NEDERLANDSE ZENDELINGEN IN INDONESI??Nederlandsch Oost-Indi? en het Nederlandsch Zendelinggenootschap. (1792-1872.)? Zo werden er drukkerijen o.a. in … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOSWELL, James
Dublin: John Chambers, 1792. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "I hate mankind, for I think myself one of the best of them, and I know how bad I am." ― Samuel Johnson Samuel Johnson was a famous English writer and scholar most known for his 'Dictionary of the English Language' as well as a collection of biographical accounts of eminent English poets. In the mid-1700s, Johnson met James Boswell, a Scottish biographer who wrote an extensive biography of Johnson, which, according to several experts, is the greatest biography in any language! This 1792 1st Dublin edition was set up from the first London edition and incorporating corrections to some of the errata, but introducing other errors, and though undertaken for the same group of booksellers, the task of printing was doled out to three separate printers, with consequent variations in the imprint. Thus while vol. 1 was printed by John Chambers, vol. 2 was printed by John Ershaw, and vol. 3, by Robert Rhames. An unusually nice set of this edition, noted by Pottle as "cheaply and rather poorly printed, evidently to undersell the genuine edition, which must, however, have been nearly, if not quite, exhausted when it appeared. It is now listed by the booksellers as 'very rare', which is perhaps justified, as there is no copy in the British Museum, the Bodleian, or the National Library of Scotland" - Pottle. As this edition predated the second London edition by almost a year, its appearance had, no doubt, a considerably greater effect on the sales of that edition than it ha … [Click Below for Full Description]

1792. Extremely rare and significant work with a wealth of documentation on cultural, political, and religious affairs of Saint-Domingue (Haiti) during the last quarter of the 18thcentury. Several parts are devoted to the African slaves. Only edition published 1792 in Avignon amid the French and Haitian Revolutions. No copies located in public libraries according to WorldCat. Not in Sabin. Comprehensive four volume set by a Capuchin missionary. The author, Father Irenée from Dijon, was at the time the apostolic vice-perfect of the Capuchin mission at Cap-François in Saint-Domingue. Contents include catechism for the African slaves and colonists, mass and hymns for African slaves, psalms to be chanted at the "dependence du Cap". Sections such as "Petit Catéchisme des Negres", are solely devoted to the religious instruction of African slaves. The set incorporates a chapter titled, "Cantiques a L'Usage des Negres", with hymns to be sung by the slaves of African descent of the island. The work also transcribes letters sent by the Capuchin mission in Saint-Domingue to the Governor and other officials, the "announcement of the colonial assembly in 1790", discourses delivered at the colony during festivities and special occasions (such as the one pronounced in 1784 at the marriage of Celeste d'Alcourt de Belzun,a rich heiress native of the island, with Count Francesco Maria Broglia, Italian noble member of the Order of Malta), the services held on the anniversary of the death of King Louis XV, the sermons and hymns chanted for the coronation of Louis XVI, among others. A short conspectus of his lectures was published in 1761, and the Institutes in 1769. The present work represents Ferguson's mature reworking of his lectures, prepared following his retirement. The lectures were very popular not only with students but with members of the Edinburgh intelligentsia. It was also one of about a dozen books by Scottish authors (of a total of 550) that James Madison selected for importation into America in 1782 for the library of the U.S. Congress.

Alexander Hamilton
Philadelphia: Mathew Carey. Alexander Hamilton - REPORT ON THE SUBJECT OF MANUFACTURES 1792 - MATHEW CAREY. This is a disbound section of Mathew Carey's The American Museum which has the June 1792 issue and the three Appendices for the first half of the year. The June issue has an essay by James Madison titled Property, which was originally published in Philip Freneau's National Gazette on March 29th, 1792. It is one of 18 essays that Madison published in the National Gazette between 1791 - 1792. Appendix 2 has a very early printing of Alexander Hamilton's Report on the Subject of Manufactures. Other than the scarce folio printing by Childs and Swaine and contemporary newspaper printings, this is the only other American printing of the Report prior to 1809 that I know of. There was a Dublin printing in 1792 and a London printing in 1793. Mathew Carey printed the Report in The American Museum from January to March 1792. The Report is complete in 51 pages. There are a six pages of poetry erroneously bound in between pages 48 and 49 of the Report. This is likely due to contemporary binding error when the magazine parts were combined into a semi-annual volume. The poetry is from the March issue, and that is the issue in which Carey printed the final three pages of Hamilton's Report, pp. 49-51. The appendix also includes a printing of Hamilton's Report on the Excise Law dated March 5th, 1792. Other notable documents are included as well. The pages are untrimmed. Some of the original printed spine cloth and paper label is present. A very nice and obtainable copy of Hamilton's Rep … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOSWELL, James
Dublin: John Chambers, for, R. Cross, W. Wilson, P. Bryne, A. Grueber, J. Moore, J. Jones, W. McKenzie, W. Jones, R. McAllister, R. Whit, 1792. 1792 1st Life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell FAMOUS English Biography 3v SET"I hate mankind, for I think myself one of the best of them, and I know how bad I am." ― Samuel JohnsonSamuel Johnson was a famous English writer and scholar most known for his 'Dictionary of the English Language' as well as a collection of biographical accounts of eminent English poets. As this edition predated the second London edition by almost a y … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Burns, James Johnson
Edinburgh: James Johnson, 1792. A rare and important ROBERT BURNS FIRST EDITION: The Scots Musical Museum The Scots Musical Museum Humbly dedicated to the Catch Club instituted at Edinr. June 1771, by James Johnson. Vols 1 to 4 bound in one, circa 1792 - 1796. 8vo (218 x 132 mm), engraved throughout. Title page vignettes second state, with thistles. Imprint: EdinB printed and sold by JOHNSON & Co Music Sellers, head of Lady Stairs Close Lawn Market, where may be had variety of Music and Musical Instruments, Instruments Lent out, Tun'd and Repaired This title page imprint first appeared on vol IV, published in 1792, and then again on vol V, published in 1796. As each of the title pages on this vol I - IV set bears this imprint it likely dates to between 1792 and 1796. Binding: The binding is contempory half calf with marbled paper boards. While very worn, it should be noted that it is unusual to find these books in contemporary bindings. As 'pocketbooks' they were subjected to hard usage and frequently rebound, often in serviceable (and ugly) 20th century library cloth bindings. Also, the wear on the spine and boards has formed quite a beautiful patina. The spine is divided into six bands by single and double gilt rules (very worn) with the worn gilt text 'Musical Museum' appearing in the second band. The book is protected in a bespoke archival clamshell box. Condition: The pages are in good order, with all present and in acceptable condition (it is possible that two blank endpapers to the front of the book have been removed). Foxing and yellowing in places. The stitching is … [Click Below for Full Description]

DUPONT DE NEMOURS, Pierre Samuel.
Paris: de l'imprimerie de Du Pont, [1792]. Octavo (194 x 123 mm). Contemporary marbled calf, red morocco spine label, compartments formed by gilt Greek key and dotted rolls with floral centre-tools gilt, geometric gilt panel to boards, multicoloured marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled blue. Early inscription to front free endpaper verso, "no. 697 de mon catalogue", and a few small ink marks to half-title, neat pencil annotations to pages 53, 103. Extremities lightly rubbed with a few spots of wear to corners and upper board, contents occasionally spotted with some very faint dampstain to lower fore edges, otherwise a very good copy. Engraved vignette title pages for Philosophie de l'univers and Oromasis, tailpieces. First edition of Dupont's "treatise attempting to state a philosophy of life" (Saricks) dedicated to his long-time friend Lavoisier, in an attractive contemporary binding. "From the dates given at the beginning of the book, the Philosophie de l'univers was apparently written between December 20, 1792, and June 10, 1793. With the Philosophie, Du Pont included the Oromasis, a prose-poem which, according to his statement in the preface, was written while he was concealed in the Observatory after August 10. Although of inferior quality, this little work displays the same sublime optimism which Condorcet was able to muster in somewhat similar circumstances while composing his famous essay on human progress The basis of his 'philosophy of the universe' is that nothing is done by chance. Providential laws direct the whole universe, as accords with good physiocratic doct … [Click Below for Full Description]
