¶ Bougeart p.366 - Martin & Walter n°22849.

A Voyage to the South Sea, undertaken by Command of His Majesty, for the purpose of conveying the Bread-fruit Tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship the Bounty... including an account of the mutiny on board the said ship, and the subsequent voyage of part of the Crew, in the Ship's Boat, from Tofoa, one of the Friendly Islands, to Timor, a Dutch settlement in the East Indies.

London: George Nicol, 1792. Quarto, with frontispiece portrait, and six plans and charts; fine uncut copy in recent half spotted calf with black and crimson morocco spine labels. First edition. This is a handsome and notably large copy of this classic, one of the great voyage accounts of all time: the official narrative by William Bligh of the voyage of the Bounty. This is the full account of the voyage, and includes a slightly altered version of Bligh's description of the mutiny and the open-boat voyage which had been rushed into print separately two years earlier. At the time of this publication Bligh was on his second breadfruit voyage, and the work was edited by James Burney with the assistance of Sir Joseph Banks. The open-boat voyage, one of the most famous feats of seamanship of all time, was also notable for the coastal discoveries made almost accidentally in the course of the desperate voyage. Bligh's description here is accompanied by his important engraved chart of discoveries made on the coast of present-day Queensland. His achievement in charting large sections of the coast under conditions of terrible hardship partly completed the work of Cook himself on the Australian east coast. Occasional light foxing, likewise affecting the frontispiece (as often).

A Particular Account of The Insurrection of The Negroes of St. Domingo, Begun in August 1791. Speech made to the National Assembly, the third of November, 1791, by the Deputies from The General Assembly of The French Part of St. Domingo. Translated from the French.

1792. Fourth Edition, with notes and appendix extracted from authentic original papers. Disbound, untrimmed with wide margins, very good indeed. An astonishing and fascinating account of the 1791 Maroon slave uprising in Haiti (the only slave uprising ever to have resulted in the subsequent formation of a nation state) which resulted in the abolition of slavery in France in 1794 (until its resurrection under Napoleon) and the rise of the Haitian leader Toussaint Louverture. A fascinating survival, very scarce.

This map was originally published to accompany Hunter's great early settlement account titled An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island (1793).         Della Specola Astronomica de' Regi Studi di Palermo Libri Quattro.

First edition Palermo: Reale Stamperia, 1792. A fine copy, uncut in the original boards, of Piazzi's account of the Palermo Observatory, which he established, and where he made the observations that led to his discovery, on January 1, 1801, of the minor planet Ceres. Specola Astronomica includes Piazzi's description of the astronomical instruments he had commissioned and assembled for the Palermo Observatory, the most famous of which was Jesse Ramsden's vertical circle, illustrated on the plates in this volume. A "large theodolite-type instrument was the 5-foot vertical circle which Ramsden made for Piazzi's new observatory at Palermo. Both Ramsden and Piazzi worked at this instrument, twice abandoned before its completion in August, 1789. The horizontal circle gave readings in azimuth read by a micrometer microscope, and the vertical, readings in altitude by two diametrically opposed microscopes. The divisions on the circles were illuminated by an inclined silver mirror fixed to each microscope, and the wires in the telescope eyepiece by transmitting light from a small instrument through the hollow tube-axis - two Ramsden innovations. This instrument, the finest complete circle hitherto made, formed the basis of Piazzi's astronomical work. With it he catalogued nearly 8000 stars, compiled a valuable table of refractions, and attempted to measure the parallax of several bright stars. The great labour involved in the catalogue is the more remarkable when we consider that each star was observed several times before its position was decided" (King, History of the Telescope, pp. 166-8, with the circle illustrated). Summoned in 1780 by the viceroy of Sicily to fill the chair of higher mathematics at the Academy of Palermo, Piazzi was encouraged to establish an astronomical observatory, "and toward the end of the 1780s Piazzi went to England in order to obtain the best possible equipment. "In England, Piazzi met Maskelyne, William Herschel, and Ramsden... The most important result of Piazzi's English visit... was the great five-foot vertical circle, a masterpiece of eighteenth-century technology, that he commissioned from Ramsden. It was installed in the observatory in the Santa Ninfa tower of the royal palace of Palermo in 1789, and is still preserved there. The Palermo observatory opened in 1790, and Piazzi was appointed its director, a post that he retained for most of the rest of his life. "Having returned to Palermo, Piazzi took up the problem of the precise determination of the astronomical coordinates (direct ascension and declination) of the principal stars. Palermo was then the southernmost European observatory, and the favourable climatic conditions that it provided allowed him to study more stars than had been previously catalogued, with a greater degree of accuracy" (DSB). Piazzi published two additional parts of this work, but without plates, in 1794 and 1806. Lalande, p. 622 ("Ce grand et précieux ouvrage"). Folio (370 x 255 mm), pp. xxxii, 240 and 4 folding engraved plates (the first plate showing Ramsden's vertical circle measures 650 x 470 mm). Uncut and completely untouched in the original carta rustica, a very fine, fresh, and crisp copy. Rare.

Fine Second Edition of this paean to the progress of the new American nation by the Father of American Geography, containing "much curious reading which will never become obsolete." (J. R. Smith, Bibliotheca Americana, 1619) Dissatisfied with the treatment of America in British geographies, Morse, clergyman, geographer, and father of inventor Samuel Morse, wrote this first textbook on American geography. In addition to expounding authoritatively on geography, he rebutted certain racist views published in the Encyclopædia Britannica concerning Native American peoples (for instance, that their women were "slavish" and that their skins and skulls were thicker than those of other humans).         'Hints Respecting Botany Bay' [in] Miscellanies in Prose and Verse...

Edinburgh: J. Robertson, 1792. Octavo, 336 pp.; a very good copy in nineteenth-century half calf over marbled boards. Rare, with an early essay on Botany Bay by a Scottish judge and therefore providing some insight into the reaction of the legal profession to the realities of transportation: 'the Botany-bay scheme is the most absurd, prodigal and impracticable vision that ever intoxicated the mind of man.'Lord Gardenstone (1721-1793) was a distinguished judge, bon vivant and a wonderful eccentric noted for his fondness for pigs: he was 'distinguished for his conviviality, at a period when, especially in Scotland, it must be admitted that real proficiency was requisite to procure fame in that qualification' (Robert Chambers, A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, 1835). He also found time to be an occasional writer, and this is a charming selection of some of his pensées and poems, which unsurprisingly includes a rollicking ode 'On Hard Drinking.'In his 'Hints on Botany Bay', Lord Gardenstone takes as his starting point the contemporary reports that some 2029 convicts had been transported prior to 18 March 1791, at a cost of £374,000 beside some unrecorded "contingencies". He was astounded by the excessively high cost of hundreds of pounds per convict, especially when there was no hint that the costs would abate; Gardenstone recommended instead the adoption of the Panopticon as devised by the great penal theorist Jeremy Bentham. To those who would argue that the colony would become quickly self-sufficient, he noted that such dreams of agriculture in Sydney were unconvincing when one realised that Governor Phillip's exploring party took five days 'to penetrate thirty miles into the desart' - evidence, by the way, that he had read Phillip's account. This is the second edition, although copies of the first edition appear to be very thin on the ground indeed (no copy of any first edition is recorded by the English Short Title Catalogue, suggesting that the "first" edition may well be a publisher's puff). Ferguson recorded copies of this second edition in the Mitchell Library and the National Library of Australia. Binding rubbed.

Recent quarter calf, smooth spine in five compartments (two with central gilt tools) divided by double rules, red morocco lettering piece gilt, marbled paper-covered boards plain end papers renewed. Near Fine Third Edition (first published 1772). "[F]irst of a series of five works with similar titles, creating a new class of travel which exposed the author to the satire of Combe's 'Dr. Syntax.' The illustrations to all these books are in aquatint, over which is washed with the brush a tint of warm yellow or brown to give tone to the picture. . . " (Hardie). In June of 1770, Gilpin embarked on his first truly picturesque tour. "Sailing down the Wye proved a very different trip from [Gilpin's earlier] tame journey down the Thames: the ruined castles and mountains of Wales were indeed exciting after the flat countryside of eastern and south-eastern England. . . . here was landscape that called for description, that matched his [Gilpin's] conceptions of beauty and grandeur."         Lettres persanes].

Shnor Sankt Peterburg 1792 - Small octavo, two parts in one vol. (19 x 11.5 cm). Title with portrait of Montesquieu engraved by I.K. Nabholz, 563 pp.; some small marginal repairs, small loss of text (1-2 letters) partly restored in contemporary writing on pp. 131-132, 134, 511-514 corners of pp. 497-498 and 563-564 torn off not affecting text, occasional contemporary inscriptions, one in different hand from 1935 to upper fly leaf. Contemporary calf, black and red morocco label to spine lettered in blind; rubbed, block shaken but holding. A masterpiece of the French XVIII century literature in an early Russian translation. Completed in 1721, this important piece of French literature recounts in 161 letters the experiences of two Persian noblemen, Usbek and Rica, who are travelling through France. Having left his seraglio in Isfahan in 1711, Usbek takes on a long journey, accompanied by his young friend Rica. During the trip and their stay in Paris during 1712–1720, they comment, in letters exchanged with friends and mullahs, on numerous aspects of Western, Christian society, particularly French politics and Moors, ending with a biting satire of the system of John Law. A clever way to criticise the Ancien Régime without seeming to. The Lettres persanes was an immediate success and often imitated. In Russia the text widely circulated among upper classes, but it was available only in original French or other Western European languages, until the first Russian translation by Fiodor Pospelov was published in 1789 (without any illustration). It was followed closely by the present edition with the text newly translated by the retired collegiate councillor Efim Roznotovskiy (1737-92). Very rare. WorldCat locates two copies only - in Harvard and Cambridge University library. Sopikov 6303; Rodossky 632; Svodnyi Katalog XVIII 4334.

– Kirchner 688; Goed. IV 1, 1089, 20 c (Cramer); Fromm 22725. Nicht bei Diesch.

Synopsis and Nosology, Being an Arrangement and Definition of Diseases

Hartford, CT: Printed by Nathaniel Patten 1792 - First English language edition, variant state with three-line imprint. Contemporary full speckled tan sheep, with five bands stamped to the spine in gilt, a contrasting red title label, lettered in gilt, board edges decorated in gilt, printed on laid paper. Very good, sturdy spine but with cords visible inside the covers, rubbing to the edges and spine compartments, spine head with small burn mark, some light toning and scattered marginalia to the pages, a hint of spotting to the fore edge and a few pages, otherwise clean interior. Overall, an attractive copy of this early American imprint of an important medical work. First published in Latin in 1783, Synopsis and Nosology is a "history or description of diseases, arranged in systematic order" by esteemed Scottish physician and professor William Cullen. Specifically, this text outlines Cullen's influential classification of diseases, which he based on observable symptoms of disease that are useful for purposes of diagnosis. Notably, Cullen arranged diseases into four major divisions: pyrexiae (febrile diseases), neuroses (nervous diseases), cachexiae (diseases related to poor bodily habits), and locales (local diseases).         Elogio funebre del ilustrisimo señor Doct. D. Gregorio Francisco de Campos.

Lima: En la Imprenta de la Casa de los Niños Expósitos, 1792. 4to (20 cm; 8"). [39] ff., 60 pp., [2] ff. The bare facts of this publication are these: Gregorio Francisco de Campos served as bishop of La Paz from 1764 until his death at Christmas season 1789. Clearly the men were close and events of 1781 brought them even closer: => That was the year of the Tupac Katari rebellion and the nearly year-long siege of La Paz by the 40,000-strong indigenous independence activists who rebelled against the Spanish Empire. And yes, mention is made in this volume of the rebellion.    Into his bibliographical entry for this eulogy Medina copied an interesting document, a letter from the viceroy to the king concerning Erazu. => This was printed with several handsome historiated initials and one attractive headpiece.         Medina, Lima, 1754; Sabin 22717. 20th-century Latin American brown calf, letters on spine in sans serif (!!) and some staining to edges; a rear blank (retained from previous binding) is of 19th-century wastepaper with fragmentary manuscript accountings. Old neatly inked numeral to title-page; interior clean and bright, red ribbon placemarker.
