        Skara stifts tidningar.

1793-1805. Skara, F. J. Lewerentz, 1793-1806. 8:o.

The United States of North America: with the British Territories and those of Spain, according to the Treaty, of 1784

[London]: Wm. Faden, Feby. 11th, 1793. Copper-engraved map, full period hand colouring. 24 1/2 x 35 1/8 inches. The extremely rare fifth issue of one of the most important early maps of the United States. Faden's sequence of maps of the United States represents one of the most important cartographic depictions of the newly independent republic. The present map is the fifth issue of the fourteen total appellations (including the parent plan and thirteen subsequent issues), and is one of the extremely rare first five appellations of this series. The Faden sequence comprises a critical and fascinating series of historical documents regarding the political development of the United States, especially since each issue captures a distinct stage in America's process of transformative change. The present map depicts the United States' boundaries as determined by the Treaty of 1784, when in actuality it is referring to the settlement agreed to at the signing of the Treaty of Paris on September 3rd, 1783, which ended the Revolutionary War. This treaty came into effect in April, 1784. The map is in part based on John Mitchell's A Map of the British and French Dominions in North America (1755) that was used by delegates during the treaty process. While the United States was granted a large territory from the Atlantic to the Mississippi River, and from the northern frontiers of Florida to the Canadian border, this map shows that the settled area of the nation was confined to the former Thirteen Colonies, and the two newly admitted states of Vermont (1791) and Kentucky (1792). Even then, the western boundaries of many of the states, past the Appalachians, are undefined. Although Washington, D.C. was in the process of being laid out, it was not yet built, and is absent from the map. One of the most interesting aspects of the map is its labeling of "Franklinia" or the "New State of Franklin." This refers to an attempt by settlers in the Great Smoky Mountains to secede from North Carolina and to form a new state. From 1785 to 1789, seven of the states of the Union endorsed the plan, but it failed to achieve the required two-thirds support to be admitted as a state at the Constitutional Convention. Various lands in Kentucky and the future Tennessee are shown to be reserved for war veterans from "Virginia" and "North Carolina." Another curious appearance is the name of "Indiana" in what is now West Virginia, but nowhere near the future state of that name. Various areas in the southern Midwest are shown to be owned by private land development companies including the "Wabash" and "Ohio" companies. One such enterprise was headed by "Colonel Simmes [sic]," John Cleves Symmes (1742-1814), an eccentric New Jersey magistrate who later wrote a book which theorized that the interior of the earth was both hollow and inhabitable, and could be entered through the poles. In the same treaty, Spain received possession of Florida from Britain, and the vast Louisiana Territory from France. In the north, although the treaty was supposed to have settled the boundary with Canada from the Great Plains to the Atlantic, a series of geographic misconceptions left the frontier in a nebulous state. Faden elected to present the extreme British conception of the border in northern Maine, and in the northwest, the border was supposed to run west to the source of the Mississippi, when in reality the source was located well to the south. The map also features "The Twenty Leagues Line" located off of the east coast that marked the exclusive maritime jurisdiction of the United States. The composition is completed by an especially finely engraved and coloured title cartouche which depicts scenes of commerce in the prosperous new nation. Stevens & Tree, "Comparative Cartography," 80e, in Tooley, The Mapping of America; not in Phillips, A List of Maps of America.

London: Published by William Ward, 1 January, 1793. Colour printed mezzotint with additional hand-colouring. In good condition with the exception of some small skillfully mended tears in the margins. 18 x 23 5/8 inches. 19 1/2 x 24 1/2 inches. An early Romantic view of rural life in England after a painting by 18th and 19th century master, James Ward. William Ward (1766-1826) colour mezzotint rendition of his brother James' painting, "Haymakers at Rest" is a superb example of the late 18th century, British genre print, which frequently depicted the lives of "ordinary" rural folk. The subjects in these images tend to be generic types, rather than individuals, and the activities frequently commonplace. There is no moral and barely a story: after having worked hard in the hot sun, the workers relax in the shade, so stunned by their fatigue they hardly speak or interact. The purpose and justification of the image is that it is a picture of "us", of life in the common, (for them) British identity, and the great human commonality we all share. James Ward was one of the most noted artists of his day, his individual style and superior skill distinguished him from his contemporaries, and his outstanding work influenced the development of British art. Considered to be one of the most important animal painters of his generation, Ward also produced portraits, landscapes, genre and history paintings. He began his career as an engraver, studying under his brother William, who later went on to engrave many of his paintings. The images produced from the pairing of William and James Ward epitomize the best of English art, their fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination combine to create enduring pictures that speak of the taste and beauty of the age. The work of James Ward is worthy of history's praise; it influenced the art of Delacroix and Géricault, and changed the face of British painting. This magnificent work is reminiscent of the genre paintings of George Morland who greatly influenced the work of James and William.         A Topographical Map of the North.n Part of New York Island, Exhibiting the Plan of Fort Washington, now Fort Knyphausen, Shewing the Several Attacks of the Royal Army

London:. 1793.. Important Revolutionary War era map, showing the attacks on the Patriots during the Battle of Fort Washington, New York by Hessian mercenaries & British forces, and considered the best contemporary plan of the Battle. From Charles Stedman's "History of the American War" and based on a map by Claude Joseph Sauthier. Faden was an important English cartographer and Geographer to King George III; he produced all the British maps of the American Revolution, including maps of the individual colonies, theaters of war, and battle plans, which were highly prized in Britain for their accuracy. This important map of the lower Hudson River (North River) and the current day borough of Manhattan centers on the island from 'Haerlem' and Snake Hill in the south to Tetard's Hill and 'Spiking Devil' in the north. A key at the right lists four attacks on Fort Washington, lettered A through D, with the first, Hessian troops under General Knyphausen; and the second and fourth the British under Matthews, Cornwallis and Percy. Fort Washington is visible at the center, as well as 'Fort Lee or Fort Constitution' directly across the river; these were the two forts intended to protect the lower Hudson from the British. However, Fort Washington fell on November 16, 1776, in a decisive victory for the combined British (under General Howe) and Hessian (under the command of Wilhelm von Knyphausen) forces; the remaining American troops were forced to escape across the Hudson to Fort Lee, which they later fled. Copper engraved map with slight offsetting, a short closed diagonal tear at the left margin, and a very short split at top center fold. 10" x 18 1/4" with original folds, in very good condition.

G.G.J. and J. Robinson London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of one of the most important political tracts of the 18th century. "The Enquiry was, and remained, the work by which [Godwin] was best known. It was one of the earliest, the clearest, and most absolute theoretical expositions of socialist and anarchist doctrine. Godwin believed that the motives of all human action were subject to reason, that reason taught benevolence, and that therefore all rational creatures could live in harmony without laws and institutions. Believing in the perfectibility of man, he thought that our virtues and vices may be traced to the incidents which make the history of our lives, and if these incidents could be divested of every improper tendency, vice would be extirpated from the world" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 234).London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1793. Quarto, early three-quarters vellum over marbled boards. Two volumes. Without half-titles. Internally clean, boards with minor wear. A very handsome copy in early vellum.

The Garnetts were an important family in Lancaster, and originally held the position of Official Forester of Lancaster. (British Authors Before 1800)., " In April 1793 Reeves completed his famous History of the government of the island of Newfoundland, the first comprehensive account of the island's past. In keeping with his own experience, he focused on "the struggles and vicissitudes of two contending interests. Ð The planters and inhabitants on the one hand, who, being settled there, needed the protection of a government and police, with the administration of justice: and the adventurers and merchants on the other; who, originally carrying on the fishery from this country, and visiting that island only for the season, needed no such protection for themselves, and had various reasons for preventing its being afforded to the others." The dialectic thus posed was to be examined over and over again in the historiography of Newfoundland. In 1978 Keith Matthews argued that Reeves's work, the "first published identification of the West Country merchants with villainy, had been read and broadly accepted by every recent historian." quoted from Peter Neary. Copies located in UBC, NFLD Art & Culture Centre, Acadia U, Queens U, RMC, LAC(3), LofParl., (2 copies), Bibliotheque de Montréal, and Bibliotheque et Archives nationales du Québec and British Library.         Radjah priant No. 2

[India: circa 1793]. Graphite and watercolour on wove paper, mounted to a larger sheet, 15 1/4 x 11 inches. An original watercolour study by Solvyns for his monumental work Les Hindous. "Sometime in 1793, though possibly earlier, Solvyns began work on what was to become his life consuming project, a collection of etchings portraying the Hindus in their costumes, occupations, and cultural life ... It was the most ambitious publishing venture yet undertaken in India ... For some time, Solvyns had wandered with his sketchbook through Calcutta and its environs, drawing Indians in their occupational pursuits, their festivals, and the rich diversity of their cultural lives. He drew their musical instruments, their boats, their carts, and their modes of smoking. With genuine curiosity and a keenly observant and sympathetic eye, Solvyns recorded an India few Europeans really saw" (Hardgrave). Solvyns, a Flemish artist, had arrived in India in 1790. He first proposed the project in February 1794, but did not complete the work until mid-November 1796. It was a massive project: purchasing and importing the copper plates, producing the thin hand-made paper for the etchings (the paper on which they are mounted being imported from Europe), etching and hand colouring, were all undertaken largely by Solvyns himself. "Indeed it was the most ambitious printing project undertaken in all India to that time" (Hardgrave). By 1803, Solvyns left India in dire financial straits, his publication nearly bankrupting him. After returning to Brussels, and subsequently moving to Paris, Solvyns began a new set of etchings after his original drawings. This reworking and rewriting took years, and it was not until 1808 that the first part of his new edition Les Hindous was published. Over the next four years it was issued in 48 parts with a total of 288 colour-printed plates, all beautifully finished by hand. The final result, of a quality to a more European standard than the Calcutta original, proved to be an influential model for the Company School of Indian artists during the 19th century who produced suites of drawings of occupations for the British serving in India. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a set of 248 original drawings by Solvyns (two images short of the complete Calcutta edition) believed to have been prepared by Solvyns for presentation. "For at least some of the subjects, Solvyns did more than one copy of the watercolor in preparation for the etchings, for in addition to the drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum, an album that Solvyn's widow, Marie Anne, presented in 1829 to a friend or patron of her husband contained a number of drawings, at various stages of completion, that were later fully realized in the etchings. The album ... contained 41 drawings, some fully complete and watercoloured; others were pencil sketch studies." The present watercolour is from that album. Titled in Solvyn's hand at the top "Radjah priant No. 2" the image was not included in the Calcutta edition, but would appear, reversed as usual (see Hardgrave), in the Paris edition, captioned Rajah Hindoo Prince at his Prayers. Hardgrave writes of this image: "The raja depicted is Ishwar Chandra of Nadia (1747-1802), who, like his grandfather, the famous Maharaja Krishna Chandra Roy, and many of the rajas of Nadia before him, was a Sanskrit scholar and patron of poets and religion. He became raja in 1788 and resided in Krishnagar, then a center of Sanskrit learning, the capital of Nadia and located about 60 miles north of Calcutta on the Hugli river" (Hardgrave, pp. 164-165). Solvyns here depicts the rajah kneeling in prayer on a tiger skin with a pothi (traditional unbound prayer book made of palm leaves) in front of him, with beads (rudraksas) adorning his arms, neck and head and a cloth (gomukha) covering his right arm. Hardgrave, A Portrait of the Hindus, pp.83-84 and 164-165 (the present watercolour illustrated on p. 84 and the finished etching from the Paris edition on the front cover).

He began to write idylls in poetic prose, beginning with Daphnis (1754). His Idyllen (1756) achieved a nation-wide success. In Der Tod Abels (1758) he attempted an epic in prose…In his idylls, Gessner, who is indebted to Theocritus and Virgil, creates an idealized, orderly, almost horticultural state of nature, from which everything rough and craggy has been eliminated; his shepherds are similarly untouched by the ruder aspects of country life. His work embodies the city-dweller’s longing for a nature which he does not know, and this explains its instant popularity” (The Oxford Companion to German Literature).Nicolas-André Monsiau (1754-1837) “was a Parisian who attained some reputation as a painter of both classical and modern subjects.         Aranei; or, A Natural History of Spiders, including the Principal Parts of.English Spiders, By Eleazar Albin, as also the Whole of..Sweedish Spiders by Charles Cler[c]k

London, 1793. 4to., 28 hand-coloured engraved plates by Basire, Carwitham and Smith, some heightened with gum arabic. [4], ii, 31, [1], 70 pages, including engraved title (lacking the frontispiece, light dampstaining in upper margin of plates, some spotting throughout, lacks the 2 numismatic plates). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, with intersecting rectangle and lozenge of blind ornamental rolls on covers, by Samuel Welcher, with his ticket. First edition. Martyn is probably best known for his celebrated work the "Universal Conchologist": "he purchased shells brought back from Cook's third voyage, although, as he wrote to Henry Seymer on 9 December 1780, 'I have purchased, amounting to 400 gns, more than 2 thirds of the whole brought home, Nevertheless I do not abound either in the variety of the new or many duplicates of the known ones that are valuable' (Dance, 100). He sold many of the shells, but the paucity of new species led him to modify his original plan to figure two different shells on each plate. Martyn sought to impose order on his subject: his Universal Conchologist bore the subtitle 'A new systematic arrangement by the author'. It had 160 hand-coloured plates, the whole being published in four folio volumes between 1784 and 1787, making it the greatest of all books on shells...Turning thereafter to insects, Martyn produced his "English Entomologist" (1792), followed by "Aranei, or, A Natural History of Spiders" (1793), a quarto in two parts. It included much of Eleazar Albin's well-known work on English spiders, Martyn having purchased Albin's drawings at the sale of the dowager duchess of Portland's museum. "Psyche: Figures of Non-Lepidopterous Insects" (1797) was probably produced privately and only about ten sets of its thirty-two stipple engravings are known to have been published. His only venture into botany, "Figures of Plants" (1795), consisted of forty-three coloured plates without text or captions" (Anita McConnell for DNB). Nissen ZBI 2724.
