberts F. Wheatley, R.A. His Life and Works London, 1910, pp.28-32.

Ruins at the Ancient City of Gour formerly on the banks of the river Ganges

London: published for Thomas Daniell by Robert Bowyer, 1795. Colour printed aquatint with hand-finishing by Thomas Daniell, on wove paper. Gour was once the capital of Bengal but had been abandoned in 1575. Gaur, or Gour, is the name of what was once both a capital city and country in what is now Bengal, not far from the India-Bangladesh border. Founded in the 6th century, it was the site of a Buddhist kingdom ruled by a man named Gopala. The Pala Dynasty, known to its enemies as the Lords of Gauda, reigned during the 8th century, and eventually was supplanted by the Sena Dynasty. No written record of Gaur exists prior to the Muslim Conquest of 1198 however. Since then, plunder, plague, neglect and the jungle have ruled. In addition, the course of the Ganges changed over the intervening period, lessening the region's usefulness. Very little remains of the city that was once there. Thomas Daniell here drew one of the more enduring ruins, what is probably the Great Golden Mosque or Bara Darwaza. It is intriguing from an architectural history view for its pointed arch and what appear to be octagonal towers. The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is one of the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further thirteen years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement lay in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that captured the European taste for sublime landscapes, while grounded in and faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an evocative vision of this wondrous country. Consisting of one hundred and forty-four views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of twenty-four plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801; twelve plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; twenty-four plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; twenty-four plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807; and twelve further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the twenty-four plates of Hindoo Excavations, which are after drawings by James Wales. Abbey Travel II 420, no.127; cf. Lowndes I, p.588; Martinelli/Michell India Yesterday and today "8 - Gaur, Dakhil gate"; cf. RIBA 799-804; cf. Sutton The Daniells (1954) p.156; cf. Tooley 172.
