        Meteorological Observations and Essays.

      - xvi, 208 pp. 8vo, somewhat later blue publisher’s cloth over boards, green paper label on spine, uncut. London: W. Richardson, 1793. First edition, first issue. "In this (his first) book, he enunciated the first statement of Dalton’s law of partial pressures. The foundation of the work was his pioneering daily record of temperature, pressure, wind, humidity, and rainfall over a five-year period. In these Essays he began to develop his atomic theory, which revolutionized chemistry. Only 149 names are given in the list of subscribers, and it is likely that very few more copies were printed for regular sale by booksellers."–Neville, I, p. 322. In the Essays, Dalton also included studies of the aurora, with accurate estimates of their heights, and a theory of trade winds, anticipated, unbeknownst to him, by George Hadley. A very fine uncut copy from the library of Haskell F. Norman with bookplate. This is an early example of publisher’s cloth. ? Smyth 1. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Printed for C. and G. Kearsley, 1793. n. Hardcover. 222 x 140 mm (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). With ads in volumes I and II. Three volumes. ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S BLUE BOARDS, original paper labels on spines, EDGES UNTRIMMED, VOLUMES II and III ENTIRELY UNOPENED. ESTC N8859. The inevitable bending and wear to corners, slight soiling and chafing to covers, two leaves with lower corner torn away (text not affected), a couple of trivial smudges internally, but A REMARKABLE SURVIVAL IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION, the original paper boards and spines with amazingly little wear, and the text showing almost no signs of use (two of the volumes, of course, not having ever been read). This splendidly preserved specimen allows the modern reader to see exactly what books looked like when they were issued before the advent of standardized publisher's cloth bindings in the 1830s. Up until that time, works were usually issued in some kind of temporary binding (paper boards, as here, being among the most typical), and the purchaser of such a volume would be expected to take his book to a binder, not infrequently at the same location as the printer or publisher, to have it bound to his specications. The present set never made it to the binder and, apart from a bit of dust, looks much as it did when the original buyer exited the publisher's premises. The text of this history is now usually attributed to Charles Hereford (b. 1758?), although earlier scholars suggested it might be the work of educational writer John Adams (1750?-1814), who had published an abridged version of Gibbon's "Decline and Fall" (a work listed here in the publisher's ads at the beginning of volume I). Gibbon is cited by our author as a main source, along with histories of Charles V and Philip II as well as Robertson's "History of America." Some copies of this work contain a folding map, but it is clear from descriptions of other copies that this is an optional extra; furthermore, a copy in paper covers would likely not have it, since it would be inserted when the binder put the volume in its permanent covers. Books from the 18th century in original boards are not common, and copies as well preserved as the present one are extremely rare.

Matthew Brown Ex Libris, June 11th 1793. Volume 1, Metaphysics.

June 14th - July 22nd 1793, [N.p.] - Small 4to. Autograph manuscript on laid paper, one volume only: (1), 298, (3) pp. (10 leaves blank, pencil notes in another hand on rear end-leaf). Matthew Brown's printed book label is affixed to the front pastedown. Laid in are 2 copies of an unidentified carte-de-visite (back-marked J.M. Scott, Vincennes, Indiana), a later (early 20th century?) photograph of an unidentified house, a clipped newspaper obituary (1818) for Brown's first wife Mary, and a monument-dedication pamphlet (1907) honoring his parents. Original full calf, rubbed, joints cracking, extremities chipped; spine label bearing the title "Lectures" partly eroded. Red-sprinkled edges darkened, end-leaves chipped at the edges; moderate foxing and a few pencil marginalia.Matthew Brown, first president of Washington College (1806-1817), later president of Jefferson College (1822-1845), two schools that merged after the Civil War, was a student at Dickinson College in 1793 when he wrote out these lectures so carefully. Following graduation in 1794, he taught a classical school, then studied and was licensed for the Presbyterian ministry. Among his students, one in particular recalled his being a fine speaker and teacher, particularly strong in metaphysics. He was awarded honorary degrees by Princeton, Hamilton, and Jefferson. A table of contents at the rear outlines the first 173 pages, from "Of Being in General" to "Heroes and Demigods"; headings and shoulder notes highlight topics in the text. (749)

Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester, Document Signed giving an account of money that is owed from October 25th to December 14th 1793

1793. No binding. Very Good. Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester, Document Signed. 4 pages, 8" x 12.25" and 1 page affixed to page three,of detailed accounts, dated, Quebec, October 28, 1793, giving an account of money that is owed from October 25th to December 14th 1793.Moderate soiling with tattered edges professionally repaired and minor browning, otherwise in very good condition. Exlibrary small stamp (W.C Putnam collection Davenport Public Museum) on p2, p4 and mounted insert pageon p3. Sir Guy Carleton served in America beginning in 1758. He was governor of Quebec and commander of British forces in Canada (1775-77), during which time he repelled Montgomery and Benedict Arnold's attack on Quebec, defeated Arnold on Lake Champlain and re-took Crown Point. From 1782-83 he was Commander in Chief in Canada. General in 1793.William Clement Putnam was born on June 26, 1862, in Davenport, Iowa, the city in which he spent his entire life. He was a voracious reader whose love of history was piqued early. At a young age, he began to collect pieces of local history, once commenting, "I have always had a great passion for old papers and autographs..." With his four brothers, he founded a historical society at the family's home of Woodlawn. He graduated from high school in 1880 with ambitions of becoming a lawyer, joining his father's law office for a time before heading off to law school at the University of Iowa. He returned to Davenport after graduation in 1883 and rejoined his father's firm as a partner in Putnam & Putnam. Business led him occasionally to New York City where he developed a deeper appreciation for art and literature. Now, with a steady income, he was better able to purchase the artifacts of history that he loved so well, amassing an amazing library of historical items, books of literature and science, art, music, and architecture. Tragically, W. C. became seriously ill (the first illness of any consequence in his life) and died within a few days, on January 13, 1906. He was not yet forty-four. Following his death, his collection was donated to the Davenport Academy of Sciences. quoted from Auction house write-up where this item was purchased.

(1791) is a biography of Dr. Samuel Johnson written by James Boswell. It is regarded as an important stage in the development of the modern genre of biography; many have claimed it as the greatest biography written in English. While Boswell's personal acquaintance with his subject only began in 1763, when Johnson was 54 years old, Boswell covered the entirety of Johnson's life by means of additional research. The biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life, as Boswell makes various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censors many comments. Regardless of these actions, modern biographers have found Boswell's biography as an important source of information on Johnson and his times. The work was popular among early audiences and with modern critics, but some of the modern critics believe that the work cannot be considered a proper biography. Background:James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck (29 October 1740 ?" 19 May 1795) was a lawyer, diarist, and author born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is best known for the biography he wrote of one of his contemporaries, the English literary figure Samuel Johnson, which the modern Johnsonian critic Harold Bloom has claimed is the greatest biography written in the English language.Samuel Johnson (18 September 1709 ?" 13 December 1784), often referred to as Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson.Condition:Conditions are Very Good/Excellent.  Small wear to edges, browned spines/leather, Ethel & George Booth (Artist?) bookplates; little spotting here or there, most pages/hinges/text block are very good/excellent for over 220 years old!!!

1793. In 8. Dim. 21,5x14 cm. Pp. 74+LXXX. Presenti dati editoriali a pag. XXXVI (Roma, presso Luigi Perego Salvioni). In buone condizioni. Very scarce editio princeps of the anti-revolutionary work dedicated to the death of Ugo Bassville written by Vincenzo Monti (1754-1828). Ugo Bassville went in Rome with the charge to negotiate the reopening of the diplomatic relations among the papal court and the revolutionary government of Paris. Unfortunately he was killed by roman inhabitants. Monti decided to write this work to justify the happening: he imagines that the soul of Bassville condamns the horrors of french revolution. The work was published for the first time totally anonymous in 1793 in pamphlets published in different periods, the same year was published the second roman edition and another edition. Editorial data are in page XXXVI (Roma, presso Luigi Perego Salvioni). This copy is totally equal to the editio princeps, but 4 not numbered pages are missing, that are the introductive pages to the chants of the work (e.g. third chant "gli altri di daranno in appresso"), pages that could seem insignificant from an editorial point of view and probably thrown by the ex owner. In this copy there is also the second strophe in pag. 23, verses missing in the second roman edition (in which the four numbered pages introductive to chants are missing). The last page LXXX finishes with a not complete sentence, but the work is complete from an editorial point of view, the complete writing will be published only in 1821. Manuscripted dedication in the internal part of front plate dated 1863. In good conditions. Scarce copy, high value. Soft cartonated cover with spien covered by paper in good general conditions slightly worn in the edges and spine. Binding in fair conditions with slight cracks. Inside pages are in good conditions with foxings. Worming in the folding edge of the whole volume with no loss of text.

A Topographical Map of the North.n Part of New York Island, Exhibiting the Plan of Fort Washington, now Fort Knyphausen, Shewing the Several Attacks of the Royal Army

London:. 1793.. Important Revolutionary War era map, showing the attacks on the Patriots during the Battle of Fort Washington, New York by Hessian mercenaries & British forces, and considered the best contemporary plan of the Battle. From Charles Stedman's "History of the American War" and based on a map by Claude Joseph Sauthier. Faden was an important English cartographer and Geographer to King George III; he produced all the British maps of the American Revolution, including maps of the individual colonies, theaters of war, and battle plans, which were highly prized in Britain for their accuracy. This important map of the lower Hudson River (North River) and the current day borough of Manhattan centers on the island from 'Haerlem' and Snake Hill in the south to Tetard's Hill and 'Spiking Devil' in the north. A key at the right lists four attacks on Fort Washington, lettered A through D, with the first, Hessian troops under General Knyphausen; and the second and fourth the British under Matthews, Cornwallis and Percy. Fort Washington is visible at the center, as well as 'Fort Lee or Fort Constitution' directly across the river; these were the two forts intended to protect the lower Hudson from the British. However, Fort Washington fell on November 16, 1776, in a decisive victory for the combined British (under General Howe) and Hessian (under the command of Wilhelm von Knyphausen) forces; the remaining American troops were forced to escape across the Hudson to Fort Lee, which they later fled. Copper engraved map with slight offsetting, a short closed diagonal tear at the left margin, and a very short split at top center fold. 10" x 18 1/4" with original folds, in very good condition.

Arthur, Attorney Gen. "is the handwritten note "Chief Justice of the King's Bench murdered by the Rebels in his carriage in the Streets of Dublin". All page edges "gilt"green-? , possibly oxidized copper/bronze gilding. Both volumes in nearly identical condition; light wear and soiling to boards, hinges firm but starting at leather gutters, spines have light surface cracks with wear at head and foot. 'given for the relief of poor prisoners'. Rare: with the fine frontispiece portrait by John Kay and an eight page appendix which prints several important facts relating to the trial, most notably the "Declaration of Mr Muir before the Sheriff", given on 2 January 1793.Ferguson knew only his own copy and that in the National Library, and he added the Allport copy for the appendix; moreover, if Ferguson's collation can be relied on, none of those copies has the 8 page appendix included here, although the Allport copy (not seen by us) does have a 16 page appendix but no frontispiece. The catalogue of the State Library of New South Wales also records two copies in the Dixson and Mitchell collections, nonetheless this edition is minimally represented in Australian public collections. This book was published is sympathy with the cause, the verso of the half-title reads as follows:'The following account of Mr Muir's Trial is not offered to the Public from the view of obtaining any pecuniary advantage to the Publisher. The profits were left to be disposed of in any charitable manner which Mr Muir might direct; and he has desired them to be given for the relief of poor prisoners'.
