Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester, Document Signed giving an account of money that is owed from October 25th to December 14th 1793

1793. No binding. Very Good. Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester, Document Signed. 4 pages, 8" x 12.25" and 1 page affixed to page three,of detailed accounts, dated, Quebec, October 28, 1793, giving an account of money that is owed from October 25th to December 14th 1793.Moderate soiling with tattered edges professionally repaired and minor browning, otherwise in very good condition. Exlibrary small stamp (W.C Putnam collection Davenport Public Museum) on p2, p4 and mounted insert pageon p3. Sir Guy Carleton served in America beginning in 1758. He was governor of Quebec and commander of British forces in Canada (1775-77), during which time he repelled Montgomery and Benedict Arnold's attack on Quebec, defeated Arnold on Lake Champlain and re-took Crown Point. From 1782-83 he was Commander in Chief in Canada. General in 1793.William Clement Putnam was born on June 26, 1862, in Davenport, Iowa, the city in which he spent his entire life. He was a voracious reader whose love of history was piqued early. At a young age, he began to collect pieces of local history, once commenting, "I have always had a great passion for old papers and autographs..." With his four brothers, he founded a historical society at the family's home of Woodlawn. He graduated from high school in 1880 with ambitions of becoming a lawyer, joining his father's law office for a time before heading off to law school at the University of Iowa. He returned to Davenport after graduation in 1883 and rejoined his father's firm as a partner in Putnam & Putnam. Business led him occasionally to New York City where he developed a deeper appreciation for art and literature. Now, with a steady income, he was better able to purchase the artifacts of history that he loved so well, amassing an amazing library of historical items, books of literature and science, art, music, and architecture. Tragically, W. C. became seriously ill (the first illness of any consequence in his life) and died within a few days, on January 13, 1906. He was not yet forty-four. Following his death, his collection was donated to the Davenport Academy of Sciences. quoted from Auction house write-up where this item was purchased.

        Meteorological observations and essays

London: Richardson, Phillips, Pennington, 1793 Text woodcut and tables. Contemporary calf, rebacked; small tear in title page repaired and title and last printed leaf repaired in the margin, some minor browning to first and last leaves, and occasional spotting. otherwise a solid copy. Some contemporary annotations. First edition, first issue of the author's first published book. This work contains the first tentative germs of the laws of partial pressures and of gaseous expansion under constant pressure. It was Dalton's initial approach to his chemical atomic theory and the basis of his greatest work, A new system of chemical philosophy (1808-27). Dalton independently detected the magnetic relations of the Aurora Borealis, concluding auroral light to be of purely electrical origin. Dalton (1766-1844) devoted many hours to compiling meteorological records and to the construction of thermometers, barometers, rain gauges, and hygrometers. He was a member of the Royal Society and a corresponding member of the French Academy.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas Ruben Turner Deputy Sherriff . . . Anthony Thornton (sheriff) . . . hath taken the body of the above bound George Washington by virtue of a writ to him directed and Lawrence Berry became his bail for his appearance at the District Court to be held at the Courthouse in the Town of . . . the 29th day of April next now if the above bound George Washington that makes his personal appearance on the above mentioned . . . then and there to answer Rodham Kenner of a plea of Trespass assault & battery damage two thousand pounds. Then the other obligation to be paid otherwise to remain in full . . . & virtue."" The document is signed Geo. Washington (seal), Law. Barry (seal) ""signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of John G. Cattin."" Little can be found regarding Rodham Kenner but the Kenner mentioned could be Rodham Kenner II, a sporting youth who indulged in drinking in betting during a time when gambling was forbidden. And interesting story about Rodham Kenner II dates back to when his father, George died a wealthy man in 1772. Rodham's Mother, Margaret remarried to a man named John Dugard, an adventurer who recently moved to Virginia from Baltimore. The marriage displeased Rodham and when his parents cut his allowance putting a crimp in his betting and drinking,. Rodham took a trip to Baltimore to see what he could dig up on his step-father. Turns out, Dugard already had a wife in Maryland when he married Margaret. Rodham returned home with the affidavits to prove his findings and Dugard was convicted of bigamy. Dugard refused to accept his conviction and employed Patrick Henry to appeal his case to the General Court. The appeal was successful and Dugard returned to Virginia a free man but he refused to pay Henry for his services. Henry turned on Dugard and saved the family fortune for Rodham. Rodham Kenner, II, later became a naval officer aboard the Proctor and the Dragon during the Revolutionary War. District Courts in Virginia were created to relieve the General Court of the backlog of common law cases. District Courts were established in 18 Virginia locations and the district of Kentucky in 1789. Each district was comprised of several counties and was held twice a year in each district. General Court judges presided over the District Courts. The court for the district of Spotsylvania included Spotsylvania, Caroline, King George, Stafford, Orange, Culpeper and Counties. District Courts were abolished in 1808 and replaced by Superior Courts."

Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester, Document Signed giving an account of money that is owed from October 25th to December 14th 1793

1793 - Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester, Document Signed. At a young age, he began to collect pieces of local history, once commenting, "I have always had a great passion for old papers and autographs." With his four brothers, he founded a historical society at the family's home of Woodlawn.

Paper covered wax seal. 6) Autograph letter signed from Samuel Eliot to David Townsend, thanking him for sending a copy of his pamphlet "which as far as I can judge must be greatly serviceable to the manufacturing & commercial interests of the State." 29 May 1796. 1 p. Scarce early American work on the manufacture of potash with an interesting related archive of manuscript material concerning the author, including a document signed by John Hancock. In the mid-18th century, the manufacture of potash became a burgeoning cottage industry. Potash, a mineral rich substance derived from leeching, boiling and distilling burned out ashes from wood and plants, was used extensively in the colonies to make soap, glass and gunpowder and was also an important fertilizer. In 1790, the very first U.S. patent was issued to Samuel Hopkins for an improved furnace in manufacturing potash, attesting to its importance. The United States would be the world's leading producer of potash into the mid-19th century. This rare pamphlet by Townsend, the Inspector of Pot and Pearl Ashes for Massachusetts, reviews the various manufacturing processes in the early period. Townsend graduated from Harvard College in 1770 and studied medicine under General Joseph Warren. At the Battle of Bunker Hill, he accompanied Warren as surgeon in Bunner's regiment. During the war, he was commissioned surgeon to the sixth regiment of foot, commanded by Colonel Asa Whitcomb and later was senior surgeon to the General Hospital, Northern department. He served with the Continental army under Washington during the harsh winter at Valley Forge. On October 9, 1781, he was made surgeon-general of the hospital department. For many years and up to the time of death he was physician in charge of the U. S. Marine Hospital in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Dr. Townsend was an active member of the Massachusetts Medical Society from 1785 to 1824, when he retired. Following the Revolution, Townsend was one of the charter members of the Society of the Cincinnati, being secretary of the Massachusetts chapter from 1817 to 1821, vice-president from 1821 to 1825 and president from 1825 to 1829.         Meteorological Observations and Essays

xvi, 208 pp. 8vo, somewhat later blue publisher's cloth over boards, green paper label on spine, uncut. London: W. Richardson, 1793. First edition, first issue. "In this (his first) book, he enunciated the first statement of Dalton's law of partial pressures. The foundation of the work was his pioneering daily record of temperature, pressure, wind, humidity, and rainfall over a five-year period. In these Essays he began to develop his atomic theory, which revolutionized chemistry. Only 149 names are given in the list of subscribers, and it is likely that very few more copies were printed for regular sale by booksellers."-Neville, I, p. 322. In the Essays, Dalton also included studies of the aurora, with accurate estimates of their heights, and a theory of trade winds, anticipated, unbeknownst to him, by George Hadley. A very fine uncut copy from the library of Haskell F. Norman with bookplate. This is an early example of publisher's cloth. ❧ Smyth 1. .
