SMITH, Adam.
London: for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell in the Strand; and W. Creech, and J. Bell & Co. at Edinburgh, 1792 - 2 volumes, octavo (210 x 130 mm). Rebound in modern speckled half calf, red morocco labels to spines, compartments ruled and decorated in gilt, marbled boards, edges speckled green. Small ownership inscription to title page. Contents lightly browned with some creasing and infrequent spotting, overall an excellent set. Seventh edition, a good set of Adam Smith's first book, the work that established his reputation as a philosopher both in London and on the Continent. "One of Adam Smith's major claims to fame, in some ways his greatest, is his development of a unified concept of an economic system with mutually interdependent parts. His development of this came well before the Wealth of Nations; it is in the Theory of Moral Sentiments of 1759 and the Lectures of 1762-3" (D. P. O'Brien, The Classical Economists, 1975, p. 29). The sixth edition of the Theory, which appeared a few months before Smith's death, evinced a number of broad developments in his later thought, as well as his last views on many specific points. Smith at least in part made extensive revisions so that he might bequeath a refreshment of copyright to his publisher, in which he was successful. This seventh edition, printed in 1000 copies, has some minor changes over the sixth. See the editors' introduction to the Glasgow edition (Oxford, 1976), pp. 15–20; Ross, Life, pp. 381–5, 391–5, and Richard Sher's account of the early editions of Adam Smith's books in Britain and Ireland in Tribe (ed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pigott, Charles]
Dublin: Printed for P. Byrne [et al], 1792. [8],87;[16],24,43-74,67-102;[12],[9]-112pp. Octavo. Three volumes. Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume. Ownership signature ("Sitgreaves") on each title (U.S. Congressman and diplomat Samuel Sitgreaves) cut into in binding, scattered foxing and mild tanning, chip from lower blank gutter corner of title, otherwise very good. The "second" (but first Dublin) edition of the first part, and the first Dublin printings of the second and third. A very popular collection of gossip about, and invective toward, the upper classes, its tone well in line with its author's revolutionary sympathies. The London editions and their many reprintings appeared in 1792 and following. ESTC T125821 & T188741 & T188744.

Sanders, Francis William
J. Jones, Dublin 1792 - Front board detached, evidence the book was in a fire from scorching on the spine and back board (but no aroma) ; some light foxing and toning to text, otherwise decent condition. But with a most interesting provenance - signature in inside board of Robert Nelson and note on ffep "Bought at Chancellor Nelson's by James Semple 1819" According to William and Mary College's website "James Semple, a Judge in the General Court of Virginia from 1809-1834, was appointed professor of law at the College of William & Mary in 1819. Semple had served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1797-1798 and 1801-1809, and would serve again as a member of the legislature from 1822-1823. Semple remained a professor at William & Mary until his death in 1834. " And from a graveyard webiste "Robert Nelson, born at Yorktown, Va., 14th October, 1778; married, April, 1803, Judith Carter, youngest daughter and ninth surviving child of Gov. John Page by his first wife (Frances Burwell). He was called Chancellor Nelson, from having been Chancellor of William and Mary College. He died, 1819, at Williamsburg, James City Co., Va., aged about 40. He was professor of law in William and Mary College, and was also Equity Judge. He was a Presidential Elector in 1813." BUT, according to William and Mary's website, there was no Chancellor between 1799 and 1859! The answer to the mystery was recently supplied by the archivist at William and Mary. "While Robert Nelson was never appointed Chancellor of William and Mary, he was appointed Chancellor of the Williamsburg district of Virginia ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Burlamaqui formulated the principles of popular sovereignty, of delegated power, of a constitution as a fundamental law, of a personal and functional separation of powers into three independent departments.and finally, he provided for an institutional guardian of the fundamental law" (Harvey). Burlamaqui's other great achievement was to put Pufendorf's theories into systematic form. Blackstone was among the many jurists influenced by this work. Marvin stated a general opinion when he observed that "his works are deservedly held in high esteem.": Legal Bibliography (1847) 162. GOLDSMITH (Oliver)
Leipzig in der Wedmanuschen Buchhandlung - 1795, 1792. 3 volumes. 8vo, 200 x 116 mms., pp. [xxvii], 416; [7] 8 - 432; [xvi], 560, contemporary half calf, gilt spine, black leather labels, marbled boards (a bit rubbed); slight wear to binding, but generally a very good set. Goldsmith published his Roman History in 1769, and it proved to be one of his most popular publications and was adapted for use in schools. Tobias Smollett reviewed it in The Critical Review: "This performance is seasonable, and well executed. Though the author n his preface modestly calls it, a compilation rather than a work, yet we hazard nothing in recommending it as an excellent and elegant digest of the Roman History." Thousands of readers agreed with Smollett and the work, or versions of it, were in print for the next sixty years. NCBEL gives 1792 - 1795 as the date of the first German edition, but Weidmann und Reich in Leipzig published a translation in 1774. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
