[WOLLSTONECRAFT, Mary.]
Dublin: Printed for J. Jones, 1792. Dublin: Printed for J. Jones,, 1792. with conversations, calculated to regulate the affections and form the mind to truth and goodness. Duodecimo (170 x 97 mm). Contemporary sheep, red morocco label, spine ruled in gilt. Extremities and joints professionally refurbished, discreet paper repair to front free endpaper, light running stain in bottom corner, some foxing, else a very good copy. First Dublin edition, the fourth overall, first published in London in 1788. With two pleasing female gift inscriptions, the first on the half-title dated 1792 from Elizabeth Pim to Anne Jackson, who in turn re-presented the book half a century later in 1842 to her niece Elizabeth Garrat. Original Stories was Mary Wollstonecraft's only work written directly for children, in which the wise and rational governess Mrs Mason educates her "shamefully ignorant" charges Mary and Caroline, who "had caught every prejudice that the vulgar casually instil", towards rational right-mindedness through a sequence of original stories. This edition is notably scarce, with OCLC listing just nine copies in institutional holdings.

Edward Donovan
London : Printed for the Author and for F. and C.Rivington, 1792 A good to very good complete set of 16 volumes in 8, with 576 plates of which 568 are hand coloured. In contemporary half morocco leather over what are likely to be the publisher's plain boards. The spines have raised bands, delicate blind-stamped and gilt designs, and gilt titles. The boards have a blind-stamped design to the leather edges. All the bindings are sound and clean, with wear to corners (with leather loss at tips) and edges, and some light marking to the card, particularly where is adjoins the leather. The red leather is slightly darkened on one volume and lighter on two. The contents are largely 1st issue, with a question over Vols I, X and XIII. Donovan issued the contents of I-X in parts between 1792 and 1801 and, viewing the work as complete, issued a new title, advert, and contents pages. He added 6 more volumes between 1806 and 1813. In this set, Vol I has the later title and is probably 2nd issue. Vol X has a title page with the right date, but a slight variation in publisher and printer (this variant is not mentioned in Lisney). Vol XIII has the first issue title to Vol XI with the volume number changed by hand. All volumes have the bookplate of Paul Sokoloff (a noted amateur entomologist) to the front endpaper, and some have an additional armorial plate, with the motto 'sapere aude'. The contents are clean and in very good condition with very bright and well coloured plates. The original page markers are present in most volumes. As with all works issued in parts, paper tone and quality … [Click Below for Full Description]

YOUNG (Arthur).
Bury St Edmund's: printed by J. Rackham; for W. Richardson, 1792. Grand in-4. "The best account of the state of France previously to the Revolution" (McCulloch). McCulloch p.214. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel De
London: Printed for F. and C. Rivington, T. Longman, B. Law, G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1792. London: Printed for F. and C. Rivington, T. Longman, B. Law, G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1792. Early example of Cervantes' masterpiece. Octavo, 4 volumes. Bound in full contemporary calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, burgundy spine labels, engraved frontispiece to each volume, illustrated. Translated by T. Smollett. In very good condition, armorial bookplates. A nice example of an early edition of Don Quixote. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself, with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire, Sancho Panza, they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years, it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers, from Dickens to Faulkner, who once said he reread it once a year, "just as some people read the Bible". Vladimir Nabokov is quoted as saying, "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. [He] looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through [his] sheer vitality... He stands for everything that is gentle, forlorn, pure, unselfish, and gallant. The parody has become a paragon."

Philadelphia Area: Manuscripts accounts including the delivery of food and wood for a canal started by the Delaware and Schuylkill Navigation Company. "For the use of the Delaware and Schuykill Canal Company" Contains 16 pages of manuscript. Dates 1792-1793 John Jacobs The Delaware and Schuylkill Navigation Company was incorporated in 1792 to open a canal alongside the Schuylkill River from Philadelphia seventeen miles to Norristown, Pennsylvania. This initiative, led by Robert Morris, was likely the first public canal project in the United States. It was also part of an unrealized plan to bring fresh water from the Schuylkill River to Philadelphia. The first water system in Philadelphia was proposed by the Delaware and Schuylkill Canal Company whose 1792 charter included the right to supply water to the city of Philadelphia. The canal was hand-dug, Work on the canal was suspended when investors in the Delaware and Schuylkill Canal company lost faith in the project and the company's assets plummeted. The company went bankrupt in the mid-1790s, after spending about $220,000. However, occasional work on the canal reportedly occurred as late as 1798. The Delaware and Schuylkill Navigation Company merged in 1811 to form the Union Canal Company for the purpose of building an east-west canal through Pennsylvania. Sampling of names: John Jacobs, James Lindsay, Jacob Pike, Thomas Lincoln, Matthias Pennebaker, Patience Matson, Joseph Ellis, Joseph Stapleton, Joseph Cooke, Thomas Lightfoot, John Heacock, Thomas Paschall, George Scott, William Allen, Edward Thomas, Christopher Rittenh … [Click Below for Full Description]

BASTEROT (Barthélémy de).
Paris, Rainville, Debray, Bailly, 1792. in-8. 1f. 80pp. 1 carte. Cartonnage moderne genre ancien. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Previous owner bookplate on front pastedown. Text is tanned with some light foxing. An important legal reference for the early laws of the state, this collection prints all the British laws in force in North Carolina ten years after the end of the Revolution. Most of the penal and many of the civil laws in the state were based on Parliamentary statute and British custom, and Martin, who produced many contemporary volumes on the laws of North Carolina, goes all the way back to the era of the Magna Carta. Burr, Aaron; John Jay; George Clinton]
Printed by T. and J. Swords, New-York, 1792. 30pp. Disbound, lacks the final blank leaf. Top blank margin of title page torn, but no text affected. Scattered foxing, Good+. Signed in type at the end by Richard Harison, John Cozine, C.I. Bogert, Robert Troup, James H. Hughes, and Thomas Cooper. List of New York State Sheriff appointments at pp.28-30. Good+. This pamphlet concerns a New York election dispute involving George Clinton, John Jay, and Aaron Burr. The contestants in 1792's gubernatorial race were Clinton, the incumbent, and Chief Justice John Jay, the Federalist. Jay got more votes. But the votes of Otsego and two other Counties were disqualified; thus Clinton won a razor-thin victory. New York required that the County Sheriff box the cast votes and deliver them to the Secretary of State. But the term of Otsego County's Sheriff Smith had expired, and a successor had not been appointed. Smith, now County Supervisor, was barred from also holding the office of Sheriff. Clintonians, with much assistance from Senator Aaron Burr, who owed his political elevation to Clinton, declared the Sheriff's office vacant, preventing a count of its votes. Harison and others present their argument here that Smith was legally the sheriff of Otsego, and that the County's votes were therefore valid. Evans 24730. NAIP w021670 [10]. 163 Eberstadt 411.
