(11). 1-306 (correctly 310, (12), 1-252 pp. Contemporary brown mottled calf, somewhat worn, gilt spines, Signature on first endpaper. 2 volumes. José de Acosta (1539 or 1540-1600), sixteenth-century Spanish Jesuit missionary and naturalist in Latin America. It is chiefly the Historia natural y moral, first published in 1590, that has established the reputation of Acosta, as this was one of the very first detailed and realistic descriptions of the New World. In a form more concise than that employed by his predecessors, Francisco Lopez de Gómara and Oviedo, he treated the natural and philosophic history of the New World from a broader point of view. In it, more than a century before other Europeans learned of the Bering Strait, Acosta hypothesized that Latin America's indigenous peoples had migrated from Asia. He also divided them into three barbarian categories. The Historia also described Inca and Aztec customs and history, as well as other information such as winds and tides, lakes, rivers, plants, animals, and mineral resources in the New World.  [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London: printed for John Stockdale, Piccadilly, MDCCXCII. [1792]. Second Edition. Half-Calf. Fine. Thick 8vo: xvi,536pp, with two large folding maps (States of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, Comprehending the Spanish Provinces of East and West Florida . . . by Joseph Purcell; and Northern and Middle States, comprehending the Western Territory and the British Dominions in North America from the best Authorities )and Evans's [folding] polymetric table of America, corrected and improved, shewing the distances between principal towns. Early Essay of the two fold-out maps. Maps fine condition, . Contemporary half-calf, flat spine in six compartments divided by gilt rules, marbled paper-covered boards, red morocco lettering piece gilt, edges speckled brown, plain period end papers. An altogether superior example, tightly bound, text pristine, the splendid maps on heavy stock correctly folded and free of tears and stains. Howes M840; Siebert sale, lot 203. Sabin 50924. Second Edition of this paean to the progress of the new American nation by the Father of American Geography, containing "much curious reading which will never become obsolete." (J. R. Smith, Bibliotheca Americana, 1619) Dissatisfied with the treatment of America in British geographies, Morse, clergyman, geographer, and father of inventor Samuel Morse, wrote this first textbook on American geography. In addition to expounding authoritatively on geography, he rebutted certain racist views published in the Encyclopædia Britannica concerning Native American peoples (for instance, that their women were "slavish" and that their skins and skulls were thicker than those of other humans). . .

Paris: Veuve Hérissant, 1792. Half Calf. Very Good. Exceptionally richly hand-colored French atlas. Elephantine folio, 56 by 44 cm. Following title page (which contains table of contents as well), six two paged hand-colored maps. The first map, with its large allegorical cartouche, is especially spectacular, but all the maps are beautiful and noteworthy for the quality of their coloring. Scarce, with copies held by BNF, Bibliotheque Sainte-Genevieve, Leiden, and the National Library of Scotland, according to OCLC, and not clear whether all of these copies are hand-colored. Corner dampstains, most pronounced on title, then receding as progress. While unquestionably noticeable on the first map, in our view it doesn't seriously detract from the beauty of the map. Other light scattered soiling, which again, we do not find disconcerting. Some scuffing of the binding. While half calf technically, the calf coverage of the boards is minimal

FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR - The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this interesting map of of the Cairbbean and south tip of Florida. Florida is shown as an archipelago. Published in: Nuovo atlante geografico universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni. Roma, Calcografia camerale, 1792-1801. Cassini was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, some foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Dimensioni 497 365mm

Striking copy, with possibly contemporary outline color, of a rare Spanish-made and separately published map of Panama; the source, as indicated in the map itself, was a manuscript â€"unkown- and that published by Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa in their Relacion... de la America Meridional, by Juan de la Cruz. In all, the map is drawn after the foremost cartographic authorities of Spain. The chart focuses on the Pearl Islands and Gulf of Chiriqui, in the West Coast of Panama in the Pacific Ocean. Tomas Lopez (1731 - 1802) was one of the foremost Spanish mapmakers and publishers of the 18th century; he studied under Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville in Paris, until returning to Madrid in 1760, when became Royal Geographer to King Charles III. His position gained him access to otherwise inaccessible sources of information, manuscript charts, recent geographical discoveries, and engineering labors altering the geographical reality of a region, guaranteeing his maps as the most up-to-date published in Spain.

Amsterdam, 1792. 8vo. With a large folding engraved sea chart (57.5 x 68.5 cm). Publisher's original flexible boards covered with blue paper.

KVK (5 copies); Sloos, Warfare 15317; STCN (4 copies); for the author: Biogr. woordenb. Gelderland V, pp. 70-72. Rare first Dutch edition of a detailed account of the Greek islands (the first edition to include the sea chart), by the great Dutch-German Admiral and naval strategist Kinsbergen, known as the Hero of the Black Sea for his successes in battles against the Turks in the 1770s. He gives a detailed description of the region, island by island, with the emphasis on navigation along the coasts, but also with information on fortifications. The book is explicitly directed to military men, seamen and merchants active in the area, and expresses the hope that political changes may in the future lift these islands out of their present state. The map of Greece and the surrounding seas is in Mercator projection at a scale of about 1:1,400,000, with rhumb lines, parallels and meridians, and reticulated scales of latitude in the left and right border. Some spotting on boards. Otherwise a fine copy, virtually untrimmed and in the original publisher's binding.

Braunschweig, Friedrich Vieweg, 1799. 8vo. With 3 folded engraved plates. Modern half leather.

Darmstaedter, p. 272; Löwenberg 57; Sotheran, Second Suppl. 14123 (rare); not in Hoover. Very rare collection of studies of air and gasses in mineshafts, including Humboldt's invention of safety lamps and a rescue apparatus for miners threatened with asphyxiation. Both devices had been tested by Humboldt himself in dangerous experiments. The author was employed by the Prussian mining service in 1792 and soon became manager of a mine. In the present work he investigates the air condition of mines under different circumstances, writes on subterranean meteorology, and deals with the technological side of mining matters (DSB VI, p. 549). Some foxing; a few pages with marginal restoration; a good copy of this interesting work on mining.

        The Theory of Moral Sentiments

London: for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell in the Strand; and W. Creech, and J. Bell & Co. at Edinburgh,, 1792. or, An Essay Towards an Analysis of the Principles by which Men Naturally Judge Concerning the Conduct and Character, first of their Neighbours, and afterwards of themselves. To Which is Added, A Dissertation on the Origin of Languages. The Seventh Edition. In two Volumes. 2 volumes, octavo (210 x 130 mm). Rebound in modern speckled half calf, red morocco labels to spines, compartments ruled and decorated in gilt, marbled boards, edges speckled green. Small ownership inscription to title page. Contents lightly browned with some creasing and infrequent spotting, overall an excellent set. Seventh edition, a good set of Adam Smith's first book, the work that established his reputation as a philosopher both in London and on the Continent. "One of Adam Smith's major claims to fame, in some ways his greatest, is his development of a unified concept of an economic system with mutually interdependent parts. His development of this came well before the Wealth of Nations; it is in the Theory of Moral Sentiments of 1759 and the Lectures of 1762-3" (D. P. O'Brien, The Classical Economists, 1975, p. 29). The sixth edition of the Theory, which appeared a few months before Smith's death, evinced a number of broad developments in his later thought, as well as his last views on many specific points. Smith at least in part made extensive revisions so that he might bequeath a refreshment of copyright to his publisher, in which he was successful. This seventh edition, printed in 1000 copies, has some minor changes over the sixth. See the editors' introduction to the Glasgow edition (Oxford, 1976), pp. 15–20; Ross, Life, pp. 381–5, 391–5, and Richard Sher's account of the early editions of Adam Smith's books in Britain and Ireland in Tribe (ed.), A critical Bibliography of Adam Smith.

Heptameron français Les nouvelles de Marguerite Reine de Navarre

Berne: Chez la Nouvelle Société Typographique, 1792. Fine. Page titles engraved caligraphiques characters, what sets this edition of the first draft by 1783. The illustration, fine and detailed, is very beautiful and "engraved with remarkable finesse" (Cohen).

Miscellaneous Articles. A Letter Addressed to the Abbe Raynal, on the Affairs of North America... Letter Addressed to the Addressers on the Late Proclamation

London: [first two works] Printed for J. Ridgway; [third work] Printed for H.D. Symonds... and Thomas Clio Rickman, 1792. Three works bound in one, "Miscellaneous Articles" first edition, 33, (3 advertisement), 36, 40 pp. Some light browning and minor tears, one corner torn away without loss. 20th century boards. "Miscellaneous Articles" collects 8 pieces; letters to the Marquis of Lansdowne, the Authors of the Republican, Abbé Syeyes, Lord Onslow the people of France and two to Henry Dundas as well as his "Thoughts on the Peace". "A Letter to Abbé Raynal" first appeared in 1782 and remains one of Paine's most important works, disputing an earlier account of the American revolution, and indeed the definition of "revolution" itself. The "Letter to the Addressers..." concerns the government's warning against "wicked and seditious libels" in May 1792, directed chiefly at the second part of "The Rights of Man" and follows on from his letters to Dundas and Onslow. This response was at the printers even as he fled the country in September of the same year. Gimbel pp83, 72, 74. Sabin 58222 notes similar editions of "Abbé Raynal"

        6 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Zus. 17 S., 8. Paris, 1845. 8 S.). -

The Theory of Moral Sentiments or, An Essay Towards an Analysis of the Principles by which Men Naturally Judge Concerning the Conduct and Character, first of their Neighbours, and afterwards of themselves. To Which is Added, A Dissertation on the Origin of Languages. The Seventh Edition. In two Volumes.

London: for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell in the Strand; and W. Creech, and J. Bell & Co. at Edinburgh, 1792 - 2 volumes, octavo (210 x 130 mm). Alston III, 828; Goldsmiths' 15514; Kress B.2411; Jessop, p. 170; Tribe 44; Vanderblue, p. 38.
