The Camp, A Musical Entertainment, as Performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. By R.B. Sheridan, Esq

London: [s.n.], 1795. First edition. 28 pp. 8vo. Blue wrappers. Covers lightly stained, a few pale stains to text. First edition. 28 pp. 8vo. The authorship of this play is debated, with Williams ascribing the work to Richard Tickell (1751-1793), with revisions by Sheridan. ESTC notes a manuscript draft of the play in Tickell's hand. It has also been ascribed to Sheridan with assistance from John Burgoyne and David Garrick. The songs by Thomas Linley were originally written for Thomas Hill's The Royal Merchant. The play, with prologue by Tickell, is included Cecil Price's edition of the Sheridan's dramatic works. After a thorough discussion of the contested authorship, Price concludes that the work was "essentially a topical, co-operative venture, brought out with zest to meet the needs of the moment. I see no objection to the idea that other writers may have had some hand in it, even though I believe that Sheridan was responsible for many of the lines" (The Dramatic Works of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, II, p. 710). The action revolves around preparations at Coxheath for the invasion of England by France following that country's alliance with the colonies in the American War of Independence. The play debuted on 30 October 1779 at Drury Lane and ran for 57 performances, though was not in print until this unauthorized 1795 edition. The text, with its many errors and paraphrases, was likely taken down during a performance. Scarce, with ESTC locating only 16 copies (low for Sheridan) and ABPC recording only one copy sold at auction. ESTC T19858; Williams, p. 231

Lande states, "We owe the publication of this Journey to the celebrated French navigator Le Perouse, who captured Fort Albany on Hudson Bay and found Hearne's manuscript... He gives much attention to the natural history and to the Indian tribes of the Region." Lande 1220. Hill 791. Sabin 31181. Streeter Sale 3652. First edition of a scarce classic of Arctic travel.

Ouvrage posthume. Octavo (199 x 124 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep, green morocco spine label, compartments decorated in gilt, red edges. Minor wear to extremities, boards and spine a little scuffed, endpapers slightly browned, an excellent copy. First edition of the finest and most durable expression of the ultimate perfectibility of man. "The prophetic view of the tenth epoch shows Condorcet at his most original. He forecasts the destruction of inequality between nations and classes, and the improvement, intellectual, moral and physical, of human nature. Unlike Godwin, he does not preach absolute equality, but equality of opportunity" (PMM). "The aim of the Esquisse was to demonstrate man's progressive emancipation, first from the arbitrary domination of his physical environment and then from the historical bondage of his own making" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy II, 184). By linking the question of human progress with that of population, Condorcet also anticipated the work of Malthus (see Spengler, French Predecessors of Malthus).

1795. Late-Eighteenth Century English Manuscript Book of Precedents [Manuscript]. [Smith, Joseph]. Precedents. Southern England, c. 1795. Approximately 200 ff. with content, most leaves have content to rectos and versos. Folio (12-1/2" x 8"). Contemporary flexible sheep, blind rules to boards, "Precedents" in early hand to head of front cover. Moderate rubbing and scuffing to boards, heavier wear to extremities, corners worn away, spine mostly perished, covers and text block secure, a few leaves loose or partially detached, ater armorial bookplate of Hubert Smith-Stanier to front pastedown, a leaf of notes in his hand laid in. "Joseph Smith/ 1795" to recto of first leaf, light toning to text, content written in elegant hand, some edgewear to laid-in leaf of notes. An interesting item. $1,500. * Joseph Smith was a town clerk in southern England. Carefully compiled in an elegant hand, his book of precedents consists mostly of indentures and articles of agreement. The first 181 leaves are numbered. There are a few blank leaves in the sequence and several un-numbered leaves at the rear of the book. The neat hand, which is free of corrections, numbered blank leaves and other blank leaves suggest this manuscript was an incomplete fair copy of a reference work. The laid-in notes are a biography of Smith by Smith-Stanier [1823-1911], a relative of Smith and notable English folklorist.

The History of America, in Two Books. Containing, I. A General History of America. II. A Concise History of the Late Revolution. Extracted from the American Edition of the Encyclopedia. The Second Edition.

Philadelphia: Printed by Thomas Dobson, M.DCC.XCV [1795]. 8vo, viii, 356 pp. Contemporary full calf, gilt-lettered maroon morocco label. Binding well rubbed but sound, endpapers excised, lacking the two maps, signature P starting, occasional light foxing, some marginal childish scribblings in pencil; a fair copy only, but with an important association. Second Edition; the first edition had appeared in 1790, and other editions were issued in 1798, 1808, & 1819. Signed at the top of the title-page by Artemas Ward (1727-1808), soldier, jurist, & politician. Despite his many achievements in these three fields, Ward is best-known for having been commander-in-chief of the Massachusetts militia at the time of the Battle of the Bunker Hill and for serving (briefly) under George Washington as second-in-command of the Continental Army. Ward was in ill health and at his headquarters in Cambridge during the battle, but he took his share of the criticism of American tactical blunders. (Fortunately the British committed comparable blunders of their own). When the enterprising Scottish-born publisher Thomas Dobson (1751-1823) set out to produce an American edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, he commissioned Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826), already famous for his American geographies, to write articles and biographies of American interest. The two parts of this book were preprinted from the American Encyclopaedia, which did not commence publication until 1798. Morse's 141-page General History of America is remarkably thorough in its discussion of the cultures of the Indians of North & South America. Morse was greatly interested in the American aborigines and devoted his later career to the study and care of them. In his description of the Battle in the 214-page section on the American Revolution Morse does not mention General Ward, but he does include him (as 'Artemus' Ward) in his list of Washington's chief officers on p. 195. Ward resigned from the army in 1777 but continued in public service until 1795. He made no annotations in this book, but a dog-eared page in the section describing the battle and its aftermath suggests that he at least glanced through it. Unfortunately, the book then fell into the hands of juveniles, who ripped out the maps and scribbled in it. Sabin 50937. OCLC: 8464076. Relatively uncommon in institutions (c.18) and none at Harvard where Ward was an alum and briefly a teacher. No auction records.

Prolegomena Ad Homerum Sive De Operum Homericorum Prisca Et Genuina Forma Variisque Mutationibus Et Probabili Ratione Emendand

Halle, Libraria orphanotrophei. (Buchhandlung im Waisenhaus). 1795. - 1. Band (mehr nicht erschienen). 8°. 3 n.n. Bl.,CCLXXX S. Pappband der Zeit mit rotem goldgeprägtem Rückenschild. Erste Ausgabe. "From antiquity, translators, scholars, and even regular readers of the Homeric poems, have detected numerous errors, narrative contradictions, and repetitions. They have also identified passages describing institutions and artifacts belonging to very different time periods. By the end of the eighteenth century, German scholars attempted to address these textual oddities by proposing that the poems were not the creation of a single individual but were the result of editing together separate tales composed by different poets. Led by Friedrich August Wolf (1759-1824), these so-called "analysts" believed that it was possible to identify the original tales that would eventually end up being part of the two poems. As explained in his influential Prolegomena, Wolf argued that the Iliad and Odyssey were composed around 950 B.C.E. and transmitted orally for four-hundred years until they were written down and, consequently, given a sense of artistic unity."
