V cracked but firmly holding, light chipping to spine ends, lower corners little scuffed). Internally little browned only, occasional minor spotting, a few marginal paper flaws, a few short closed tears. Provenance: Inscribed by the author on half-title of first volume "données à Monsieur du Déschaux par son ami De Saint-Pierre à Paris ce 22 juillet 1792 rue de la Reine Blanche"*; Octave Borelli, Marseille (armorial bookplate to front pasterdowns). A fine, unmarked and wide-margined set. ----RARE DEDICATION COPY, inscribed and signed by the author, of the corrected and enlarged 4th edition of volumes 1 to 4, and first edition of volume 5, of the Etude de la Nature. Despite the rather 'scientific' title, this work is less an exact description of the nature than an apologia of philosophical optimism. De Saint-Pierre (1737-1814) is best known for his 1787 novel Paul et Virginie. He was elected to the Institut de France in 1795, and in 1803 to the Academie Francaise. The friendship with Jean-Jacques Rousseau did much to mold the views expressed in his Etudes de la nature. To the third edition 1788, he appended Paul et Virginie. De Saint-Pierre was one of the first to celebrate cultural primitivism, which became one of the central ideas of the Romantic movement. *In fact, it was house no. 16 of Rue de la Reine Blanche where Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre lived when he wrote his famous novel Paul et Virginie in 1786 and La Chaumière indienne in 1790. It was still his home at the time he was appointed intendant of the Jardin des Plantes de Paris from 1792 to 1793. Very Good.

The Winning of the West. Daniel Boone Edition with Roosevelt manuscript. Four volume set.

Four volume set; 5 folding maps, 102 plates. Here, #2 of only 200 sets in the original grained green morocco which has reverted to brown at the spines; floral gilt corner devices, raised bands, gilt titled spine. Top edge gilt; others deckled. Ruled & floriated dentelles; remarkably preserved red suede end & fly sheets. One page folded legal leaf in Roosevelt's hand mounted following colophon reveals his editing wasn't reflective but done as he wrote (lined through words here bracketed): "The attitude of the British gradually changed from one of passive to active hostility. In 1792 and '93 they still (united) [to keep] the Indians to make [at] peace with the Americans, provided always there were no such concessions made to the latter as would endanger the British control of the fur trade. But by the beginning of 1794 the relations between the Great Britain and the United States had become so strained that open war was threatened; for the advisors of the king, relying on the weakness of the young Federal Republic had begun to adopt towards it that tone of brutal insolence, which [backed by] reflected well the general attitude of the British people toward all Americans, and which finally brought on the second war between the two nations. The British officials in Canada were quick to reflect the tone of the home government, and, as always in such cases, [some of them] the more zealous and belligerent went a little farther than they were authorized. On February 10th Lord Dorchester, Governor of Canada, in an address of welcome to some of the chiefs from the tribes of the north and west, said speaking of the boundary, [speaking of children, since my return, I find no appearance of a line] "Children since my return I find no appearance of a line remains; and the manner in which the people of the United States push on and act and talk [on this]?.I shall not be xxx surprised if we are at war with them in the course of the present year; and if so a line must then be drawn by the warriors?.we have acted in the most peaceable manner and borne the language and conduct of the people if the United States with patience; but I believe our patience is almost exhausted." (1) [At the Nor that] Of course such a speech, delivered to such an audience, was [merely incitement to war a direct] more than a mere incitement to war; it was a direct appeal to arms. [P] Nor did the [incitement] encouragement given the Indians end with words; for [Simcoe] in April, Simcoe, [who was in command in upper Canada, went to] the lieutenant-governor, himself built a fort at the Miami rapids, in the very heart of the hostile?. (1). Rives' Life and Times of James Madison, III, 418. A verified copy of the speech, from the archives of the London Foreign Office. The authenticity of the speech was admitted at the time by the British minister; yet, extraordinary to say, not only British, but American historians, had spoken of it as spurious." An exceptional set in publisher's original bindings; free of previous owner's name or other markings. Large, stout octavo

THE RUINS: OR, A SURVEY OF THE REVOLUTIONS OF EMPIRES ... Translated from the French ..

London: Printed for J. Johnson, St. Paul's Church-yard, 1792.. Octavo, pp. [i] [ii: blank] [iii] [iv: blank] [v] vi-viii [ix] x [xi] xii-xv [xvi: blank] [1] 2-400, inserted frontispiece, two inserted folded maps (one of the Eurasian side of globe, other of celestial constellations), rebound in modern faux-lizard, spine panel stamped in gold, new endpapers. First edition in English. The main text ends with the phrase, "End of the First Part," but no further parts were written, or at least published. The author includes almost seventy pages of notes, plus an index. Celebrated political treatise in fictional form first published in French 1791, shortly after the French Revolution, although conceived before it. "The narrator's spirit is taken by a genius to a point in space above the Earth and, as the planet rotates, is able to witness the future development of civilization. An early use of the earth satellite notion, as well as that of time travel." - Locke, Voyages in Space 204. Volney was a French scholar and politician who, though born to the nobility, survived the Revolution, and though opposed to Napoleon's empire, survived his reign as well, and, during a visit to America, survived an absurd accusation of spying for an imminent French invasion of Louisiana. He spent four years in the Middle East, producing an account of his travels in 1787. The present work was his most influential, and is very much in the mode of Enlightenment thought: republican and universalist, trying to combine utopian longings and political moderation, chastened by an awareness of the transience of empires. In several of Shelley's poems can be heard echoes of the melancholy grandeur of Volney's vision. On his visit to America, Volney met with Thomas Jefferson, who wanted to bring out a new translation of the work, working anonymously in order to avoid accusations of endorsing Volney's (anti-Christian) prediction that all religions would eventually unite. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 220 and Voyages in Space V667. Negley, Utopian Literature 1144 and 1145 (citing, respectively, the French first edition of 1791 and an English edition of 1795). Top portion of text block water-stained, mostly along fore-edge, but extending into the text on about fifty pages; some foxing to inserted frontispiece (with some offset to title page) and the two maps, first and least few leaves, some scattered foxing, mostly early and late, a good copy overall of this important book. A scarce edition. (#147602)

An uncommon map, published in the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. L. Piloni, "Carte geografiche della Sardegna", p. 194, tav. LXXX Dimensioni

A NARRATIVE OF THE EXTRAORDINARY SUFFERINGS OF MR. ROBERT FORBES, HIS WIFE AND FIVE CHILDREN. DURING AN UNFORTUNATE JOURNEY THROUGH THE WILDERNESS, FROM CANADA TO KENNEBECK RIVER, IN THE YEAR 1784

Portland Printed, Reprinted at Exeter: Henry Ranlet, 1792. 23,[1]pp. Half title. Contemporary paper wrappers, restitched. Expert restoration with facsimile to half title and terminal leaf. Very good. In a red morocco box. Robert Forbes, an American residing with his family in Canada on the Chaudiere River, departed overland in mid- March 1784 with three Dutch guides, intending to relocate his family to a settlement on the Kennebec. Ten days into the journey, Forbes, his wife and five children were tricked, robbed and abandoned by their guides. Struggling on alone, they were assisted by a local Native American, who supplied them with moose meat and directions. But by April 12th, with supplies dwindling and terrain too difficult for his wife and all but his oldest child, Forbes made camp and left his wife to seek help. Travelling by raft and foot and surviving on a couple of ounces of moose meat and their leather shoes, Forbes and his eldest son were found by hunters on April 22. A rescue party for his wife and children was immediately raised, but the camp could not be reached until June 2, fifty days since being left at camp with little to no supplies. Emaciated and weak, remarkably, Forbes's wife and one child survived. Forbes' tale evidently struck a chord with the locals, and his narrative was set to paper by Arthur Bradman. The work was first published in Portland in 1791, followed by the present Exeter printing the following year. Editions in Windsor (1792), Norwich (1793), Worcester (1793) and Philadelphia (1794) followed. All editions prior to the Philadelphia edition are very rare; only three institutional examples of this Exeter printing located in OCLC. BRISTOL B7942. SHIPTON & MOONEY 46397.

A 3 page journal of a journey through the Lumber Heritage Region of Pennsylvania on horse from Lycoming Creek in Williamsport, PA to the border of the New York state line and back to Lycoming Creek for 44 days from July 29, 1792 to Sept. 14, 1792.

Pennsylvania, 1792. 13 x 8. "Manuscript, unsigned, 3 pages conjoined, 13"" x 8"", dated July 29 - September 14, 1792, depicts a journey through Lycoming, Pennsylvania region. Document shows heavy folds with some tearing and chipping along folds, overall very good condition. A full translation with heavy notations original spelling of the writer and adding additional research. Broken down by the day's travel, it is headed ""Memorandum / viz"" beginning on July 29th, 1792, with an entry for each day, no point of origin. In part the journal entry reads, ""July 29, I set from Mr. Winters near the mouth of Lycoming Creek [near Williamsport, PA] on my way to Tyoga [near Trout Run PA]. Up said creek to Kyles about 15 miles where I got some necessaries. 30th - Left Kyles with an intention to go to Tyoga N.N.E. Course about five or six miles came to the place where the late storm fell the timber so as to be most impossible to travel with a horse. I attempted to go through till night. Struck fire and lain in amongst the timber . . . August 3 - Travers'd the same and examined the Soil Timber, Etc. for the Course of the 4th 5th 6. the land has many small streams running into Lycoming & the head of the first & second forks of Pine Creek. The timber in this land I suppose of 15,000 acres chiefly of Beech, Sugar, Trees, Maypole, Black Oak, Spruce and some White Pine."" It is believe this area is Buttonwood, Liberty, English Center, PA. ""14th . . . I fell in with about 9,000 or 10,000 acres of execellent land . . . 20 - Rain'd built a hut and kept close all day. 21st- Examin'd the said land and suppose there to be about 12,000 acres. The land is superior to the rest that I have seen. The timber chiefly is of black and white walnut , white and black ash and black and white oak . . . 28th - I took the Course from Cononsaw Creek nearly N.E. Course to the York Line . . . 31st -Up to the river to the head of each branch where there is very large body of land. Rich soil & well timbered found by examining that Mr. Brodhead had suveyed on Eastermost branch to the Head but had not surveyed on the West Branch . . September 1st - took a N.E. Course till I came near the York (New York) line to Mr. Strawbridges, where seed Mr. Adlum's party . . . 7th Went out to where Mr. Chapman was. Delivered him the warrants & 175 and returned Tyoga Point . . . The journal makes mention of various parts of PA including Cedar Run, Harrison St. Park, Ansonia, Watrous, the Allegheny River, Ellisburg, Genesee, Ramsey, Raymond, Tunkhannock, Rome, Athens, Camptown and more. Moravian missionaries began trickling into the Lumber Heritage Region as early as the 1740s setting up missions along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River and subsequently following the upper Allegheny River. The arrival of the Europeans immediately changed the landscape and fostered conflicts with Native Americans. However, following the Native American land cessions of 1754 and 1768, dispersed European family farms quickly surfaced mostly within the West Branch valley. The new European arrivals sustained themselves agriculturally, clearing land for family farms on the southeastern fringes of the LHR. Soon, a handful of industrial operations began to emerge, evidenced by a Williamsport sawmill dated to 1773. For these earliest farmers, the massive trees around them were a hindrance, an obstacle to be cleared and burned. These initial operations signaled the beginning of an industry soon to define the history and culture of the Lumber Heritage Region. The Land Sales Act of 1792 dramatically decreased the price of land and opened over 4,000,000 acres for purchase. These early mills fulfilled local needs for building materials, but lumbermen soon uncovered a niche downstream where additional settlers peppered the landscape. As a result, crudely built lumber rafts conveyed the first lumber on its adventuresome ride down the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh. All types of lumber, including dimension and square timber, journeyed down the West Branch and Allegheny during this Pioneer Era. Rafting became pivotal in the development of the early lumber industry, with early LHR rafting streams deemed public highways by state legislation in 1798. Small-scale mills and rafting marked the beginning of an economic base for the LHR, planting the seeds for a burgeoning industry."

A Correct Survey of Dublin as it Stood in the Year 1610

London: James Malton, 1792. unbound. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 14" x 20" This scarce and beautiful city plan of Dublin was published by James Malton in 1792. Essentially an enlarged copy of John Speed's first map of Dublin, this map depicts the city as it stood in 1610. Several important buildings, streets, fortifications, rivers and other interesting details are noted throughout. The names here are distributed over the map instead of in a reference table like the Speed Map. A plan of the Castle and three seals of Dublin are included. By 1610 the nine year's war had ended and the first Dutch had begun arriving in Manhattan. This map was published by Malton in his "A Picturesque and Descriptive View of the City of Dublin Described". The map is in good condition with minor foxing and some toning. Original plate mark is visible. James Malton (1761-1803) was an Irish engraver and artist. He briefly worked as a draughtsman with architect James Gandon and later went on to produce his best known work, "A Picturesque and Descriptive View of the City of Dublin Described

McCutchen on front paste-downs. Minimal rubbing to joints of volume one, otherwise a near fine set.Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), often referred to as Dr. Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson. Born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, Johnson attended Pembroke College, Oxford for just over a year, before his lack of funds forced him to leave. After working as a teacher he moved to London, where he began to write for The Gentleman's Magazine. His early works include the biography Life of Mr Richard Savage, the poems London and The Vanity of Human Wishes, and the play Irene. After nine years of work, Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1755. It had a far-reaching effect on Modern English and has been described as "one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship". This work brought Johnson popularity and success. Until the completion of the Oxford English Dictionary 150 years later, Johnson's was viewed as the pre-eminent British dictionary. His later works included essays, an influential annotated edition of The Plays of William Shakespeare, and the widely read tale The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia. In 1763, he befriended James Boswell, with whom he later traveled to Scotland; Johnson described their travels in A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Towards the end of his life, he produced the massive and influential Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, a collection of biographies and evaluations of seventeenth and eighteenth-century poets. Johnson was a tall and robust man. His odd gestures and tics were disconcerting to some on first meeting him. Boswell's Life, along with other biographies, documented Johnson's behavior and mannerisms in such detail that they have informed the posthumous diagnosis of Tourette syndrome, a condition not defined or diagnosed in the eighteenth century. After a series of illnesses, he died on the evening of 13 December 1784, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. In the years following his death, Johnson began to be recognized as having had a lasting effect on literary criticism, and he was claimed by some to be the only truly great critic of English literature.Courtney & Smith. A Bibliography of Samuel Johnson, pp. 163-164.Edward J. McCutchen (1857-1933) was a Californian attorney and renowned book collector.
