Philadelphia Area: Manuscripts accounts including the delivery of food and wood for a canal started by the Delaware and Schuylkill Navigation Company. "For the use of the Delaware and Schuykill Canal Company" Contains 16 pages of manuscript. Dates 1792-1793 John Jacobs The Delaware and Schuylkill Navigation Company was incorporated in 1792 to open a canal alongside the Schuylkill River from Philadelphia seventeen miles to Norristown, Pennsylvania. This initiative, led by Robert Morris, was likely the first public canal project in the United States. It was also part of an unrealized plan to bring fresh water from the Schuylkill River to Philadelphia. The first water system in Philadelphia was proposed by the Delaware and Schuylkill Canal Company whose 1792 charter included the right to supply water to the city of Philadelphia. The canal was hand-dug, Work on the canal was suspended when investors in the Delaware and Schuylkill Canal company lost faith in the project and the company's assets plummeted. The company went bankrupt in the mid-1790s, after spending about $220,000. However, occasional work on the canal reportedly occurred as late as 1798. The Delaware and Schuylkill Navigation Company merged in 1811 to form the Union Canal Company for the purpose of building an east-west canal through Pennsylvania. Sampling of names: John Jacobs, James Lindsay, Jacob Pike, Thomas Lincoln, Matthias Pennebaker, Patience Matson, Joseph Ellis, Joseph Stapleton, Joseph Cooke, Thomas Lightfoot, John Heacock, Thomas Paschall, George Scott, William Allen, Edward Thomas, Christopher Rittenh … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOSWELL, George]
Five folding engraved plates. xvi, 134 pp., one leaf of directions to the binder. 8vo, cont. calf, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: J. Debrett, 1792. Third edition, enlarged, of this work specifically on the cultivation of water meadows, first published in 1779. "Francis Forbes had recommended water meadows and had given some instruction how to make and manage them, and several other previous writers had done the same, while the actual practice had been fairly common in parts of Wiltshire and Berkshire, Gloucester and Dorset for at least two centuries...The methods of construction and management were only to be found, of course, by seeking through a mass of general information, and some one came to the conclusion that a specific treatise on the subject was necessary. A suggestion was made to George Boswell of Piddletown, Dorset, a local expert, that he should write such a book."-Fussell, II, p. 121. In the present edition Boswell vigorously replies to criticisms levelled at him by the Rev. Thomas Wright in his pamphlet An Account of the Advantage and Method of Watering Meadows (1789). A very fine copy.

HOLBACH (Paul Thiry, baron d')

Small octavo (138 x 98 mm). Contemporary Italian brown morocco, spine gilt in compartments, sides bordered in gilt with Greek key and flower head rolls, decorative tools at inside corners, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. A little rubbing, endpapers stuck down, some spotting, a very good copy. First edition printed with the types of Bodoni; first published in two parts at Naples in 1780-86. "A Neapolitan general, Vicenzo Imperiale... presents La Faoniade: Inni ed odi di Saffo as a translation of a previously unknown work by Sappho, newly discovered in true Ossianic fashion by 'the famous Russian scholar Ossur,' who was visiting Cape Leukas and found some papyri in a stone box … When Imperiale presents what he claims to be 'the only complete work we have of Saffo' (xv), he is attempting to replace the Sappho corpus with a 'faoniade', an epic poem to the glories of Aphrodite's fickle boatman. The Faoniade is actually a collection of poems, all of them about Sappho's love for Phaon, 'hymns' addressed less frequently to the gods than to the physical beauty of the perfect young male" (Joan DeJean, Fictions of Sappho, 1546-1937, University of Chicago Press, 1989). This hero-worship was characteristic of the "Napoleonic" fictions of Sappho that multiplied at this time, transferring power from Sappho to Phaon, or some other man. London: Joseph Johnson, 1792. unbound. very good(+). William Blake. Etching and engraving. 10.25" x 7.75". Shows light toning and minor foxing at edges, otherwise in very good condition. A plate from John Gabriel Stedman's "Narrative of a Five Years' Expedition against the Revolted Slaves of Surinam" (London: Joseph Johnson, 1796). This book, with its graphic depiction of slavery and colonization in the New World, became an important reference for early abolitionists. This disturbing image shows a man impaled by a hook and hanging from a gallows. A human skull and bones occupy the foreground, and the background shows two skulls on sticks and a three-masted ship. William Blake (1757-1827) was a British poet, painter, and printmaker.

CHAPPELL, EDWARD.
1792. Sabin 12006 (2 plates and 1 map); cf. W.H. Whiteley, "CHAPPELL, EDWARD," in: Dictionary of Canadian biography IX. First edition of a travel account describing Newfoundland, the Saint Lawrence River, Labrador, and the surrounding areas, the Indian and Eskimo inhabitants and the natural history of the region, by Lieutenant Edward Chappell (1792-1861). "[Chappell] joined the sloop of war Rosamond, which sailed to Newfoundland in 1813 and Hudson Bay in 1814 to patrol the British North American fisheries. During these voyages he recorded his observations in two journals, which were later published as Voyage of his majesty's ship Rosamond to Newfoundland and the southern coast of Labrador and Narrative of a voyage to Hudson's Bay. In the first of these journals Chappell described the summer cruise of 1813 in Newfoundland and Labrador waters, at a time when almost everyone lived along the coastline and by means of the fishery. After reaching St John's at the end of May the Rosamond sailed around the south and west coasts of Newfoundland on her way to guard the fisheries on the Labrador coast, returning by the same route in autumn, and left St John's for England in December. During this voyage Chappell noted the isolated settlements of whites, Indians, and Inuit (Eskimos) on the west coast of Newfoundland and the coast of Labrador; the crowded streets and lively social life of St John's at the end of the fishing season; and extraordinary natural features, such as the unusual castle-like rock formations of Chateau Bay in the Strait of Belle Isle (Dictionary of Canadian biograp … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, John. Wilmington, NC Merchant - Collection of various Legal Papers, ca. 1792. John London (1747-1816) was a colonial officer, merchant and banker in Wilmington, NC. Being a Loyalist during the Revolution, he has an interesting story that most are unfamiliar with, thus I've included a few snippets below, which came from www.NCPedia.org: "John London returned to America on 25 September 1777, landing in New York. Two months later he and Samuel Cornell, a fellow Loyalist from North Carolina, arrived at New Bern in the brig Edwards. They requested permission from Governor Richard Caswell to come ashore to settle their private business under a flag of truce secured from General Henry Clinton for this purpose. Permission to land was granted, but they were instructed not to "proceed further into the Town, than Mr. Cornell's dwelling House." Caswell ordered them to return to New York on the Edwards by 29 December, stipulating that "Mr. London is permitted to take with him his two servants." London did not go to New York but went to Wilmington instead, having received permission from the governor who placed him under parole and limited his movements to the bounds of New Hanover County. Bergeron 1792 / 1796, Paris. [Click Below for Full Description]

CATHERINE II (the Great, 1729-1796, Empress of Russia from 1762)
Fine decree document, in Russian with translation signed 'Ekaterina' to "the Office for Constructing Our Houses and Gardens", appointing Major-General Ivan Libgard to a post there, 1 side folio, no place, 22nd January Catherine was the wife of Peter III, the heir to the Russian throne, but she soon quarrelled with her husband and became notorious for her love affairs with Gregory Orlov and then Stanislaw Augustus Poniatowski. When Peter III acceded to the throne in 1762 she was banished until Peter was dethroned by a conspiracy and Catherine became Empress. A few days afterwards Peter was murdered by Orlov and others. Catherine carried on the government with great energy and the dominions and power of Russia rapidly increased. When there was discontent the young Prince Ivan, hope of the disaffected, was murdered in the castle of Schlüsselburg. From that time internal politics consisted of court intrigues for and against one favourite or another. Grigori Potemkin was the best known, among other things he chose lovers for the Empress and arranged for them to be vetted for her by 'proveurs'. The first partition of Poland in 1772 and the Turkish War of 1774 vastly increased the Empire, as did a war with Sweden in 1790 and another Turkish War in 1792. The triumphs of her reign were completed with the 2nd and 3rd partitions of Poland and the incorporation of Courland into Russia (Translation)We Most Graciously Command Engineer the Major-General Ivan Libgard to assist at this office. [Signed] Catherine. 22nd January 1792

This covers the whole route including the extra section. There are 90 separate full page maps in pen and ink with later pencilled notes. There are also a few coloured overlays done on tracing paper. Bound in half straight-grained black morocco, gilt with a leather title piece to upper board. Rubbed and worn to extremities but the binding is sound. The Wyrley & Essington Canal (known as The Curly Wyrley) was built in the 1790s following an Act authorising a canal from Wolverhampton to the collieries at Wyrley Bank and Essington. William Pitt was appointed engineer. The canal company later secured a further Act that enabled them to extend the line to Brownhills and then descend through 30 locks to Huddlesford on the Coventry Canal, plus the Daw End Branch to the Hay Head Limeworks and a short branch to Lord Haye's quarries.Major traffic on the Wyrley & Essington was coal from the Cannock pits. Boats were gauged for toll purposes at a number of narrows formed by islands in the canal, several of which had characteristic octagonal toll offices. In deciding what route a canal was to follow, its chief engineer first needed to undertake a preliminary survey of the area, for most canals were built in an age before reliable maps were generally available, they had therefore to be … [Click Below for Full Description]
