Robert Burns, James Johnson
A rare and important ROBERT BURNS FIRST EDITION: The Scots Musical Museum The Scots Musical Museum Humbly dedicated to the Catch Club instituted at Edinr. June 1771, by James Johnson. Vols 1 to 4 bound in one, circa 1792 - 1796. 12MO. Title page vignettes second state, with thistles. Imprint: EdinB printed and sold by JOHNSON & Co Music Sellers, head of Lady Stairs Close Lawn Market, where may be had variety of Music and Musical Instruments, Instruments Lent out, Tun'd and Repaired This title page imprint first appeared on vol IV, published in 1792, and then again on vol V, published in 1796. As each of the title pages on this vol I - IV set bears this imprint it likely dates to between 1792 and 1796. Binding: The binding is contempory half calf with marbled paper boards. While very worn, it should be noted that it is unusual to find these books in contemporary bindings. As 'pocketbooks' they were subjected to hard usage and frequently rebound, often in serviceable (and ugly) 20th century library cloth bindings. Also, the wear on the spine and boards has formed quite a beautiful patina. The spine is divided into six bands by double gilt rules (very worn) with the worn gilt text 'Musical Museum' appearing in the second band. The book is protected in a bespoke archival clamshell box. Condition: The pages are in good order, with all present and in acceptable condition (it is possible that two blank endpapers to the front of the book have been removed). Foxing and some staining in places. The stitching is loose, and for this reason the book requires careful handling. Please ins … [Click Below for Full Description]

ELLICOTT, Andrew (1754 – 1820).
Engraved by J. Thackara & J. Vallance: Philidelphia, 1792. Single sheet; full margins with the plate mark (12 ¼ x 15 ¼ inches sheet; 22 x 25 inches framed) (General age tone, light staining in margin). FIRST PRINTED EDITION OF L’ENFANT PLAN This excellent rare map portrays the final version of Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s plan of the City of Washington; and it is one of the EARLIEST printed maps of Washington D.C. It is now known as the official city plan. Andrew Ellicott was an U.S. surveyor who helped map many of the territories west of the Appalachians; surveyed the boundaries of the District of Columbia; and continued and completed Pierre L’Enfant’s work on the plan on Washington DC. He also served as a teacher in survey methods to Meriwether Lewis. Ellicott was born into a small Quaker family in rural Pennsylvania. When the Revolutionary War broke out, he enlisted as a commissioned officer in the Elk Ridge Battalion of the Maryland militia despite his Quaker upbringing. During the course of the war, he rose to the rank of major, a title he would keep as an honorific throughout his life. After the war, Ellicott returned home until he was appointed, in 1784, a member of the survey group tasked with extending the survey of the Mason-Dixon line that had been abandoned in 1767 and then been stalled during the war. In this survey, he worked alongside David Rittenhouse and James Madison, making first connections with the scientific society of Philadelphia. When he was well into his career around 1791–92, Ellicott also surveyed the future city of Washington, which was located wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

PHILLIPS, Catharine.
PHILLIPS, Catharine. Reasons why the People Called Quakers Cannot so Fully Unite with the Methodists, in their Missions to the Negroes in the West India Islands and Africa. London, James Phillips and George Yard, 1792. 8vo. 20th-century three-quarter calf over cloth-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt; pp. 22, [2, publisher's catalogue]; a little browning or spotting in places.Very rare first edition. 'Catherine Payton Phillips (16 March 1727 - 16 August 1794), a Quaker minister and writer. She also campaigned for greater representation of women within the formal structure of the Religious Society of Friends, which eventually resulted in the establishment of Women's Yearly Meeting in 1784' (Library of Birmingham, online). She travelled almost 9000 miles in America between 1753 and 1756, thus observing the situaltion of the African slaves and debating the positions of the dissenting faith communities in North America. In this missive, which was published in Philadelphia as well, she expresses her disdain for the baptism of infants, which is carried out among the African American slaves. 'Throughout the New Testament we do not find any precept or example for infant baptism. But alas! The poor negroes must be taught, that it is necessary for their children to be sprinkled (baptised they are not) for, dying without it, their souls are not safe' (p. 17).ESTC T84250; Sabin 62475.#2097696

WOLLSTONECRAFT, Mary
First German edition of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). The translator was G.F.C. Weissenborn, but the work was published and edited by Christian Gotthilf Salzmann (1744–1811), founder of the Schnepfenthal institution, a school dedicated to progressive modes of education derived chiefly from the ideas of Rousseau. His main book was Moralisches Elementarbuch. This 'domestic history' whose episodes were designed for the instruction of both children and parents, first came to the attention of Mary Wollstonecraft in 1789. Finding Salzmann's views very close to those which were then developing in her own mind, she secured a German grammar, and set about producing an English version, which duly appeared in two volumes in 1790 as Elements of Morality. No correspondence survives between Salzmann and Wollstonecraft, but it has long been recognised that Salzmann was pleased by the English text. He subsequently published this translation of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, with a preface and notes; he also produced a German version of Godwin's Memoirs. Exceedingly uncommon. Windle A5v. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes, 12mo, xx, [iv], 336; vi, 393 pp., contemporary half calf, spines gilt-ruled, sides rubbed, spine labels missing, title-pages with stamps and early inscriptions, worming in lower margins of vol. II, mostly limited to a single hole in the extreme inner margin, but extending into the lower part of the text in the last forty leaves, some waterstaining, mainly confined to the margins but affecting text on a few leaves in vol. I. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Clark I:229 William Eddis was a Maryland Loyalist who arrived at Annapolis on 3 September 1769 from an unknown English port to begin work as secretary to Robert Eden, governor of Maryland, As secretary Eddis acquired an intimate knowledge of the province and became a deeply interested spectator as events led to the early stages of the Revolution. He traveled throughout Maryland and met many of its prominent families. His letters to friends in England "cover a wide range of subjects, including the personality of the governor, his daily custom, the political disposition of the people." (DAB). In 1772 Eddis was appointed a commissioner of the loan office; he also served as surveyor of the customs at Annapolis. Eddis was anxious for the entire repeal of the Townsend revenue acts to help restore cordial relations between England and the colonists. "He did not deny that the grievances of the colonists were genuine but contended that the measures adopted to obtain redress were not justified on 'priciples of reason or sound policy.' New Hampshire
Dover: E. Ladd, 1792. 31, [1 blank] pp. Stitched, untrimmed. Wrapper remnant in blank margin of title page. Very Good. Contemporary signature of Thos. Stow Ranney, Esqr. A scarce piece in the puzzle that finally became the New Hampshire Constitution, after serial submissions to the voters of that State. The Convention notes here that, in the most recent vote, "many articles are approved by two thirds of the voters; and many are not approved, by reason whereof said amendments are rendered inconsistant, and contradictory." With this pamphlet, the Convention tries to get it right. One interesting provision permits only Protestants to stand for election to the State Senate. According to NAIP, printing began in Dover in 1791, with six imprints; Wemyss dates Dover printings from 1790. Evans 24577. 166 Eberstadt 97. Bristol B8079. NAIP w036223 [8].
